The second season of the official Fantasy Bundesliga game is here and is available in both English and German.

The first season was a lot of fun and we had a few Fantasy Football Scout regulars posters playing but no official league. This season I hope we can step up the community’s involvement and have created a FFS League (Password – FFS).

The concept and rules are very different to the Fantasy Premier League game, so if you are interested in playing I would recommend having a proper look-through. Statistics are a big part of the game so it suits the keen Fantasy player well.

The season will run from 18th August to 12th May over 34 gameweeks. The first deadline is kick off of the opening game on Friday night, August 18th 19:30 UK time.

Rules and Scoring points

-150 million budget to pick 15 players
-No limit on how many players you can have from one team.
-Three transfers between gameweeks. When planning your transfers try to make sure you have as many different kick-off times over a gameweek covered to maximize points potential.
-There are set wildcard weeks (we are not told exactly when) which were last year one of the international breaks in the autumn and the winter break.
-The transfer market is locked when the gameweek starts and opens again after the round is completed with player prices adjusted according to player performance.
-Captaincy has been replaced this year by a star player system. You pick one star forward, midfielder and defender who score 1,5x points.
-Manual substitutions during the gameweek (like in UEFA-games)
-You can replace a player in your starting xi with someone who is yet to play but you lose the points you sub out. You can also change your star player until you are happy with your score or run out of players in that position.
-Multiple ways of scoring points, not just goals, assists and clean sheets.
-If you want to do well in the game you need to understand the importance of duels won. See more here and here.

Selecting your squad

When picking your team you need to decide whether you are putting your budget to your starting xi or utilizing manual subs with more width. All of last year’s bargains have been bumped up in price so we need new ones and they usually introduce themselves when the season gets going, not before. This is why it may be smart to start with 12-13 strong starters and a couple of one million priced bench fodders.

Goalkeepers

Most important thing when picking goalies is that they keep a clean sheet as that gives you five points and every goal conceded loses one point. As every shot saved earns you a point save machines can also be beneficial, however, you want to avoid a scenario where your keeper’s team loses big and you are quickly looking at minus points.

Bayern’s Manuel Neuer (15m) is the most expensive keeper and (depending on his fitness) many will favor him and a fodder for reliable points. Good mid-priced keepers include Oliver Baumann (12m, Hoffenheim) and Rune Jarstein (11m, Hertha). Cheapest rotation pairs set you back 13-15m but for this to work your keepers need to play at different times and this is not the case in GW1 (Hannover/Mainz/HSV/Werder).

Defenders

You want defenders who win a lot of duels consistently every week. That way you have a solid base score even if your defender concedes or doesn’t get any attacking returns. Initially, you might look at someone like David Alaba (13m, Bayern) as one of the best defenders to pick, but even though he got four goals, four assists and a good amount of clean sheets last season, he wasn’t actually as good of a pick as on paper. That is because he didn’t earn many duel points.

Tried and trusted premium defender targets include Willi Orban (14m, RB), Benjamin Hübner (14m, Hoffenheim) and Werder’s very attacking wingback Theodor Gebre Selassie (13m). For a bit cheaper you could be looking at “Augsburg’s Roberto Carlos” Konstantinos Stafylidis (12m), Freiburg’s Caglar Söyüncü (11m) and a cheaper alternative to other Köln defenders Lukas Klünter (9m). Luca Caldirola (Werder, 5m) looks like the best cheap option right now, but when first team players get injured other names will come in to play too.

Midfielders

With midfielders, you are looking at wingers and attacking mids who are able to score and assist goals. In this game, you can also target box-to-box mids who are good going forward and do their defensive duties picking up a handful of duel points in the process.

There are several intriguing premium midfielders. Liverpool target Naby Keita (15m, RB) who bosses the midfield, Bayern duo Thiago (15m) and Arjen Robben (14m), not forgetting BVB’s tricky winger Ousmane Dembele (14m). Going down to 13m you find two set-piece takers in Vincenzo Grifo (M’gladbach) and Werder’s captain Zlatko Junuzovic.

At 11m there is a potential out of position player in Werder’s Fin Bartels, who finished last season strongly playing as a striker. For 10m you can invest in Köln’s Marcel Risse, who did well last season before suffering a knee injury.

