Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadlineâ€

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one†scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one†situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Coming Next…

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing player list articles, man of the match analysis and lots more to help guide you through to the season kick-off.

I'm a 3-4-3 man at heart but this year due to the coverage I want of the top teams and the player's positions it looks like I might even have to consider 5-3-2!!!
Not happy with how my 3-4-3 looked and the players in it, I'm toying with a halfway house compromise of 4-3-3 probably change it up between now and the big kick-off as still have other players to monitor...

Not sure on A or B:

    Team A
    Foster (Elliott)
    Trippier, Kolasinac, Yoshida, Pied (Hunemeier)
Zaha, Salah, Tadic (monitoring JWP and Redmond), (RLC) (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Jesus

    Team B
    Foster (Elliott)
    Trippier, Kolasinac, Yoshida, Pied (Hunemeier)
    Zaha, Salah, Willian, Tadic, (RLC)
    Lacazette, Lukaku, Jesus

Which do you prefer and why? Has anyone else thinking of leaving their beloved formation for another?

If you live in the UK, they used asbestos up to 1999. So even 1994 which is a relatively new build which you wouldnt suspect, could still have asbestos in it.

Probably, was used in 3000+ different uses . Like you have a metal sink in your kitchen, underneath it is black acoustic pad stuck to it, those used to contain asbestos same as vinyl floor tiles or paperbacking to vinly floor coverings. Those are pretty low risk products though due to the matrix in want the fibres are held (sticky, well bonded) - not to worry about

you need pretty large or repeated exposures though, like construction workers sawing through it with power tools etc would be the highest risk. There is an ambient level, everyone has breathed asbestos just not millions of fibres normally

by the time its diagnosed its normally to late and you have less than a year to live. It scars the lungs and can cause lung cancer.(symptons take 30-50 years to develop)

Anyone else dared to enter an early draft in a public league yet?

    Came out with this lot:

    Lloris - Heaton
    Valencia - Mendy - Luiz - Monreal - Milner
    KDB - Mkhi - Ritchie - Ayew - Groß
    Lacazette - Gabbiadini - Rodriguez

Feel free to share your own draft teams below

Very similar mids to mine...except Ayew...i can't see him being nailed?
Mendy and Valencia might be pricey rotation risks. I guess as is Milner?
I'm also starting to sway mire towards Jesus than Lacazette

Just to clarify this was using the new draft feature on the official site. I'd be made to have picked all those premium defenders. My thinking behind Ayew was his form for Swansea, his form towards the end of last season and the fact Bilic likes players who give work as hard as possible, especially in attack. Also think he will link up with Chica and Arnie very well this season.

          Azpi Kolasinac Valencia Bailly Trippier
          Mkhi Ritchie Fraser Ince Groß
          Jesus Lacazette Iheanacho

I wouldn't recommend looking at a total tally at the end of the season. I've done it before and it never works. You probably won't keep 1 player in your team all season. I am trying a new tactic to maximise your points for the next 3 GWs only.

True that Conor, TM (I think) has similar ideas and they are plausible. I am going to push that bar a bit further. Newcastle's next 10 contains only 3 tough match ups..

Yeah sure, I'm not saying completely ignore the next 10 fixtures. If they fixtures/form continue for a player then great, keep him. But the next 3 are the biggest priority.

Lacazette will most likely be on penalties given Santi's absence from the team and the fact he bagged so many for Lyon. Also the main striker whereas we expect Kun and Jesus to lower each other's points ceiling if they compete for starts and/or play together and share the spoils.

He has the best depth of squad in the whole league so unfortunately we'll never know the starting 11. Go for KDB, hope he gets injured after an amazing run and then transfer him out for Silva is my advice. Owning Jesus or Kun could be either amazing or a nightmare when one outscores/starts over the other.

Out of interest, why does everyone seem to be preferring KDB over Alli?

Alli is cheaper, scores more, less injury prone and less of a rotation risk. He's also improved each season and should continue that development this season.

Only way I could do that is to change Coutinho for Alli, but then I'd lose Liverpool coverage. Currently have Kane and KDB as I wanted City cover and didn't want to double up on Spurs, but reconsidering now.

KdB is the best City option. Alli is not the best Spurs option. City has better fixtures for the first 2 games. City looks to be improved. I'll consider a Spurs midfielder from GW3 if they are good.

KdB is a budget Sanchez/Hazard for me. I don't compare him to Alli/Ozil/Mane. I might captain KdB sometimes, I'm not captaining those guys.

Not bad, but not complete. Just monitoring a few situations like Coutinho and Cedric. Other than that it's pretty much done.

The tactic stays the same. Hitting that ownership sweet spot. I used the tactic partially last season and it worked a treat. Slow, but it worked no doubt. The 10+ weeks I didn't use it killed me and my OR which was a good lesson to learn.

I hope it is Morata for Chelsea as I will be bringing in Batshuyi double speed if Morata turns out to be shite.Hart will lose his England place this year. I don't think it will be Stones, I think it will be Jesus. If it is Rooney for Everton, I sincerely believe Waxys will kill himself.

How is it possible to know Pellegrino's preferred starters at this point? He probably doesn't even know them yet. Boufal is a factor. Gabbiadini can also play on the wing.

Worried about his vunerability to being subbed but he's in my team. Always rated him and reckon this season could finally be the one. Cracking dead ball delivery and he looked more hungry for a goal or two towards the end of last season.

look at last season. Nothing between them at the end in terms of points. The only semi-convincing argument I've heard is that Dele is still young and not at full potential, while Eriksen is as good now as he will ever get. But as I said-- semi-convincing at best.
