Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

Thoughts on cheap mids & premium defenders with pens/set piece involvement:

    - Richie / Mooy / Milivojevic - Pick 2. One playing, one bench fodder/rotation

    - Alonso / Milner - Pick 1. Always playing

Leaning towards Richie, Mili & Milner

Concerns about game time security etc. What do we think?

I think he's a shoe-in for goals especially first half of the season as that's what Arsenal do, definitely one of the new signings this year who I believe will bed straight in

      Wait and see.
I'm sure he will get goals as time goes on, but feel he will need to settle into the league SOO many great players before him.

Plus, why take that risk when you already have Kane, Kaku, Jesus and Aguero who are proven goal scorers in the league to choose form already?

Btw, I think Morato is in the same position, except he has worse fixtures.

    Hi Guys,

First post so go easy on me:

Which is the best first 11 to go with? - bench is just fodder

    A) Foster
    Tripper,Daniels, Alonso
    Willian, Alli, Coutinho, KDB
    Austin, Defoe, Lukaku

    B) Foster
    Trippier, Daniels, Alonso, Kompany
    Willian, Coutinho, KDB, RLC
    Kane Lukaku

    1. MattyW

      B definitely

    2. ajones1608

Tough one, as I don't think Defoe will get all the game time with King & Wilson (however if he does then good choice). Same goes for RLC & Austin.

So can't really decide but I like the look of it for sure

      1. CrazyG

      So...

      Alli, Austin, Defoe

      vs

      Kompany, RLC, Kane

I prefer A broadly speaking but not sure I rate Austin's chances of being nailed on unfortunately. If you're confident on his minutes then I'd go for that but I'm pretty 'traditional' in my approach 🙂

I feel I have a decent enough team but still a a few questions. What does every one else think? This is my team at the moment.

    Foster, Elliot,
    Milner, Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric, Rangel
    Salah, Alli, Willian, Ince, Carroll,
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin

I've kept 0.5 in the bank in case Austin doesn't start, if he turns out not to be first choice I can then upgrade to gabbiadini or chicarito fairly easy.

The question is do I keep the 0.5 in the bank for that reason. Or shall I swap Milner for Kompany and upgrade Carroll to Walters.

Or does anyone have any other suggestions.
    Cheers

Really ? One of the highest scorers in midfield last year in Alli, Salah covers Liverpool midfield and has the potential to score very high. Willian covers Chelsea whilst Hazard is out. Leaves Ince who can't stop scoring with decent enough fixtures. And the standard 4.5 midfielder most teams have.

        1. Ryssel

I think your midfield is fine.

Maybe can Lindelof and use the cash to upgrade Milner....
Monitor that obviously..... Milner a bit injured, Lindelof not playing well and might need time to settle.

That said.... wouldn't it be great if Roberson starts and Milner gets moved back to a midfield position? 🙂

I know the Milivojevic pick is a bit punty, but I feel like he could pay off.

    Too much spent in defense:

    De Gea (Elliot)

    Trippier Bertrand Daniels ( Dunk, 4.0 )

    KDB Coutinho Willian Milivojevic

    Kane Lukaku Austin

Francis and Foster aren't ideal, I know, but worth it to fit the attacking 6 in?

    Foster
    Trippier, Bertrand, Cedric, Francis
    Alli, Coutinho, Willian
    Lukaku, Jesus, Lacazette

    Myhill; Carroll, RLC?, Rangel

Bertrand could become Mustafi/Lindelof, but his fixtures are so good and unclear if Lindelof starts.

Nice team.Very similar to mine but I have 3-4-3 with 5.5 mid instead of defender.Looking at that,Tripper may be a better bet than Murray.Time will tell.Good luck!

I like nearly every pick you made.... the only difference is that I prefer Dunk as my 4.5 (he is on the bench at the moment though).

No Kane though.... He was the first player I picked and hasn't moved.

If Sanchez leaves, Iwobi a likely starter?

If they don't sign a replacement (they will, probably Mahrez/Lemar) then yes

    Current team:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trppier-Dawson-Cedric (Mee-Rangel)
    Willian-Redmond-Eriksen-Coutinho (RLC)
    Lukaku-Jesus (Gayle)

2.5 ITB who to upgrade? Thinking about KDB/Kane instead of Eriksen/Jesus but i feel like the extra money is better to place somewhere else?

      Upgrade Dawson?

        Why?
Dawson has great fixtures, plays in a team that prioritizes defense and offers a goal threat.

Money in the bank allows you to move early on any bandwagons.... but I think you would be better off starting with either Kane or KDB.

      Are you happy with Redmond?

I thought about swapping redmond for Sane if he is nailed, and then perhaps swap Gayle for Austin to keep 2 Souhampton because of good fixtures. Then i would have enough City/Tottenham without getting KDB/Kane in IMO.

People are worried, justifiably z about Agüero playing as many minutes as you'd want for 11.5.

Also Lukaku's ~50% ownership is a tad frightening if you don't have him.

      3/10

Lloris not worth the extra so downgrade.
Van dijk not going to play for Southampton again potentially, i would ditch to yoshida.
Lindelof to a proven defender with more attacking threat.
Move Keane to a 4.0 and have Francis as your 4th defender, you don't need 5 playing defenders 4 will do.
Hazard to a playing chelsea midfielder.
Pogba to mikhi as more attacking and playing further forward.
Upgrade gungdoan to someone who isn't injured.
      T.caroll better than rlc
      Upgrade firminho and abraham.

      Other than that it's great!

Balance all wrong for me sorry.

    How's it look?

    De Gea
    Cedric, Trippier, Alonso, Dawson
    Willian, Coutinho, Sane*, Redmond
    Lukaku, Kane

Would you leave it or downgrade De gea and Dawson for Sane > KDB?

Difficult to tell as he's never played a professional match for us but I certainly would have thought so. CL rotation would be a concern though.

I think they will all be rotation both personnal & position as that's how Klopp works. Could see them all fitting in with Solanke missing out but I would say he would be the first to go if they were to play a defensive game.

      Pretty safe.

Big thing to bear in mind is the UCL qualifiers, which straddle GW1-2 and GW2-3 (I understand). I don't think we'll see rotation city, but it could be a factor in team selection, with players like Salah only maybe getting 60 mins and maybe returnees from injury such as Mane having their minutes managed.

I'd say he's at a slight risk, can't play everyone and both him and Mane will be competing for the same position when fit (one will likely play on the other flank as opposed to being benched).

Depends whether Coutinho stays and Keita signs. If both happen it's another player to contend with so there could be some rotation, meaning I'd say Coutinho is the best pick.
