Our Watchlist player rankings – listing would-be mid-term targets – were revised earlier this week following Gameweek 1.

These can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They effectively collate our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

When viewing, it’s important to bear in mind the “rules” at play, particularly when it comes to “coverage”. While Harry Kane sits high in the forward rankings, this can dent the appeal of both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as midfield options. Similarly, if a goalkeeper looks to be the go-to method of covering a defence, this will be reflected in the ranking assigned to their defenders.

As a rule, we try to force ourselves to commit to one player per position per club. However, in some circumstances – when we consider it viable, and maybe even advisable, to double up – two players will be listed.

Right now, with just a single Gameweek to consider, form has not played a major role in the rankings. This will kick in once we have three to four Gameweeks to analyse. However, in some cases – should a striker score a hat-trick for example – we will start reflecting this in the factors shown.

In general, there have been few seismic changes following the opening weekend.

In goal, we’ve promoted West Brom’s Ben Foster to the summit in light of Newcastle United’s defensive injuries that limit Rob Elliot’s budget potential.

Huddersfield Town’s Jonas Lossl is the biggest climber on show after his impressive haul in the shut-out of Crystal Palace.

West Ham’s Joe Hart also experiences a slight climb, despite the Hammers’ Old Trafford drubbing. Their fixtures improve radically very soon, with their prospects gradually improving as each of the first three away matches are ticked off. Hart, at just 4.5, is currently the cheapest secure route into Slaven Bilic’s backline.

In defence, we have chosen to topple Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, with Phil Jones currently offering strong value at just 5.0.

Victor Lindelof is clearly set to be eased into action by Jose Mourinho, so Jones looks destined for a run in the United rearguard – while he remains fit, of course.

He ranks high, though Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand – with his ridiculously favourable early schedule – is elevated to top spot.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac is a climber following his impressive Gameweek 1 debut, while John Stones is our current candidate in Man City’s defence – at least while we can assess how Pep Guardiola intends to rotate at wing-back.

In midfield, we’ve elected to keep faith with Kevin De Bruyne for now, although he is under real threat from the buoyant Mo Salah, along with the Spurs pair Eriksen and Alli, who both recorded returns in Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a climber and gets the nod over Paul Pogba as our weapon of choice in the Man United midfield. The option to double on Jose Mourinho’s attack looks far more favourable following Sunday’s impressive dismantling of West Ham.

Mkhitaryan’s lot is improved by the injury to Wilfried Zaha, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly set to be sidelined for up to four weeks. We await confirmation from Palace, although as it stands, Zaha’s transfer traffic is only heading one way.

A dearth of obvious replacements – with Willian likely to come under threat from a fit-again Eden Hazard – also boosts Mkhitaryan’s prospects.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is another 7.0 option who is yet to establish steady stock. Benched against Leicester City, the Welshman is not assured of his start at Stoke City in Gameweek 2.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his first appearance in our thinking following confirmation of his move to Everton. He enters low thanks to the Toffees’ abhorrent set of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. However, clearly, the Icelander is set to rise up our rankings as those next four encounters are ticked off.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku’s explosive Premier League debut for United saw him leapfrog Harry Kane at the top.

The Spurs striker needs to find a response against Chelsea in Gameweek 2 to hold off the claims of Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus; the Brazilian is preferred to the Sergio Aguero option, despite his blank at the Amex Stadium.

Under this, there are climbs for Roberto Firmino, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette after impressive Gameweek 1 performances.

However, they seem likely to struggle to break into the top three, unless Kane and Jesus continue to falter.

Huddersfield Town’s Steve Mounie is promoted as our budget option of choice, though Burnley’s Sam Vokes also climbs having matched his opening day brace.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Jay Rodriguez and Jermain Defoe are yet to fire, but will have their opportunity to climb in our reckoning following Gameweek 2.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Who are you assessing this upcoming gameweek?

For me, the first lot will be the Southampton midfielders. JWP is on set pieces and comes in as the cheapest of the bunch, however his points scoring record isn't as strong as some of the other contenders. Redmond scored well last season for periods but also disappointed on a number of occasions. For the same price, Tadic offers the promise of steady points and whilst he did have an explosive week (GW11?) a couple of years back, he's not likely to repeat that despite Saints strong fixtures. It's likely one of these will come in for Iwobi, who is hanging on a fine thread.