Yevhen Konoplyanka (7m, Schalke) has suffered a big price drop because he was out of favor with S04’s previous manager but could emerge as a budget pick with a new man in charge.

Forwards

Goals are expected from your forwards, but also keep in mind that a striker winning regularly 15+ duels in a game will outscore a striker who scores a single goal but doesn’t do much else.

Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski (15m) is the only essential player in the game. BVB’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (15m) is close to that, but the lack of duel points last season means he just falls short. He is still, of course, an excellent pick and second name in most team sheets. With that being the case it mainly comes down to the third man in our forward line.

This third slot could be the one where you really play the fixtures. Almost everyone priced at 13m+ is a good pick with a few unknowns in the mix.

At 11m Nils Petersen (Freiburg) and Guido Burgstaller (Schalke) offer two solid cheaper alternatives. 19-year old Kaylen Hinds (5m, Wolfsburg) came from Arsenal this summer and has done well in pre-season, but it remains to be seen if he or any other cheap option can provide a bargain for our forward lines.

Additional Information

The week before the season starts all teams will be playing in the DFB-Pokal, German Cup, which gives a good indication into the starting lineups.

There is a learning curve to this game with a lot of stats based scoring rules so even if it initially might look hard, after a few weeks you’ll start to get the hang of it.

The game also hasn’t done any favors to new players by not including last seasons statistics. I don’t have much saved but will try to help from memory if there are any questions.

Any punts for this week? Teams most likely to keep clean sheets by betting odds:

    Dortmund 46%
    Wolfsburg-Gladbach-Schalke 43%
    Leipzig-Bayern-Hertha 41%

Yeah those clean sheet odds are super helpful, for goalkeeper selection especially.

    I've pretty much settled on:

    Aubameyang*, Lewandowski (Ibisevic)
    Pulisic*, Sahin, Caiuby, Ribery (Robben)
    Upamecano*, Bartra, Willems, Opare (Rafinha)
    Burki (Langer)

Some fitness/start question-marks between Robben, Ribery, Opare and Caiuby, but Augsburg's manager sounded very pessimistic about Framberger's availability, not so much about Caiuby's, and I'm guessing Bayern go with their A-team against Hoffenheim. Should have enough decent subs to switch things around if necessary though. Also wish I could have snuck a Wolfsburg guy in because their match this week and upcoming schedule is so great, but don't think I'll manage to this time--Origi's too much of a doubt for this week, and Gomez is too expensive.

After seeing that Alaba's likely to already be back next week I switched some stuff around:

      Auba*, Gomez (Lewa)
      Pulisic*, Sahin, Caiuby, Ribery (Robben)
      Upamecano*, Bartra, Willems, Oczipka (1m)
      Casteels (1m)

My team at the moment going into gameweek 4:

    Burki (Weidenfeller)
    Ginter / Willems / Felipe / *Orban (1 mil)
Caiuby / Sahin / *Bellerabi (Ribery, Konoplyanka)
    Lewandowski / Aubameyang / *Hahn

Weidenfeller as my backup goalkeeper for Burki, so I'm guaranteed a playing Dortmund defender with Dortmund's handful of important games coming up.

Ginter is nailed. Fixtures look good for Gladbach, including this one. Willems may be clashing with Ginter, but with his duel points won so far, he should get a decent score.
Felipe also nailed. Hannover have defended stoutly so far, despite conceding a number of shots. Wolfsburg's only goal this season has come from a counter attack after being peppered with chances by Frankfurt. Origi and Gomez are also doubts for the game.
Unsure about Orban, since Liepzig play a few important games in the CL and the team could face rotation. Hamberg are in good form and will have a go against them tonight.

Caiuby is a slight doubt, but with a good fixture this week and duel points turned out so far, could be a very profitable option.
Sahin is in great form, and Dortmund may save Weigl for the Champions League game against Tottenham on Wednesday.
So far, Bellerabi was won a lot of duel points, goal attempts and scored a goal in his last game. Mainz away looks to be a good fixture as well. He is my Star Player, as a result.

