Something’s got to give this Gameweek. Someone’s going to be wrong.

Nearly 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers have ditched Harry Kane since the weekend, but our Scouts are sticking by him.

The Spurs striker has one last chance to break his August hoodoo when Burnley come to Wembley on Sunday. You suspect the combined expertise of our Fantasy Football Scout regulars and current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg might not be so forgiving again should he blank for the third successive match.

Marcos Alonso’s double against Spurs means he’s also popular, while Crystal Palace assets in defence and attack are feeling the love despite the zero points that Frank de Boer’s men have thus far returned this season.

The visit of shot-shy Swansea City to Selhurst Park is the reason for that, but more predictable big guns – Chrisitan Eriksen and Henrikh Mkhitaryan among them – dominate our Scouts’ thoughts in midfield.

Here are the initial opinions of our selection panel.

Paul says…

I was intending to favour Watford’s left flank at home to Brighton, with both Jose Holebas and Richarlison likely to trouble the visitors’ veterans right-back, Bruno.

Both produced four key passes in the win at Bournemouth, while the Brazilian’s total of eight shots in the box is top for midfielders after two Gameweeks.

But Holebas’ dismissal in the Carabao Cup puts paid to that, although the in-form Richarlison remains in my plans.

Pep Guardiola’s decision to haul off Gabriel Jesus at the break against Everton has me second-guessing Man City’s side for their visit to Bournemouth. David Silva’s budget-friendly 8.0 price tag brings him into contention, having created more chances than any team-mate so far.

I’m keeping faith with Harry Kane. Number one forward for shots and efforts in the box, he hosts a Burnley outfit that placed second-bottom for attempts conceded in the penalty area last term.

Christian Benteke could also be in profit at home to a Swansea City side that sits bottom for shots conceded in the box and big chances against. No forward has registered more big chances than the Palace striker, despite his failure to find the net.

Peter says…

The boringly predictable Romelu Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have served me well in both the Scout Picks and my own squad since Gameweek One, even if points have tended to come late on in matches. There are compelling arguments in favour of Paul Pogba and even Anthony Martial, but I’m staying loyal to my original pairing. For now.

By contrast, my faith in Bournemouth’s assets is rapidly failing. I know that Manchester City failed to impress on Monday night, but I think they’ll bounce back against a Cherries side which lacks the confidence or defensive stability which Everton showed in abundance. While I feel reports of Kevin De Bruyne’s demise have been greatly exaggerated, I’m going for the cheaper and less hairy option of David Silva.

As highlighted in recent articles, Harry Kane’s August hoodoo conceals the fact that he has fired off 14 attempts on goal, eleven in the box and four on target.

Burnley have been fairly miserly in terms of shots conceded in the box, but my view of the phrase ‘class is permanent’ means Kane can’t go three games without a blank, so I’m holding on come hell or high water.

On the other hand, Christian Eriksen has been delivering his usual regular assists, while promising some goal threat himself, and he too retains his position in my squad, along with team-mate Ben Davies.

Brighton have conceded more big chances (six) than anyone bar Swansea, while Watford – perhaps surprisingly – lie fifth for shots on target, so bringing in Richarlison seems an easy shout.

The Seagulls may also struggle to find their first goal of the season against the Hornets, so Miguel Britos fills another cheap slot. Overall, it’s an interesting week in terms of fixtures and quite a few low to mid-range assets could top the weekly points by 6pm on Sunday.

Jonty says…

Spurs’ clash with Burnley on Sunday is dominating my selection.

Given that the Clarets only managed 13 goals on the road last season, I’m backing clean sheet points for my top defender pick Ben Davies. He also gets my vote after registering more corners than Christian Eriksen so far this campaign.

Speaking of the Dane, he is my top midfielder this week after assisting all three of Spurs goals so far. With Burnley failing to keep a clean sheet to this point – and only mustering four shut-outs on the road last season – this looks an ideal fixture for him.

One of the reasons I’ve shunned Kevin De Bruyne for the trip to Bournemouth is that I think Eriksen offers the chance of more points this week and beyond, for 0.5 less.

However, I’d still like to see Manchester City attacking coverage, so have nominated David Silva for inclusion. In a free central midfield role, he has created nine chances so far – the same as Manchester United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan and only one less than the league’s most creative player, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil.

Harry Kane has to be my top striker for this set of fixtures, despite his failure to score against Newcastle and Chelsea this season, or indeed ever in the Premier League during August. With the goals imminent table in hand, I’ll be referring to his 14 goal attempts over that period – more than any other player so far – to back him as the first name on the Scout Picks’ teamsheet.

Elsewhere, West Ham’s trip to Newcastle appeals as the Hammers look to capitalise on a strong attacking display in their 3-2 loss away to Southampton. Michail Antonio is perhaps slightly over priced at 7.5 but I think, given his four shots and lowly 0.3% ownership, he could reward those who draft him in.

However, I concede that a Spot the Differential article place may be more fitting for him, particularly as his team-mate Javier Hernandez (7.1) has a kinder price tag and heads into the weekend off a St Mary’s brace.

