The Manchester clubs are united in tormenting Fantasy Football managers.

In fairness, we should have expected Pep Guardiola’s City teamsheet to prove a source of frustration. It should come as no real surprise.

Even so, he seems determined to baffle us.

Having withdrawn Gabriel Jesus at half-time on Monday night following Kyle Walker’s dismissal, it appeared to signal that Guardiola’s affections were leaning towards Sergio Aguero for the lone striker role.

But just six days later, it was Aguero who made way as the City manager shuffled his formation and personnel in a bid to solve the frustration of Monday’s misses.

Aguero travelled to the Vitality Stadium today on the back of seven goals in his last seven away trips. He was backed by over 265,000 (5.7%) Fantasy Premier League managers with the captaincy.

Inevitably, Jesus took his opportunity to justify his selection. He served up his first goal of the season at Bournemouth having been sold by over 119,000 managers, triggering a 0.1 drop in price.

To make matters worse Aguero, along with today’s other omission from Monday’s teamsheet – John Stones – were both introduced from the bench by Guardiola. Auto-subs and Vice Captains were nullified.

City’s formation change – a move to 4-3-3 – also saw Kevin De Bruyne retreated alongside David Silva and Fernandinho as part of a central three.

That role muted his goal threat and again left him probing around the fringes of City’s 2-1 victory.

Statistically, the Belgian was still the most creative player in Gameweek 3 so far, providing four chances and laying on a big chance for Nicolas Otemendi who struck the post.

But those brief flashes will be lost on his Fantasy owners. They will continue to plot the exit of a 10.0 priced asset that has delivered three successive blanks. De Bruyne has already been sold more than any other player since the passing of today’s deadline.

As for United, while they engineered a 2-0 victory over a stubborn Leicester City at Old Trafford, Fantasy managers were left smarting by Romelu Lukaku’s penalty miss.

It remains to be seen if this dents Lukaku’s stock. There will be an ongoing debate on whether he will retain spot-kicks and whether Paul Pogba could be the beneficiary in waiting.

But for now, we can only consider what comes next in this current Gameweek.

Captained by over 1.7 million (37.3%) FPL managers, Lukaku’s zero point return sat alongside Aguero’s failing and a first blank from Pogba to set up Sunday’s performers.

Spurs’ Harry Kane now heads into a Wembley date with Burnley sporting over 741,000 armbands. Some 53% of his 1.3 million owners have trusted him as their skipper.

Confidence in Kane has been dented following his two single point returns, but now the scene is set for him to deliver the season’s first major twist.

A double-figure tally would cause a significant swing. Couple that with an impressive performance from Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and it would represent a turning point that could spark transfer hits and Wildcards aplenty.

While Saturday disappointed, it means that Sunday could be huge for all kinds of reasons.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Bellerin has 4 more penalty area touches than Alonso so far, although not as many shots.

More to come with the fixtures?

    1. F4L

depends if he can nail down a spot in the first xi

Comparing any defender with Alonso is mistaken. He's an unique case.

A lot of people misled themselves about "wingbacks" pre-season, basically because they equated Alonso's success last season with his position. But there are specifics with Alonso that don't apply to anyone else.

      1. Hairy Potter

Totally agree. Someone like Walker doesn't suddenly become a better crosser or get more assists simply because he plays alongside 3 centre backs rather than 2.

Not saying Bellerin does either was just pointing out that he must be getting forward quite a bit which is nice.

Not expecting him to "do an Alonso", not by any stretch.

But fixtures are decent, I can foresee some clean sheets and if you chuck in some attacking returns it could be a nice punt. £6m is a lot though for a punt in defence

I really really want Bellerin to be good but he seems to have taken a step back in the last season and a bit.

I'm not sure if it's the new formation, although I would've thought a wing back role would suit him more to be honest.

I guess he's been shifted to the left which hasn't helped either but I think Kolasinac will nail that spot down sooner or later which then leaves him fighting The Ox for that spot and he seems to be Wengers favourite at this point in time.

All in all I just don't trust Bellerin at that price at this moment. If The Ox does go to Chelsea then I'd be very tempted by him however.

    4. Danno - Emre Canada
      • 11 Years

Yeah I think so, depending on how Wenger sets up with changes

    5. TallestJohn

      9 years, 22 days ago

Wenger has just lost it entirely (again) and Bellerin looks worse than he did two years ago for some reason. Surprisingly he doesn't look that good as a wingback; being an overlapping RB (added protection on the wing?) suits him more.

If Ox leaves we don't really have any other suitable options at RWB but I don't have a clue what AW has planned as we're willing to let Mustafi go in addition to Gabriel. Maybe reverting to the boring 4-2-3-1?

Either way Kolasinac should continue to settle in and looks a safer pick.

Does anyone think there's a £7m or lower striker worth bringing in?

Tempted to shift to 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 and get rid of Gabbiadini.

Rooney and Firmino are the only ones I'd really look at but I'd need to get money from elsewhere.

I've always liked 3-5-2. On it atm

Are there budget midfielders that have proven themselves? Too early to say. I don't expect budget strikers to give returns every week. I'd rather transfer in/out Gabbi, Mounie, Chicharito based on form/fixtures.

Abraham finally got off the mark today after some close misses in the first two games. Worth a look with some kind fixtures ahead (Spurs game aside)
However, there is the issue of uncertainty regarding who will be dropped when Llorente is fit. Something to monitor

Just worry about Swansea's ability to attack but yeah, nice that he got off the mark today.

3rd forward is always a pain for me too and this season certain defs are killing it. Tempted by 442.

Contemplated 352 with Calvert Lewin. Unfortunately the idea of having a 5.0 bench puts me off, just not as efficient as having Tcarroll in a 343.

442 can work, Alonso may outdo Gabbi

No standout option for 3rd forward yet IMO, but I'm watching Gray Mounie, Jrod

Not much there. Really tempted to downgrade to Calvert-Lewin and use the funds elsewhere.

Looked like intention to injure. Knockeart might've saw it coming, based on how he moved his body and shifted his weight just before the impact. Very fortunate it didn't catch his planted leg, as a tackle like that is how you break someone's leg

1 assist i 3 games, playing for a terrible team. Decent player but really don´t trust this Swansea team.

Just realised my entire playing XI for next GW are playing away from home! 14 of 15 of the squad are playing away too!

Didn't realise this until just then
