Brighton and Hove Albion have bolstered their attacking options ahead of their maiden Premier League campaign with the signing of Chelsea’s Izzy Brown on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old was part of the Huddersfield Town squad that gained promotion to the top flight last season, and Seagulls boss Chris Hughton believes the versatile Brown can continue his development at the Amex Stadium:

“He can play on either flank and he’s done that right the way through his upbringing. He went out on loan to Holland in what was his first loan and played out on the left. At Rotherham, he played up front and at Huddersfield Town he played at number ten. He gives us good scope in the front areas, he’s developing and hopefully, he can develop here.â€

The History

Brown began his youth career with a brief spell at Leicester City before joining West Bromwich Albion in 2011 at the age of 14.

He made his professional debut for the Baggies as a substitute in a 3-2 win over Wigan Athletic in May 2013, becoming the second youngest player in Premier League history, aged just 16 years and 117 days old.

In the summer of 2013, Brown signed for Chelsea, although to date he has only made one senior appearance for the Blues, ironically against West Brom in May 2015.

In order to gain first-team experience, Brown was sent on a season-long loan to Dutch outfit Vitesse Arnhem in July 2015.

He racked up 22 league appearances in total, making 12 starts, but only registered one goal and an assist.

Last season, Brown spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Championship side Rotherham United.

He was a regular starter for the Millers and made 20 appearances, managing three goals and five assists.

He then joined Huddersfield in January 2017 for the remainder of the season and produced five goals in 18 matches as the Terriers gained promotion via the play-offs.

Brown has represented England at U16, U17, U19 and U20 levels, scoring 10 goals in 36 outings.

The Prospects

Given Brighton’s relatively small squad, the addition of the versatile Brown will provide Hughton with a number of different options in attack.

The 20-year-old played predominantly as a support striker last season, although he is equally comfortable operating on either flank or even as a centre forward.

Brown is very adept at finding pockets of space in between the lines and is at his most dangerous on the half-turn and driving at the opposition defence.

While not blessed with blistering pace, Brown possesses quick feet and the vision to pick the right pass in the final third.

He also offers a goal threat, particularly when cutting in from the left – the position he started in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Southend United on Tuesday night – and has a knack for scoring from distance.

Last season, Hughton generally favoured one of Jamie Murphy, Solly March or Jiri Skalak on the left of a four-man midfield, with Anthony Knockaert the regular starter down the right.

Summer signing Pascal Gross could well get the nod in a central attacking midfield role if Hughton opts for a slightly more conservative 4-4-1-1 formation in the top flight, but Brown may also come into the reckoning in that position.

The 33-year-old Glenn Murray currently appears the favourite to lead the line for the Seagulls, although it’s likely Hughton will bring in another striker before the transfer window closes.

Brown has been handed a price tag of 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), placing him in the same price bracket as Gross, with Knockaert slightly more expensive on the budget at 6.0.

He’s priced more favourably in Sky Sports, though, coming in at 7.0, compared to 7.3 for Gross and a whopping 8.5 for Knockaert.

Comparing the trio’s underlying statistics from last season, Brown averaged a shot every 46.3 minutes, unsurprisingly inferior to Knockaert (35.6) but stronger than Gross (53.55).

Gross was hugely creative for Ingolstadt last term, though, averaging a key pass every 27.9 minutes, outshining both Knockaert (40.5) and Brown (54.47).

The big disadvantage for Brown is that he’s not expected to compete for set-piece duties, with Knockaert, Gross and left-back Markus Suttner ahead of him in that queue.

With Knockaert an injury concern for the start of the season after damaging ankle ligaments during a pre-season friendly, Brown looks to have a good chance of forcing his way into the starting XI.

Brighton begin their campaign with a difficult home fixture against Manchester City before a more favourable run of matches (lei wat WBA bou NEW) up to Gameweek 6.

Investing in the Seagulls attack could pay off based on the opening schedule, although with four teams scoring more goals than the 74 that Hughton’s men managed last season, there is a concern over their potency in the final third.

Hughton is a fairly conservative coach – his Norwich City side only scored 41 goals in 2012/13 and a meagre 28 when they were relegated the following season.

As a result, there may be no guarantees that an attacking player such as Brown will start week-in, week-out as a wide player in a four-man midfield, hindering his Fantasy appeal unless he nails down a more advanced role.

At this point, it’s Gross and Knockaert (when he’s back to full fitness), who look the safer bets, then, although there’s little doubt that Brown has the talent to be a factor over the course of the season.