Mark says…

I’ve tried desperately not to give in to knee-jerk tendencies, keeping faith with some names that – so far this week – have been labelled as disposable by some.

To an extent, that begins in defence where I’m taking a risk on Kieran Trippier.

I want to cover Spurs’ rearguard against Burnley and, while Ben Davies clearly has merits, I can’t dismiss Trippier’s qualities as a provider of goals. Five assists from six starts last season demonstrated his talents and, if he’s passed fit for Gameweek 3 as I expect, then he has to be in the Picks.

In attacking areas, I’m refusing to give up on Manchester City just yet.

I’ve retained both Kevin De Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus. The trip to Bournemouth looks to be the ideal fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side to make a statement – only Swansea have allowed more chances than the Cherries so far this season.

An early breakthrough for City will bring Bournemouth on to them, and I can see their attack picking them off with three or four goals. De Bruyne and Jesus remain the star attractions for me – despite back-to-back blanks.

But the Spurs attack also has to be covered. Both Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane look essential, but hopefully, with the likes of Matt Phillips and Andre Gray in my squad, I’ve put forward some value options to help balance the budget come Friday.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be Malcolm Tucker for England manager. This is his ninth season, with 2013/14’s finish of 8,086 his best yet.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2016/17 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last Gameweek’s champion Urchin beat the Scouts 34 to 23 and is now the manager to beat in the race for the £100 prize.

I don't know if this is a stupid question but I am a seagull after all.

I could be way off, but does the whole point of the 'False 9' formation and strategy revolve around the concept that a midfield player takes up the number 9 role in a more fluid and freer way than a more big target man striker traditionally would?

So it's more about a midfield type in that role dropping deeper to link attack for fluidly with the midfield and attack in unison, rather than a traditional number 9 providing a target and holding up play whilst his midfield arrive from deeper positions?

Can someone explain this to me as I don't think a fully understand the concept?

I understand Barca mastered the concept with Messi but Messi probably could have played RB at that time in that team and still had the effect they did.

My question relates more to the mechanics of the strategy and how it applies for teams who use it now and don't have a player of Messi's calibre to execute it.

Maybe a complex question more suited to those who actually understand the concept rather than just knowing that Barca and Messi mastered it.

        No offense. 🙂

That's my point though. Does the strategy actually rely on the fact that a midfield player plays as the false 9, or could an actual no. 9 still play that role? I hope that makes sense?

no, any player could still play that role

Effectively you'll have for example maybe 3 players up front, one on the right wing, one on left and one central. Now these positions aren't fixed and they are free to move about on the front line but it's that central player (the false no.9) who will stay predominantly in the middle. That's the simplest i can explain it tbh without writing too much

You could still have a no.9 as a false no.9 but if you have a striker on the pitch why would you not just play him striker? The idea of having a midfielder who is the complete package so to say maximises the potential of the false no.9 formation as he is able to play on wings, make good passes and finish chances - that's why messi was so good at it. Hope this helps.

            Great answer, thanks.

Your comment: "You could still have a no.9 as a false no.9 but if you have a striker on the pitch why would you not just play him striker?"

This is what I was alluding to. So the whole concept of the false 9 strategy is maximised by having a more well rounded midfield type player in that false 9 role rather than an actual no. 9, otherwise as you said, it would just be a more traditional formation with the striker playing as the no. 9.

The reason I asked all this is because of Firmino.

So it's a well known fact that Liverpool have adopted this false 9 formation with Firmino, a midfield player, playing as the false 9. Last season he was correctly listed as a mid, but season listed as a striker.

So why? With all the information available regarding Liverpool's use of this false 9 strategy last season and Firmino almost being locked as that false 9 midfielder, why the hell wasn't he listed as a midfielder again? I don't get it.

I reckon with firmino, the thinking up in fpl towers is that as he's playing the false no.9, although technically not a striker you won't see him falling back into midfield as deep as he used to sometimes. Theoretically in that postion he'll get more goals especially being on pens and he has been given the no.9 shirt at liverpool. having said that i'm not 100% certain how or why they made that decision.

I saw people claim Alli should be a striker if firmino and king have both been made strikers. But with Alli he plays a much bigger role in midfield than firmino and king right now.

Agree with your reasoning, but just one small thing. As of when the position change was announced, there was absolutely nothing to indicate that Firmino would be on pens. Back then, it was basically nailed onto Milner.

"A False 9 is a decoy centre forward in a side deliberately set up without a dedicated striker. Instead of playing as the furthest man forward in his team's set-up, the False 9 is a lone forward employed to drop deeper, back into midfield at every opportunity."

In fpl terms, if a team plays with a false nine they most often have rw and lw players in their formation (unless you are parking the bus, or your name is Tony Pulis). These wing players will benefit the most from the team playing with the false nine, as they will play higher up the pitch, as well as making more runs towards the box. Hence, they will produce more shots, and chances for other teammates. They will be more involved in the attacking play, resulting in more points. Assuming, of course, that the system works, as with Mane and Salah in LIV.

Now, depending on the formation, there could be other players aldo benefitting. A few sides will also play with wing backs and false nines. When the false nine drops to midfield, a defensive midfielder will fall to the central defence. In this system the wing backs will operate as midfielders, or even as wingers. So far I only remember MCI and CHE playing this from the go, as well as ARS and TOT when they were chasing to score.

