In our final article looking at the player list in the Sky Sports game, we bring you our top targets in attack.

While forwards don’t always offer the best value due to their inflated prices compared to the other positions, they more than make up for that in points.

Or at least the right forwards do.

The three top-scoring players in the game last season were Alexis Sanchez (285), Harry Kane (282) and Romelu Lukaku (248) who, when paired with the armband, were obviously the stand-out options over the course of the season.

They commanded hefty fees back then and do so again now. But skimping at the back and targeting value in midfield should afford us the ability spend the bulk of our cash on an expensive front two or three.

Using our transfer swaps to move the forwards in and out as fixtures and form dictate is also useful, as having expensive place holders means that any single player is potentially just one transfer move away.

It’s been a tried and tested recipe for success in Sky Sports over the seasons and the new overhaul feature appears to only strengthen this strategy.

And if a less expensive forward does challenge the heavy-hitters then we can react, maybe with a direct swap from midfield, although pre-overhaul, it seems foolhardy to take the risk.

As a result, our favorite picks won’t come as much of surprise.

The Picks

Harry Kane – 12.9 – 45.9% – Fixtures: new CHE BUR
Kane is the most owned player in the game, after picking up the Golden Boot last season and doing so in emphatic style, netting seven times in the final two fixtures. In fact, Kane’s record has been stunning since he first graced the Premier League, having scored 78 goals in 113 appearances to date.

He is also one of the few forwards to earn bonus through the shots on target route, picking up 26 points due to his unerring accuracy – the equivalent of five extra goals. The Englishman will be heavily captained pre-overhaul due to all Spurs’ fixtures falling on a Sunday, which makes him all the more appealing. There really isn’t any reason we can see not to go for Spurs’ talisman – unless you buy into the theory that he starts the season slowly.

Romelu Lukaku – 12.4 – 41.8% – Fixtures: WHU swa LEI
Manchester United’s new marquee striker signing scored 25 goals for Everton last term and ended up as the Sky Sports game’s third highest scoring player overall. He also managed four MoTM awards and six assists to supplement this tally. The prospect of playing in a more dominant team this season means that most would expect him to improve further on this total, with over 40% seemingly backing this theory. With a favourable three matches to start the season – and two of those falling on different days to Harry Kane – he offers an ideal front two captain partner for the Spurs assset.

Gabriel Jesus – 12.1 – 9.7% – Fixtures: bha EVE bou
Such is the dominance of Kane and Lukaku in early squad selections that last season’s wonderkid has practically been forgotten, with just over 9% making the swoop so far.

The Brazilian started only eight games (two sub appearances) due to injury after his January arrival, but still managed seven goals, four assists and two MoTM awards. His impact was great enough to leave the mercurial Sergio Aguero (12.8m) with bench duty at times. The duo are expected to start the season together, however, and form a deadly strike partnership. City have also been on fire in pre-season and, should either of the South Americans continue that form in the first three games, we may be forced into picking an incredibly expensive front three.

Alexandre Lazazette – 11.8 – 17.8% – Fixtures: LEI stk liv
Arsenal kick us off on Friday night and perhaps that is a factor behind the Gunners new front man attracting over 17% ownership.

Captain coverage is obviously key in Sky, and the Frenchman looks the best option for that fixture as it stands. Twenty-eight goals in as many starts for Lyon last season is obviously impressive, as is his rate of shooting of roughly 2.8 shots on goal per match.

Alexis Sanchez (12.7m) was the game’s highest scoring player, and if he remains at Arsenal will surely warrant serious attention post-overhaul. But he has been ruled out of the opener and perhaps the two matches that follow, so he has been excluded from our thinking.

Manolo Gabbiadini– 10.3 – 2.7% – Fixtures: SWA WHU hud
The Saints’ fixtures are the main attraction here, with the Italian our stand-out pick on offer.

Opponents Swansea City and West Ham both only managed two clean sheets away from home last season, while the newly-promoted Huddersfield Town shipped 32 goals on their travels in the Championship.

The January signing made an instant impact before tailing off, but he still managed to earn 47 points in just ten starts and one substitute appearance. In reality, it’s hard to look past the pricier options above, but Gabbiadini could yet offer us a cheeky differential at just 2.5% ownership.

Something I've never understood on here is the criticism and fear of doubling up on defences. Or tripling even.

Saw a few messages on recent pages about Southampton x2/3 defence and general view seems its too risky.

Lets say for players at 5.0-5.5 type defences like them, they keep about 12 CS all season. Say Everton maybe similar, Leicester West Brom Stoke West Ham Swansea or Bournemouth maybe 10 or thereabouts. We're talking about a less than 1 in 3 for CS from these types.

Is doubling or even tripling on Saints with those fixtures really that big a concern? Especially when we can WC when the fixtures turn red.

If I have 3 from these sort of teams playing each week and get 1 CS on average, in 3 week spell, thats 3 CSs If I triple Saints, and they get 1 CS, again, thats 3 CSs.

Sure its bad in a given week if they concede and all 3 CSs go but if they don't, your highly rewarded.

The spreading the risk thing isn't that different really as you still generally will get 1/3 CSs. Its more or less just a safety blanket feeling that you might get 1 on a given week. But chances of 3 separate CSs from 3 different teams on a given week is low, so really, it all just balances out.

I don't see why its that highly advised against to avoid doubling or tripling on a side when their fixtures are that good.

