The Technical Area makes a return for the new season and I’m delighted to have joined the Fantasy Football Scout writing team to bring this to you.

These articles will mainly be available for members following Gameweek 1 but, for my debut, I offer a preview of what is to come with some analysis of Sunday’s Wembley showpiece.

The final domestic appetiser to the upcoming season, Sunday’s Community Shield between champions Chelsea and FA Cup winners Arsenal proved a sedate affair that will perhaps be remembered more for the involvement of referee Bobby Madley than any single player’s contribution.

Nonetheless, as our last chance to observe two high-profile Premier League sides in action before the Gameweek 1 deadline – and with many popular FPL assets presumed to participate – interest from the Fantasy community was understandably high.

With only the one game to analyse this week, we’ll be focusing our attention on the performances of two newly-signed Arsenal players who put forward interesting, if very different, showings on the field.

Sead Kolašinac

We’ll start with Sead Kolašinac, whose afternoon threatened to be something of a non-event after he was named among the substitutes to open the match. A nasty head injury to Per Mertesacker on the half-hour mark, however, gave the Bosnian his chance to shine; an opportunity he seized with both hands.

Though pre-season projections had earmarked Kolašinac to compete for a spot as a left-wing back in Arsenal’s 3-4-2-1 system, Wenger’s substitution saw the Bosnian fielded as a left-sided central defender alongside Nacho Monreal and Rob Holding.

Typically, we would have expected this more defensive positioning to have impinged upon Kolašinac’s chances to get forward in support of the Arsenal attack. Yet analysing our game data, we can observe that Kolašinac was frequently occupying space upon the left-flank, consistently drifting out to the touchline to receive possession:

Kolasinac – Passes Received
members

This profile translates much more readily to the heatmap of a traditional left wing-back than that of a centre half. In fact, it is eerily reminiscent of the performance and positioning of another left-sided wide player participating in Sunday’s match:

Kolasinac vs Alonso – Touches
members

Given Alonso’s barnstorming FPL campaign in 2016/17, Kolašinac’s tendencies to occupy the same attacking space – even in spite of his ostensibly more defensive position – bodes well for his likelihood of producing attacking returns heading into the new season.

The defender also demonstrated an ability to pose a threat on the end of set-pieces, notching Arsenal’s equaliser by rising to divert Granit Xhaka’s cross into the net.

The underlying numbers for Kolašinac were promising too. Despite playing only limited minutes, the defender produced 17 passes in opposition territory (with a 100% success rate), including five in the final third. These compared favourably to those of Alonso (10, 5) and Victor Moses (12, 7).

It should be noted that Hector Bellerin – playing on the right-hand flank of Arsenal’s formation – outshone even Kolašinac in this regard, with 29 passes in the opposing half and 21 in the danger zone, while he created two excellent goalscoring opportunities in the process.

Such a performance demonstrates the attacking potential of the wing-back position within Arsenal’s current set-up and underlines the tantalising prospects of either player as an FPL asset moving forward.

Kolašinac also put in an impressive defensive performance, winning all three of his tackles and racking up five recoveries – traits which would translate well into FPL’s Bonus Point System (BPS).

Alexandre Lacazette

In contrast to Kolašinac’s impressive debut, Lacazette cut a significantly less imposing figure during Sunday’s match-up.

Often isolated in space against Chelsea’s trio of centre backs, Lacazette amassed just 24 touches during his disappointing 66-minute spell – fewer than any other starter. Of these, far too many were found by dropping deep into space ahead of Chelsea’s backline, from which he was quickly smothered by defensive pressure.

Lacazette – Touches
members

The Frenchmen displayed occasional glimpses of his attacking prowess. On two or three occasions, Lacazette found himself in dangerous positions; only for Chelsea’s defensive line to close on him before he had a chance to capitalise.

His brightest moment came in the first-half, when he was able to free himself on the edge of the penalty area and curl an early shot against the post. Yet this effort would prove to be Lacazette’s only goal attempt of the match and he would be replaced shortly after the hour mark by Olivier Giroud (who himself failed to make much of an impression, albeit in limited time).

The usual caveats apply here, of course – this was only a single match, and consequently it is certainly much too early for us to jump to any definitive conclusions about Lacazette’s Fantasy prospects for the coming year. For the record, I am optimistic of his season-long goalscoring potential, as are our Rate My Team projections.

It is similarly important to note that Arsenal were missing the combined creative impetus of Mesut Özil, Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey for this fixture – players who would have both demanded defensive attention and worked to produce more threatening through-balls to the striker.

Nonetheless, even after claiming his first trophy as a member of Arsene Wenger’s squad, this was likely not a match that Lacazette will want to remember.

Hi, please help me for Liverpool cover, which is the better choice and why.