Should he get those regular starts and be given the freedom to express himself, he could yet emerge as a viable budget option.

    • Bellerin (4.2) • Clyne (3.7) • Milner (3.8) • Valencia (4.1) • Walker (4.2) • Mendy (4.1) ????

I need one more premium defender with goal/assist capability.
Please choose based on long-term points scoring and likely game time!

Currently swaying towards Bellerin (is he staying?) or Clyne/Milner as I have 0 Arsenal or Liverpool players...

Not sure. I don't love any of the others tbh. Oxlade-Chamberlain is a threat to Bellerin. Clyne produced great stats last season but hardly any returns and Liverpool aren't great defensively. Robertson is a threat to Milner. Walker and Mendy could be rotated with Danilo.

          What about Kompany?

Good point about Ox - I had seen Bellerin as having no competition.
            And you say that but: Walker 150pts | Bellerin 147pts | Valencia 137pts | Milner 133pts | Clyne 127pts
Clyne wasnt that far behind.. TFF works it out a little different with key contributions as well as assists but all high scorers with not a lot between them.

            Na not keen on Kompany

In the Telegraph game, I would go with Valencia, Bellerin, or Milner. Milner is a rotation risk but his goal scoring capacity is far bigger than the rest.

Probably Valencia first and Milner second.

Do you plan to rotate GK's? If not maybe switch to Myhill for guarenteed starting XI if Foster is dropped
Unsure myself about Kompany - maybe a Man Utd defender would be more beneficial?
Only real option is Bailly though so depends on your preference

Solid team though - nobody stands out as a worry or weakness

My main doubt is Mkhi. I like him a lot as an early season punt but not sure if I have the balls to go through it. Should I find the extra million for a Liverpool mid? Could downgrade Suttner and Ayew to fodder leaving me with just Carroll as a playing sub.

Between Ryan Fraser, Aaron Mooy and popping down to 5.0 on Puncheon or Mili.

I like Ryan Fraser, actually;. he returned 100 points in 1764 mins last season. This translates in 19.7 games worth of football (1769/90). That gives us a points per game of 5.07 which is super healthy for the season. He also has the dubious honour of having "won" the most penalties last season (http://www.squawka.com/news/ryan-fraser-has-won-more-penalties-than-any-premier-league-player-this-season/927869).

Obviously it depends if Howe plays him, but the sense of "proven quality" is nice and he could well kick on this term, and be a nice "set and forget" punt at 5.5 in the 4th midfield. Not denying Mooy is, but the sense of a PL track record swings it toward RF for me.

I'm on Puncheon at the moment as it allows me to squeeze Kun in for a "top heavy" front 3, btw. But definitely prefer RF.

Do you believe there's a decent chance Fraser will start?

Would be lovely to have a pick like that at 4th mid and a saving of .5 on Phillips to spend elsewhere.

Agreed on Brown, guys - the 5.5 is prohibitive, and he will need both a fall in price and a perfect storm of fixtures, form and injuries for a bandwagon to form. Have to always cover that eventuality as you don't ever know, but definitely feel like he'll be a nice-to-watch player (if/when he does play) but an FPL irrelevance 🙂

Danny Murphy reckons Harry Kane can't sustain his goal scoring because according to in-depth Opta stats, he shouldn't be scoring as much as he has in the last 2 seasons.. and his goal conversion rate is too high to maintain (Like Vardy 2 seasons ago).

Is he talking out of his backside or do you think he has a point?

Kane is a great finisher - there is nothing unsustainable about that.

He scored 21 in 34 (several subs) in 14-15, 25 in 38 in 16-17 and then 29 in 30 last season. It's a genuine consistency - I don't think he will improve this season, and no WHL will have an effect, but I expect him to score around 25 if he stays fit

My friend who's a Spurs fan used to make YouTube videos on Kane before he got into the first team. He did scout reports on him and everyone said he'd never make it as a top player..

He's kind of had a freak first season, which plenty of players have had. Michu and Vardy for example. But he's done it again last season so I agree it's hard to get against him. But when I think about it, it wouldn't surprise me if he had a poor season.

        It's just an interesting debate.

He had a 'freak' first season when he was 21, can we not call that a breakthrough year, surely? he's done it again and better twice since that season, and is still only 23!

            • 9 Years

            Exactly.

He won't get any worse. I think if Spurs create a bit more chances then he'll only maintain this amazing goal record.

I genuinely think Kane is a player who can keep doing it whereas Vardy isn't. Vardy was so fortunate that most of his shots just went in. He had the football god's with him!

