This is a very strange experience.

Denied the opportunity to host this week’s ScoutCast by BT’s shortcomings and with the Wildcard active, I am forced to join you and eavesdrop while my decision-making is torn apart by Andy, Jonty, Az and Luke. I have to admit, it’s pretty tortuous.

It’s like my hands are firmly fastened to the couch while the quartet lapdance* their critique around me. How I want to get “involved”.

Aside from appraising my “ill-timed” Wildcard, the boys tackle your other community questions.

They consider the Liverpool double-up, question whether midfield coverage can replace either Kane and Lukaku, debate whether Alonso is essential and then look at how fixtures can shape cheap defensive acquisitions.

I’m pretty sure they answer them all exactly as I would. In fact, listening back, they appear to justify my Wildcard for me. I can hardly wait for next week.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

        Hibbert has a point.

Sanchez is just coming off the back of a draining 1-0 loss vs Bolivia and he played 90 mins.

Doesnt feel like the right time

Ballsy but not madness. Great player with potential to get big points. Just quite a gamble with arsenals form. I'm tempted by lacazette for captain this week then switch to Kane next week.

Arsenal always play badly against Liverpool. Doesn't mean much. 24 goal attempts in Arsenals only home game this season.

Bournemouth have the worst defence in the league and everyone is overlooking Arsenal. The gamble could pay off.

Both are a risk. Lacazette should play as the striker though and possibly on pens. Of course all a bit unknown how they will play together. Lacazette also at full fitness and hasn't had the transfer saga.

      Who are you losing?

I was thinking about this in the bath earlier.

Sánchez has Chelsea in GW5 so even if he gans mad against Eddie Howe you've got 2FT to bring him in before GW6 (in my case as I haven't saved a FT).

Unnecessary to bring him in now.

Don't think we have ever spoken but I love your bluntness and honesty... for me the scoutcast died when it stopped being just Mark and Granville.. getting rid of the opening theme tune and moving to YouTube videos was bad enough but Jonty's drivel being added was the last straw for me... (honestly no offence intended, just the way I feel as do many others it seems) I won't comment on the others as I would not wish to offend them but think you have laid it out pretty clearly..

I thought the guys did okay. I would much rather have a scoutcast available then nothing at all if Mark is not involved. but it definitely didn't flow well at all.

I'm a big Jonty & Andy fan tho, i enjoy listening to both of them.

I really don't enjoy watching Luke however, he sits in a small dark room and is quite uncomfortable on camera. Nothing personal but it is a hard watch when Luke is on.

    Good morning all.

What would you do with this lot?

    2 FTs. £0 ITB.

    Foster - Elliot
    Davies - Cedric - Daniels - Naughton - Long
    Salah - Willian - Ramsey - Fraser - Carroll
    Lukaku - Kane - Jesus

    1) Jesus and William > Sanchez and a cheap striker
    2) William and Daniels > Alonso and a 4.5 mid
    3) Daniels and Fraser > Dunk and Brady
    4) Something else?

      Oh man!!

Almost the same situation as me...

      2 FT - £0 ITB

      Forster - Elliot
      Kolasinac - Hegazi - Stephens - Marriapa - Tuanezebe
      KDB - Willian - Fabregas - Chalobah - Carroll
      Lukaku - Kane - Jesus

I knew it would be tricky to pick the team with the 3 of them up top and really want to keep the front 3 as they are for now. I hope they will all fire and prove me right but its looking very doubtful at the moment.

Obviously i have lost money on KDB and Fab already but i really don't know how to fix the midfield.
Do i sell KDB + Willian ( risk of hazard ) But i know that dirnkwater will make fabregas not as nailed as well > Alli + Brady leaving £1.9 ITB or do i look to make something happen by KDB > lower price mid and then upgrading Hegazi and using that bit of profit that i have on him ??
Should i really be doubling up on spurs though ? Seems like liverpool are scoring but i dont trust the rotation risks they have available.

    Evening all,

Not-so-quick question regarding the sustainability of a 'Big 3' up top. I imagine I'm not alone in currently possessing a front 3 of Lukaku, Firmino and Kane (or a combination of expensive assets akin to this). Unlike some, perhaps, I have held this front 3 since the beginning of the season and put simply, it hasn't worked, yet. Whilst it is possible to attribute some of Kane's lost points to a bit of bad luck and the notorious August curse, I am left wondering whether (even if Kane does begin to score) this 'Big 3' is the way to go.