Chances are if Southampton end up on 12 CSs, (less than 1/3) theyll get a higher ratio in these opening fixtures. So if you go x2 or x3 now, then flip to another side for x2/3 when their fixtures turn good, surely your likely to get more rewards overall than just spreading the risk across teams when that just balances out anyway?

I'm currently on 2 Southampton defence

It's more of a matter of spreading the risk

      I agree
Im doubling defences almost ever season, even tried to triple it with wbrom
Especialy if those guys have attacking threat

For me they have to fulfill 3 conditions

        -low or mid price
        -attacking potential

It's complete nonsense, Sanchez, and you're right to call it. Aside from specific competitions like LMS (thanks Kalmoffit!) over several fixtures you will average the same returns as if you spread the risk across multiple defences. In fact you should do better if you are correct in predicting the conditions which made you consider the double-up in the first place.

I think what the real risk is that Southampton for example don't keep 12 clean sheets or at least not even one for the first three matches. Then it's quite difficult to keep the confidence.

    10. Limited & Mediocre Mana…
      • 10 Years

It's mathematically sound to double up, sure. But it IS higher risk/reward in that only one goal can negate both CS as oppsoed to two.

I have 3 myself. Forster and 2 defenders.

The criticism makes no sense really. If they had 3 defenders from 3 different teams and all of them blanked in a GW, no one would care. But if the same happened from 3 defenders from the same team, it's suddenly different. Blanks from defenders happen often, in every team. If other teams' defences/fixtures aren't as appealing as Southampton's at 5.0m, why 'spread the risk'? Like you said, chances of 3 separate clean sheets from 3 different teams in a GW is low.

      A. Firmino pretty undroppable by Klopp and plays every game. Mane more likely to be withdrawn when a game is won.

Hazard could be back in time for the spurs game. And if Conte toys with Batman and Morata up front in 3-5-2 then villain has no place while fabrehas does.

Also Fab has a way higher points per minute ratio than Willian

Got Begovic and Bertrand locked in, but would like a few second opinions on my 5m defence spot if possible. Currently got Stephens due to fixtures and his bap attracting style of play as well as potential to price rise with low ownership & fixtures. Other option is Daniels due to attacking potential, which would be better iyo?

    A) Stephens

    Or

    B) Daniels

Horse bolted years and years ago on this one. Pogba deal already made very good financial sense to United, sure Neymar one will be the same for PSG. Can't blame clubs for spending money, lack of regulation and supremely wealthy ownership creates a market where these fees aren't even that big a splash. Everyone has all the money - TV deals and sponsorship money rising at incredible rates - transfer fees explosion just a byproduct of that.

Pep thinks he can mould jesus into a player of his style. He doesn't see that in kun, therefore jesus looks more nailed. Kun can't play wide either. Kun is a better finisher and I think that can only make him sharper and hungrier. As soon as pep plays both, I'm swapping out lakuku for kun. I have Jesus

Reckon you could be right there. However I feel Firminho will be a 9 mil striker too.

Wow burnley 11. I guess that they've lost main defender but Heaton in goal, chelsea out of sorts, could easily be nil nil. Could be worth a tenner

If I may: Alli is 3m cheaper than Kane and scored the same amount of points last year. No brainer doing that spread?

He also played 6 games more. But i get your point and am going Eriksen over Kane and spending the 3m elsewhere

I know going into a game i'd prefer to gamble on not having Alli than Kane. that being said... 3mil can make a massive difference in other areas

That's been my puzzle all day.
          Alli + Lukaku
          Vs
          Pogba + Kane

Not much difference cash wise (0.5) and the points per minute works out almost the same.

          Tricky (and still undecided)

Is Pedro worth the extra £1m over Willian? Got £1.5m in the bank and not sure whether to just hold or invest.

£4.5m - still unsure who to pick
        Kolasinac Bertrand Danillo Ake
        Willian Zaha Fraser
        Kane Aguero Lukaku

        Elliot Carroll Romeu £4m

Not confident in West Brom, was looking more towards Gomes with Marco Silva now there, or even Matt Ryan (should get save points and then Brighton have nice fixtures after GW3)

Danillo likely to rotate a lot, be careful there.

Mostly a place holder until Trippier comes back, could always save £0.5m for Kompany if Danillo does get dropped.

Another Ryan backer! Im looking at him or Gomes, think Ryan will be a shot stopper and looking past GW3 Brighton's fixtures are great

I dont think Pedro is worth the extra million. Maybe try to get a liverpool player over Willian by downgrading your defence.

Was thinking maybe downgrade Bertrand to Cedric which would allow Willian > Salah, just dont know about Pool's playtime with their fixture congestion in the first month

No he's not. Best 4.5 goalkeeper is probably Foster. Very strong defence and attack however the downside of that shows when you look at your midfield. Maybe consider swapping Aguero to Jesus then upgrading Willian to Mane/Salah/Alli/Eriksen.

Thanks, going to be uncharted territory for myself this year, think Defence and Strikers provide the best value for money currently, though it could all change after GW1.

I've got the top 6 teams covered bar Liverpool.

Rather than just say why here's why I don't think its crazy....

Bertrand is a great attacking defender regardless of fixtures really, with better fixtures a more attractive option, I wouldn't touch any other defender due to the uncertainty surrounding them.

It so happens that I don't like any 4.5m GK's, meaning I'm left with 5+, last year I had too much tied up in De Gea all season and don't want to make that mistake.

Leaves Heaton and Forster so for me initially at least Forster will score more points and hence I have a Saints double up.

GK + def isn't as bad but I was referring mainly to Bertrand + Yoshida/Cedric/Stephens