Lewandowski and Aubamayang should play most, if not all games for this month. Bayern and Dortmund are also somewhat short in this position.
Hahn scored in his last game and has won many duel points. Wood is probably the better Hamberg option, but I prefer Hahn's ball playing style more and he should create chances. Even though he is playing as a right midfielder.

I'm expecting Ribery and Konoplyanka to have good games as well. Wouldn't be surprised if I brought them on later.

    Suggestions are welcomed. 🙂

I don't see anything major wrong with either of your lineups. One thing to note for Kos is that Weidenfeller loses 0.1m in value after every game he doesn't play and I would be surprised if Bürki is rotated.

Shaq brought up the formation switch which wasn't possible last year. A bit of experimenting on the lineup page and it looks like to me that it's not the player furthest right that drops out, but it's the cheapest player on the position.

Third striker option seems to be the main headache for me.

Yeah you're right, cheapest player drops out. I'm also having difficulty figuring out with my third striker. Between Ibisevic and Haller now--Ibisevic has a slightly better matchup this week but Haller has the advantage over the next few, and I prefer his supporting cast.

Underwhelming week in my case. 91 points.

Leverkusen and Gladbach lost. All three strikers flopped.
No goals or assists throughout. Players I mentioned underperformed.
Had it not been for a valiant defensive performance, it could've been a lot worse than it looked.

Shows what I know. Thinking of transferring out Ribery now. Mainz, Frieburg and Wolfsburg don't look that important for him to play in for the next five, given Bayern's Champions League and away games in the league.

I'll wait until Thursday to make any other decisions.

Yeah, a very bizarre week. 102p and a nice rank jump but still not completely satisfied.

Ancelotti's decision to rest(?) Ribery and Robben in one of the toughest games of the season ahead of Anderlecht and Mainz home games looked absurd on paper and turned out like that too. Knowing how tough an away game Hoffenheim is I skipped both but alternatives didn't really deliver either.
Injuries to Gomez and Bartra in the first half left a bitter taste. Keita also got injured at the end of the game, will need to wait for a diagnosis.

Same with Bartra for me. Would have used some CS points.

It's a bit of an underwhelming week for me also as I got 52 points from the first match and 47 from the rest.

Just read that Schmelzer is out for 6 weeks. Surely makes Zagadou an excellent option again, right?

Too bad. He has been excellent value in the first two GWs for me.

Does Tisserand have an injury or is he dropped? You said that he was doubtful but I saw him projected to start on LigaInsider so took my chances with him but he didn't play.

Ligainsider seems to put most players who are a doubt still in the lineup, they just have the "injured" sign next to them. Wolfsburg posted their matchday squad on twitter on Friday night and he missed out through injury. That was actually an hour before the deadline but I didn't catch it at the time either.

Need to wait and see on manager quotes about Toljan and Zagadou. Germans tend to be a bit more open in their press conferences about selections so could get some hints on that.

I see lots of peeps looking to get Davies in, but I'd be worried by threat of rotation with Rose when he's back, especially with Champions League about to kick off...anyonelse worried about that? How imminent is Rose's return?

Yeah I had both Ribery and Robben in there, won't make that mistake again. Somehow salvaged 96 points--my Frankfurt guys Willems and Haller really came through, plus a great performance from Opare.

Might be better resources for this purpose out there (I'm all ears if so) but I've found 538's Bundesliga projections and rankings quite useful: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/bundesliga/. They project every single match of the season, and rate each team's defense and offense. The expected goals data for previous matches is also useful--gives you a sense of which teams are doing a good job of creating and preventing chances that goes beyond comparing goals or shot numbers.

Decided to review the Champions League teams' starting lineups, and possible changes to the teams for their upcoming Bundesliga games.

    {Bayern Munich} vs Anderlecht:
    Neuer
    Rafinha, Hummels, Martinez, Kimmich
    Tolisso, Thiago
    Ribery, Rodriguez, Robben
    Lewandowski

Possible changes for the game against Mainz (H):
Boateng came on late as a substitute, assisting Kimmich's third goal. He could start in place of Martinez, though is unlikely in my opinion.
Vidal and Rudy should start against Mainz, and could revert back to a 4-3-3 that started against Hoffenheim, meaning Thiago could be rested for Schalke on Tuesday.
Muller is very likely to start, with Robben and Rodriguez dropping to the bench. Coman has the youth factor over Ribery, and could start over him for similar reasons as Thiago. Lewandowski should continue up front.

