Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

i have Foster in goal and Daniels at the back..

Am i better off getting Dawson in for Daniels and choosing a different 4.5 keeper?

Stick imo. Daniels looks like a very good pick.
Bego is still competing for the no.1 spot with Boruc according to Howe (if you were looking at Bego/Dawson).

Alli Mane De Bruyne Willian Carroll
    Lukaku Kane (c)
    Bench: 4.5, 4.0, 4.0 4.0

Obviously, but the thing is that Cedric is still on holidays, so it doesn't guarantee that Pied will continue to start. But if he's likely to have his chance early to the season, the fixtures are kind and he's a good player, so who knows. For 4.5 that may be worth the risk.

Why do we spend money on reserve defenders? In my experience, my reserve defenders - when called upon - get me two points if I'm lucky, and usually one point. Why don't we just pick two throwaway 4.0 defenders, and three defenders who will probably play, but if they didn't it would only cost us probably two points. The benefit of this - we've got half-a-million+ to spend on our attack or midfield.

There is enough decent starting 4.5 defenders to make it worthwhile, so I normally go one 4.0 and then a 4.5 starting def for the bench just in case!

    3. @FPL_Chess
      9 years, 1 month ago

This probably only makes sense up to the first wildcard, when you're guessing on a 4.5 defender. I think that money could be spent elsewhere. After GW3 then you'll have a good idea of a 4.5 defender with an attacking contribution, and then OK - spend the money on a decent reserve.

A strong case for not completely financially neglecting your bench is that the second you pick up a couple of injuries or suspensions you have very little in the way of cover and have to start taking unnecessary hits. And then there's the fact it gives you more breathing space when acquiring the emerging 4.5m defenders.

        1. @FPL_Chess
          9 years, 1 month ago

...but how many injuries or suspensions are you going to have up to your first wildcard. I take your point about hits though. I generally make more hits than you can shake a stick at. Something I must stop doing!!

Just been tinkering with my team and I wanted to know everyone's opinion on the following:

I have seen numerous RMTs with Paul Pogba in and I just don't get it. He costs 8m and you are buying a defensive midfielder! I for one think that Zaha will score far more points than Pogba and he is a £1m less expensive.
I can see the argument to get a couple of Utd players in, with their great run of early fixtures but I would rather have a Lukaku/Rashford double up for 0.5m cheaper than Pogba/Lukaku. I think Rashford will outscore Pogba this season and by picking him up front you can have a strong defence and midfield.
I know what some people might say, having 2 Utd forwards is taking up a extra forward spot, but I am only looking at doing this for the first 4 to 5 fixtures. By doing this, gives you a stronger midfield and you are able to pick players who in my opinion will outscore Paul Pogba.

    Following team:
    Foster
    Daniels Yoshida Kolasiniac
KDB Alli Willian Zaha/Ramsey (not decided yet)
    Jesus Rashford Lukaku

Not a bad side I think, opinion most welcome.

The Pogba idea comes off the back of the fact they're signing Matic and he'll play further forward. I can see arguments from both sides, I have both Pogba and Zaha.

Not keen on the Rash/Kaku double, just because I'm not sure how much game time Rash will get. I'd swap him for someone like Defoe, Gayle or Hernandez.

      Nice team though.

    5. Skalla
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

Agree based on last season but the hope is that now with Matic joining Pogba will move to a more attacking position and match the likes of Coutino for 1mil less! Still a big punt though and Rashford could outscore him anyway!

    6. Shawcus
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 1 month ago

I just think that if people are willing to go for the Pogba/Lukaku combo then surely their thinking must be that Utd will score more goals than last season. I just think that Rashford/Lukaku will score you more points than Pogba/Lukaku and will cost you 0.5m cheaper. Just because one is a midfielder and one is a forward, it doesn't really matter when we are trying to build a strong first 11, its the amount of points that counts. Its like saying who would you rather have from Chelsea, Alonso or Willian. One is a defender and the other is a midfielder but its the you think will score you the most points that you'll get.

And FWIW I think that Rashford will be first choice this season either in a 3/5/2 or a 4/2/3/1. He'll get more assists than Pogba and will definitely score more goals than him.
