With just five days remaining until domestic action resumes, we’re launching our Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 4.

Poor form or tricky fixtures for many of this season’s previous front-runners make this potentially the most open Captain Poll of the season so far.

That’s certainly the case for Liverpool’s front three Roberto Firmino (8.6), Mo Salah (9.0) and Sadio Mane (9.6).

With seven goals and three assists between them, the trio have served up at least 22 points apiece in Fantasy Premier League ahead of their trip to the Etihad. And more than 519,000 FPL managers have swooped for one of three during the international break.

Weekend hosts, Manchester City, have allowed the least shots in the box and crosses of any side over the opening three rounds of fixtures. But Liverpool’s record against top six sides under Jurgen Klopp makes for encouraging reading – they won five and drew five of their 10 matches last season and put four past Arsenal last time out.

This could see interest wane in City forwards Gabriel Jesus (10.4) and Sergio Aguero (11.5), particularly the latter after he dropped to the bench for the win at Bournemouth in Gameweek 3.

Yet Aguero’s exemplary scored record against the Merseysiders may persuade his manager to hand him a recall – he has played at home to Liverpool on five times in the league and scored in all of them.

Voting for Spurs’ own star trio, Harry Kane (12.5), Dele Alli (9.5) and Christian Eriksen (9.6) could also take a knock as they travel to an Everton side that has yet to concede at home in all competitions this season.

In 2016/17, the Toffees had the third best home defensive record, behind Spurs and Manchester United.

At least Eriksen, who has accrued three assists, and the two-goal Ali have Fantasy form on their side.

The same cannot be said of last Gameweek’s poll leader Kane, who once again failed to break his August curse despite leading all players for shots and efforts in the box over the first three matches.

Kane’s more superstitious supporters will take heart in a productive September so far on international duty, with a brace against Malta. Should he score again against Slovakia tonight, he may well punish the 118,000+ managers who have already ditched him ahead of Gameweek 4.

The holy grail of strong form and fixtures combines well for Manchester United this week and could ensure that Romelu Lukaku (11.7) takes top spot. The 58.1%-owned forward – who has scored four times on international duty – collides with a Stoke City defence at the Bet365 that was the fifth-worst side in terms of shipping shots in the box at home.

The Belgian has failed to score in seven of his ten league appearances against the Potters, though, while a midfield supporting cast of Paul Pogba (8.2) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.3) present further armband options. The duo sit joint-top in the FPL standings on 26 points apiece, seven clear of Lukaku.

Arsenal have one of the best fixtures of the week, at home to a Bournemouth defence that have conceded five times and handed opponents more penalty area attempts than any other side.

But the Gunners have their own form to worry about following that chastening loss to Liverpool.

This is likely to temper interest in Alexandre Lacazette (10.4), who dropped to the bench at Anfield, although the summer signing did score in his only home fixture of the season, against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

An unimpressive showing against the Reds in Gameweek 3 could harm Alexis Sanchez’s (11.9) chances of captaincy poll success. His failure to secure a move away from Arsenal in the transfer window and reports of an ankle injury in training while on international duty with Chile this week are set to dampen his captaincy appeal.

Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Sanchez scored twice in a 3-1 win at the Emirates during the corresponding fixture last season.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata (10.1) should garner interest after scoring for Spain at the weekend and impressing since joining the London side this season. With two goals and as many assists, he has already been brought in by 203,000+ FPL managers ahead of his trip to a Leicester City side that has shipped six goals this season.

His team-mate Eden Hazard (10.5) makes his debut in our poll after recovering from a long-term injury. A goal against minnows Gibraltar for Belgian last week and a 26-minute run out against Greece last night indicates that he’s stepping up his match sharpness ahead of that visit to the King Power stadium.

Javier Hernandez (7.1) is among the intriguing differential options this week for West Ham’s first home fixture of the season.