    Tottenham vs {Borussia Dortmund}:
    Burki
    Piszczek, Sokratis, Toprak, Toijan
    Dahoud, Sahin, Kagawa
    Yarmelenko, Aubamayang, Pulisic

Possible changes for the game against Koln (H):
Bartra suffered a minor groin strain last Saturday, and I wouldn't be surprised if he returned to the starting lineup in place of Toprak.
Zagadou, Gotze and Castro made substitute appearances for BVB, and should start on Sunday in place of Toijan, Kagawa and Dahoud due to Dortmund's list of injuries and many games coming up. Julian Weigl travelled to London as well, and he could be in starting contention on Sunday, putting Sahin at risk.
Out of Phillip, Pulisic and Yermelenko: the former looks the more likely to start on Sunday having being rested, with one of the other two wingers dropping to the bench.

    {RB Leipzig} vs Monoco:
    Gulacsi
    Klosterman, Orban, Upamecano, Halstenburg
    Sabitzer, Demme, Ilsanker, Forsburg
    Poulsen, Werner

Possible changes for the game against Monchengladbach (H):
Difficult to say, since their squad is smaller and more unknown to us.
With Keita possibly ruled out for next week, Demme and Ilsanker should continue in centre mid, with Poulsen possibly dropping out for Augustin. It could well be a similar team on Saturday to this lineup.

Will do one for Hoffenheim, Hertha Berlin and Koln tomorrow as well.

Thanks for this. Has there been much news on Keita lately? I'd been considering bringing him in for this week, but might be safer to hold off till next gameday. And I'd be surprised if Zagadou started over Toljan this week--Toljan's start vs. Spurs seems like an indication that they already trust him at left back. Toljan's transfer fee also wasn't inconsiderable, and left back isn't Zagadou's primary position.

Also, given how productive Sahin has been, is it at all possible that Castro is the odd man out once Weigl returns?

        1. Still Playing. Just Kos
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

That's true, but given how well Zagadou did at Left Back, and the handful of fixtures, I don't expect Toijan to start every game until Schmelzer returns.

Sahin, similar reasons as Zaga, could retain his place for this weekend certainly.
However, statistically speaking, Castro has also been more productive than we might think. His passing stats for this season look great, and Sahin's form won't last forever.
          https://www.whoscored.com/Players/13423/Show/Gonzalo-Castro

So for this weekend, Sahin and Toijan have a good chance to retain their places, but won't get the Lion's share of game time in the long run, personally.

Now for the Europa League team's starting lineups, and possible changes for their upcoming Bundesliga games.

    {Hoffenheim} vs Braga:
    Baumann
    Nordtveit, Vogt, Bicakcic
    Grillitsch
    Kaderabek, Demirbay, Rupp, Schulz
    Wagner, Krameric

Possible changes for the game against H Berlin (H):
Zuber, Amiri and Hubner look likely to return on Sunday, with Schulz, Rupp and Vogt most likely to make way.
Uth also could earn a starting place if Narglsmen decides to revert back to a 3-4-3, with Grillitsch likely to make way for that to happen.
Let's not forget that brace against Bayern Munich last Saturday.

    Arsenal vs {Koln}:
    Horn
    Klutner, Mere, Heintz, Rausch
    Lehmann
    Zoller, Hoger, Hector, Bittencourt
    Cordoba

Possible changes for the game against Borussia Dortmund (a):
Hector picked up an early injury and limped off, which leaves an anxious wait for his scan between now and Friday evening.
Frederik Sörensen could return in place of Mere on Sunday. If Hector is injured for the match, Rausch looks likely to continue at left back.
Risse could come in for Zoller at right midfield. Osaka is also in contention, should they decide to revert to a 4-4-2 again he will most certainly start.