After briefly scanning some statistics on the members area and crunching the numbers, it became apparent that even if Kane had scored in 2 of his 3 previous games, garnering an extra 10-15 points, I believe I still wouldn't have had a blistering start to season. Bearing in mind the fact that I have a fairly 'template' defence in place (the Foster - Elliot pair combined with Stephens, Jones, Davies, Mee and bench fodder Rangel), it is clear that any points I have lost out on have come primarily as a result of my top heavy formation preventing me from spreading the wealth in midfield. This is not to say my team is without error; the selection of KDB being the most notable, but in relation to so-called 'hardcore' players, I have lost out as a result of being unable to fund more 8-9.5m midfielders, which has so far punished me with midfielders at Liverpool, Spurs and United in particular, scoring heavily.

Whilst I do not expect United to keep running over teams late in matches, or Liverpool to play Arsenal at Anfield every week, it appears that the expensive midfielders from the aforementioned teams should score consistently well for the duration of the season. This is before Hazard and Sanchez dare to complicate matters. Additionally, whilst it appears there may be value to be had below the 6.0m mark in midfield, the 6-8m bracket appears worryingly barren for anyone who possesses a 'Big 3' like myself. Early injuries to Zaha and Lallana, combined with Pep's reluctance to consistently feature Sane or Sterling, did not help in this regard leading many to question whether Alonso (at similar price) is better value than comparable midfielders.

The only saving grace for my current situation appears to be the conundrum of captaincy. Whilst midfielders have scored well, I do not believe an 'explosive' captaincy option, akin to Kane or Lukaku, has emerged. And yet in spite of this, I have only captained Harry Kane once to date, with Lukaku successfully delivering in Gameweeks 1 and 2 before missing out on a golden chance to do so again in Gameweek 3.

In sum, I share the views of those on the Scoutcast who suggested that long-term, a 'Big 3' up top is unsustainable. However, I struggle to see when I might be forced to make this change in the next 5 Gameweeks. The fixtures appear kind enough to Kane, Lukaku and Firmino, and Morata is beginning to create a sizeable shadow looming over my team. This is before some inevitable Lacazette points roll in over the coming weeks and assuming Gabriel Jesus or Sergio Aguero does not become a consistently reliable source of points in Pep's city minefield.

My question(s), long-winded as it has been, is whether fellow 'Big 3' owners foresee a point on the horizon when they have planned to remove one of their big 3? If not, is this the most effective way to garner points if the sub-8m range in midfield remains unpredictable?

With so many exciting forward options available, I find myself heavily reliant on successfully nailing a Harry Kane captaincy hat trick to justify my faith. Exciting as this season is from a striker-perspective, I can't help but miss the security of a trickling stream of goals assists coming from premium midfield assets.

It's a valid concern. While extremely punty, I'm currently rolling with this front 7 as a result of not having Kane and Lukaku.

      Mané - Pogba - Alexis - Sterling
      Firmino - Morata - Chicharito

You could swap Sterling for D.Silva or Mkhi, but my point being is that there aren't any real weaknesses there. Chicharito has excellent fixtures and you can review his spot once they end, or if West Ham don't improve.

Love this post and your front 7!

It's teams exactly like yours that motivated my curiosity. Have you had successful captains to date?

Sorry, I nipped out to Asda!

I pretty much WC'ed to this team last week after owning Lukaku and Mkhi. I thought Kane would rip it up against Burnley and fancied Alexis for the Liverpool and Bournemouth fixtures. As it happened, it didn't turn out well.... Sterling scores and is then sent off, Sanchez does nothing and Kane(c) misfires. Prior to GW3 I captained Lukaku in both GW1 and 2, so I've done ok on the captain front.

I've now spread the Kane funds by doing Kane + Richarlison > Morata and Pogba, and plan to upgrade the defence a little to Cedric, Jones and B.Davies.

good luck with whatever you decide!

I wouldn't beat yourself up too much over this. Inevitably something will happen that will allow you to make a more informed decision regarding formation options. Just keep your WC and transfers if possible until you get more information.

As a fellow Big 3 owner I haven't designated a particular GW when I will get rid of one of them but have let form decide that. So right now as things stand Kane has 3 weeks max then has to go. Can't afford to carry that kind of price tag in my team especially when trying 5 at the back.

I'm in the same conundrum- I think the solution for me is playing 4/5 defs, 2/3 mid and 3 strikers at the moment- there is no value in cheap midfielders or strikers so you have to go with big hitters and a decent defence. Once a decent cheap midfielder or striker emerges I can rebalance

(I am playing 5 defs next week- I've not done that in 4ys of ff)

        Thanks for this!

I've considered doing exactly the same, feel I'm wasting spots on mid price midfielders that could be filled by premium defenders.

Slap on the wrist for being stupid, no more than that. It's pretty clear to me that he was conversing with Walker, unless Walker has an imaginary friend.