Reckon he can get near Alan Shearer's record?

His conversion rate last year was 27.5%

      Lukaku's was 26%, Ibra - 25%, Suarez - 23.5%, Lacazette - 29%.

Talking out the backside i'm afraid

Not sure where these stats have come from but they look way off.

When I look at the conversion rates based on the OPTA stats in the members area here I see:

        Kane: 26.4%
        Lukaku: 22.7%
        Ibrahimovic: 14.8%

(Obviously Suarez and Lacazette don't feature)

Looking at Kane's previous 2 seasons, in 15/16 his conversion rate was 15.7% and in 14/15 it was 18.8%

His conversion rate went through the roof last season because he took way less shots but scored more goals which does make it an interesting question about just how sustainable it is. Perhaps he improved his game and took less wild shots from distance, perhaps he simply became a world class finisher but last season was definitely unusual from a stats perspective...

Personally I expect him to still score lots of goals because he's excellent but I do also think he might need to take a few more shots to do it this season.

Not sure where Murphy is getting this from. Clearly his conversion rate is high but then there are simply strikers out there who are stronger finishers and Kane is one of them.

He's shown it over a number of seasons now and while he's yet to prove it CL or international level to the same extent, we are only interested in PL.

For me, Murphy suggests something that's worth us monitoring but, as it stands, there's little evidence to suggest this that I can see.

Maybe he has a personal agenda against him?

I thought I'd share his point seeing as he has some credible points but it's also really unreliable.

When I do my research for FPL, one of the things I look at it goal conversion rate. Because their conversion rates are very different, I separate shots and goals inside the box and outside the box. Here's what I found:

Over his 3 PL seasons, Kane shot 27.6% inside the box and 6.3% outside the box. That 27.6% is very high and is a testament to his incredible finishing ability. However, Kane shot 35.3% inside the box last season, higher than his already ridiculously high career rate. Likewise, he shot a whopping 11.9% on shots outside the box. He likes to take long shots, which have a lower conversion rate than shots in the box, so his conversion rate looks lower than it effectively was.

If Kane took the same shots last season and converted at his career rates, it comes out to 21.4 goals, significantly less than the 29 he actually scored. Of course, that's still outstanding and if you prorate that number over 38 games (he missed time last year), he would have had 29 anyway.

So some stats (per 90 minutes):

        16/17: 0.85 non-penalty goals, 2.43 shots inside the box
        15/16: 0.54 NPG90, 2.81 SIB90
        14/15: 0.66 NPG90, 2.29 SIB90.

Clearly he outperformed his underlying stats in 16/17, and converted more of his shots than in previous years. See analysis here suggesting he did in 14/15 as well (outperformed expected goals by 68 %): https://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/harry-kane-is-premier-leagues-luckiest-player/ Personally I don't do modelling of expected goals, but Kane is one of those players that outperform this metric, Messi another. Some of this is likely to be luck, some is going to be down to skill.

A reasonable guess might for example be that he should be expected to outperform expected goals by 20-30 % due to skill, but there is really no way to know without doing modelling. Would love to see people going beyond expected goals and quantifying finishing skill.

I think where stats like these fall down is in their inability to take into account a player's natural improvement (or decline). Compared to a "normal" striker, yes I'm sure Kane's exceptional conversion rate does look unsustainable. But it could be that he is also an exceptional striker, who is improving year on year. I'm sure the stats of Ronaldo, Messi, Lewandowski, Suarez, et al, all looked "unsustainable", in the early part of their careers.

The skill in FPL lies in the interpretation of these stats, and seperating the Kane's from the Ighalo's.

I think it's sustainable if you look at the goals he scores and the attitude that brought him golden boot last season.

He can takes long shots, he can clinically finish, that glancing diving header her scored in the FA Cup, penalties, his teammates abilities all make for a just case that he can continue and improve

Was about to ask the same but there is a fear that Rondon starts upfront and Jrod as a winger. Those fixtures looks so good that even a team like Wbrom should score a few.

Getting JRod allows me to fill all the other attacking spots with players I really want.

Him on the wing wouldn't be great though

Depends if JRod is on the wing or a replacement for Berahino in the support role. Looking like he's getting chances in pre season games (even though watching WBA is like watching paint dry)

          My issue is four fold.

          Kane is a necessity imo.
          Lukaku has early fixtures.
Jesus is a rotation risk because of Aguero, or may play wide because of Aguero.
KDB is more set in stone and is 0.5 cheaper.
