Swansea City are the next side to be assessed as part of our in-depth team-by-team analysis series for members.

We start by checking in on the team statistics in an attempt to spot trends or improvements over the past 12 months before we shift to analyse player data, as we attempt to narrow the field ahead of the new campaign.

Having been ensconced in the security of mid-table in 2015/16 – claiming 47 points to finish in twelfth position – the Swans were left floundering last season. With just three wins in the opening 19 Gameweeks of 2016/17, the Welsh outfit looked doomed at the midway point until the arrival of Paul Clement.

Appointed as successor to Francesco Guidolin, the new manager chalked up four victories in his first six fixtures to steer his side out of the drop zone. Swansea ultimately clinched fifteenth spot on 41 points – seven clear of relegation, scoring 45 goals.

How do people think City will line up for gameweek 1...will Pep play Aguero and Jesus...will Bernardo Silva start and if so, who will drop out?

      B. Silva won't start, he hasn't played preseason yet. Jesus will either partner Aguero or start ahead of him but I can't see him being dropped.

Nobody knows but went for Jesus and KDB as think they are the safest picks for GW 1 but with Pep they could be on the bench by GW 2 again...

Hmmm...I think they will both play...I fancy city to score a silly number of goals in that first match...Sane could weigh in with some goals too

They don't concede many goals, so last season it may have been unlucky that they didn't keep clean sheets.

They will defend well but based on pre-season and last season they seem to find a way to concede atleast one goal every game! So avoiding Foster for that reason but think Dawson is still a good option with his attacking returns.

They got 11 clean sheets the previous season and 16 the season before that. 6 was very low and they conceded 1 goal quite a few times. Fancy them to get at least a couple of cleanies from the first seven plus a goal or two each for Dawson and McCauley. Not a bad return at all for £5m. Their fixtures are much better than say bournemouth, Watford and stoke.

I had a substantial pre-season bet on them conceding less than 50 goals two years ago at odds of 3/1 after doing research on Pulis Teams. I won the bet by 2 goals.

Last year they were on similar figures but had such a good season they were safe before March time. Have a look how many clean-sheets they kept from March onwards (Hint: not many).

A Tony Pulis team is by far the best 4.5 budget offer whoever the nailed on player is. In this case, Foster.

It's funny how perceptions can take hold.

West Brom were amazing two years ago, but 6 clean sheets last season is terrible. Despite this, their fixtures and pricing is great, so I'm currently on foster and Dawson.

If you ignore that it's WBA and just look at the fixtures you would be interested.

Anyone north of the bottom 4 with a 4.5 keeper and people would be looking at rotation pairs

    17. McNulty
      • 16 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

Losing Fletcher must surely be a blow, he organised that midfield. With those fixtures it seems wise to get a 4.5-5m option though.

Dawson obviously has an attacking threat so I was leaning towards him. However, I was checking the new "Minutes per Baseline BPS" variable in the members tables and Dawson is the worst defender in the whole league that played considerable minutes, also 10 yellow cards is pretty off-putting.

Are there better options in the West Brom defence?

At the moment my whole team is dependent on how confident I am with my WBA picks. Feel like I'll either triple up (Foster, Dawson, Rodriguez) or go without entirely. Foster could be great value but I like de Gea as a route into the United defence. Dawson has goal threat but at £5m needs more clean sheets. Rodriguez could be great value, might even get double figure goals for £6m but injury prone and the Baggies don't like to score goals.

WBA as a team always look to defend first, last season they didn't do that very well. Lots of old players and a thin squad with a few injuries who didn't look hugely motivated towards the end of last season. Increasingly talking myself out of having their players.

proven PL who has had won more tackles than any United or Chelsea midfielder since 2014/15. No risk either because he wont take a season to adapt. him and lukaku are great buys. pogba will have the freedom to cause havoc now.. i would say in this day n age that is a quality signing.

This comes across as extremely salty. I'm an Arsenal fan and even I would admit that it's a great signing for United, they've lacked a proper DM for a while now (Carrick doesn't count) and Pogba would presumably be able to raid further forward.

35m for a proven Dm who has good 3-4yrs left in him.

This enables Jose to play 4-3-3 which allows Pogba to play in his natural position i.e., as a box to box midfielder.

Hmm first of all 35mn for a still 28 year old unless you follow aussie time :p

He will give Pogba more of licesnce to freely roam in between CM and Striker. He hit woodwork far too many times last season. With less of defensive responsibilities he may just the chances in this time :)...Plus with matic being good at throughballs which his 8 assists also show from last season, Pogba and Lukaku gonna have great seasons in all likelihood...

And its fine you Liv fan...Many have hangups still with that rivalry...Its city neighbours which are more of threat now compared to the old powerhouse of 1990s....Each to its own...I just care for Manutd to keep others off the perch 🙂

Most of Matic's assists were 2 yard sideways passes about 35 yards out

By that I assume you mean more prolific? Pogba is already getting into dangerous positions but for some reason his rate of goals/assists is poor. Some players just seem to have that steely knack in front of goal, make the correct decisions and don't signpost their intentions to the keeper/defenders. Pogba hasn't demonstrated any of those skills to any great degree so far so yeah the jury is out on whether Matic will make a difference....we shall see.