He scored a brace against Southampton in Gameweek 2, but the Mexican international – who has been jettisoned by 99,442 managers this week – will not have it easy against newly-promoted Huddersfield Town on Monday.

The Terriers have yet to concede in the league this season, while the Hammers are rooted to the bottom of the table and are still in search of their first win.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 4 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article, offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Anyone else on WC having a tough time finding space for both Lukaku and Kane?

Definitely want Kane long term for captaincy, so it comes down to:
    A) Coutinho, Atsu, Lukaku
    B) Pogba, Eriksen/Alli, Firmino

I think you can get a very good defence & 2x GK's for 32.0m utilising West Brom, Swansea, Bournemouth, Burnley, Southampton, Newcastle, Brighton to get nice home fixtures every week for about 6 weeks or so. Reckon that cheap defence will keep pace with Alonso & Co, allowing bigger attackers

          1. OldBenKenobi
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

I removed Alonso in my WC the reason being:
I think there is better value currently in cheaper defenders currently like you say.
Also last year Chelsea defenders in general scored well due to the clean sheets they kept early on. Alonso will only warrant his 7 mil price if Chelsea are tight at the back again this season.

I think the champions league is a big factor & was my main reason for avoiding Alonso this year. Time will tell if it was wrong or right

Yeah that too. Don't get me wrong Alonso was/is great! Its just it would take a lot for CHE to
emulate what they did last season defensively.

If you give up Alonso of these, you've got it.

          Most points during season?

          Abraham/Alonso or Cedric/Firmino?

Something luke that to choose from

    A) Cortois (lei)
    B) Butland (MUN)

      Draft?

  4. Karan_G14

    What would you rather have?

    A)
    GW4: Suttner (WBA)
    GW5: Ake (BHA)
    2 FTs for GW5
Possibly 0.1 price drop on Ake

    B) Jones (stk & EVE)

Thinking of going with A if Ake is fit.
Might need to get rid of Stephens the week after if he is dropped.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Probably A in your case. although I'm a Jones owner

I would like to have him in my team but I'm not sure if I should get rid of Ake or Stephens right now.

If Ake is not fit I will most probably get Jones for him.

    2. My Name Is Pepu

B, Suttner vs WBA ideally not the best fixture.

        8 years, 11 months ago

I agree but it's a decent fixture. West Brom are not going to attack much.

And maybe I would have to get rid of Stephens next week so I can get Jones next week and Ake has a good fixture in GW5.

        1. My Name Is Pepu
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

West Brom are one of those teams that can consistently sneak out 1-0 victories plus they would look at this as a plum fixture and might try to make it 2-0 or 3-0.

          1. Karan_G14
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

But I don't want to make 2 defence transfers in 2 weeks that's a waste.
Though I'll probably get Jones if Ake is unfit.

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 11 months ago

                Suttner - Stephens - Bertrand

Ake & Long on the bench.

                1. My Name Is Pepu
                  • 9 Years
                  8 years, 11 months ago

You can just do Stephens to Jones. Play Suttner/Ake, Jones and Bertrand this week and Ake, Jones/Suttner, Bertrand next week.

                  1. Karan_G14
                    • 10 Years
                    8 years, 11 months ago

Then that's fixing something that's not broken. I know that Jones is a very good option but I just need to be sure of who I'm getting rid of. Stephens has Watford at home no point selling him this week.

                      • 9 Years
                      8 years, 11 months ago

Then it takes care of everything else. Just hold for now and do Stephens to Jones next week if Stephens is dropped.

                        • 10 Years
                        8 years, 11 months ago

Yup that's what my plan is if Ake is fit.

But if Ake isn't fit for this week then Ill sell him for Jones because he'll definitely drop 0.1 and might be a problem for next week also.

How important is Alonso for people on WC? Cant decide whether do leave out and keep money ITB to get Kane in GW5 or splash the cash now on Alonso and hope Lukaku out performs Kane.

