The second Captain Poll of the season arrives to canvas your opinion on the key contenders for the Gameweek 2 armband.

A brace on his Premier League debut for Manchester United yesterday means that Romelu Lukaku (11.5) is guaranteed to be among the front runners.

He travels to a Swansea City side that conceded more shots in the box (16) than any side in Gameweek 1. With his ownership reaching the 50% mark over the weekend, he also has weight of numbers on his side as he looks to address the away drought that saw him score just twice in his final 10 road trips for Everton.

The Red Devils’ emphatic 4-0 victory against West Ham also shone the light on two more possible contenders – the 8.3% owned Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.0), who collected two assists and a pair of bonus points, and Paul Pogba (8.0), who got on the scoresheet and sits in 21.6% of teams.

Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away to Watford highlighted their defensive frailties, but also underlined the wealth of attacking talent among their ranks, with Sadio Mane (9.5), Mohammed Salah (9.0) and Roberto Firmino (8.5) all scoring.

As with last season, the vote for a Reds captain is likely to be split ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit, although with a goal and assist against the Hornets it would be unsurprising if Salah was the most popular of the trio. He is already the most owned player among Jurgen Klopp’s ranks, with a place in 25.7% of FPL teams.

However, with penalty duties added to his repertoire, the 23.1%-owned Firmino could also prosper and even leapfrog his Egyptian team-mate in the latest poll. It is worth noting that Salah may not be favoured by the Fantasy Premier League’s bonus point system, having seen four of his five shots against Watford miss the target.

The only player to register more misses was Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini (7.0), who hosts a West Ham side still reeling from yesterday’s heavy defeat. None of the Italian’s five shots were on target against Swansea, which is likely to see his popularity wane despite the favourable fixture. Hauled off after 69 minutes and replaced by Charlie Austin, Gabbiadini will be hoping to retain his role on the teamsheet despite such an ineffectual display.

Shooting accuracy was where Jamie Vardy (8.5) excelled in Leicester’s loss to Arsenal on Friday – he scored from both of his goal attempts. A home tie against Brighton should ensure he prospers in the poll, although he will have to be equally precise as his opponents managed to keep Manchester City down to just six shots in the box in their 2-0 home loss on Saturday evening.

In saying that, it’s worth noting that the Seagulls conceded almost twice the number of goals (26 to 14) on the road than they shipped in front of their own fans last term.

Since Friday, more than 93,000 FPL managers have recruited the Foxes’ talisman.

Sergio Aguero (11.5) proved to be the hero at the Amex Stadium, having broken the deadlock at the 70-minute mark, and he looks to be secure for a start at home to Everton this weekend in Pep Guardiola’s preferred 3-5-2 formation. The 11.8%-owned Argentine could be the leading figure among City’s key captaincy candidates, although eagle-eyed voters would have noticed that the 12.4%-owned Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0), who is in 30.4% of teams, fired off four shots apiece on Saturday to ensure they will garner interest.

Involvement in tough-to-call matches, such as Arsenal against Leicester City last Gameweek and Spurs hosting of Chelsea this time around, can weaken players’ chances of securing the armband.

Nevertheless, many could decide to keep the faith with Harry Kane (12.5), who was second in last week’s poll.

Granted, the 35.7%-owned striker failed to find the net in Spurs’ 2-0 away victory over Newcastle United yesterday, but he next takes on a Chelsea side he has scored four times against in eight encounters.

The Blues shipped three goals in their defeat to Burnley, which further strengthens Kane’s captaincy credentials, as does his six shots against the Magpies on Sunday – more than any forward in Gameweek 1.

With a goal at St James’ Park, Kane’s teammate Dele Alli (9.5) may also attract attention, as could Christian Eriksen (9.5), who notched two assists and maximum bonus points in Gameweek 1. The Dane’s 31,000 new owners since Friday will certainly be hoping he can reward their faith.

Chelsea’s capitulation against the Clarets will likely mute interest in their assets, however, the 7.2%-owned Alvaro Morata (10.0) and Willian (7.0), who has an 18.% ownership, may have done enough to secure a decent poll standing. The Spaniard registered a goal and assist off the bench, while Willian also notched assist points.

Among the differential options this week is Christian Benteke (8.0), who scored a brace last time he visited Anfield, in April. However, his side’s 3-0 loss to Huddersfield at the weekend may be too fresh in the mind for those voting this week.

Sticking with the Terriers, their 6.0-priced striker Steve Mounie looks another strong alternative for the armband. He scored twice against Crystal Palace and hosts a Newcastle side racked by injuries and suspension following that bruising home defeat to Spurs. Still in just 2.0% of sides, the former Montpelier marksman has attracted 49,000+ new owners since the weekend.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we’re looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I am the Man who told you all Mounie would be golden when NO ONE ELSE DID.

No one listened to me, I said it weeks ago. You were all too clever for me weren't you.

            Backfired on ya.

