Sky Sports Fantasy Football makes a return as a regular on these pages this season and, as of this evening, our pre-season analysis of the game gets underway.

We start by plunging headfirst into the most dramatic change introduced for 2017/18. The Overhaul is a new feature that looks set to literally transform the way we approach the game.

Similar to the Fantasy Premier League wildcard, this allows us to completely revamp our squads on two occasions over the season. However, there is a key difference with the Sky Sports Overhaul, as it is restricted for use during two distinct one-week windows.

This alters the way we approach our entire initial squad selection.

Here’s why…

“The first Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 4 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 5. The second Overhaul period will be for the whole of Gameweek 28 and up until the first kick off of Gameweek 29. You will be able to make unlimited transfers during those periods until the first game day deadline”

With this in mind, it makes sense that our starting XI should focus solely on the opening three Gameweeks.

Following that, the international break affords us the opportunity to revisit our team, armed with three weeks of player form and data to help us rebuild.

Prior to the season kick-off on August 11, we will be basing our player list analysis articles around the “pre-overhaul” top targets, before revisiting each position to give a “post overhaul” view on line-ups.

Beyond our initial selection, the Overhaul also has far reaching implications on our transfer policy during the season.

Overhaul Tactics

The 40 transfers at our disposal can now be broken up and distributed over three distinct window periods.

  • The three-Gameweek period from August 11 until September 9, prior to the first Overhaul.
  • The 20-Gameweek period from September 9 until February 24, prior to the second Overhaul.
  • The 11-Gameweek period from February 24 onwards, after the second Overhaul.

Prior to the first Overhaul, it looks sensible to limit transfers to the bare minimum.

The best approach here is to pick an initial squad with good fixtures and with captains available for each match day – in our forthcoming articles, we will look to help guide you with this.

Of course, form, injuries and general misfortune could combine to play their part and derail that strategy.

However, our general rule with our intial selection should be to target assured starters or “nailed on” assets. This is always important but is made all the more paramount when you are essentially picking a team for the opening three Gameweeks.

Another viable tactic would be to use one or two transfers in a bid to get off to a flying start, covering all the major captains and looking for any “two for one” scenarios that the fixture schedule can offer us.

For example, by starting the season with an Arsenal asset for Friday night’s fixture at home to Leicester, then shipping them to acquire a Manchester City player for Saturday’s trip to Brighton, offers two possible captains and the extra player for a single transfer. It can also allow you to split your Arsenal/Man City budget in one team slot.

In terms of spending transfers, the Overhaul period two looks set to be the time frame where Sky Sports managers will use the bulk of their 40 trades.

This spell covers the vast majority of the season and the busy Christmas period while some of these weeks are essentially double Gameweeks.

In the past, experienced Sky Sports managers would use transfers on extra captain days and gain from “two for one” situations as best they could. However, the need to manage 40 transfers over the course of the campaign limited this tactic to rare occasions.

The Overhaul is set to shake this up, offering us the opportunity to be thriftier with our transfers.

Indeed, if we can select a solid XI and get our defence right after the first Overhaul, then extra captains and “two for ones” should take up the bulk of our future swaps, providing we can avoid being cursed by injuries and suspensions.

The second Overhaul arrives in the international break in Gameweek 28 – February 17.

Getting to that last Overhaul with around 10 transfers remaining – thus preparing for the fixture pile-up and inevitable rotation – should be a realistic goal.

Of course, with this being a new feature, it’s difficult to gauge the tactics and impact it can have on our seasons until we have first-hand experience.

If you have some alternative strategies on the use of Overhaul, then please let us know your views in the comments.

Coming Next…

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be providing player list articles, man of the match analysis and lots more to help guide you through to the season kick-off.

Also, I’ll be talking through the week’s action and upcoming plans with Fantasy Football Scout regulars Buffrey and Lewis on our regular podcast – the latest episode can be found here.

      Very likeable.

You have one of the better midfields seen around here.

You have the right personel on board and have obviously kept the fixtures in mind with previous form.

      The front three look ideal.

Thank you for your kind words 🙂
I have tried squads including Alonso or Kane (or both) but it really destroys the balance.
I know I may regret not having Kane or a premium defender, but (atm) I'm willing to take that risk, at least covering Kane with Eriksen.

