Our Watchlist player rankings – listing would-be mid-term targets – were revised earlier this week following Gameweek 1.

These can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They effectively collate our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

When viewing, it’s important to bear in mind the “rules” at play, particularly when it comes to “coverage”. While Harry Kane sits high in the forward rankings, this can dent the appeal of both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as midfield options. Similarly, if a goalkeeper looks to be the go-to method of covering a defence, this will be reflected in the ranking assigned to their defenders.

As a rule, we try to force ourselves to commit to one player per position per club. However, in some circumstances – when we consider it viable, and maybe even advisable, to double up – two players will be listed.

Right now, with just a single Gameweek to consider, form has not played a major role in the rankings. This will kick in once we have three to four Gameweeks to analyse. However, in some cases – should a striker score a hat-trick for example – we will start reflecting this in the factors shown.

In general, there have been few seismic changes following the opening weekend.

In goal, we’ve promoted West Brom’s Ben Foster to the summit in light of Newcastle United’s defensive injuries that limit Rob Elliot’s budget potential.

Huddersfield Town’s Jonas Lossl is the biggest climber on show after his impressive haul in the shut-out of Crystal Palace.

West Ham’s Joe Hart also experiences a slight climb, despite the Hammers’ Old Trafford drubbing. Their fixtures improve radically very soon, with their prospects gradually improving as each of the first three away matches are ticked off. Hart, at just 4.5, is currently the cheapest secure route into Slaven Bilic’s backline.

In defence, we have chosen to topple Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, with Phil Jones currently offering strong value at just 5.0.

Victor Lindelof is clearly set to be eased into action by Jose Mourinho, so Jones looks destined for a run in the United rearguard – while he remains fit, of course.

He ranks high, though Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand – with his ridiculously favourable early schedule – is elevated to top spot.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac is a climber following his impressive Gameweek 1 debut, while John Stones is our current candidate in Man City’s defence – at least while we can assess how Pep Guardiola intends to rotate at wing-back.

In midfield, we’ve elected to keep faith with Kevin De Bruyne for now, although he is under real threat from the buoyant Mo Salah, along with the Spurs pair Eriksen and Alli, who both recorded returns in Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a climber and gets the nod over Paul Pogba as our weapon of choice in the Man United midfield. The option to double on Jose Mourinho’s attack looks far more favourable following Sunday’s impressive dismantling of West Ham.

Mkhitaryan’s lot is improved by the injury to Wilfried Zaha, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly set to be sidelined for up to four weeks. We await confirmation from Palace, although as it stands, Zaha’s transfer traffic is only heading one way.

A dearth of obvious replacements – with Willian likely to come under threat from a fit-again Eden Hazard – also boosts Mkhitaryan’s prospects.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is another 7.0 option who is yet to establish steady stock. Benched against Leicester City, the Welshman is not assured of his start at Stoke City in Gameweek 2.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his first appearance in our thinking following confirmation of his move to Everton. He enters low thanks to the Toffees’ abhorrent set of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. However, clearly, the Icelander is set to rise up our rankings as those next four encounters are ticked off.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku’s explosive Premier League debut for United saw him leapfrog Harry Kane at the top.

The Spurs striker needs to find a response against Chelsea in Gameweek 2 to hold off the claims of Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus; the Brazilian is preferred to the Sergio Aguero option, despite his blank at the Amex Stadium.

Under this, there are climbs for Roberto Firmino, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette after impressive Gameweek 1 performances.

However, they seem likely to struggle to break into the top three, unless Kane and Jesus continue to falter.

Huddersfield Town’s Steve Mounie is promoted as our budget option of choice, though Burnley’s Sam Vokes also climbs having matched his opening day brace.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Jay Rodriguez and Jermain Defoe are yet to fire, but will have their opportunity to climb in our reckoning following Gameweek 2.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Been burned by training injuries etc in past. Don't like to pull the trigger until absolutely necessary. Still no confirmation on Zaha injury either? If only a week or two, might be inclined to ride it out.

Fair enough. I err the other way from you, especially early on when casuals cause price rises to fly around, but understand the caution. Personally I'd never keep an injured player around, esp one at that price. Can get him back when fit v easily.

Not even that fussed about getting him back, ideally would like another week to see who's doing what before transferring, but then that prices me out of a few options.