My next advice? Timothy Fosu-Mensah. He is an absolute demon and will be fantasy gold. Like Mounie, he's very cheap and you can all afford to get him. I'm not saying he'll do much against Liverpool, but between now and GW6, you can expect him to excel his price tag and become a part of most managers template for the season.

The sooner you get him in, the better. Once his price tag starts to rise, it will be quick.

My reason? Simple. the Palace system, De Boer's methods coupled with Mensah's ability as a football say to me, Like Mounie, he is going to have an absolute stormer of a season for his value.

You've got a 6ft 3 super athlete, incredibly quick, excellent in the box from set pieces. I'm expecting 5 goals from him. He can play right wing back easily and he can also play in the midfield.

            Golden.

You're a strange one. You were saying Mane and Salah were bad picks without Couthino two days ago and then praised them following their points. No wisdom here.

I didn't say they were bad picks, Re-read things, don't put words in other peoples mouths.

I explained why they both weren't as appealing as they were before the Coutinho news broke and it was confirmed he's very likely to leave.

My post still applies, those two were the best options from that team as I explained, but their supply is now limited to Wijnaldum and Hendo so their output will be lower that what it would have been with Coutinho.

It's a solid case, you can argue it but you'd be wrong.

You don't want to take my advice, tough luck.

you might be right, but as we seen against watford Firmino will benefit from those BPS beeing listed as striker, and Coutinho is a BPS magnet so that will potentially enhance Salah and Mané´s chances of getting bonuspoints, so while your reasoning is justified in one point it will also create some other non-foreseeable traits.

Fosu Mensa could be good, agreed

On the other hand, LIverpool next and with so much uncertainty a 0-3 loss to newly promoted team gives, i would wait at least for a game or two, a normal reaction to something like that is to make wholesale changes to the team, etc.

I think that is very REACTIVE Fantasy Footballing and although looks after GW1, to me is not good management.

      Here's why.

You initially looked at Vardy vs an Arsenal side and completely wrote him off right? like most other managers would, Vardy v a Big Team equals No.

Then you look at Kane v Newcastle and even for that extra 4 million, you said YES. Again like a lot of other managers.

Now for one week only you want to reverse them, and then a week later reverse them back.

Two reasons why this is bad. From that first game week you haven't learnt the lesson. Football is UNPREDICTABLE. You can have educated guesses, and 5 times out of 10 you may get things right, but the other 5 times, you're wrong.

Who is to say Kane won't get a couple v Chelsea and Vardy have a mare against Brighton?

Brighton have a solid team and will know to drop deep against Vardy, I reckon after 60 mins of this game, Vardy struggling to run behind the defence and you could be feeling a bit miffed.

Spurs however are playing a shaken Chelsea team, whilst they themselves are coming off of a good result against Newcastle. Chelsea are without Cahill now and I imagine they will be nervous and are likely to have a bad game.
I see Spurs putting at least 2 past Chelsea, and Kane will be desperate to break this August issue he has.

So I'm seeing the Kane v Vardy issue completely different to you, I think too many people look at the Big Team, Small Team issue when deciding what players to choose.

My second point to why what you're doing is wrong, as I said before it's REACTIVE. And if you start REACTING to every GW by writing off players like Kane and Jesus and De Bruyne because they have an off week, then you'll be forever chopping and changing your team and pulling your hair out when Jesus doesn't score for 2 game weeks, you take him out and then he whollops in a hattrick.

Remember this, the cream always rises to the top, and if you were looking at Fantasy Football as you would look at a roulette table, you would be thinking "Ok, Kane has had one bad week, but I know he's world class, so he is likely to have a good week the next" the same way you would bet £20 on red, and it be black, you think "ok, the next is more likely to be black" not because of any logic, it's always 50/50 as is football. But probability and likelihood play a factor in roulette exactly the same way it does in Fantasy Football.

Kane, De Bruyne, Jesus. People will be getting rid of these three in their droves. WRONG!!!!

Look at Sanchez last year.... how many games did he go without doing anything? and what did he do in double game week one? BOOM!

Cream always rises to the top. Do not be REACTIVE! be proactive, read my posts on Mounie and Timothy Mensah

There do seem to be more than the usual amount, and the thresholds don't seem to have changed for rises.

Seems there'll be quite a few double risers this week, and quite a few fallers too - esp considering most people do their transfers within 24 hours of the GW: Kane, Alonso & KDB are looking ropey, esp. the latter two who play Sunday / Monday of the next GW

No predicting the worst case scenario for myself. If Zaha falls by Friday and is ruled out also.

What Man Utd defenders are nailed?
I had Lindelof in my team last week.. only for him to not even make the bench

I think one thing that came up a lot last season was realising that in hindsight more patience should have been kept with quality players, such as Hazard. Knee jerking players like Kane now seems like a big mistake.

Agree. Having patience, and not jumping on bandwagons too quickly was something I learned the hard way last year. Kane will deliver, there is no denying that, I picked him for a reason.
