Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.â€

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

I'd say A atm. I think Alonso could have a field day v Burnley and even in the event of Kane and KDB were to outscore Alli/Jesus, I think Alonso could tip the scales in favour of A

I am happier with ,y team now. This season I believe that Mhikytaryan will reproduce his Bundesliga form. I was also determined to have a solid defence., making use of points from clean sheets and assists. Ince is having a good pre season, the fixtures for Huddersfield are favourable. The only possible weakness is Kompany who I believe is injury prone. I would be interested to hear what others think.
    FORSTER
    KOMPANY ALONSO TRIPPIER
    KDB WILLIAN INCE MKHYTARYAN
    DEFOE LAKAKU JESUS

Oh man, for sure he is! Didn't he start the first two games last year with goals in addition to finishing with 3 goals at the end (those points at the end helped me rally alot in the last few weeks of horrendous FPL season)?

Can somebody, anybody PLEASE help me with draft/rank rules have asked several times now.

We have a draft league of 8 but one of our players cannot make the draft time and we assumed he could rank his players 1-150 etc and the draft would pick his team automatically when it's his turn.

Is this not possible? It looks like the rank is pre set to price. You can change the priority of your watchlist but NOT the rank? I cannot find anything in the rules about changing this? Is there no way of doing a draft unless you physically pick it yourself or will it ALWAYS default your pick to the next most expensive player in the game?

    Thanks!!

In the game rules it says: "Before the draft takes place you are able to create a priority watchlist of players. This list can help quickly identify potential picks during the draft and will also be used to automatically draft a player if you aren't available to participate."

I assume therefore the watchlist *is* what you're looking for but I'm no expert.

See my post below, I've an issue with the watchlist.
Once you've picked your watchlist I can't see how you can change the order even though there looks like a function key/arrows to do so?

I haven't even joined a league yet so tricky for me to test but I heard some noise about elements being a bit dodgy in Chrome. Not sure what browser you're using but try another maybe?

If you still can't get it to work I'll create a fake league so that I can see what's what.

    Morning chaps, thoughts on the below please;

    Foster
    Lindelof - Holding - Martina
    Salah - Pogba - Bernardo - Redmond
    Morata - Lukaku - Jesus

    Elliot - Dunk - McArthur - £4m def

I'm thinking of swaping Pogba for Mhki,

Bernardo was one of the first names on my list but not sure he'll start now.

Martina is interchangeable with Holgate as they're the same cost. In fact I have the choice of any two £4.5m defenders so any advice welcome.

I was at the Everton match last night. Going fwd Martina was okay but defensively appallingly weak. As Baines isnt the strongest, I cant see Koeman playing Martina or Holgate week in, week out. I think Holgate will start v Stoke first 5 epl games, when clear of them I expect Kenny to be vying with them both Martina. Kenny is a better right back than Holgate, Martina yet to be seen.

In short, leave Everton right backs out of your defence.

i was pitchside keane ,and later rooney ,had to tell martina where to play-maybe getting used to system.

        Good advice.

Your defense will cause you problems.
Everton tricky fixtures, Holding (Arsenal?) not really secure is he and Lindelof is new to the League and struggling in Preseason.

This leaves you with Dunk (Who I think will be a great FPL player) and somebody not playing at all (4.0).

Redmond a potential rotation risk, and who is Bernardo?
McArthur probably won't be getting more than 2 or 3 a game but is fine for 4.5 bench player

      1. Herc
        • 9 Years

Bernardo Silva - £40m signing for City 🙂

I think Holding is a decent shout. He was impressive in the last few games of last season and if Arse are going to play 3 at the back again then he it's him vs Monreal for the third berth.

The potential merger with DraftKings and ongoing issues with that have had a knock on and both have taken a step back with their UK offering for now. It is a shame but I think the game, as we know it, will be back once things settle down for them. Certainly for next season.

In the meantime, we've got news of a new DFS partner coming next week.

We'll be ok for sofas to hide behind then. I'm assuming they're currently in a sale.

Ah, that makes sense, thanks Mark. Worthwhile withdrawing any funds still on my account then.

Defender with the bigggest return potential under 4.5?

    I was thinking naughton :/

Naughton's not under 4., if it's a 4.5m you are after then Simpson is also a good option.

How's this? Thinking to alternate between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 depending on matchups.
Should I downgrade the front to invest more in mid? Too much Crystal mid?

    0.5 in bank

    Foster, Elliot
    Lindelof, Trippier, Cedric, Hunemeier, Rengel
    Alli, RLC, Willian, Zaha, McArthur
    Lukaku, Kane, Lacazette

Consider dropping Lacazette and investing the rest of your money elsewhere.
Lacazette and Lindelof are new to the PL and could take time to settle... Lindelof might not even start the first few games the way his preseason is going... Rangel probably won't start, will Hunemeier?, and that Palace midfield is overkill... McArthur in particular won't score to many points if he playing further back.

Bench is too weak - 2x 4.0 Defs and 2x 4.5 mids will cost you eventually.

      2x4m defs + 2x4.5mids ? No good mate!

And Zaha RLC McArthur is bit too much indeed. 😀

First RMT post and I think I'm very close to my starting squad.
Some fine tuning points that I'm looking at thought

    Foster/Myhill
    Alonso/Dawson/Trippier/Bertrand (Dunk)
    KDB/Mkhi/Tadic (RLC/Carroll)
    Kane/Kaku/Austin.

    Issues:
    1) Bertrand + Austin >>> Cedric + Chicharito (I'm worried about Austin's minutes)
    2) Kompany in.... directly for Alonso (Fixtures basically)
    3) Kompany in.... Tadic+Trippier >>> Phillips+Kompany.

Any thoughts on those last 3 issues would be appreciated.

I prefer Bertrand and Austin mentally for potential, but I'm sticking myself with Cedric and Chich just for game time. I'd say the earlier is more of a gamble but

        Thanks.
I didn't mention it, but is nobody worried about Cedric not playing any preseason yet?

I think it's ok to start without a Chelsea defender. Man City/MU have better fixtures.

Ive seen this guy play with pretty much a mashed up ankle.

14 days is a long time to get over a flu/cold

    How am I looking?

    Foster / Elliott
    Trip / 5.5 (MU probs)/ Francis / Naughton / Long
    Sanchez / Alli / Willian / Phillips / TC
    Kaku / Austin / Jesus

    0.0 itb

If Sanchez goes, or looks uncertain - KDB/Kane in for Sanchez/Jesus.

Decent defence - I like the 3 rotating cheats with Spurs and Man Utd

Decent mids but I'd watch Sanchez. He's signing for City but it could drag out

Decent forwards - no Kane like me but you have Alli

      8/10