Ok, I'll do it, as hate to lose value this early in season, but I'm blaming you if it goes tits up.

I'd go Willian if Chelsea didn't look so poor.
But they did so I'd go Ramsey or else -4 and bring in a premium mid like Mhkitaryan Silva or if you can stretch it Eriksen/Alli

Willian is just another transfer headache waiting to happen with Hazard back in limited training for well over a week now. Otherwise he would be straight in. Would like Mhki, but not willing to take a hit.

Really wanted to save FT but have Zaha and TV has always been an issue for me, loathe to take a drop and don't mind having Mee to come on in his stead. Was sure early in the week I would just shift him straight to Willian and now not so sure, have it between him and Ramsey atm. Any thoughts from the community, looks like I'll need to make a decision this morning.

Forward planning. What would be a good use of my FT? I've £0.5 ITB. Considering KDB > Eriksen or Firmino for a cheaper forward, maybe Mounie to find more money to upgrade elsewhere the week after that. Anyway, where would you look to make changes?

    A) DEF
    B) MID
    C) FOR

    DDG
    Stephens Daws Lowe Kola
    Tadic KDB Willian
    Lukaku Firmino Kane

He was good, but that was mainly because both teams gave up on defending. Watford's fixtures not that great, may be wrong and he could be this season's Capoue early on...but I'd say one game doesn't change much.

Real pack of information having to make that transfer this week must be annoying.

I've seen the discussion and I haven't been too keen on the replacements. Maybe this gameweek or the transfer deadline reveals a value pick or two.

It could be golden (I say through gritted teeth as probably doing the same).

To be fair, Arsenal are looking good and attacking, the spot is his barring injury. It's just fitness, unknown form and... fitness that is at question.

      It's not he worst gamble.

Ramsey could be a lovely pick. I nearly got him (went Mkhi). Ramsey has little risk at that price, not awful fixtures and scores goals when fit - especially in that formation.

Is Marco Asensio really the next best thing or is he just an average player that plays in a good team?

I guess what I'm really asking is, are we just hyping him because we see a couple good goals on youtube or is his overall play impressive? I don't watch alot of madrid play since it's boring to watch a team dominate for the whole game.

    Foster
    Mee, Bertrand, Daniels
    KDB, salah, zaha, Willian
    Lukaku, chicharito, Kane

    Elliot, Carroll, Gamez, Rangel
    --------------------------------

    Who's best replacement for zaha?

Swap Zaha for Ramsey or take a hit and get Jesus & Eriksen for Kane & zaha?

    1. Fanta sea
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 5 months ago

I don't have Kane but I wish I did. I don't quite understand the logic of removing kane. You started the season with Kane because you thought he'd get more goals than Jesus by the end of it. I don't understand why you think one game makes a difference to that assessment. It's not realistic for Kane to score in every game of the season so you knew he's blank during some games of the season. So with that logic, you knew he'd have some danger of blanking on gameweek 1.

Imagine if you had the choice to make a whole new team starting this gameweek, you'd probably put Kane in because you think his chances of scoring is high...just like you thought it was before gameweek 1. Your assessment of Kane hasn't really changed.

Now I'd understand if you wanted to avoid a price drop or avoid missing out on some price rises, but that's not going to happen with Jesus or Eriksen.

Overall, I'd say swap Zaha for someone like Redmond, ramsey or Tadic.

Yep, you're right the blank has just got people reconsidering if all that money is well spent. I don't have him either, so delighted he didn't score, but he will and will serve owners very well. However, there is no harm in taking stock and wondering if your initial decision was correct, especially if new info is suggesting Moreno, Lacazette, Jesus, Aguero etc are all hitting the ground running and you have a plan for the extra money.

If Lukaku doesn't score next week, should we take him out? It doesn't make sense to take out players of their caliber over a couple games.

Maybe a bit early to jump ship on Kane. But at the same time That's a pretty good move to take a hit for.

Wijnaldum for a left of field LFC option
Ramsey should start for Arsenal now that he's fit
      Downgrade to Redmond/Tadic/Mooy/Ritchie/Atsu?

They're the options I looked at. Played it safe and downgraded to Mooy. Can't really lose out because he only costs 5.5 and I free up cash for next week.
