Marko Arnautovic gets his first minutes for West Ham in a defeat in Germany, while Leicester City’s drab pre-season continues with a goalless encounter at Milton Keynes.

Here are the notes from a low-key Friday.

Werder Bremen 1 West Ham United 0

Marko Arnautovic made his West Ham debut in a narrow loss to a German outfit they will face again today to conclude a two-legged Betway Cup affair.

The summer signing, fit again after a knee injury, played the final 30 minutes against Bremen and showed flashes of attacking threat from his position on the left-hand side of a front three.

Coach Slaven Bilic named a youthful starting XI, with six players aged no more than 21, while all seven of the substitutes he used are expected to start the second leg today.

Another likely to be given pitch-time will be Joe Hart. His rival for the keeper’s jersey, Adrian, played the full 90 minutes on Friday and distinguished himself with a fine double save in the second half.

Club captain Mark Noble lasted just over half an hour of the match before sustaining an ankle injury, while new signing Javier Hernandez played no part at all despite joining up with his new side’s training camp in Germany.

Bilic will hope the Mexican striker gets up to speed quickly as West Ham are currently desperately short of forward options following the sale of Ashley Fletcher, owned by 5.7% of Fantasy Premier League managers, to Middlesbrough.

The coach did, however, give an injury update on key attacking players Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio, who was used as a makeshift striker by the Croatian for some of last season.

“He (Antonio) is ahead of the plan. The plan is for him to miss the first game of the season. Andy is still not able to train with the team. I am frustrated he cannot play, now he is still injured and it is a big loss for us.”

West Ham XI: Adrian; Burke (Arnautovic, 60), Byram (Zabaleta, 60), Collins (Fonte, 60), Cresswell (Masuaku, 60); Cullen (Fernandes, 60), Holland (Snodgrass, 60), Makasi, Martinez (Ayew, 60), Noble (Obiang, 34), Rice.

MK Dons 0 Leicester City 0

Leicester City continued to underwhelm in front of goal with another toothless pre-season performance.

Having sneaked past Luton 1-0 in midweek, Craig Shakespeare’s men went one worse against MK Dons, although his side was picked with another friendly, at Wolves today, very much in mind.

Shakespeare trialled a 4-3-3 formation at Milton Keynes, welcoming back Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell from extended breaks after their summer involvement with the England U21 side.

“We played a 4-3-3 with three midfielders. We tried to play with a sitter if you like and play through the centre. Matty James swapped with Vicente [Iborra] at half-time to get his fitness levels up.”

Summer signing Iborra again impressed in midfield, but fluffed a chance when put through during his spell playing in a more advanced position after the interval.

Gray has been tipped as a potential break-out player this season should Riyad Mahrez, as expected, leave the club, and he and Tom Lawrence played either side of Leonardo Ulloa up front for the Foxes.

Full-back Daniel Amartey was used at centre-half by Shakespeare, who chose to keep another new signing, keeper Eldin Jakupovic, on the bench as he made no substitutions during the match.

An entirely different City squad, including the majority of their more established stars, will head to Molineux to face Wolves this afternoon.

Leicester City XI: Hamer; Johnson, Benalouane, Amartey, Chilwell; Iborra, King, James; Lawrence, Gray, Ulloa.
Subs not used: Jakupovic, Elder, Ndukwu, Musa.

Lightweight midfield and hopeless Gayle upfront.

Look for the cheapest way into a D to upgrade milfs.

      I like it - it's a very good side.

The issue, perhaps, is whether it would be better to accommodate another big scoring mid (i.e a Liverpool option) by downgrading Alonso, upgrading Zaha, and perhaps downgrading Bertrand to a 5.0 Southampton option.

I was set on other defensive optioins other than Southampton but then I saw their fixtures...wow! Probably for me Gayle is the biggest headache as I know nothing about him but picked him on the basis that he should play most games.

Indeed. Same as Sanchez, Rudiger and many many more. As i say i don't think competition is much so worst he misses 1st game. If there are then how many games do you expect him to miss? 1 maybe 2?

Agreed. Definitely think Pedro could start over Bats, but it's good that Conte is trialling two up front.

Based on this performance, I think it'll give us the answer.

Exciting, but we'll steer clear for a few weeks still.

Not even sure this is two up front, I think one of Morata/Bats will be playing from the wing and supporting a la Hazard. Morata supported Bats in the last game. I think Willian will start against Burnley but not sure after that how long he will survive.

