Newcastle United completed their fifth summer signing with the addition of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Mikel Merino on a season-long loan.

The Spanish U21 international struggled for pitch-time after joining the German giants last summer, but Magpies boss Rafa Benitez believes Merino can thrive under his guidance over the coming campaign:

“Mikel is a midfielder with talent, an under-21 international for Spain. He’s a good size, has quality on the ball and he’s very, very focused and professional. Hopefully, he’s the kind of player we can improve a lot – he certainly has the mentality to get better and better. He has to show what he has, and hopefully, he can enjoy playing here for a long time.â€

The History

Merino began his youth career at Osasuna and made his debut for the reserve side during the 2013/14 season.

He broke into the first-team squad the following campaign, making 29 appearances and registering one goal and four assists in the Spanish second tier.

The midfielder enjoyed another strong season in 2015/16, producing seven goals and one assist in 38 league outings, as Osasuna gained promotion to La Liga via the play-offs.

Merino then signed a five-year deal with Dortmund, but featured in just eight league matches last term, making only two starts.

The 21-year-old has represented Spain at both U19 and U21 levels, scoring two goals in 19 matches, and was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in this summer’s UEFA U21 Championship.

The Prospects

While both of Merino’s starts for Dortmund came at centre-back, the Spaniard is predominantly a midfield player, capable of operating either as a deep-lying playmaker or as a box-to-box midfielder.

In his first interview for his new club, Merino offered his own perspective of what he can offer.

“I am a midfielder with a lot of potential. I like to help my team-mates always with the ball or without the ball. I always want to attack to have the ball and score goals and to help the team to go forward. This is always my main mentality, but of course, we know that defence is a really important part of the game.”

At six foot two, Merino is strong in the air (he won over 60% of his aerial duels throughout his career at Osasuna and with the Spanish youth sides), while – as you’d expect from a Spanish midfielder – he’s very comfortable in possession, which does make him an option on the left of a three-man defence if Benitez operates with wing-backs.

Merino can spray both short and long passes with a high degree of accuracy from his trusted left foot, while he is also renowned for his work rate in the middle of the park.

The Spaniard is not blessed with a huge amount of pace, though, and he may take time to adjust to the physical nature of English football.

He did win 18 of his 19 attempted tackles last season, suggesting he’ll bring some combativeness to the Magpies’ midfield

His arrival will certainly boost the options available to Benitez.

The Newcastle manager generally favoured Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey as the central midfield pairing in his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation last term, with Jack Colback the main alternative.

Shelvey was instrumental in Newcastle’s title-winning season and, having been named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, should remain relatively immune to his manager’s tinkering.

Merino is expected to ultimately claim a regular role at the expense of Hayden, with his ability to read the game offering protection in front of the back four.

Given that Merino may offer limited attacking threat in that role, he could come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League, with a chance he may be priced at 5.0.

In the Sky Sports game, he sets you back 7.3 to Shelvey’s 8.2, though Matt Ritchie looks better value at 8.3.

Newcastle have been handed a favourable start to the season, with five promising fixtures (hud WHM swa STO bha) following the testing opening home clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The addition of Merino will certainly provide much-needed strength in depth in central midfield, with his quality on the ball and energy likely to mean that he gets plenty of minutes.

But given that he is still in the early stages of his development, and has missed much of Newcastle’s pre-season, it’s perhaps later in the season when he is more likely to assert himself at St James’ Park.

He will likely have little impact on our preferred Magpie midfielder – the aforementioned Ritchie – who could offer strong initial value via his set-piece and penalty duties. Priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Scot returned from injury to feature for 45 minutes in the midweek win over Bradford.

I was debating removing but decided to remove replies and lock. Maybe I made error not removing so I'll sort. I didn't want a long thread dedicated to feedback on a specific user on the front page of a new article. Nobody is being protected. I plan to deal with it offline because we don't need attention seeking posts like that on a Friday evening when there are better things to discuss. Clearing up this thread too.

So much this. I find it very hard to not play the fixtures. Has caused me to miss out on a lot of points from form players in the last two seasons.

Yep also fall into aggero comment below. I think going fixtures bias can help get a regular top 50k put to get a top 10k form bias is better but risky you could end up chasing points

Haha. I don't think I've seen you post!

I think I Cedric is a big risk seeing as he's yet to feature in pre-season and player who come back late from international tournaments do seem to miss GW1..

Salah, Mane, Coutinho and Firmino are all at risk of rotation in the first 2 GW's because Liverpool have 2 important CL qualifiers.. if the 1st leg is a difficult result then expect maybe all 4 to lose minutes in GW2..

