Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

What are peoples views on having more than One team?
Many here seem to have several. One serious team and another for trying out fun stuff like 5 at the back, or a no player over 10M team

    Any harm in it?

I have 2 now reluctantly. But, they're the exact same team. The reasoning behind it is to put a link up on here without privacy concerns. Now at least people can see my progress with the infamous Ownership Tactic.

Possibly an unneeded distraction from the main competitive team, and the possible desire to ensure both have completely different players.

      I don't think so.

Having multiple teams just for the sake of it is a bit meh but I have no problem at all with novelty teams if they want to do that and pitch it against each other. I suppose it can be done in the draft game now though instead can't it?

In fact that may be a good idea....would it work?

I just have the one btw...

I can only stop people having 2 teams in my mini league. If they want another one outside of it I don't really care. If you're hedging your bets between two teams it's a bit of a cop-out but I think in the long run you just end up weakening both.

Because he get's his head or foot onto the ball doesn't mean it was a good chance. I remember Utd putting a lot of hopeful balls into the box and Ibra got a touch on it under pressure. That counts as a missed shot. Stats can be misleading.

Not sure on Ramsey. Looks good for Wales because they often have less on the ball and his job is to run around a lot. Not the same for Arsenal. He is also living off one good season when he went on a hot streak. Has shown nothing for many years since.

      1. Piggs Boson

Btw I favour Riedewald because he can play DMC and LB too, and is capable of passing and contributing to attacks. De Boer seems to favour total football, where all players contribute to attacking play, and all players help defend. This suits Riedewald.

        Hopefully he's 4.5m.

Maybe we're all overthinking the Lindelof situation. Mourinho has spent £35m on a new defender because Jones & Smalling clearly aren't up to it despite the number of chances they've been given.

By all accounts he did have a very poor game the other night, but from memory, Mourinho prefers to have a settled back four and will be going all out for the league this year.

I think (and hope!) that we're over analysing the situation and it could backfire on us bigtime. Those fixtures!

Fixtures are great but the minute they concede he's getting max. 2 points because I doubt he'll offer anything other than clean sheet potential. When you can get attacking defenders like Trippier & Bertrand for the same price I fail to see the attraction.

Don't think Hernandez is as good as Defoe. Defoe played for a rubbish PL club and scored goals. Hernandez played for an above average Bundesliga club in a weaker league and didn't score as many goals.

I haven't been on much recently. Care to elaborate? I'm guessing by your username and post it has something to do with picking players that are

      A. Highly owned
      B. Owned only by a few geniuses.

Is that it, or am I missing something gargantuan?

      1. PvA
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Yes, there is a fine balance between the 2

It is essentially playing a mini-game within the FPL game. Using ownership to your advantage by following the "pack" but at the same time separating yourself from the pack

I think we let fear play a large part of it. Do close to 50% truly think that Lukaku is essential for the start? How much is his ownership playing the fixtures, do you think, or protecting against a captaincy haul?

Mourinho isn't likely to start going gung ho with his tactics, anytime soon imo. Perhaps Aguero or Jesus will turn out to be a much better option, plus even a couple of Liverpool mids.

          • 16 Years

I think it is because he scored a barrowload last year playing for a poor Everton, You stick him into a better team you expect him to do better. I think it's really that simple Gater

            • 16 Years

Yep, I can see that reasoning. But I bet there's a part of each Lukaku owner that is waiting for it to fail - maybe not because of Lukaku, but because of Mourinho's negative tactics.

Also, are we ready to put Lukaku in the same class as Aguero, Sanchez and Kane yet? I'm not sure we are.

It was the first time he's won our ML. I remember the last few weeks being a perfect storm for him, perhaps making up 70 points. Kane didn't seem such a threat when I had both Alli and Eriksen, but captain and TC really paid off against teams at the end of a long season.

Sometimes it goes your way (and often it does) and sometimes it doesn't, but I'd rather pick a team and pick players I personally rate, than copy another team and protect a lead. I've always been that way. It feels kind of like an insult playing any other way lol, but plainly, it's borderline silly at times. The common sense move would have been to get all his big hitters in and shut up shop.

Aye, nothing worse than someone doing that, there is no better feeling in this game than going against the grain and choosing someone you expect to do well and it comes off. Son was that man for me last season. Harry Kane won me my m/l on the last day too though, couldn't believe that my main threat didn't stick him in weeks before.

                • 16 Years

The damage had been done in DGW37, so I couldn't get Kane in for GW38 as I was trailing. I had to go differential (Lallana - who scored!), and hope Kane would stay quiet vs Hull. Well, we all know how that turned out!