Is midfield too weak with this team which is heavy on top but still 3-4-3 or 4-4-2?

    Forster
    Trippier Dawson Bertrand
    Redmond Willian Zaha Phillips
    Lukaku Jesus Kane

    Elliot Ake Carroll Dunk

      • 9 Years

You can get a better midfield with still 3 up top. Downgrade Dawson to a 4.0 IMO and start Ake. You should then go 433 and downgrade Phillips/Redmond/Zaha to a 5.0/4.5 such as Romeu or Milivojevic, and then upgrade a different midfielder to KDB/Alli/Cout.

Few players I'm considering, but unsure of things like game time, and generally what is expected of them...any opinions welcome on any of the below conundrums from those in the know, much appreciated,

    A. Lanzini or Chicharito the better option for West Ham?

    B. Cedric - seems to be in everyone's teams, but some saying he won't even start...anyone able to clarify this, is Yoshida a better option?

    C. Sane, obviously there will be rotation at City, but I think he'll play more often than not, again anyone with any opinion on this? Sterling, and Bernando Silva fighting it out with him I'm guessing?

    D. Sanchez, not seeing him in any teams, is this because of the transfer situation, or because he might not play GW1, I think he's only possible if you go without one of Kane or Lukaku

A - I’d normally favour Chicharito but we’ve yet to see him in pre-season and he will surely take time to ramp up. If you have to go West Ham from the start - which is debatable - I think I’d prefer Lanzini.

B - Yeah, doubts over Cedric for GW1 now with Pied perhaps in place to start having had a pre-season. We have to monitor Saints’ remaining summer fixtures.

C - I think Sane remains the best City midfield option if you can’t stretch to KDB or refuse to.

D - I think Sanchez is off limits for me until things are settled. Lord knows where his head is at or how Arsenal will play it if he stays. We need more time and behind the scenes developments before we rip up squads to get him in.

Agree. Will probs only be temporary before going to A.

Everyone saying 'get willian in because he's guaranteed starts while Pedro and Hazard are out' but that misses another point: will Chelsea not score significantly fewer goals without Pedro, Hazard and Costa?

Well Hazard is already training when he wasn't due to for another month so he will be back earlier, Pedro will be fine as he will wear a mask to play. Willian is great for the Burnley game but as soon as Hazard is back then i think he will be dropped. Pedro, Willian & Morata/Bats will score plenty of goals fear not.

Stanislas won't be fit for GW1, Howe said he's not fully recovered from surgery

Really good team. Quite similar to mine. I have a dilemma with Kane and am not sure he should be a first starter, especially considering his price.

He often stars seasons slow, he was leading scorer last year because he went through insane scoring patch in last few games (so form is sproadic im saying), plus Spurs basically playing all away games and pressing game is screwed by being at Wembley. I'm tempted, but leaning toward no Kane. It's a good team but I'd consider downsizing him and upgrading elsewhere (maybe with only one, luxury, player though in case Kane comes into form you can easily get him in)

        Thanks mate appreciated.

Get what you're saying about Kane. Kane - Jesus and then Daniels - Francis frees up enough ££ to upgrade Redmond - Coutinho. One to consider...

          Good thinking. My dilemmas are:

Stanislas and KdB vs Willian and Coutinho

          And

          Deeney vs Chicharito

      Good front 3. Check.
Cheap gks to free up funds. Check.
The D: some good attacking choices but Lindelof may not see much gametime going by his pre-season performances. I would look for a 4.0 to free up funds. Hun the Kun might be the man.

Milfs: Upgrade Ritchie and Redmond with spare funds if you can.

      Rating: 5/10

    Dilemma no.2:

    Deeney (+0.5m) vs Chicharito (-0.5m)

    Who's better value there?

Chicarito. Deeney is the size of a small bus

judging by the style of marco silvas stint at Hull Watford will be tight at the back but not very attacking, and West Ham failed to impress last year in terms of goals, Deeney has pk´s, Chica does´nt as far as i know, and my guess is that West Ham will be scoring a lot more so Chica for me. None of them for the opener though as i can´t see any of them scoring in GW1.

Rate these combinations in order of preference assuming players all are nailed:

    A) Mkhi & Austin (343)

    B) Phillips & Sane (352)

    C) Redmond & Defoe (343)

    D) Mkhi & Redmond (352)

    Last peice of the puzzle!
A lot depends on what happens in pre season and who looks to be nailed but honestly I like all of these options but I would prefer A the most.