Should Southampton look lacklustre once again then attention will be turned towards a plethora of options in the 7.0-8.0M bracket. Ramsey is a popular pick around here but security of starts and injuries may be an issue. Step up by a million and that's where I'll really be looking. Both Pogba and the FOTM Mhkitaryan could be great FPL assets, but it remains to be seen if their initial form can be carried on and what threat the Armenian faces from the likes of Martial, Rashford, Mata, Lingard etc. for United's attacking spots. Finally, someone who hasn't been picked up on by most around here is a certain FFS golden-boy, who too is priced at 8.0, and might offer better value than his more expensive counterpart KDB.

It will also offer another week to assess the striker situation, with almost all the big boys firing (and those who didn't being unlucky to miss out) as well as a handful of unknown quantities who surprised and have shown promise.

I'll be assessing Huddersfield - do they really have assets worth investing in, or did a woeful Palace merely make them look good?

    2. Fanta sea

Soton were not that bad, they just didn't finish their chances. They have great fixtures and I'm sure they'll get goals. I think Redmond will be the key acquisition whereas Tadic seems more like a passer than a scorer.

I'll be looking to see if Ramsey starts also. I don't think Pogba will be a great fantasy shout and mkhi would be great if it wasn't for Jose. He could chop mkhi at any time and I have to mention mkhi's lack of evidence for his consistency.

I'll have to see whether Silva keeps to a advanced role but I don't see much hope in that. I can also see him being subbed off unlike KDB.

The players I'm looking out for would be Siggy, Holebas and Firmino.

Silva is playing in a different role this year and that is pushing KDB back further. Hence KDB is the assister of the assister.

I'll be watching Chelsea. They might need a meltdown before they find their steel. Will they have a better attitude with 11 on the pitch? Shades of post-champion LCFC.

I'll be watching for promise from the promoted teams. Mooy, Ritchie, Ince, Mounie, etc.

And I'll be waiting to see Iwobi in midfield.

Liverpool and Tottenham and KDB for me. Have KDB, no Salah or Mane, have Alli no Kane hence could be interested in Eriksen too.

Still not 100% on Liverpool consistency or Salah's ability to be clinical. But if KDB stalls again and Salah scores points against Palace....

      JWP

Ritchie was poor last week and Huddersfield look like they might have some defensive strength.

JWP on the other hand is on set pieces and Hart looked a bit shakey. If he isn't able to command the box on corners and free kicks, it could open up a lot of space and open the opportunity for some goals/assists.

£80 minimum in the current climate

Eriksen won't move though + he doesn't do CM as good as Coutinho can. That CM and RLF is what cout gives you and slightly younger too

Watched Barca try a 352 tonight and they were clueless. Dismal performance. They swapped it up in the second half but they seriously need Dembele and Cout in there for something special and pace

Depends who for, but likely yes.

Genuinely think it's looking likely that he will stay, but if he does refuse to play then that's going to be an issue right there.

Even if he does stay and he continues to play, his head won't be in the right place and he won't be the player he once was. Salah, Mane and Firmino should all outscore him this season, but those could be famous last words.

Getting rid of Willian is a waste of a transfer right now.

Ok, what would you do: I captained Jesus GW1 which failed and most in my league captained Lukaku....

Do I captain Lukaku this week (as 99% will be doing) or go for a differential to try catch up? Other candidates for captaincy this week are Kane, Mane, Jesus....

Do you think Lukaku will do well?

Swansea away. Swansea conceded more than 20 shots against Southampton. United could put 4-5 in.....

Then again, it's away so anything can happen.

Even though he looked fantastic and played in a more advanced positino vs. Huddersfield he offered no threat and very very little creativity.

      One for the bench imo

I know Liverpool's defence is poor but I can't see Palace scoring at Anfield. They couldn't score last week at home to a newly promoted team...And now Zaha is out.

Speaking of FPL draft, I have Knockhaert and Fabregas I'd like to transfer.

Can I do two transfers or just one per week?

So Fabregas > Mooy or Willian?

I just hit the "Sign" button right?

Unlimited transfers. Priority will be given to the lowest ranked team.
You can choose more than one more to transfer for Knockhaert and Fab and ranked the priority of transfers

Ok so I have this currently...

      1. Mooy in for Fabregas
      2. Willian in for Fabregas
      3. Mounie in for Gayle
      4. Davies in for Cedric

So... is there a chance they'll all go through or just the first one?

Feeling pretty good with Zaha -> Mooy. It leaves 1.5m in the bank to hopefully use with 2ft come international break when we have more info and stats.
