It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Their aim was to use a tc on day to get the best rank

Was either him or lacazette realistically for a monster score

I actually disagree. If he was hoping to be top GW1 he would have picked 3 players from Arsenal and Leicester. Plus he has £20m in the bank. He would have upgraded to Ozil etc.

I think he was trying to pick a team where everyone plays but you have to get the least amount of points.

He's a good pick, but long term once I build value I'd prefer to go higher (Jesus/Laca) or save and get Chica if he can hit form - allowing Mane or Salah.

        TEAM NEWS

Southampton say unsettled defender Virgil van Dijk is unavailable for their opening game because of a virus.

New Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has no major injury concerns and could field summer signings Mario Lemina and Jan Bednarek.

Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson, who is a transfer target for Everton, will not be involved on Saturday.

Ki Sung-yueng, Nathan Dyer and Fernando Llorente are injured but Roque Mesa and Tammy Abraham could make their debuts.

Vardy had a free header from a corner at the near post and both '' centre backs '' failed to pick him up when Albrighton crossed in . I think Vardy is going to do well anyway . This game in no way changes my opinion of him because Arsenal were so bad

Vardy looked super hungry. The Vardy of 2 seasons ago. But Arsenal did play to his strengths.

Very very bad. Poor challenging for aerial duels, but you've got to remember that Holding was the only recognised centre half playing so you kind of expect it until Kocsielny comes back.

Vardy, and Leicester looked very good. A decent season looms. They still have some tricky fixtures to deal with so I'll be monitoring the likes of Vardy, Albrighton, Maguire and see if Nacho gets more game time.

Arsenal defence was terrible but it was makeshift and should settle down. Holding was well out of his depth (the cheap option) but Kol looked 'a tank'.

Iwobi would've been a wank punt anyway even if he played. Don't remember the last time he got an FPL haul even with regular starts. He has his moments but is barely 'directly' involved in the scoring.

I took Iwobi out because whilst I was convinced he'd start, I expected him to be a place-holder for Sanchez for just 1 or 2 games. I can cover for a couple of short-term risks, but I've already got Danilo, Jones and TAA at the back, so in the end I opted to for the security of Carroll who'll be able to step up off my bench whenever called upon.

I'm pretty certain Jones will start for United. Can't say I'm 100% certain. Many punts are like this.

Sometimes real life takes over and you can't put quite as much time into fantasy football.

I have to up sticks and go to England next week to do a job and am worried that i wont be able to give fantasy football and watching games the time that i would like to.

Anyone think fantasy has distorted the whole prem's view of football. Xhaka's two assists getting headlines, would anyone have mentioned a corner assist in the old days!?

The other wtf-statistic: it doesn't look like he/she spent a penny more than £80m for the entire team? So, ok... some might think it's fun to 'king for a day', but why not at least attempt at a competitive squad for the remaining 9 players?...lol
**and then as I was writing this, I realized they're one of those 'team-value nutz' ...entire team is priced so low, they can only go up in value! Those lot don't care about the actual point system; and he's the #1 in the game! Lol!...at least for a few hrs..

you should see the leaderboards for the sky game , most of the top 100 just have Arsenal and Leicester players packed into their team , most of them will no doubt use their quota of 5 weekly subs for tomorrow too in the scramble to finish top for the week , its pretty sad

As an Arsenal fan a few thoughts:

        1. Our defence was missing Mertesacker, Mustafi and Koscielny, it will get better.
        2. Xhaka cost us dearly with some of Leicester's goals. He is great in opposition half but a burden in defence (or lack thereof)
        3. Kolasinic could be best PL signing of the season.
        4. Lacazette has that killer instinct, will score plenty.
        5. Giroud: what a header! Super sub if ever i've seen one...

From a FPL point of view, though, I think it's safe to stay clear and monitor for now. Attack looking very promising, but atm anything can happen with that team.

          Arsenal should:

          1) Sell Sanchez out of the PL
          2) Sell Ox
          3) Buy Lemar
          4) Buy a big, strong, mobile defensive midfielder

          Cech
          Mustafi Koscielny Monreal
          Bellerin ????? Xhaka Kolasinac
          Ozil Lemar

Got to say, I miss Granville on the Scoutcast. Bit of Northern humour, taking the mick out of Jonty and playing mind games with Mark 😉 Hopefully he'll be back on from time to time.

Busy with other things I guess. Shame though, would like to see more of him about. I used to love the Scoutcasts with just him and Mark. The ones now are good too though.

Is it true that Conte could leave Chelsea because their squad is too short and because Abramovich has been selling players without conte's permission?

If you've watched Xhaka lately you wouldn't be surprised, he's started to dictate games and is more offensive with his passing then he gets credit for.

Takes set pieces and is become a key midfielder, only downside is his bookings but he seems to be more controlled now.

Not every player has to be template to be pickabke, watching the games is a good start.

Unlucky mate, there's another board I go on where Xhaka was spoken about amongst posters after the Community Shield because they could see the potential there for this season, watching games should never be phased out by burying heads in stats.

Cheap starter for top 6 club who also takes some set pieces. What's not to like?

A lot of poor passes last night though and was at fault for 2 of the goals.
