Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.”

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.”

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

You don't think they'll tighten up with the new formation? It was only last season in which we could consider their defence below par.

            • 16 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

They have tightened up but I still prefer 3 or 4 defences to theirs. Also, they're in the Europa league. I really don't like picking players (unless it's the top end nailed ones) from Europa League teams.

Will Hegazi and Mariappa start? You'd want at least one of them to.

      1. Davido989
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

It looks like Hegazi will for the start. If not, then I'll have to switch to a sure starter like Mee or Suttner.

I don't expect anything from Mariappa, just a 4m who I don't want to drop in price.

I get your Fabregas bias over Willian but I don't get it 😆

Fraser still a good punt if he plays. Loving Kompany. Hate that bench though, but you know me 🙂

      1. Davido989
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Give me Fabregas over Willian all day, Zaha is my fall back option 🙂

I really want Kompany from the off - a fit Kompany = lots of points. Hopefully I won't need the bench but I've always gone 4 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4 on the bench and it usually works out fine.

I'm rooting for you with the Fab pick and I can appreciate the gamble... I just think it's too big of a risk. His numbers last seasons are shockingly good for how little he played. I assume you are thinking that Matic is on his way out and Conte might not throw Bakayoko straight in so you'll get a few weeks outta Fab...close one imo

I have doubts over whether Austin is actually nailed on and it seems that most of the Southampton supporters around here aren't sure either. So that's a gamble also.

Other than that it looks pretty good. Scared money don't make money

      1. Davido989
        • 16 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

I read that Bakayoko will miss the first few weeks of the season, that's why I've gone with Fabregas. Looks like Conte has fallen out with Matic.

Agreed on Austin, I'm hoping another option in that price bracket becomes obvious..

People are worried about him not playing forward anymore, but if you look at the numbers, he was only slightly worse (21 goal pace) when not playing forward. Plus you have to think a finisher like Lacazette will only boost assist numbers.

      Depends entirely on the manager.

Palace had two halves of a season last year...one half they went on the attack and the other half they tried to defend.

Sadly most got Zaha when the attacking was over after that mad Swansea game and ended up with a good attacking mid who spent too much time defending. He was quite good at that actually as well...unlike the others.

      1. the vanisher
        • 9 Years

Im considering de Boer as an attacking manager. And either in his 433 or 343 Zaha will be more an attacker than a midfielder.

I like Salah as a player and i currently have him, however im thinking of swtiching to Zaha sinceLiverpool attackers share the points an there is 2.0 difference which may be invested somewhere else

Based on the last few seasons, then surely playing 3-5-2 makes most sense? All the points seem to be in midfield....

Kane, Lukaku, Aguero, Lacazette, Jesus, Morata. Yeah, all the points in midfield.

      Thanks!

      Foster
      Kolasinac - Bertrand - Trippier - Daniels
      KDB - Eriksen - Phillips
      Kane - Lukaku - Austin

      Myhill - Mee - Carroll - Romeu

      Return the favour. 🙂

Personaly think Kompany is a better pick than Kolasinac but the rest looks really good for a 433. Have you considered what you're going to do in case you need to get an extra mid in?

        1. UnitedFan
          • 11 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

I'd probably downgrade Austin and go 442 if I needed to. Or upgrade Phillips with cash olif I want a stronger 3rd mid. Phillips can also be a placeholder for any bandwagon that emerges.

    10. H-SF
      • 10 Years

      Begovic Elliot
      Trippier Yoshida Hegazi Dunk 4.0
De Bruyne Fabregas Zaha Coutinho Carroll
      Kane Lukaku Austin

would you downgrade De Bruyne to Sane to enable a better defence, or downgrade one of the 7m mids to a 5.5m mid to upgrade defence. Or any other idea. Or just leave it as it is.

      1. Davido989

I think you can get away with that defence if Hegazi plays. Rest looks good.
