Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Set-pieces too, 5.5. Rotation risk though, in a 4-2-3-1 expect him to challenge for RW.

I keep swaying from the big front 3 and then changing back. Just so many apparent banker options up top and so many doubts in midfield.

Top price fwd + mid price mid
    Seems safer than
Mid price fwd + top price fwd?

WBA could have a 4.5 starter: Hegazi.

Not that they're keeping it clean v Defoe & King like.

Pretty happy with this. Any way of getting city into this lot? Is Sou double up at back justified given fixtures?

    DeGea Elliot
    Trippier Bertrand Cedric Dawson Mee
    Alli Coutino Willian RLC Carroll
    Lukaku Kane Gayle

Yup I think double or tripling up on So'ton is justified. I am planning on 2 defenders and possibly Tadic.

What exactly constitutes an 'illegal approach' for a player? What did Liverpool do re VvD that is different to Barca re Coutinho for instance? Surely just about every transfer begins with a player being approached without the owning club's knowledge?

I think that totally legal way is that firstly club agrees with a selling club a certain fee, and then enters negotiations with the player.

Jesus is worth the £1.0m over Aguero. Virtually every game he played in last season he scored or assisted leading to an insane PPM. Played out wide for a couple of those at the end of the season too

    4-3-3..
    Foster
    Dawson Trippier Cédric Daniels
    Coutinho Willian Alli
    Chicharito Kane Lukaku

    Subs: Elliot Romeu Carroll Long
    1.5m banked for upgrades:

    a Coutinho to KDB?
    b Willian to Sane?
    c Chicharito to Benteke/Defoe/Rashford?
    d 5.0m def to 6/6.5m Def ?
    e Foster to Forster/DDG?
    f Romeu to 6.0m Mid?
g No upgrade to GW2/3 as I have 14 starting players (hopefully!!)

Still fairly new to this, so thoughts, comments from you old hands much appreciated.

          Stansilas......Good player, if he's a regular.
The problem is guessing who are the likely starters as squads (particularly the top 6-7) are getting larger to meet the demands of all the competitions.
I can imagine a day when Chelsea or Man C will have separate squads for Europe, for the PL and the FA/League Cups

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going Tadic for now but have Redmond in my thoughts still.
I know what you mean about Ramsey and Zaha, but I have heard Ramsey has been very attacking in pre season and I really rate Zaha. Also, not a huge fan of double Chelsea in first few weeks.
Other alternative could be dropping Jesus for KdB and bringing in Austin for Tadic?

Thanks mate! I hope he does too! I know what you mean about Kane, but I don't love Spurs fixtures, and Kane and Spurs always start slowly. And agreed, Jesus and Aguero could be risky. What do you reckon about changing Jesus to KdB and maybe bringing in Austin for Tadic. Do like Tadic though!

Just a lost Norwegian here, asking for some advice 🙂 Please rate my team:

    Foster (Elliot)

Cédric – Trippier – Aké (Mee, Hünemeier)

Willian – Coutinho – De Bruyne – Phillips (T. Carroll)

    Kane – Lukaku – Chicharito

The second one is what I hear my Spanish neighbour shouting through the wall every night.

Now I know why - she's practicing for when she captains Jesus!

I think we may get away with Elliot + 4m fodder.

That would be great. Hate spending money on goalkeepers

Me too. It would allow many of us to get Chicha.

    A) 3-5-2 with Ritchie
    B) 3-4-3 with Gayle

Which is the better option? Would rather not have both, but can't see any other viable 3rd striker options apart from Gayle.

chose to go with 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 for the first time ever, usually play with 3 men upfront

    Forster ( Elliot )
    Bellerin - Cedric - Dawson- trippier ( long )
    KDB- Mkhitaryan - Willian - Phillips ( Ince )
    Lukaku-Kane (Fletcher)

    too anxious about it tbh.

I'd downgrade Ince and up either Bellerin or one of the mids

tbh I'd rather downgrade Phillips, Ince is doing really well scoring 4 goals out of 5 games in the pre season, If he carries that form into the premier league with Huddersfield getting a good run of games he would be a great differential

    How about this

    Forster | (Elliot)
    Alonso | Trippier | Walker/Mendy | Cedric | (Rangel)
    Ali | JWP | Zaha | ( RLC | Carroll)
    Jesus | Lukaku | Morata

That´s a lot of money invested in your back four. Maybe downgrade Walker/Mendy in order to upgrade JWP or Zaha to Willian (who is underpriced and will deliver points in Hazards absence in my opinion). Morata is unproven in PL and Jesus may suddenly play on the wing. How about Chicharito – Lukaku – Kane upfront?

Phillips is very decent value, given early fixtures
