Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Not really looking for opinions, just putting my team out there for variety purposes.

    Foster Elliott
    Bertrand Kompany Valencia Kolasinac Trippier
    Alli Eriksen KDB Pogba 4.5
    Lukaku 4.5 4.5

Trippier becomes Danilo if injured, Alli becomes Salah if I reckon I need Liverpool coverage

If Kane braces GW1 then you'd need 3 transfers to get him in without losing Lukaku.

      Good luck.

Actually 3 transfers for any of Kane Aguero Jesus Lacazette, Lukaku is literally your only makeweight for them without ruining your team.

I was on the 5-4+1 for ages. There was a strong argument against it in the article earlier about playing 4 at the back, so i bottled it. I know how it feels though........the 11 looks outstanding. Not sure how flexible you'll be though with bandwagons etc

      1. Four Letter Wirtz

I remember playing 5 at the back at the start of one or two seasons ago. Once I figured that it wasn't working, it was so painful to waste transfers on defender downgrades and only getting 1.0 or 1.5 millions for each. Realistically, how could you even begin to afford Jesus, Kane or Lacazette if they prosper?

    Repost.

    de Gea / Elliot
    Kompany / Cedric / TAA (Yoshida/Mee)
    KDB / Salah / Zaha / Fraser / Carroll
    Kane / Lukaku / Abraham

Starting with two SOU defenders is risky, but could catch some nice price rises. If I started with Cedric, and he doesn't play, Yoshida comes in. TAA for the first one/two fixtures, too.

Plan to get Trippier back in by downgrading less desirable SOU to a 4.0. Although, that may not be overly wise.

Front 8 I am fine with. Thoughts? Am I overthinking my defense?

Bad thinking, what if Cedric play 45 minutes?
Two Soton defenders is not bad at all because good fixtures, just make sure they both play 90. Stevens for Cedric.
..and forget about price rices, focus on points! 😉

That Super Cup final will take a heavy toll on the Manchester United players maybe we should be wary.

Considering they will be playing in southern Europe specifically Skopje where they are in the midst of a savage heatwave where they are experiencing temperatures in excess of 40 °C West Ham might be a bigger challenge than it seems after such a effort.

That article re four defenders was interesting. I've been settled on 4-3-3 for a while.
That article seemed to say although there were better returns from a decent defender than an average fourth mid, 3-4-3 is better as it allows flexibility for bandwagons/price hiked players? Aren't points more important anymore?

decent def than avge mid? so you're not comparing like for like (as much as you can)? I read it differently. 3-4-3 better because there's less cs certainty at the start, so that 4th def loses appeal until things settle by which time the decent 4th mids will probably be known.

Well I tried converting to 3-4-3 and it hit me when it summarised my transfers. Out: Kompany, Trippier, RLC, Firmino. In: Dawson, Naughton, Mane, Gabbiadini.

Granted there were many options but my choice left me wishing I still had those city/spurs defenders over Southampton mid/forwards.

Just stick to your plan. If it was 4-3-3 - just go this way. Maybe this is good strategy until early WC?

why would you choose 4 defs when defensive form is a unknown and cs are more scarce than later on?

Because the 343 formation change in real football has made wing backs midfielders.

but there are still generally more points from mids and a larger selection to choose from. Last year zaha, bark, lallana, red, snod, lanzini, etc

Not at the 6.5/7 price range there isn't, if you buy a mid in that range you will buy inconsistency, if you buy a 'wingback' for that price you will get an attacking wingback in a top defensive team who keep 12 to 13+ clean sheets a season.

The article is weak, every person asked to comment points out the way the game has changed with regards to wingbacks scoring strong points due to formation changes making them midfielders then dismisses the fantasy formation because it choses to look at defenders as defenders and not reclassified midfielders, it makes no sense.

To experienced players it must read like they are confused.

Sticking to an old formation can not be justified when the real game has changed and is moving on, move with it or have one good year, one bad year.