      Hope this helped. Good luck!

The false 9 at Liverpool has Firmino dropping slightly deeper with Mane and Salah pushing further forward, could argue that it improves them as options over the player listed as the striker.

The term was first coined by Michael Cox back in about 2008 to describe the system Roma were playing at the time with Totti in the no. 9 position. This was then used to describe the great barca and united teams of the time too as they adapted the system. If you want to know more about the history of the position I suggest the excellent books by Michael cox - "the mixer" and by Jonathan Wilson. - "inverting the pyramid" which both talk about changing football tactics over time. Fascinating stuff!

Here's an article written by Cox specifically about the false 9 position and Firmino though!

As I understand it, the key aim of playing with a false #9 is to exploit different attacking areas to the more classic approach. The first of these is the gap between the midfield and defence.

When the false #9 drifts into that space, the CBs don't have anyone to mark. They are faced with either having to follow the false #9 into that territory (which pulls the defence out of shape and creates gaps for the wide forwards to run into) or to pass them on to their CDM, creating an extra problem in the midfield where the false #9 team will now likely have an overload.

The second area the false #9 system seeks to exploit is the space in forward wide areas. These often offer 1-1 opportunities anyway and when the opposition plays with wingbacks that can be even more so. The wide forwards are often able to receive the ball unchallenged in quite advanced positions if the ball is moved quickly and are in a position to cut inside and attack the goal. That's where the fashion for opposite-footed widemen comes from. Exactly what Liverpool are doing with a right footer (Mané) playing wide left and a left-footer (Salah) wide right. Their role is to score goals rather than providing goals for a centre forward.

Whilst a mobile, energetic player (like Firmino) is very well cut out to play false #9, what it most requires is cleverness and game understanding. Zlatan (who you'd hardly call mobile and energetic) actually played like a false #9 in some games last season against opponents with wingbacks or pushed-on fullbacks. Mourinho's plan was to hamper the wingbacks by having two fast wide forwards always attacking the space behind them. Zlatan drifted quite deep in those games but of course he has the class and vision to compensate for his (relative) lack of pace.

This is one way a 4-3-3 team like Liverpool can challenge a 3-4-3/3-5-2 team successfully. Another is to match the opponent's formation but that can lead to big problems if you don't have the personnel for it (as Everton found at Chelsea last season).

That's how I understand it anyway.

Very well explained. One of the most importaint things in a false 9 is that marking becomes difficult for opposition CBs cause hes going deeper then his wingers.

Although I guess it was more of a case in the past, when false 9 was something new and unexpected. These days good managers have ways to deal with this strategy.

People getting waaaaaaaay too carried away with United around here.

They've played a depleted West Ham side and a Swansea that look like a shoe-in for relegation this season - and it ended up being a flattering scoreline in that match. Probably the easiest 2 opening fixtures they could have wished for.

Leicester have weapons to hurt any team. After that it's Stoke, Everton, Southampton... tricky games they could grind out decent results against but the idea of going ham on 3 United assets seems very optimistic to me.

Leicester who like the pacey high counter and pressing attack offering United far more room to launch their own counters than Swansea did.

Stoke who are quite impossible to predict I've found. Could be a lock out, could be a rout.

Everton are a good side, toughest game of the lot (although they gave City a ridiculous amount of chances even when they had the man advantage).

Southampton kept a cleanie against Swansea, a side as you said are relegation candidates. Come up against West Ham, who go a man down, and still concede two defensively dreadful goals.

Not that I'm advocating an attacking triple up, but a mid + Lukaku isn't overkill. I happen to have DDG as my GK seeing as they'll keep plenty of cleanies and he was an easy fire and forget choice.

As a United fan I love it 😉

I could see Everton as a sticking point, or at least I did but in all truth they looked poor on MNF against City. Even with the man advantage, they seemed determined to park the bus and let City pummel them. I definitely agree the actual quality of the teams they face will be higher (feeling a little less confident in a few of DDGs cleanies) but maybe what will benefit United is more space to attack? Swansea honestly camped in their box for 70 minutes, even while they were 1-0 down. As soon as they opened up, United put another 3 past them. I don't think any of the upcoming teams will defend like that barring maybe Stoke? The others have better quality defenders as opposed to 11 men crammed in the box. That space might suit United a bit more.

Hard to call, I don't begrudge anyone lumping on them given how early in the season it is and the lack of any real info/form. Likewise, I think your point is entirely fair.

Swansea being poor at defending is nonsense. 26 goals conceded in 20 matches post Bradley. 3 CS in the last 3 games of the pre-season. 5 CS and 8 GC in the last 10 PL games. That was the stats before Man Utd played them. Man Utd is by far the most deadly team I've seen face Clement's side.

A lot of teams will struggle against Man Utd this season, especially when they are 1-0 down. Man Utd has added a dimension to their game that wasn't there last season. They will kill off games on the counter.

They gave up about 30 chances vs Southampton, about half a dozen of which were legit goal scoring opportunities.