    A. Firmino + Willian
    B. Mane + Abraham + 0,5m
    C. Salah + Abraham + 1,0m

    Thx you.

i'm actually quite happy with this. all nailed-on players who are good and/or have good fixtures. any thoughts?

main downsides are - weak midfield [on the face of it but i think it's actually decent, guaranteed starters, most of them on set pieces, great fixtures]; 0 ITB [not happy with this but overall an acceptable sacrifice]; expensive keeper [against conventional wisdom but i think it's ok, the other routes into man utd defence just look too risky].

    de gea-elliott
    alderweirald-bertrand-francis
    kdb-carroll-redmond-mooy
    lukaku-firminho-kane

subs [this week only, ritchie will typically start] - ritchie, dunk, lascelles.

      Poorly constructed team

Alderweirald is not as much of a goal threat (unless he improves and goes to his previous form)

      Francis not nailed

You will depend on kdb/firm/kane/lukaku to deliver goals/assist otherwise you'll rank badly.

      Too much spent on bench

        "Too much spent on bench"

Nah. I've got Francis in there for the first week, when New play spurs, but after that plan A for the bench is 4.0-4-.5-4.5-4.5

        "Francis not nailed"

OK, good tip. Will def look to switch.

"Alderweirald... not as much of a goal threat"

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with him, brought him hurriedly when Trippier got crocked. Really I just mean the best 6.0 defender I can think of.

If you want a 6.0 defender Kompany is probably a good shout, or stick in Danilo for first few weeks whilst Mendy is out & swap for Trippier when fit. Saves you 0.5mil & should time well

My gut feeling is to go without him at he start, but as we get closer to the deadline, I'm more worried that he'll start well.

Thing is my gut, despite being rather large these days, can't predict the future and has no connection or impact on what someone does in football match.

    bottomed:

So which player is going to be the most common 'bad decision' in opening several weeks of the season?

I'm going to say KdB. Not because he'll be BAD as such, but because:

He's in almost every top managers team
He's playing catch-up on cheaper players Alli, Eriksen and only equaled PPG of the much cheaper Mane
He was almost equaled by Siggy and Son, at 1.5 and 2m cheaper respectively
The move is a gamble that his 2017 form will significantly improve (i.e. by 25 points +) or that all other options will worsen

It's a move out of fear not rationality and a costly gamble

No decent player builds a team around GW1. He's a £10m player. That's surgery material to redistribute if you get the decision wrong. Plenty of excellent midfielders will also score points in GW1

Though it's several years in and he has yet to seal the kind of season long essential status that the games top, top midfielders achieve. There are several options who are potent goal threats, or, like Eriksen, match his assist threat for less money

He's had spells of injury each season at City and last year he was at the whims of Pep's rotations against weaker teams, especially at home. He has been incredible in pre-season though and there is little doubt that City will score goals for fun this season (probably concede plenty too!)

But it is too risky without kdb. Good fixture, nailed, attacking team. While liv players are promising but i guess only firmino and coutinho (if he stays) that are safe option imo. You pay extra mil for more certainty and i am happy with that

I havent got him out of fear i assure you. I am convinced city will have a higher output this year and will win league with him being a huge part of that. I think he'll score 220 plus this season.

    DDG

    Yoshida / Danilo / Kolasinac

Willian / KDB / Ritchie / Milo or JWP / Carroll

    Lukaku / Kane / Firmino

    Cheers

also you invest too much in def but mid and fwd can produce more point.

I've got both Kane and Lukaku and then a midfield that contains Mane and KDB. Where would you suggest upgrading?

Normally go 3-4-3. I don't particularly like Abraham but Llorente is out and he does look like a bit of a goal machine so could be a steal.

I'm not sure which other forward in the 6-7.5 bracket is worth losing either Kola or Lindehoff for or which midfielder is worth upgrading Ritchie too. I had Willian but I don't like Chelsea and he is a time limited pick.

Why is Mounie a better option than Abraham? Worst of the promoted sides and a player that has never set foot in English football.

    Hello everyone,

my first RMT, any advice is greatly appreciated.

    0.5m itb

    Foster (Elliot)
    Lindelof Dawson Holding (Cedric, Schindler)
Salah Ali De Bruyne Zaha (Carroll)
    Lukaku Firmino Rodriguez

    1. Are Lindelof/ Holding good picks for starters?
    2. Any way i can get Jesus over Firmino?
    3. Is Rodriguez a donkey pick?

    Thanks!

Can't wait for Friday's deadline so I can stop changing my team up.

Definitely want a City striker, so it's who to lose in Kane and Lukaku?

    Forster
    TAA, Danilo, Ake, Bertrand
    Zaha, KDB, Salah
    Jesus, Kane, Firmino

    Elliot, TC, Cork, Long

I would appreciate thoughts on this please. I'm playing 4 2 2 plus rotating the 5 cheap guys. I chose this because I want a big defence and don't like any 6.5m mids or forwards, for now. I will likely change this once form becomes clear.

    Forster Elliott
    Kompany, Bailly, Bertrand, Davies, Francis
    KDB, Salah, Atsu, Caroll, Fraser
    Lukaku, Kane, Calvert-Lewin

    Apologies for the missing gravatar.