I was at Wembley. Sitting behind him as he did it. I have no doubt who it was aimed at. If he gets away with no punishment he has been monumentally lucky.

          • 16 Years

There can be little doubt that he was already conversing with Walker and the ref just happened to wander between them when you look at the footaage here:

          http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/dele-alli-swears-video-footage-kyle-walker-referee-england-vs-slovakia-a7930131.html

But it is a bit stupid with TV and a a big audience watching. I'd imagine England will fine him and warn him about his future conduct and FIFA will be happy with that.

I've written another article - this time, it's a comprehensive analysis to get an answer to the Eriksen vs Alli dilemma, followed by a comparison of three budget strikers in Abraham, Vokes and Mounie. In-depth with all the stats, heat maps and average positions. Do give it a read.

Yeah, it's really tricky. Stats point towards Eriksen but SWA (H) after Dortmund at home, BOU (H) before Real away, CRY (H) before Real at home and WBA (H) after Dortmund at home.. could be rested for one of those based on last season, maybe not if Spurs' CL campaign is looking hopeless by then.

    So its pretty much:

    Pogba
    - Similar to Alli
    - More nailed than Mkhi
    - 0.1 cheaper
    - Lots of goal threat and some assist potential
    - On direct FKs and could be on pens

    Mkhi
    - Similar to Eriksen
    - Hasn't blanked yet
    - Fantastic assist potential and some goal threat
    - On corners
    - Further up the pitch than Pogba

    4.4 Defenders

Wimmer - MH says “Obviously this deal was with a view to the future because we know that Kurt is a Chelsea player, but Kevin is our player now and we knew that this deal wouldn’t have been available to us this time next year."

Yedlin - Local press says Rafa prefers 1 attacking FB and 1 defensive FB

Lejeune - Perhaps the more likely because if Rafa doesn't risk both Manquillo & Yedlin then Clark could go LB making Lejeune a shoe-in to partner Lascelles. Even if M & Y were to start Lejeune would appear ahead of Lascelles based on v TOT gw1

Holgate - Played the last 180', numbers not great but looks like it's his spot to lose given both games were v very tough away opponents in mac & che.

On balance Lejeune's rotation w/Naughton edges it for me but all a bit iffy tbh

      Good points.

I've got my eye on Holgate but for GW6+ (with the next 2 fixtures his price won't rise).

I reckon MH will go for a 3-man Stoke central defence with Shawcross, Zouma and Wimmer all showing. Time will tell. I wouldn't rush to buy him.

    How's she looking?

I've got Carroll coming in for Sterling this week, which I'm not unhappy about. Perhaps Sterling becomes someone else in a week or two, let's see. Ben Davies coming in for PvA next week for the Spurs - Swansea fixture.

    Foster
    Cedric - Jones - PvA
    Mané - Pogba - Alexis - Sterling
    Firmino - Morata - Chicharito

    (Elliott - Carroll - Mbemba - Wimmer)

          PvA may not play ...
Sánchez not yet fit. Sterling, as you say, will be covered by Carroll. Chicharito is a hamstring strain in waiting. Mbemba already has a hammy. Wimmer may not play yet.
I am far from convinced by Morata.

Other than that it's fine and dandy! 😀

If only I had a WC to sort it all out 😆

I'm not expecting PvA to start, actually. It'll be a bonus if he does.
Sanchez also might be on the bench. He only arrived back today 😕 Worse, Wenger might feel pressurised to start him and he doesn't look sharp and gets pulled off after 60 mins.
Wimmer is one for later... hope he's not required off the bench this week!

And.... Morata is my captain! I think Leicester are a little out of sorts at the moment. Drinkwater asking to leave, is a big player for them. Not sure how Mahrez will be after his little AWOL on deadline day.

if you predict Kane to be topscorer by gw 21 it seems to contradict you putting Spurs 4th in the table?
Got to be scoring 4 more goals than Luk and Mané to get infront, and one would suspect Lukaku to score a great deal by then making Kane doing remarkably well and Spurs letting in insane amount of goals, that does´not look likely to mee

      1. Lindleaf
        • 11 Years

I suspect it being a tight race between him and Kane. I think Kane will score the majority of Spurs goal whereas the United goals will be shared a bit more. But yeah, it's a fifty fifty for me. Betting sites have Lukaku as the favorite after 38 GW so I guess that's the safest way to go

Mbemba is a waste and you should cash Hegazi in as he's not nailed. Naughton will end up playing every week in that squad.

I think i'd take a hit to lose Mbemba and Phillips for a playing defender, and maybe Brady in midfield.
