Skipper Leighton Baines grabs the winner as Everton labour to victory in the first leg of their Europa League third round qualifying tie.

Here are the notes from a testing night for the Toffees.

Everton 1 MFK Ruzomberok 0

Leighton Baines’ deflected strike gave Everton something to defend ahead of what is likely to be a tricky trip to Slovakia for the second leg of their Europa League qualifying tie.

While Ronald Koeman’s men were still getting to grips with pre-season, their opponents had already played one league match and beaten Norwegians SK Brann over two legs to earn their visit to Goodison.

So there was always a feeling that this could be a step too soon for the Toffees.

And so it proved.

Everton were slightly off the pace for much of the encounter, and it took the second-half introduction of new signing Sandro to bring some directness and intent into their attacking play.

Koeman handed competitive debuts to defenders Michael Keane and Cuco Martina, though Jordan Pickford – with just 45 minutes in pre-season behind him – lost out to Maarten Stekelenburg in goal.

Davy Klaasen was part of the midfield three in a 4-3-2-1 formation.

The returning Wayne Rooney played through the middle up front, supported from the flanks by Kevin Mirallas, who was handed set-piece duties, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Keane was assured throughout, Martina considerably less so, while Klaasen showed the odd flash of creative ability but might need to demonstrate a lot more – and quickly – should Everton finally land long-time transfer target Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Ruzoberok were resolute in defence and quick to counter, forcing a couple of smart saves from Stekelenburg before Sandro, who replaced Calvert-Lewin, changed the tie’s dynamic.

Rooney was pushed out to the right to accommodate the Spaniard, whose willingness to run behind the back four finally stretched the Slovakians’ defence, allowing the hosts to apply some sustained pressure from which Baines’ winner eventually came.

Post-match, Koeman was quick to praise the impact of Sandro.

“Sandro brought pace to the team, he showed good movement and that gave Wayne more freedom to play from the right side.”

But the manager also told ITV Sport that he is keen to bring in another striker – not what the 20.9% of FPL manager who own Rooney wanted to hear.

Then again, Everton’s opening schedule is sufficiently harsh – involving four of last season’s top six by the middle of September – that early investment in any of their assets looks decidedly risky.

A clean sheet could boost the stock of the 13.0%-owned Keane, while the goal from the ever-reliable Baines (10.3%) was another reminder of his Fantasy pedigree.

But major backing of Everton players looks to be a strategy for the longer term, or at least a good deal later than this very early competitive start to the season.

Everton: Stekelenburg; Martina, Keane, Williams, Baines; Gueye, Schneiderlin, Klaassen (Davies 86); Mirallas (Lookman 82), Calvert-Lewin (Sandro 61); Rooney.
Subs not used: Pickford, Jagielka, Holgate, Barry.

Starting to get happy with my team. Thoughts?

    Foster, (Myhill)
    Valencia, Trippier, Monreal (Simpson, Hunmeier)
    KDB, Willian, Zaha, Tadic (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Gayle

Monreal nailed? Otherwise not sure about Gayle and Tadic. Perhaps downgrade Valencia?

I was going to say i did not like Gayle as he has not really done it in the Prem. However, he came off the bench most of the time i recall.

I think he is first choice and look at Newcastles fixtures.

Don't like Tadic. I had him in my Sun Team last year and he is so frustrating.

Also Foster and Valencia is 11m

      DDG and Cedric costs 10.5m.

    Pick two 7m midfielders?

    I'm on Zaha and William.

Zaha as he scored 149 points last season and William becuase he is playing far forward for the champions.

Ramsey scored 146 points in his best season (13/14)

I'm on Willian and Ramsey. Ramsey would probably have broken 200 points that season if he hadn't got injured. I'm gambling on him thriving in a new formation and for some reason I've never bought into Zaha that much.

      Good points both.

Thank you. For some reason, never realised he only played 1700 odd minutes.

On Zaha and Willian as well. I think Ramsey will be a good pick but I expect Arsenal to start slowly as usual. When they/he show some form I'll make the switch. Remember, we're not picking our teams for the whole season. HUD and SWA in GWs 1 and 3 look tasty for Zaha.

We haven't got too much data to go on - 10 games, in two of those games he did contribute more than appearances - but the signs are that he's a defensive player and those two games were the exception rather than the rule.

He scored two against WBA in a game where they defended horrifically as well and just let him waltz through.

Yeah it's not the best. He was definitely one I thought was a red herring and avoided! Did get suckered in by others (Mirallas early on; Rondon later) but not by the Gundogwagon

Not a fan of the Chelsea midfield double up. No Spurs attack is a worry. Don't see the point of owning Trippier if you're going to bench him against a newly promoted team.

I have a question regarding the "Projections" section of the members site.

I would like to calculate the players with maximum projected points in a valid formation from the first 3 game weeks with a £82.5 budget. Is there anyway to do this on the site? Or will I have to calculate it manually?

So far, my manual calculations show this as the best starting 11:

    Foster
    Cedric Bertrand Valencia Walker Trippier
    RLC KDB
    Jesus Lukaku Kane

    Elliot Oriol TCarrol Mesa

Manual process I'm afraid. You could probably write some formulae/code to do it if you're sufficiently technical and motivated 🙂

You think? RMT doesn't have an 'optimum team' option. I interpreted the request as being 'can it auto-calculate the line up with the best projections?' to which the answer is no.

          But maybe you're right.

          RMT is great! 😀

Two different teams which are you picking please ?