    {Hertha Berlin} vs Athletic Bilbao
    Kraft
    Pekarik, Langkamp, Rekik, Plattenhart
    Lustenburger, Darida
    Weiser, Duda, Kalou
    Ibisevic

Possible changes for the game against Hoffenheim (a):
Jarstein and Leckie look certain to return to the starting lineup replacing Kraft and Pekarik. Weiser should move to right back again.
Stark and Skjelbred could return to centre midfield in place of Lustenburg and Duda, with Darida moving back to the central attacking midfield position. Esswein could retain a place in the starting team. His versatility as a striker and left midfielder means Kalou possibly misses out.

I personally think Ribery and Robben won't play against Mainz (or Wolfsburg (H) for that matter). Playing three games apart can be tiring, and with games against Schalke (a), PSG away and Hertha Berlin (a) to come, those are tougher games in comparison which I think Anchelotti will save them for. Ribery is out my team for now.

Vidal hasn't played in the last two games, so I've gone for him. Not the best option, but I can't see him missing a third game in a row.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat--had been mulling over bringing Keita in, but I don't think I will anymore, really doubt he'll start. Also beginning

Since Robben and Ribery are kind of old and both just started vs. Anderlecht I'm inclined to think they won't start the next match, but who knows? As for other options, if you don't have Bellarabi in there yet he's got a good couple of fixtures lined up. I'm trying to decide between Marcel Sabitzer (great next few fixtures, but has played every minute of the season so far--not sure if that makes him a rotation candidate or an indispensable member of the team) and Amine Harit (less of a rotation concern, but worse upcoming fixtures) for my last midfield spot, in addition to Sahin, Pulisic, Bellarabi and Caiuby.

Just typical that when you get the unlimited transfers there are no injuries and week after there are three already. Bartra will go for either Hübner or Sokratis. Gomez to Haller. Keita sounds like a 50/50 so it's either Bayern lottery with probably Thiago/Vidal, Demirbay or Sabitzer.

"a) 1 game suspension after 5, 10, 15... yellow cards during the Bundesliga season.

    b) 1 game suspension after two yellow cards in the same match. Those yellow cards are not counted against rule a). So if a player starts the match with 4 yellow cards, gets booked, he misses the next match due to rule a). But if he receives a second yellow card, he misses the next match due to rule b) and restarts with 4 yellow cards in the match after that.

    c) 1 game up to x games suspension after a straight red card. Players who collect two straight red cards within the current season or the season before, get at an additional 1 game repeat offender suspension added on top, so at least 2 games.

Unless ruled otherwise due to special circumstances, suspensions only count for the same competition. So a player can be suspended for the next three Bundesliga matches but may start in the next cup game during such league suspension."

Violent conduct red card could be three games.

      We caught a break there.

Also, Caiuby got 11 points in just 22 minutes. What a monster.

I have to select two of Pulisic, Bellarabi and Nuri. I will see Bellarabi first, but if he gets more than 10 points I have to choose between Nuri and Pulisic. Neither of them is winning many duels, so I might go with Pulisic.

Also, feels like it's more important in this game to have defenders who win a lot of duels instead of the ones who keep clean sheets. Willems got 9 for me yesterday while Rafinha got 4. Clean sheet bonus is only 2 points.

On top of my defensive problems, Bellerabi the ONLY player in Bayer's midfield/forwards today not to be involved in goals...
Hopefully, Dortmund players can turn things around.

Pissed about making the wrong decision on Philipp vs. Sabitzer but: 137, up to 4th overall, mostly thanks to Sokratis, Kehrer and Caiuby (in addition to the obvious Lewandowski and Aubameyang).

Aubameyang (15p), Phillip (17p) and Burki (10p) saved my bacon this week; bringing me up to 126 points in total.

For transfers, replacing Felipe is a priority. It would be difficult though, as Zagadou and Opare (the only players around the same value) are not nailed.

Phillip, Vidal and Orban are all rotation risks, so one will have to stay in the team.

Weigl (12.7) could play most of Dortmund's games now that he's back, and could win a few duel points in that midfield too.
Ribery (14.2) should be rotated back in for the Wednesday game against Schalke, but may be rested against Wolfsburg subsequently.
Anton (10.5) is playing out of position in midfield (listed as a defender), and has started all of Hannover 96's game so far.

Would most likely keep Vidal out of the three, if I decide to go with these.

