Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, we move to focus on one of the key sources of Fantasy talent – Tottenham Hotspur.

We start by analysing their performance on a team level, assessing last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas improvement. Following that, we drill down into the player data, pinpointing the key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on two specific points of interest for Fantasy managers – assessing the Dele Alli versus Christian Eriksen conundrum, while weighing up the allure of Harry Kane as a “fire and forget” captaincy option.

It’s fair to say that Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed their mettle last season after a disastrous end to 2015/16 saw them pick up two points in the final four fixtures and tumble out of the title race.

Spurs improved their points haul from 70 to 86 and also scored far more goals than beforehand – a total of 86 was far superior to 69 in the previous campaign and more than any team in the top-flight.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I have 4 left backs in my starting line-up and looking at the team just bothers me. Do I have obsessive compulsive disorder?

Why not PvA, out of interest? Should be wingback vs Huddersfield in GW1. I'd prefer him over a Southampton defender until they show some form.

Me too. That's why it bothers me looking at the team. Serouisly considering dropping Bertrand for Trippier just to balance the screen. First world problems...

Try doing colours too, as well as RW, CB, LW, looks fantastic. This is where Trip & Bert are great, then a nice red CB.

I must admit I am guilty of that too! Ideally if you can have all players in their natural positions with the colours nicely balanced and the captain & vice captain aligned in the centre of the screen you're good to go.

I do all of the above as well, specifically ranking my players from left to right. Lukaku is a real problem for me this year as a result. He is left footed, so I want him on the left of my front 3, but he is also my current captain, so I want him in the middle!

This is causing me great anguish at the moment haha!

I don't mind where my (c) is, fortunately. I seem to have escaped that particular foible. But I do like my team to look as if it made some kind of sense as a football team.

In the past I have had to hold myself back from commenting on other people's RMTs only to say that they have written the team out in the wrong order. 😕

But at least I know it's irrational. Would be even worse if I didn't. 🙂

Aaron Ramsey has had a very good pre-season and seems to be thriving in that box-to-box, "free-ish" role afforded to him - seems like a very good option at that price, provided he can stay fit of course!

Have most people on here gone off Alonso after the hype earlier in pre season? Seeing a lot more Kolasinac instead, then obviously some of the Sanchez talk which will inevitably result in no Alonso. Personally think (as an example) Alonso and Mane is a better option than a 4.5 and Sanchez, right? As much as I'd love Sanchez in my team...

It's the same reason I haven't got Kane, I just think the extra cash makes the overall team look better till we have a standout cheapie appear! As much as I dread having to watch Arsenal and Spurs games with neither scoring!!

Not too tricky to get both in tbh, and still have a decent balance. Thing is, we're wedded to certain ideas about cheapos when it's probably the easiest area to adjust down a bit.

Hey Doos. Kane and Eriksen is 7 points for every Spurs goal 🙂

I want to start without Spurs tbh, but I'm considering getting just one seeing that Newcastle are struggling with injuries at the back. My fave is Eriksen and am I right in recalling that his points output was higher when Spurs played with wingbacks (as he was more central)? I seem to remember Eriksen not being as good a pick when Son was hoovering up all the points, but with him injured, maybe Eriksen is the one to get.

With all the uncertainty surrounding starters for United, City and Southampton, all three of which are teams I'm planning on incorporating heavily into my team throughout the season, I'm wondering if you guys think there's any merit in simply picking a GW1 only team with a planned wildcard for GW2? I've never planned an early wildcards so I'd like to know the merits/fallbacks.

    1. How Mina You
      • 12 Years

Thing logically - why on earth would you want to prepare your team in such a short-sighted way that you have to waste your WC so early?! That's just utter madness!

Well, because I can't be sure currently on whether many of the players I want to include are actually going to start for their teams. Aguero, Jesus, Sane, United defence, Austin/Gabbi, Cedric... if I pick a GW1 team, and WC for GW2, I'll have far more of an insight as to who is nailed and who isn't.

        1. How Mina You
          • 12 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

But then how do you know that those who play in GW2 are nailed-on? It's still far too early for teams to decide on their settled starting line-ups. I really don't think you should be preparing your team in such a way that you plan to WC in GW2, but this is a game of opinions and you should trust your instincts if you think they'll serve you well.

          1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
            • 11 Years
            9 years, 1 month ago

In my mind it comes down to the fact that one of the teams I've drawn up as a potential final draft features Aguero, Lindelof, Cedric and Austin... if all four of those don't start, then not only am I in a rather tricky spot for GW1, but also for GW2 onwards, so would probably end up wildcarding anyway. In that case I might has well have just sent out a team designed purely for GW1.

I do understand where you're coming from though.

            1. How Mina You
              • 12 Years

Cedric, Lindelof and Aguero will all be in their teams within a couple of GWs if they don't initially start IMO - what would be the point of WC'ing at that point? Austin's probably the only one to monitor.

This question has been asked to death and in my opinion, there is no correct answer to this question. The answer depends on the type of FPL manager you are - if you are a risk averse manager, you are likely to pick Alli and if on the contrary you are a risk seeking manager, you will pick Eriksen. That's my take on it anyway. 😉

West Ham moved into a new stadium last season. In the first 4 months of the season they played 7 PL games there and only won twice - 1-0 wins over Bournemouth and Sunderland. They were defeated at home by the likes of Watford and Southampton and also lost at the Olympic stadium to Romanian team Astra Giurgiu to get knocked out of the EL.

In fairness, their home results did improve from mid December onwards.

    Just saying. 😉

Yeah it was too big a jump for them, and I don't rate Bilic tactically at all - he didn't know what he was doing. They're just a mess.

Go on ignore they had no RB; LB & CB injured, summer signings couldnt cope in time
Ignore signing Hart & Zabaleta and overcoming injuries.
I suppose you reckon Pulis still does clean sheets too.

They conceded a lot more goals, for sure. I expect Spurs may concede a few more with the wider pitch.

But West Ham still scored 8 goals, and I expect Spurs to still be a threat going forward.

Arguably they conceded a lot of goals because they were playing Antonio at RB.

cheap bench & grit your teeth, cope with a hit or 2 and keep your WC back for when its clearer which teams & players are in form - otherwise you can end up with another bag of punty millstones worse than you started with

My attempt at a Sanchez team:
    Foster - Elliot
    Trippier - Yoshi - Alexander - Suttner - Francis
    Sanchez - Pogba - Phillips - Fraser - Carroll

No Lukaku is kind of goofy probably. Defense is a nightmare.