    A) Foster, Elliot,
    Milner, Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric, Rangel
    Alli, Salah, Willian, Ince, Carroll
    Lukaku, Jesus, Austin
    0.5 ITB

    Or
    B) Foster, Elliot
    Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric, Mee, Rangel,
De Bruyne, Alli, Salah, Walters, Carroll
    Lukaku, Lacazette, Austin
    0 ITB

    Or Any other suggestions?

A - I'd rather have Coutinho in my team over Salah though. Also Jesus may be a risk.

Most people are going Coutinho though, no guarantee he is still going to be here. Salah has looked dangerous pre season.

        Other option is
        The B team but swap

        De Bruyne and Walters
        For
        Sane and Willian

Going to take half your advice, cheers.
            Foster/Elliot
            Trippier, Lindehof, Cedric, Mee, Rangel
            Alli, Coutinho, Sane, Willian, Carroll,
            Lukaku, Lacazette, Austin

Got an attacking player from each of the big 6 so fairly happy.

Bailly or Tripper in a 343 with an expected WC around GW6? Currently have double Saints defence and WBA, along with a £4m GK and two £4m defenders

Trippier I'm keeping from the start. Might've risen above 5.5 by then.

Worry about the double Saints defence, the beginning is an utter crapshoot. Can see why you're doing so, but yeah, maybe think about looking at redistributing there, especially with 2x£4ms.

If Thomas Lemar does join Arsenal they will have a serious team, can see them definitely challenging for title:

    Cech
    Mustafi - Koscielny - Monreal
    Bellerin/Ox - Lemar - Xhaka - Kolasinac
    Özil - Sanchez
    Lacazette

Be a bit of a waste signing a guy whose best position is LW and playing him CM.

Arsenal definitely need to start strongly for once, not done that for a few seasons.
Not too fussed about Lemar, and it doesn't sound likely to happen. I personally prefer -

      Cech
      Bellerin - Mertesacker - Koscielny
      Ox - Ramsey - Xhaka - Kolasinac
      Özil - Sanchez
      Lacazette

      But it probably won't happen.

Lemar is on the wing, so I'm not sure that is a serious look at how we'll line up 🙂

I think what you've highlighted, though, is where Lemar will fit. Can we still run the 5 at the back with Lemar also there? I wonder. If he does come, I think he's the long successor to Sanchez.

Tommy Smith anyone? 4 goals 10 assists from right back. £5.0 million. First five of: cpl, NEW, SOU, whu, LEI.

He was on my radar before launch - I was upset at his pricing. No promoted defender should ever by £5.0!

I suppose at £4.5 everyone would have had him.

Yet to feature in pre-season due to injury. Wouldn't pay 5m for a Huddersfield defender anyway.

At 5m it's too much - good fixtures but *newly promoted* right back is what makes me think Daniels or Dawson are better shouts

Worth checking out Suttner of Brighton instead - 4.5m.

Consistently attacking returns throughout his career and possibly on set-pieces too.

A few thoughts but, happy to here your responses:

      Jesus > Aguero for me.

Benteke didn't impress me enough last season to warrant £8m but, you never know.

      Willian > Fabregas

Cedric a risk to start season?

Southampton great fixtures & Yosh scored well for me at the end of last season.
3 Saints is a gamble but I think it's a solid pick for the first month.

Hi folks, any thoughts on this?

    Pickford (Begovic)
    Cedric Lindelof Trippier (Ake Rangel)
Phillips KDB Zaha Willian (van La Parra)
    Gayle Kane Lukaku

0.5 itb. I think I have good rotation in defence with Ake and Begovic but something aboutthe team just still seems a bit off to me. Any suggestions?

Too much spent on Keepers. No need for two 5+ keepers imo. Downgrade one and bolster your midfield.

Not bad but I know what you mean...

.5 to be used to upgrade Phillips or Willian maybe?

You can also downgrade Gayle to J Rod to save .5 and invest +1 in midfield

    Would anyone RTM? 🙂

    Foster (Myhill)
Trippier - Cedric - Lindelöf (Dunk, Lascelles)
Fabregas - Coutinho - Pogba - Ramsey (Tom Carroll)
    Kane - Lukaku - Deeney

Im unsure about several players. One thought is replacing Pogba (too many utd), but with who? What do you guys think? Appriciate it. Sorry bout bad english.

Willian over Fabregas, and maybe Lanzini over Pogba. Would give you funds to improve Deeney.

Good point. Pogba, Deeney => Lanzini, Defoe? Forgot noting I have 0,5ITB. I thougt Fab is on penalties and have a enourmous points/min last year, but Willians isnt fare off.

Deeney is missing the start of the season so I'd replace him with Gayle who has a run of favourable fixtures after GW1. Fabregas I'd get rid of for RLC meaning you could get KDB for Pogba and still have 0.5 ITB.

Off topic but does anyone with an Xbox account realise how easy it is to get banned? I've been a customer for nearly 10 years and never have I been banned but in the last 3 days I've been chat banned for two weeks and can't go online for two weeks, i dont know what I have done to get banned either which is the worst part.

Sorry for the rant, was a bit angry when I saw the emails lol

Go on live chat with them to find out the reason.

I've never been banned myself. At least it isn't permanent.

I'd be asking for a pro rata refund of my Xbox Live if they can't provide me with a decent reason.

Sanchez wont be playing in an arsenal shirt again..for his reps to tell the club he has the flu, well something is brewing. hes 29 in december, he will be thinking that he cant afford to play no champions league football for a whole season

Think Arsenal will stay resolute and keep Alexis this season, irrespective of whether he signs a new deal. It is World Cup year so he is not going to just down tools.