121 here. Sokratis really turned it to a decent week. Goalkeepers have been a real struggle for me again with only Ulreich getting some points the first week.

Orban is the captain so if there is no injury news I think he just had a rest. As an Upamecano owner, I'm expecting him to miss one game next week also. Weigl wasn't much value last year so that seems a bit much for a deep playmaker. Diminishes Sahin though as it looks like he has also lost left-footed set pieces to Yarmolenko.

Sahin plays a similar role to Weigl. He has accumulated many duel points, which has given him a decent turnout every week. Weigl also has the youth factor, which could see him as a secure starter. Until the Champions League group stage weeks are gone, he should start most games at least, and then Bosz might start some players every week with less games to play.

Orban hasn't convinced me on duel points. I can also see him starting every Champions League game, that could mean less league starts. Upamecano has been excellent for duel points for example.

Should be flexible though, with the transfer funds I've saved.

Orban was among the duel point leaders last season. I suppose the drop could be due to something that's likely to continue (teams going after Upamecano more, as the perceived weak link in the defense, or some kind of tactical shift from last year), but I'm not inclined to discount him as a duel-winner based on a few games of stats. Though I don't know, maybe a few games has more predictive value than I'm giving it.

Something like that probably. Orban did win a lot more duels in the first half of last season compared to the second half. He still has more goal threat than Upamecano but I switched on WC as I thought he would better value for money. Original comment to Kos was just about the rotation risk part.

Still, regarding Weigl, I would like some explosiveness for almost 13 million which he doesn't have compared to many other central midfielders.

*Disregard that explanation of Sahin's duel stats.

Would like to feel secure going into the next set of games in two days time.

I'm in a similar boat with needing to bring in a defender--I'm inclined to switch out Kehrer and Opare given their potentially disastrous upcoming fixtures (they're both home, at least, and members of decent-to-solid defensive units, but facing Bayern and Dortmund). Not a very sexy option, but I guess this would be one of a few weeks where it makes sense to bring in Philip Lienhart. 6m, 3 duel points per match, and home vs. Hannover 96's bad offense. Also will be keeping tabs on Marcel Tisserand's status.

121 here. Down to 12th overall but I'm happy.

Contributions of Pulisic and Sahin (fantasy wise) dropped off. Can keep Pulisic though, was rotated yesterday and should start against Hamburg, which is a good fixture imo. I can take Sahin out as I don't think he will start anyway. Gotta bank on that 0.7 profit.

I'll keep Caiuby for now. He can start on midweek as well. Does anybody know any reason on why he dropped to bench?

I'm not happy with Rafinha, so I'll probably swap him out. Doesn't get any duel points. Kehrer is good, but he's playing Bayern so I need to get him out as well. Next week his price will probably be lower so I can get him back.

Not expecting great points midweek, but we'll see. Depends on Zagadou and Bürki.

Hasenhüttl just said that Upamecano and Klostermann probably won't play against Augsburg.

I'll probably keep Oczipka then despite the fixture and get rid of Upamecano. I remember Kolasinac doing very well against Robben last season and racked up the duels when I got rid of him (away to Bayern that time).

First managerial change, Jonker sacked by Wolfsburg and Martin Schmidt expected to take over. Coached Mainz for 2,5 years, got them to Europe with a very good 15/16 season. Didn't do that well last season. One thing to note is that Yunus Malli was his main man at number 10 during his stint at Mainz before he was sold to Wolfsburg. Malli hasn't started a game yet but could become an option again. Also with Gomez out, he might be the penalty taker and get other set pieces too. One to monitor as they have a tougher run of fixtures coming.

Manuel Neuer suffered a new foot injury, he could need another surgery and be out for months according to Bild. Ulreich a bargain at 5.7 now, right?

    Made two transfers so far.

Will wait until the lineups for Schalke vs Bayern are announced, and switch out Vidal if he is not playing. Ribery or Sabitzer will be my likely replacements.

We will only get the first lineup Gladbach v Stuttgart.

Definitely getting Ulreich for tomorrow if I have the transfers, if not, then for Friday.

Sounds like Toljan won't make it on Wednesday so could look at Zagadou again too.
