Eden Hazard’s recovery from injury moves up a gear with a scoring return for Belgium, while Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino gets the night off but his (current) club-mate Philippe Coutinho features and is among the goals in Brazil.

Here are the notes from the international break’s first night of action.

Hazard steps up recovery

Depending on which newspaper you read, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez’s decision to pick Eden Hazard against Gibraltar was either a blessing or a disaster for Chelsea.

The midfield star is nearing full fitness following an ankle injury and, having come through a run-out for Chelsea’s U23 side, an international start was the logical next step for some, a step too soon for others.

In the end, it was a positive step for the player himself, who captained the side and contributed a goal and an assist in a 77-minute appearance.

Romelu Lukaku scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, while Kevin De Bruyne provided an assist in a 9-0 romp that means Belgium can confirm their World Cup qualification with a win in Greece on Sunday evening.

How involved Hazard is in that rather more testing match remains to be seen, but Chelsea manager Antonio Conte spoke this week of the need to ease his player back into domestic duties. Meanwhile Hazard himself stated post-match that he felt ready to play his part against the Greeks

“I’m happy that I’m back on the pitch. I feel good. I think I’m ready for Greece, but the coach will decideâ€

Chelsea travel to Leicester City in Gameweek 4 before facing tough home matches with Arsenal and Man City prior to the second international break at the end of September.

That schedule – and the likelihood he will be eased back into Premier League action – will probably dampen short-term interest in Hazard (10.5), who is still owned by 1.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers despite his summer-long injury lay-off.

A rather more welcoming set of fixtures starts in Gameweek 8 with a trip to Crystal Palace, which would seem to be the more logical time to be considering Hazard for our Fantasy teams.

The Belgian side was packed with Premier League talent. Joining Hazard, Lukaku and De Bruyne were Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Man City centre-back Vincent Kompany and Spurs defenders Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, with team-mate Mousa Dembele introduced at half-time.

Firmino gets a rest, Coutinho gets a game

Only two FPL forwards currently enjoy higher ownership than Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, with 28.7% buying into the budget charms of West Ham’s Javier Hernandez and a massive 58.2% backing Man United’s Lukaku.

The 27.5% who own Firmino will have been happy to see their man remain on the bench as Brazil eased to a 2-0 win over Ecuador in which team-mate Philippe Coutinho scored the second goal.

The midfielder has been sidelined at Anfield, supposedly with a back injury, but was fit enough to enter the fray in the second half and then get on the scoresheet from a Gabriel Jesus assist.

While Coutinho has played no part in Liverpool’s season as his potential move to Barcelona rumbles on all the way through to tonight’s closure of the Spanish transfer window, Firmino has been an ever-present.

And after five straight starts for the Reds, from which he’s produced three goals and as many assists, his FPL ownership base might have feared a touch of early-season burn-out should he have figured prominently against both Ecuador and on Tuesday away at Colombia.

But with Brazil’s World Cup qualification already assured, national coach Tite has the luxury of being able to tinker with his team and rest key members of his squad while he’s about it.

Liverpool return to domestic action with a Gameweek 4 trip to Man City. They will also travel to Leicester and Newcastle and entertain Burnley before October’s international break.

Firmino looks likely to be relatively fresh for that run, although rotation looks inevitable when you also factor in Liverpool’s two Champions League fixtures in September.

The Reds host Sevilla between Gameweeks 4 and 5, while Gameweeks 6 and 7 sandwich a trip to Spartak Moscow.

Chelsea winger Willian did feature against Ecuador, setting up the first goal and playing 84 minutes, while Man City pair Fernandinho and Ederson were unused subs.

Elsewhere…

Alexis Sanchez’s day was worsened by Chile’s humbling 3-0 home defeat to Paraguay. The still-Arsenal man played the full 90 minutes and will now aim to recover ahead of a clash in Bolivia on Tuesday, before a return for the Gunners’ Gameweek 4 meeting with Bournemouth.

Huddersfield’s Australian international Aaron Mooy – owned by 11.6% – missed the 2-0 defeat in Japan through illness, but will hope to feature in the Socceroos’ vital World Cup qualifier on Tuesday against Thailand.

Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac set up Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second goal in Cyprus but ended up on the losing side in a 3-2 thriller, while his club-mate Olivier Giroud provided an assist for France as Les Bleus strolled past Holland 4-0. Fellow Gunner Alexandre Lacazette was given a 10-minute run-out from the bench.

For Holland, Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt and Crystal Palace’s Timothy Fosu-Mensah earned 90 minutes, with the latter making an impressive international debut.

Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva earned an assist in a 90-minute appearance as Portugal ran out 5-1 winners over the Faroe Islands.

Finally, Stoke City midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri was also among the assists as Switzerland laboured to a 3-0 win over the not-so mighty Andorra.

      it looks like it, Bakayoko and Drinkwater seems more suited to play there in terms of defensive shields, otherwise Conte´s team-set up will suffer too much defense wise. fabregas is offering much more offensively but mostly vs smaller teams who park the bus. For me he is nr 2, behind Bakayoko although the latter looked totally lost in the game vs Spurs. He is a beast but i questions his abilities on the ball, looks very sloppy and reckless

        Baka was class on the ball in his cameo against Everton though. I'd put it down to lack of fitness against Spurs

          Yeah, Bakayoko just looked knackered against Spurs.

          I think Fab will get plenty of points starting and off the bench, but I'm looking to ship soon given the rotation risk.