Then Austin is a good punt, I'm on him but Gabbiadini is pushing him for a place, and if Redmond features upfront again then Austin is at risk..

There is one problem with rotation - often player that you benched outscores the one that was your main choice - sods law.
Create strong first 11 and stick to it, make your bench as cheap as possible with secure 2 points delivered every week.

I'm serious. The game is skewed towards the midfielder.

I'm scientifically proven that £6m to £7m defenders outscore midfielders in the same price bracket, but I can't bring myself to load up in defence.

Not sure myself yet. Will probably use it for a DGW when half my squad haven't got a game or something.

A good time could be after the first international break ... you might have a nice team you want to keep together but knackered players and bad fixtures

It going to be brilliant, being able to draft in a whole new team for the next round of fixtures and then get my old team back afterwards

That is how it works isn't it?

    6. Skalla
      • 9 Years

I don't think the best use will be for a blank week as those will be low scoring anyway. Planning to use it in a SGW later in the season where the big teams all have good fixtures and you can fill the bench with the cheapest players available at the time, hopefully a few 3.8 defenders!

Oh the irony of typing a small essay about being frustrated when comments you write disappear, and then when you try to post, the 'We are experiencing problems saving your comment' shows up, and you lose your comment!

Sorry Mark, but luckily I copied my message before I lost it this time, and I don't want to have wasted my time:

Hey Mark, thanks for the reply. I've had lots of posts deleted recently (and of course replies deleted as the result of the post being deleted)

I understand in the T&C that it says to be aware that different mods have different opinions, but I do feel they get an extra kick from clicking that delete button! 😀 Would be nice if everyone was a little less trigger-happy, since typing is such hard work for me, I don't want to do it for nothing! haha

This case is a little different, but you can see how it could become frustrating as a user, especially since it's an opaque, seemingly secretive system. Mods can claim no modding is happening whilst posts are disappearing left, right and centre! 🙂

Yep, I agree. I've tried to relax the filters to stop this happening and I think that's helped. But we probably need to go further.

The mods aren't deleting willy nilly. I certainly cleared up a couple of threads tonight though - as you know.

Drop me a mail if you can recall anything specific and I'll look into your cases specifically.

Genuine question, since I have zero experience in websiting! Is there a bin for deleted posts that you can use to evaluate what's been deleted in the past?

I really can't be bothered to pursue any particular case, since it seems petty and time-consuming, but it would be nice to know that mods are held accountable, and that they really can't delete things willy nilly in case we do pursue it 🙂

All comments are stored. Yes. But no mod is going to be "held to task". We'd chat about it and we'd apologise if there was a genuine issue but moderating is hard enough without me being a tyrant 😉

Hi please rate my team out of 10:

Foster, Monreal, Trippier, Cedric KdB, Eriksen, Willian, Milivojevic Kane, Lukaku, Chicharito
    (Elliott, T Caroll, Mee, Hunemeier)

    1. Will try rotate Mili with Mee and jump up for rising 4.5 def.
    2. Another idea is Monreal to 6.0 defender, but have no playing def in bench.
    3. Upgrade Chicharito with downgrade Eriksen??

    Would appreciate thoughts, thx you.

I don't like the KDB pick as I am convinced he is bad value. He hasn't shown himself as a prime (C) option and will never be with Jesus in the team.
However, the fixtures are good, if not outstanding, and he might just be worth it considering an early WC

willian is on a large number of set pieces and is likely to be chelseas key attacker whilst Hazard is injured. Ramsey flourished towards the end of last season when arsenal switched formation

Willian because Hazard is out, though he's back in training already.

Ramsey looks good. I give him a lot of shit but I can't deny he has stepped it up since the second half of last season and looks solid in pre season as well.

Really getting quite impatient for the season to start, if only as it means I can stop tinkering with my squad so much (or severely limit tinkering)

Anyway, landed on this at present, and, yes, I'm aware of the awful bench situation (Fletcher is off on loan, is that right?).

Any advice welcomed with open arms:

    DDG (Myhill)
    Alonso Kolasinac Cedric (Marriapa Hunenmeier)

Arsenal fan? Loading up on the new Arsenal players is a little too excessive for my taste! Your bench is extremely weak too and that is a consequence of the 3-5-2. With a 4-3-3 you could bring in a 6.5 striker like Austin, bench Carroll and it can be funded by downgrading DDG to a 4.5 GK like Foster and Kolasinac to a 5.5 defender (would say Bertrand but you already have Soton cover, maybe Trippier - who had a great PPG last season and picked up 5 assists though he barely played).
