Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.”

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.”

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

    Morning.

Pretty tame stuff from this pair.

Let’s look at West Ham with this morning’s HT.

We are perhaps likely to avoid them for the opening five Gameweeks but are we prepared to re-assess once the run of away fixtures pass?

Where do you see the priorities in Bilic’s squad?

Hernandez is perhaps the obvious target but that forces us into the three-man attack perhaps and, by Gameweek 6, there may well be stronger value in midfield.

Are we still enthusiastic about Lanzini or do we feel that Arnautovic will impact on returns?

Antonio out of the equation to begin with but can he justify the 0.5 extra over that pair?

While Hart is 4.5, do you think we will ever be in the position to seriously consider the Hammers defence?

Lots of questions. Doosra. We’re looking to you.

      Mornin' Mark 🙂

I think Cresswell is going completely under the radar at 5. Reid, too, to a certain extent.

I would also have Ayew in my team in a heartbeat if there wasn't a roulette-like choice in the West Ham midfield.

WHam and Everton moves could prove to be really rewarding after the first 5/6 games especially if some of their values have dropped.

West ham have had one of the better windows in my opinion, and despite uniteds big summer aswell, would anyone honestly be suprised if it finished 1-1 after all the times united dropped points last season?

I think West Ham have to still figure out what their best formation and players will be.
We might see some new faces on set peices.
Certainly a wait and watch for 3 gameweeks for me.

pretty confident to start with one of lanzini or Hernandez.

Away fixtures dont scare me considering we were just as good (or bad) on the road compared to home last season

I think we re-assess for sure, thats part of FPL looking at fixtures changes.

I must admit I'm not too interested in West Ham at the moment, too many what ifs with their new signings.

Hernandez is tempting at that price but I think people are remembering the United days too much. Its a wait and see for me

Hernandez is generously priced and the most appealing out of all the West Ham assets for me.

West Ham have that tasty fixture against Huddersfield in GW4 and I won't be touching West Ham until that week as like with Everton lots of new signings mean the club will have to gel and their opening fixtures dp not particularly attract me. I currently have my third striker on J Rod, WBA play Arsenal that week, so it would be a straight swap in terms of fixtures, would just have to source another 1.0 from somewhere - perhaps from a Man City/Liverpool player who play each other to avoid being overloaded in that game.

think this season is a number of players from w ham that are worthy, Hernandez and lanzini for me , lanzini will improve on last season points I am sure I'm looking at 140 plus providing stays I just free

Ayew points history looks good and will improve but he won't have any pens which is where he got some points at Swansea but could surprise, especially if another striker not signed , wait and seee on him

Lanzini/Ayew/Arni have nice potential. Wait for 2 gw and see which one to buy for Willian.

I have a feeling that west ham will start really slow, so I am steering well clear of any of their assets for now. Many players that have potential in their squad - Ayew, Lanzini, Arnautovic, Chicharito to name a few, but ultimately they spoils will be too spread out?

The consensus is we'll start the season playing 4231.

      Hart
      Zab Oggy Reid/Fonte Cress
      Obiang Kouyate
      Antonio Lanzini Arnie
      Chicharito

Noble and Ayew starting for the injured Kouyate and Antonio.

Ogbonna and Hart are steals at 4.5 - the former is our best defender.

Lanzini is clearly a brilliant player however he may be like Silva - assisting the assister.

A full year of Antonio at RW will get a good haul of points.

If we move to 352 (we were tighter with that last year) then Cress becomes a good option. However we were poor going forward in 352, which would affect the above 4.

Hart could be a season keeper after the first five games. Surely loads of save points and decent clean sheet chances. And he's saved 5/19 pens in Prem.

            Secret weapon.

Compared him Defoe and Stanislas and he came out top.

His goal conversion rate was no fluke.

If he keeps scoring in almost every game, I have no problem with him listed as a forward.

FFS covers every preseason game. No matter what. That's why it's the best FPL site.

Don't see how it could work if they cherrypicked which preseason games they wrote up.

Obviously I don’t agree. We’re covering every single pre-season friendly and providing notes on each match with line-ups. Not a lot we can do if there’s no goals or relevant incidents to report - we include the article as part of our blanket coverage.

I think you’ll struggle to find another site with such exhaustive pre-season coverage logging lineups, goals and assists.

Very similar to mine. I've gone for Bertrand over Cedric due to worry over game time, at least initially. Also Alli and Austin... course I have to downgrade Kane to Lacazette to afford, but I'm (just about) happy with Alli as spurs coverage.