Fair point, but take last season with a grain of salt. Chelsea going to have lots more fixtures with champions league and teams were starting to figure out their formation at the end there. This is tony pulis we're talking about, im quietly confident WBA going to be back on track.

Tinkering with the thought of early WC (week 5 or 6) and came up with this:

    DDG-Elliot
    Bertrand - Dawson - Trippier - Francis - 4.0m
    KDB - Coutinho - Willian - Zaha - Carroll
    Lukaku - Kane - 4.5m

Probably going either 442 or 352 depending on the fixtures. Tried to cover teams with good fixtures and potential high ownership bandwagons. Thoughts?

Yeah I thought about that actually. If I get an injury in def or mid i can simply switch the formation around (i trust carroll enough to start in the team at this point). If either Lukaku or Kane gets injured im sure half of FPL is screwed anyways lol

Personally not a fan of Zaha and I don't fancy Palace fixtures apart from the opener. I chose to go with Kolasinac over Zaha and run 4 at the back cause I couldn't find good value at 7.0 in midfield apart from Willian. I like the team otherwise.

It's good but you should downgrade defence and forwards a d upgrade mids

I don't see a lot of value in 6.5-7.5 mids atm. I would honestly rather have a premium wingback instead

Fair enough but you might want to get tried and tested PL defenders. Kolosanic and Trippier aren't though they have great potential. I have Yoshida, decent and a nice price.

Fair thought. Trippier was quality when he got to start last season and at 5.5 he is a bargain for the leagues best def last season. I was undecided between Kolasinac and Kompany but the former edged it as he is essentially a midfielder if Arsenal stick to 3 at the back.

Really not sold on Pogba yet. Him and Matic havent played a single minute yet, and Matic isnt even match fit. Wait and see before going all in

Cheers. It's on my mind as well. I can easily downgrade Mili to RLC, Austin to JRod and upgrade Pogba to Salah/Coutinho if Matic doesn't look like starting gw1

personal opinion, but if Austin doesnt start then I don't see any fwd below 7mil that will be worth it. might as well go with 2 fwd +4.5m and upgrade mid that has a ton of good options

I'm keeping an eye on Austin's likelihood of starting. Ideally I would have him if he starts and perhaps move to Chicharito gw3

The thing about Carroll is that he looks nailed. No 4.5m forward will get games. Mounie could also be worth a punt.

Depends on the formation you're gonna run. I'm on Kolasinac + 4.5 mid atm but if Phillips is fit for gw1 I might go with him

i have both ince and phillips + Mee at the moment...thinking of upgrading mee to Kola, and downgrade either Ince or Phillips...dillemma is that although Kola is going to be a wingback with good fixtures, both phillips and ince have good fixtures and have a decent preseason going on...also phillips was 4.3PPM last season...

      Foster / Elliot

      Kolasinac Trippier Bertrand (Hunemeier Rangel)

      Willian Salah Lallana Alli (Loftus)

      Jesus Lukaku Chich

Have been switching Lallana and Ramsey around! But think I'm going to stick with Lallana!

well since you have salah, you dont need lallana..think of someone who will give more points like a zaha etc...

I think Lallana will come out by the end of the Day! Just need to pick out either Ramsey, could even afford Pogba if I downgrade Kolasinic to Stones or Bertrand to Cedric. But think I'll go Ramsey / Zaha

Not sure Kolasinac is worth his price (yet).
If Cedric starts and looks fit vs Sevilla, downgrade Beertrand to him.
I've had Trippier but not sure I'll keep him.
Salah may face rotation around GW2 due to european matches.
I prefer Eriksen instead of Alli.
        Wait on Chicha.
Lallana not sure of playtime too, Ramsey still doesn't convince. I suggest Zaha.

Kolasinac is sort of my wildcard at the back! He had a good season last season and seems to be getting praised by Arsene. Also he seems to be playing as a wing back with 3 at the back, could have an Alonso season! But I have looked at alternatives (One being Walker, if I downgrade Lallana to Ramsey/Zaha). Klopp will start lallana as he's one of our very important players, Klopp loves the press and energy he provides.
I had cedric but I'm worried about initial security of starts!
Salah I'm not taking out, sorry! Lol
I like your thinking about Chica, but don't know who can come in for that price any tips?
Eriksen vs Alli is very interesting as Eriksen is on set pieces too!