    Repost, end of last article ðŸ™

    Challenge for you all! How to get Kolasinac into this team without losing Ben Davies.
    Begovic (4.5) - Elliot (4.0)
    Naughton (4.5) - Davies (5.6) - Bertrand - (5.5) - Mee (4.5) - Mbemba (4.0)
    Ramsey (7.0) - Pogba (8.2) - Salah (9.0) - Brady (5.5) - Carroll (4.5)
    Kane (12.5) - Firmino (8.6) - Lukaku (11.6)

            I did think about doing similar with Kane - selling him now, and then getting him back in if he drops, than I could just do a straight swap for Bertrand.

    Morning gents

    Increasing number of fires to put out in my squad has forced the WC (Hegazi / Stephens / Carrol / JWP / RLC / Jesus)

    How's it looking. Have taken Kane out for Morata until his price drops to get him back in 0.1 cheaper.

    Foster
    Jones Cedric Naughton
    Alli Salah Pogba Atsu
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    Elliot Mbemba Chalobah 4.0

    The bench is risky but for me it's worth it to squeeze in that midfield and attack.

    0.4 in bank so hoping a nailed on defender comes available at 4.4 for my bench before deadline.

    1. OldBenKenobi
      • 9 Years

      Ive pretty much same team currently except:

      Alli > Eriksen
      Pogba > Mkhi
      Chalobah > Carroll
      4.0 > Mee

      1. Deece
        • 14 Years

        Nice. I need to find a way to get that extra 4.5 defender. Is that a WC team ?

        1. OldBenKenobi
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

          it is but mostly updated my defence and bench and put salah in midfield. the rest was already there

          WC was:

          PVA> Jones
          Alonso > Cedric
          Stephens>Naughton
          Goldson>Mbemba
          Lowe>Mee
          Richarlison>Salah

          1. Deece
            • 14 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

            Similar to me. Shuffling my defence to get Alli in as a 3rd 'big hitter' in midfield.

            Feel it's justified now as I would have been priced out next week by the looks of things

    2. OldBenKenobi
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

      also I prob would have held Hegazi especially if you got him initially for 4.5

      1. Deece
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

        Yeah I'm actually still holding him for that final price rise. Then cashing out at 4.7m for Naughton.

        I'm assuming that in my 0.4m in bank.

        My one week punt last week on Firmino -> Jesus backfired. Cost me 0.2m on the firm rise and Jesus fall in price

      I like the line-up but that bench would make me nervous.

      Atsu could easily get rotated shortly for Murphy, it's a matter of time before Mbemba is dropped and the 4.0 won't play. I'd go for Wimmer instead of 4.0 personally.

      Jonty reckons competition and experience plus cup matches, Ryan no. 1 but now has some pressure

      Since his knee injury in 2015 he has barely played so don't let his past deceive you. He wasn't even first choice in 6 months for AZ. I doubt he will play unless Ryan makes a few more blunders so would avoid.

      SInce there are scoring options under the 10.5m midfield mark I've gone for Morata up front as a cheaper scoring forward

      Hugely risky I'd say. I don't think he gets a start for at least a couple of Gameweeks.

        Thanks guys, Mark do you think Abraham is more or less nailed in that team?

        Tempted to get Abraham with a spare 0.5 and uprgade if he gets dropped for Bony

    Hello guys. Do you think I'm good to go for GW4? No free transfer left and problem areas in team are Fraser, Willian and Stephens who possibly are no more assured starters.

    Foster
    Davies, Stephens, Jones
    Willian, Eriksen, Mkhitaryan, Carroll
    Lukaku, Kane, Firmino

    Subs: Elliott --- Suttner, Fraser, Long --- 0.4 ITB, 0 FT

    A) Stick
    B) Fraser -> Atsu (-4)
    C) Willian -> Tadic (-4)

      Stick for now - none of those are worth a hit just yet.

        0.8 difference? I have Mane anyway, have 1.0 itb but currently thinking Danilo > 4.5 and Willian > Coutinho next week for the Liverpool triple with Firmino, but we'll see.

      Nope. Firmino is better value.

      Price is tempting but will he be a better option than Mane, Salah or Fimino? I doubt anyone is opting for 3 of those and if you were to choose 2, Coutinho would only make it into my team if I was desperate for an upgrade elsewhere with that money.

    Foster (Eliott)
    Stephens - Daniels - Kolasinac (TAA - Long)
    Alli - KDB - Knockaert - T Carroll (Carrick)
    Firm - Kaku - Kane
    1 FT 0 ITB

    What's the thought guys?
    a)WC
    b) Take a 4 pointer for KDB & TAA --> Salah & Jones

    Danilo and Willian
    to
    Clark/Lascelles and Pogba/Mhikitaryan

    Danilo and Willian both not guaranteed football. Is it worth the -4?

    1) Kane - Mikhi/Pogba
    2) Lukakau - Eriksen/Ali

    Choosing the mid I hope to have a bit more info on when the time comes.

    City and Pep have no more excuses, best squad of any team by some distance. League win and CL semi has to be the minimum target with that spending

    In: Benjamin Mendy Monaco £52m;
    Kyle Walker Tottenham Hotspur £50m;
    Bernardo Silva Monaco £43.6m;
    Ederson Benfica £34.9m;
    Danilo Real Madrid £26.5m;
    Douglas Luiz Vasco de Gama £10m;
    Larry Kayode Austria Vienna £3.5m

    Morning chaps, first time poster.

    Been a lurker since the summer after discovering the website and loving all the helpful information. May have researched too much as I've done the classic case of overthinking and now on WC after a 2.5m rank. Nightmare!

    Anyway.....

    Dawson + Pogba or Evans + Sigurdsson?

    Am on the former but doubtful Pogba can maintain this form and Dawson may switch back to RB; where he doesn't prosper. I have Lukaku if that makes any difference.

    Cheers.

      Still think D+P. Wait for Siggy's fixtures to turn, and for Evans to actually start playing 🙂
