Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

I've run the numbers and 532 could be just as competitive as any other formation. As with other formations that use all the players in a given position, you still need the flexibility to bench a player and switch formations if a player has an unfavourable match up. Im planning 5 at the back which will more often be 4 because someone always seems to get a tough away game. But if they're all at home against bad teams in playing all 5.

Finding goalkeepers tricky to decide on...

I've gone from Foster + Fabianski to Foster + Myhill to Heaton + Elliott to De Gea + Elliott and now back to Foster+Myhill...

A route into United defence is far from essential. A good reason to get DDG would be that he is good value.

Personally, I think he's not great value compared to the other GKs. It IS essential to cover the GK position (game rules), but not United defence, so I think you're comparing the wrong things.

A poor value GK is poor value, regardless of the value of Valencia.

Well i personally think united keep the most clean sheets (a hell of a lot more than foster) and id rather pay 5.5 for de gea than 6.0 for bailly

Fair enough with the first point, but then you compare Bailly's CSs to Foster's in the second part. The second part is flawed logic to me.

I would argue however that you don't know how many CSs United will keep, and Foster isn't the only other GK. Relying on CSs per million is a risk for me, and I'm also assuming that DDG's save points are relatively low.

I agree but I think going with a (pardon the pun) safe pair of hands to start with until I early wild card. Once have more info on which keepers are good value.. if a stand out 4.5 keeper emerges then it's an easy downgrade but with United's fixtures I think the extra mil is worth it to start with

    4. Goodnight Kiwi
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

Foster + Begovic here currently. Like having the ability to change between 4.5 keepers. Think both could be underpriced with their early fixtures

    5. Gilderoy Knockaert
      • 14 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

If Elliot can keep his starting spot I think he's a steal at 4.0m. Then it's just a case of finding someone who rotates well with him, for me that's Forster.

    6. Skalla
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 8 months ago

On DDG/Elliot atm, just think he is the safest pick in that United defense for now and DDG/Dawson should outscore Foster/Bailly for instance! Will be back to a 4.5 GK after 1st WC once we know the best option.

I want double United cover for those first 6 or 7 games and DDG means I don't have to guess who will be playing in defense. Pretty sure Bailly is nailed so i have him and switched out Valencia for DDG to free up some cash. Paired him Elliot

Firetog - what are your thoughts on pushing this to a 5-4-1?

      de Gea / Elliot
      Cedric / Bertrand / Trippier / Kola / Bellerin
      Eriksen / Pogba / Zaha / KDB
      Lukaku

Bench is Elliot, Ritchie, Ayew, Fletcher

KDB is basically the 2nd forward choice over Jesus / Aguero. WC somewhere in GW4-7.

I feel really good about this team.

    - Dawson and Mee will rotate for the 4th defender position as they match up well with seven successive home fixtures BOU, WBA, STO, CPL, WHM, HUD, WAT.

    - Nearly all players are nailed in their team as I'll try and save WC as long as possible.

    - I can easily bring in players early on if they start the season well with the budget set up.

    Fabianski
    Trippier / Bertrand / Daniels / Dawson
    DeBruyne / Coutinho / Willian / Zaha
    Kane / Lukaku

    Elliot / Carroll / Mee / Quaner

I have the same team with Yoshi + 4.0 instead of Bert + Mee to get me into United defence through DDG. Otherwise the same players. 442 really looks the best formation to start off this early. No problem with 3rd striker, no problem with having to count on RLC/TC to play every game...

    Thoughts on this?

    Forster (Elliot)

    Alonso Trippier Kolasnic Daniels (Mee)

    KDB Willian Redmond (Carroll RLC)

    Lukaku Kane(c) Austin

The starting 11 will be played week in week out with Mee coming in for Daniels if/when needed and depending on early season performances Carroll and RLC could come in too

4 (if he plays), 5, 2 (may do worse off attacking-wise at United though), 3, 1

Jaysus, only Puncheon would appeal even slightly out of those. I wouldn't even go near him either tbh.

One more attempt at changing up the team. Trying to go meta picks with one or two differentials. RMT please!

    DDG (Elliot)
Trippier - Yoshia - Ake (Hunemeier - Rangel)
Cout - Fabregas - KDB - Pogba (RLC)
    Lukaku - Jesus - Austin

Covered on everything but Spurs attack.. risky but maybe worth a shot given their recent form and playing at Wembley.

Daniels. Bombs forward like a demon. I know Ake has great bonus potential and goal threat but I just feel more comfortable picking the player that plays higher up the pitch. Both are great picks.

Saw a post here yesterday about the idea dropping lukaku if you have Kane in your team due to the lack of "ideal" captiancy opportunities for big Rom (vs. counterparts like Kane, Jesus) in the first 11 GWs or so.

I'm definitely giving it some thought but I'm a little bit worried about the lack of Utd coverage to start.

Which leads me to their midfield... anybody have any thoughts on Henrik Mhk at 8.0? His form seemed to pick up at the end of last season especially in the Europa League. is he a fairly safe pick to start with?

Also have to consider Pogba I guess with the addition of Matic, although I'm less bullish on him

Pogba would be my preferred pick over Mkhi at the moment as he's 100% nailed whereas there's a concern over Mkhi's minutes. However, assuming both are nailed, hypothetically, Mkhi would be the better pick.

Cheers. I'll consider Pog but it seems like all the casuals pick him up

haha meant to include in my previous post that I don't think that makes it a bad move, I could actually see it working out quite well this season. Especially considering he hit the post something like 6 times last season

I've dropped Lukaku yday, and retained Kane. Why do you need United coverage ? If you dropped Ibra last year would it have been sensible to insure you had United coverage ?

Go for a defender, or goalie, but as far as United midfielders go, there are better options.

Good point, that 8.0 price range is a weird one for me, as there don't seem to be many options there. I'm not as big on Zaha as some others are and already got Fábregas in my squad

Willian at 7m or sane at 8.5 are good options or just find the 1m for the likes of Coutinho.

I'm not planning for the first 11 GWs. In the short term I disagree with a lack of ideal captaincy opportunities for Lukaku. I think he's a front runner for the armband in 3 of the first 4 GWs.

He is nailed until Bakayoko is fit with Matic gone now so him and Willian looks good options for the first few GW's.

nailed for the first few GW's, also it's hard to pass up a starting Fabregas at 7.0...