Yep, I love identifying a few players before they catch on. Went with Coutinho and Mirallas a few years back, plus Michu from GW1 when he scored a brace. Stanislas and Lanzini had good little spells for me, and I got Pedro and Sané in nice and early. In the end, I need to make more of the obvious moves and reduce my transfer hits a little more. I threw away a top 10k finish by not having Kane at the crucial time.

McAuley is injured at the minute isn't he? Dawson still has 8 goals over the last 2 seasons, compared to McAuley's 7 in that time. Better underlying attacking stats too and a decade younger.

As I said Mcauley had his best ever season scoring 6 goals in one season and was a bonus point magnet. And one of the highest scoring FPL defenders.

Unless Weat Brom sign another defender I don't see that changing or why he can't have an even better season

He had his best goal scoring season but Dawson still had more shots on target and chances created than him.

McAuley turns 38 this year and has been having a few recurring injuries since the end of last season (played through them a lot).

Let's be realistic and look at his goals in the preceding seasons: 1 / 1 / 2 / 3 / 2. So 6 was a serious outlier, and at the very top end of the age expectancy for prem players he'll be unlikley to repeat the feat, let alone better it.

          1. Waxys
            • 8 Years

Yes 6 was amazing and I see no reason why he can't do even better what can I say some players peak later than others

McAuley a definite goal threat and no significant difference between 37 and 38. But last season was a serious outlier for him when it comes to goals. And they must surely be making contingency plans in case he hits a wall at some stage.

They are but at the moment we have no indication he isn't nailed on or has hit his peak.

Just looking at some of the 4.5m MID options. Thought these were the most interesting ones of the lot.

Loftus-Cheek: seems to have a spot now that FdB is drilling that 3-4-3 into the Palace side. Perhaps as the season opens up, he mwill be handed a more advanced role.

Carroll/ Mesa: Carroll his moments last year for Swansea, solid pick. Should be nailed with Roque Mesa and Fer in the midfield. Mesa more likely to be deeper.

Chalobah: Hard to say if he goes straight into the Watford side. One to monitor but probably shouldn't expect much more than 2/3 points per week if you end up relying on him.

Romeu/ Clasie/ Hojbjerg: Throughout preseason we'll probably get a better idea which is favoured by MP. With their run of fixtures, might not be a bad filler just in case you find them autosubbing in.

Cork: Should be guaranteed a place in Dyche's 11, playing well in preseason. Solid option.

Delph: If his supposed move to Stoke goes ahead, he could be a nice flair pick for when Stoke's fixtures ease up.

      I just couldn't chose:

      Fabianski
      Alonso - K'las - Trippier - Bertie - Cedric
      De Bruyne - Loftus-Cheek
      Kane - Lukaku - Lacazette

Elliot | T. Carroll, Romeu, Chalobah

First time I've seen Cork noted as an option - forgot he even existed. May choose him over Carroll.

I'm wondering whether starting with two 4.5s and playing one could be a good strategy, because after a couple of weeks, the chances are that one will have fantasy first 11 potential. Would allow a squad with Sanchez or a top-heavy 3-4-3

    Mourinho is a tactical genius.

    Mourinho never wastes a penny.

Mourinho who all the man united fans think is the best thing since sliced bread.

£200m on new players to only finish 3 points ahead of Van Gaal and to only score 5 more goals than Van Gaal. United fans are such mugs. There is no other way to look at. They should be calling for his head.

"Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm."

I am going to win Fantasy Premier League this season.
My gameplan will be simply too good and smart for anyone to beat me.

Yesterday that bid had already been accepted. Today they've submitted it. If Bild says so, though, it's 80-90% true.

Admittedly there's not many players like him around but £74m for a lad who's only had one season in a top league is crazy

The boy Keita is like Gerrard & Kante rolled into one.

An absolutely spiffing player. A game changer that one.

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez is willing to take a pay cut in order to join Manchester City this summer. The 28-year-old Chile international wants to join City in favour of Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. (Independent)

I love Sanchez but if he joins City then we may as well chuck our City picks out the window.

Pep is gonna have about three world class players for every position soon.

They need a CDM to play this formation and Carrick doesn't have the legs to do it for 90 mins every week.

    @Trigger

What are your general thoughts on how the community team is getting along?

Looks good, I do wonder if a different formation may have been chosen if we had, had the vote after Morata joined. However the plays chosen so far look the logical options

        • 9 Years

I think the formation and price structure choice is the best it could be really. The other top heavy options seem pretty short sighted to me. If 1 of the big hitters, that you barely scraped in, gets injured - you're in a bit of a tough situation.

Great idea to make a community team as it does make you reconsider what you're doing in your own team

Yes although it can make you question yourself when someone you select in your own team gets no votes

I'm assuming your audience are more experienced, so they must have their reasons. Whenever I 2nd guess my picks, I usually see the proper logic

Ben Davies then OR give up on the Spurs defence with the bigger pitch and allow for Alli/Erik/Kane
