Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Right.... Slightly refined my team again........

    Foster [Myhill]
    Kolasinac Valencia Daniels [Rosenior Mariappa]
    KDB Salah Eriksen Iwobi Loftus-Cheek
    Lukaku Lacazette [Abraham]

    Any immediate thoughts??

I'm more of a fan of strength in depth. Can't see Iwobi either scoring big or being super consistent.

Yea, I was thinking about him for quite a while.. Could go either way... but more than likely end up with him NOT being consistent, I agree. Hmmmmmm... More thoughts to be had.

I was loving Iwobi as well, but he's in rotation with ozil and wally (and sanchez if he stays). So with him and RLC, mids are kinda shaky. Rest of the team looks decent

I am hoping that someone will be on the way out of arsenal in midfield..

Wenger said that 33 on the squad is far too many in the last few days.. and that there is more to be done in the transfer window... which gave me hope in Iwobi!

Kola or Valencia for me. Strengthen elsewhere then.

      West Brom's defence is dire

Again, Carroll over RLC all day

      Jesus over Laca

Iwobi is not a great pick

And 2 4.0m defenders not wise

      1. Homo Neanderthalensis

Thanks man... RLC has been switched with Carroll and im re-evaluating Laca and the 2 4mil defenders!! 🙂

Would a dire west brom defence open up bonus point opportunities for the GK's? Thats why Heaton got so many bonus points last year I thought.. the defence hardly touched the ball but Heaton got the saves... Maybe Im wrong here!

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 6 months ago

It goes deeper than that. Heaton got so many baps because the defenders didn't clock up passes so they didn't register high bps compared to other teams who's defenders got 3 baps for cleans

      Strong defense
Kola didn't start today... may be eased in
Iwobi is a punt... fast but not always technically fast (decision making)
Laca adjusting to PL as per Wenger
Abraham is flagged and a punt but I may go with him

      Defense is very strong
Mid needs another premium player... other wise you will have to take a hit to get bandwagon mid from game week 1
JRod plays for defensive WB so a punt- but may work

Guys I need an honest opinion .
Playing a draft league ( 8 playeers ) by auction and missed out on a lot of attacking options .So had to go with the following
    Foster/begovic
    kolasinac/Bertrand/Valencia/Trippier/Azpilicueta
    Mane/ Zaha/Lanzini/Ince/Ritchie
    Firmino/Defoe/Iheanacho
looking at starting atleast 4 defenders..
As part of a free trade after auction , few options are available

    a. francis,shaqiri,arnautovic,redmond,knockaert,mooy,klaasen,fer,philips
    b.tammy,rodriguez,austin,gayle,mitrovic,mounie,gray,vokes,afobe

    any suggestions regarding changes

With Luiz you get some free kicks and spread the clean sheet risk. Bailly doubles you up on man utd who do have nicer fixtures. It's a risk v reward play where you have to make the call.

      Personally I would go Luiz.

I'd just do Alli to Mane. Danilo will have to be downgraded soon anyway when Mendy is back, and the second 4.5 can be upgraded to a bandwagon then.

yes downgrade Valencia to a 5 or 5.5mil defender and spread the wealth , i had him picked last season , and Mou a bunch of times without warning left him out of the squad presumably to rest him , so expect even more of that this season now that they are in the champions league

So does PVA look to be favored over Schlupp now? Could be gold at 5.5 playing the WB role.
