Our summer series of members’ articles, offering an in-depth team-by-team analysis of the previous campaign, continues with Manchester United.

To get things up and running, we’ll look at the performance levels on a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements.

We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for early targets ahead of the new season.

Replacing Louis van Gaal as manager last May, Jose Mourinho could only manage a sixth-place finish in his first year in charge at Old Trafford.

This was, in part, due to the club’s successful march to Europa League success as Mourinho rotated his side towards the latter stages of the league season.

Despite adding big-name buys such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan in attack, the Red Devils netted just 54 times – up five on 2015/16 and only eighth best in the top-flight.

Meanwhile, a total of 69 points was just three more than their haul from Van Gaal’s final year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Are there any private leagues I could join?

    Either head-to-head or classic?

    Any top 10k/top 5k/top 2.5k finish leagues?

    Many thanks.

    Choose:

    A) Ramsey
    B) Redmond
    C) Phillips

    Have Willian & Zaha.

      Redmond.

Phillips has patches of good form but also these weird crises of self-confidence that Pulis has mentioned previously - was just my luck that he went through the latter straight after I selected him last year.

Don't like the Ramsey bandwagon on here. A few darts into the box in a pre-season friendly isn't enough evidence to suggest he's going to hit the form of 3 years ago.

I like Remond but I should have mentioned I have Forster, Bertrand & Austin right now. If Austin is nailed I think he's a better option than Redmond but if he's not than I'll probably get Redmond and Gayle.

    GW1 defence is overrated.
    Foster
Cedric Tomkins Martina (Francis + 4.0)
    Martial Ramsey Willian Zaha (Carroll)
    Kane Aguero Lukaku

Are plp picking Lukaku because his huge ownership or do you think he will score better than similar priced Aguero or cheaper options like Laca, Jesus and Morata?

He's by FAR the best United coverage (completely nailed and proven fantasy asset) and given their amazing fixtures, you'd be crazy not to include him.

Premier league experience over Laca and Morata. Both could take time to settle. Admittedly they could also explode whilst Lukaku struggles with the pressure, but I'll do it this way round. And I have Aguero

His fixtures and ownership. I think he'll start off well.

Think Kane and Lukaku are most likely to start well and i'm concerned they'll be hard to get in if off to a flyer. Easier to downgrade em to Morata/Lacazette/Jesus etc in a few weeks

Until I watched the United v City match, I thought Aguero may outscore Lukaku. But Kun was coming deep quite a lot, and United were looking very strong, so I'm going to monitor them.

      Kaku ownership is scary!

Currently, yes. Aguero is one of the best in the world imo. It's Pep I have the problem with.

But both players are at the opposite ends of their careers. Lukaku's goal record is eye-watering for a player of his age...

Good safe pick at 7.0 and should score 150+ again for the season! There is other mids with a higher ceiling if you prefer higher risk for more reward then go for Fab, Willian, Ramsey, Ritchie and try to rotate them in at the right time!

If Cedric is to miss the start of the season and VVD is still in his current situation come GW1, who are the best Saints options at the back?

Forster at £5m is safe and Bertrand is the premium pick at £5.5m.

Yoshida & Stephens 'should' start the season as they ended the last, alongside each other, at £5m each.

Pied seems to be right back of choice in Cedric's absence. At £4.5m he'll presumably offer a very cheap route into one of the leagues better back lines for GW1 at least.

Would Pied be worth the added risk, in hope of getting a few GWs out of him, or would it be better to stick with Forster and/or Bertrand?

    1. PvA
      • 9 Years

Don't think it's worth the risk personally. It's just a wasted FT or a hit in the first few gameweeks. If lucky it'll be 4+ weeks, but I doubt it barring injuries

    Lacazette vs Jesus? Both 10.5.

Lacazette more nailed as a starter and as a no. 9, of course.

On the other hand, don't really trust Arse & Lacazette to hit the ground running, and I fancy Jesus to plunder a bunch of goals in some of those first 10 GW fixtures.

There were signs last season that against weaker teams Pep was up for playing Aguero and Jesus together, with something like Sane-Silva-KDB-Sterling behind. (Pick your preference out of Silva 1 and Silva 2.) Not a lot of defending in that lot but if your plan is just to keep 95% posession...

How much importance to people place on growing your team value quickly in the game?
Is it significantly beneficial to do so, and if so, whats a decent figure to get it to?
Lastly, what are the best strategies to do so?
    Cheers!

Early wildcard + early transfers to jump on fast rising bandwagons. You can pick up a lot of value quickly. However not recommended if you're aiming for the top ranks. Had around 108m in value last season and final rank was around 19k.

More balance needed. Only 10 good players available every week and a 1-2 point merchant. If Bournemouth or Saints have a tough fixture your defence looks threadbare.

      Gabbi not nailed.

De he's not good enough value imo, unless just for the short run (opening fixtures).

Other than that solid except I'm not convinced by Lacazette and I'd hate to start without Kane.

If you have Cedric would you:

    A) Cedric > Yoshida and put Yoshida in starting 11

    C) Just bench Cedric and start Dunk?

    Community team

Ideas wanted on how it should handle weekly transfers.
One issue with voting will be it will rule out early transfers which may or may not be a hinderence.

Will hold a vote each week voting which player to kick out, although saving and hit will also be option on vote. Then once the kick out player is selected will be vote on repkacement.

Could be Thursday before process is complete

    Any better ideas?

      • 9 Years
      8 years, 4 months ago

Maybe do the vote 2 days before the deadline?

      Like you said, Thursday...

Seems like the safest choice to me as most mid-week games would be completed and there is still time for people to vote

Or just do the vote just over 24 hours before the deadline. You'd have to be available before all deadlines however.

        • 15 Years

After last game has finished is the safest bet. It would also mean people were voting with their heads and not because player A scored an hour earlier.
The downside could be that the team lags behind in the money making stakes

    2. Mini Mane Mo
      • 9 Years

Could hold a vote the day after each round's matches on action to take for the week, ie save, hit, replace. Following day could vote on replacements if needed.

With community team, it's probably impossible for process to be sped up.

Thanks for your hard work Nick!

I know it says "Community team", but I gotta ask just in case - this is not your own team, right? You don't plan on playing the game solely w the advice from the community, right? This is a second team in which you're testing the "level" of the community I presume.

Needs to be a two stage vote 1) decision on gaining team value ie: early trade and 2) normal trade before deadline.

Personally, I prefer either an Arsenal wing back or Kompany (if you can cope with the injury risk) to Bailly.

In my own team, I have opted to have Aguero + Mkhi over Lukaku + Sané but I'm not sure I feel so comfortable telling others to do the same. This also saves you 0.5 which you can use on Redmond to Ramsey.

Also prefer Aké to Cedric but by this point I'm just telling you my team.

As I said before, these are things I personally prefer but I'm not sure they're the best choices.

I am trying a completely new draft today it's a 442 without Austin obviously, but lots of the others are the same. So I like it.
This draft is the Kane Lukaku Alli one and I am trying to get Cout in the Redmond spot. Not much left for defence though.

      1. DantheManinaPan

That would probably require you to have a 4 man defence costing the same as this current 3 man defence, which is doable but tight