Yes, expect big things from this 4.5 striker, Huddersfield's cheapest out of 4 forwards. Put him in for massive game time and huge goalfests.

I would argue that it is more worth to have the extra 1M to spend on other areas of your team, especially in the earlier weeks of the season. What do you think is a reasonable return on investment for 1M in MID or FWDs?

Annoying. I'd just convinced myself to drop De Gea for Foster.

Whilst the overall logic is solid, I'm not sure how valid it is for the first 7 weeks, as mentioned in the conclusion.

Firstly, most will be saving 1.0m, not 0.5m. Secondly, that difference in points over 7 weeks will be much smaller and hence the value not realised

Problem with rotating GKs is it is very hard to call often. I remember at the beginning of the season people making the wrong call when trying to rotate Heaton and Foster. People would bench Heaton for instance against the likes of United and he would storm it!

Also, through expensive GKs , your budget gets eaten elsewhere and you have to make compromises - e.g. play Pogba or Sane instead of Coutinho - putting more risk with punts in your side as opposed to the more assured assets.

The only way I will have rotating GKs is if we are lucky to have a 4.0 playing GK in the game, like we did with Grant, Jaku and Pickford last year - hopefully Rob Elliot!

What do you think about what the article says about DDG? 20 points per £0.5m sounds very tempting.

I can understand why people would pick DDG as Utd defensive cover, I had him last season for the doubles and he delivered for me too. Heaton was 1.0 million cheaper though and outscored him, so there is value to be found in cheaper GKs. Foster didn't have a great season last year and WBA do look a little shaky in defence which is causing jitters for some, however with the fixtures he seems the best option for me and I would prefer to use that extra money gained by having cheap GKs to invest elsewhere.

Just because you have rotating keepers it doesn't mean you have to rotate them every time. I had Foster & Heaton last season (4.5 +4.5) and left Heaton in most of the time and had a strong back up when needed.

TBH, with United's Mid being the same as last year.

Luka a direct replacement for Ibra, I've currently got 0 United and can see them doing exactly the same as last season unless they get a better midfield.

I still think Matic will come in and I think Perisic probably too. Rashford a year older.

A is better. Imo having that 7.0 in mid will give you more versatility going forward too. If Ince doesn't fire, you've probably only got Richie and Philips as good transfer options, and a price rise for either could stop that. 7.0 is a lot easier though, and you could even change formation to bring in a 6.5 striker.

Gundogan in the mix does cause even more confusion for who is likely to play. I think KDB is the most nailed out of all the City players however. I did start with Sane, but I think there is too much risk of rotation with the likes of Sterling to play him, plus KDB has a higher points ceiling.

Someone posted a 3rd striker 5th mid rotation combo involving Ayew(SWA) yesterday but I can't remember who the 5.5 midfielder was...
    Walters?

Puncheon anyone? Palace captaiin with indirect fks and cks but most importantly only 5.0.

1.0M saved compared to Ince for example could be invested in defence.

Not a bad shout for 4th/5th mid
Didn't realise he'd been made captain

      Possible option, but a risk.

If FDB continues with a 3-4-3, he could be playing very advanced, which would be nifty

Milivojevic over him for me, on pens and free kicks too I think

Based on pre season Mili is on pens and direct fks but Punch takes care rest of it.

But Punch is more likely to score/assist from open play imo.

As a fourth mid? Not a chance! 😀

If it's as a 5th mid I'd prefer Carroll. As a 4th I'd spare the 0.5m/1.0m as there are some great 5.5m and 6.0m mids kicking about. I don't even know if Punch will be fully nailed this season (speculation)

Why wouldn't club captain not being nailed? Who is better option in 5.5 price range? Like said that 1.0M difference between Punch and 6.0 mids is a lot.

Well just because you're club captain doesn't mean you're nailed, just ask Britton, Terry and Rooney 😛

But you're right he'll probably play most games. Walters is absolutely cracking value at 5.5m, the more you dig into that one the sweeter it looks. Fraser is also good if Stanislas is out

Walters is good oop option and might on pens aswell

    Tadic or Redmond, and why?

Redmond as a bit more suited to Pellegrino's usual tactics.

Tadic only if he looks in form

Redmond for lots of positive reasons and lack of trust in Tadic

RMT please...Top heavy but can easily do Morata + Phillips to KDB and JROD...however I strongly believe Chelsea will start very strongly despite the fixtures

    433 formation

    Hart/Foster
    Alonso, Trippier, Cedric, Daniels, Mee
    Coutinho, Willian, Phillips, RLC, Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Morata