I'm actually doubling up on Pogba and Mikhi in order to replace Lukaku to make space for Kane in GW4.
Then I can let my FT roll over to GW 5.

I could fit Alonso in as well. ( I think my team is a couple of comments below)

Considering the same thing. Just not sure Chelsea are going to get as many clean sheets are last year (due to champs league and lack of strength in the squad). Therefore going without Alonso and putting money in further up the pitch

    WC thoughts?

    Forster, Elliott
    Alonso, Yoshida, Hegazi, Zanka, Mbemba
    Mane, Pogba, Mikhi, Mooy, Atsu
    Kane, Abraham, Morata

Deciding between Morata/ Firmino to upgrade Mooy.

Not bad. The feeling on here seems to be that Hegazi won't play regularly once others are fit, maybe worth picking another on WC. Likewise Cedric may be safer than Yoshida - more competition at CB and I'd rather have Jones than a Southampton DEF anyhow. I like the Pogba + Mikhi double without Lukaku, good value there I think and allows for Kane up front - I may do this as well.

    Conspiracy:
Mark did not actually want to wildcard, but was forced to by the Towers so that the FPL Show would have Mark on it showcasing his wildcard team during wildcard "prime time".

We cannot allow such flagrant abuse of Mark's basic fpl rights. As he is the beacon of hope for us FFS users, we must protect his chips for him to use whenever he feels. He cannot become a sacrifice for the rest of us.

    A) Alonso

    Foster
    Hegazi* Suttner Stephens*
    Alli Mkhitaryan Mane Carroll*
    Kane Lukaku Gabbi*

    Elliot RLC* Lowe Long

    a) Hegazi might not start with Evans in the mix
    b) Hoedt or VVD might displace Stephens
    c) Gabbi is being....Gabbi 😉
    d) RLC injured.

Please specify which of the above problems require fixing with a transfer.

Right, it comes down to this:

    A) Jones, Salah, Kane
    B) Alonso, Eriksen, Morata

    Rest of team as follows:

    Foster
    ? - Cedric - Naughton - Hegazi
    ? - Mhiki - Alli
    ? - Lukaku Firmino

    Subs: Elliot, Carroll, Chalobah, Mbemba

    Any thoughts welcome.

    Mee-M'bemba-Cedric
    Alli-Pogba-Mkhitaryan-Salah(v)
    Kane-Chicharito(c)-Firmino

Do you really need Brady if he is sitting on your bench? downgrade to Carroll/Chalobah and upgrade Mbemba/Mee to Jones?

    3. tbizz

With your front 7, Brady is basically a wasted 1mil on the bench. Could do Brady + Lowe to Jones and TC or Chalobah.

Yep that was pretty definitive.. if you've got the 0.1 mil then to Mbemba to Jones.. if not take a pick of your 4.5 def, but I would keep Naughton over Lowe / Mee

Where should I put the captain in this lot?

Kane confirmed cap from 5-8 which is why I'm happy to leave Lukaku alone for a bit, but this week is a real worry!

    Fabianski, Elliot
    Alonso, Jones, Cedric, Hegazi, Mbemba
    Alli, Salah, Mkhi, Pogba, Chalobah
    Kane, Firmino, Abraham

It's a wildcard, so if you have any other suggestions (such as how to get Maguire in) then let me know, but mostly I'm stuck on captaincy.

On WC and still debating whether or not to go without Lukaku. A would mean rotating Carroll and RLC for the 4th midfield spot.

    A) Mee, RLC (4th mid), Lukaku
    B) Alonso, Pogba, Abraham

    Rest of team:
    Elliot, Foster
    Cedric, Jones, Naughton, Mbemba, ____
Mkhitaryan, Eriksen, Salah, Tom Carroll, ____
    Firmino, Kane, ____

I'm on B - based on captaincy choices mainly. Kane will be my captain for the foreseeable future and Mkhi and Pogba can cover Lukaku's non-capped points imo
