With the Champions League group stages kicking off next week, we belatedly check in with the official Fantasy Football game.

Here’s the basics on the UEFA offering ahead of the Matchday 1 action next Tuesday evening.

Squad Selection

Seasoned Fantasy Premier League managers will be more than familiar with the machinations of building a UEFA Champions League squad.

Handed a budget of £100m, you must select a squad of 15 players comprising of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

In the group stages, only three players from any given team are allowed. As the tournament progresses, though, this quota increases to four players per team for the round of 16, five for the Quarter Finals, six in the Semis and eight in the Final.

The UEFA game offers the same eight formations as FPL, allowing managers to set their teams up in 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-2-3, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 set-ups.

According to the UEFA site, original player price are frozen until the completion of Matchday 3 – after that, they will “change depending on performance”.

Substitutions

While UEFA offers the chance to set up your bench to utilise the autosubs option, the more hands-on Fantasy managers can manually alter their line-ups between Gamedays in any Matchday.

So if one of your starters performs poorly or isn’t selected, you can swap them out and bring in a replacement off the bench later in the Matchday.

And depending on the time of the first kick-off, we get a heads-up on the early line-ups ahead for each deadline, affording us the chance to hold fire until the teams are announced before cementing their plans.

When selecting captains, you have the option to “stick or twist” on each Gameday – but by removing the armband from any player, you will lose their double points. This only applies if your captain is not sent off, however; indeed, anyone who is dismissed cannot be subbed out of your starting XI.

Considering that we are able to switch armbands in the matchday, you want to make sure that you have a strong captain choice for each evening in the event that your initial armband pick lets you down.

Scoring Points

Again, the rules are very similar to FPL.

For example, you should be more than familiar with the concept that keepers and defenders who play at least 60 minutes and don’t concede will earn six points for a clean sheet. Further up the field, midfielders garner five points for a goal but forwards pick up only four points for scoring.

You can get more on the rules here, though there are a couple of differences that are worth illuminating for now.

A player is awarded two points for earning his side a penalty, regardless of whether they subsequently convert it. And conceding a penalty means the culpable player loses one point for doing so.

Also, according to UEFA, “No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble)”.

Transfers

Fantasy managers are granted one transfer at the end of each Matchday to freshen up their squads – make any more changes and (just like FPL) it’ll cost you four points per alteration.

Only one transfer can be carried forward to the next Matchday during the group stages.

After the group stages pass, Fantasy managers can then make an unlimited number of changes prior to the Round of 16 kicking off.

Once the knockout stage gets underway, though, the number of free transfers per Matchday is as follows:

Two free transfers before Round of 16 second legs
Five free transfers before quarter-final first legs
Two free transfers before quarter-final second legs
Five free transfers before semi-final first legs
Two free transfers before semi-final second legs
Five free transfers before final.

Please be aware, though, that no transfers can be carried forward once the knockout phase begins.

You also have a Wildcard in hand, which can be utilised at any point in the tournament.

Torn between Lukaku and Salah as my captain. Lukaku is the safe option that I think most people will go with so a good choice for ownership reasons. Salah is good because without Kompany, City are going to be even worse at the back. I have changed about 20 times now.

If high in your mini league go Lukaku, if you feel your way behind gamble on Salah.

Liverpool will score at least two tomorrow, imo. The problem with Liverpool, as always, is that the goals are less concentrated than other teams. I'd play safe and go Lukaku. At least with Salah, you've already bought a ticket for the lottery.

Tadic is a great option as you said, good threat and takes penalties.

I like Matt Phillips as an option in that price range, but West Brom have a few options now, so I'm not sure how safe is start is.

Brady is also a good option, the form player of these three and cheaper!

He's sharing set pieces with Davies. I'd always go Kane ahead of Eriksen if you have him

don't own Kane, just fancy Eriksen for some points this weekend. Bavies nicking his set pieces is so frustrating atm

          • 10 Years
          8 years, 7 months ago

Yeah, I agree. As an Eriksen owner as well as a fan.

Sharing set pieces certainly dents Eriksen's appeal but on the plus side he is heavily involved in our attacks unlike Alli who can go missing for long periods. If you feel Spurs will get two or more goals Eriksen is worth a punt. IMO he is most likely for goal involvement out of our attackers so a bit of a safe pick.

FPL is at its best when we have to keep thinking ahead. Give me Kane blanking the first 3 or 4 game weeks, than a Kane, Ronaldo, Suarez auto-captain situation.

The best players in this game are those with Kane from GW1. He's the most explosive captain in the game. These players are likely to be struggling in terms of OR, so the rest of us need to make good before he scores his next hat-trick or brace. Because he will.

    1. F4L
      • 11 Years

not to sure about that. He's off form at the moment, and teams for definitely upping their game travelling to Wembley right now. I'm happier not to own, than being afraid of not owning

Which bit are you not too sure about?

There's a number of players who took a calculated gamble that Kane and Spurs would start the season slowly, and that's worked out wonderfully. But he is going to start firing them in soon. Spurs will adapt to Wembley at some point.

        1. Pochecinno

Nothing to do with Wembley. Opposition might be upping their game for the occasion, I'm not denying that. But in both the Chelsea and Burnley games, Spurs looked more than comfortable.

I don't think you can dismiss Wembley just like that. If I was Swansea, I'd much prefer to play Spurs at Wembley than at White Hart Lane.

Spurs will say Wembley has no effect - on them - but perhaps it's having an effect on the opposition.

Good front 3. Your milfs worry me -only two heavy hitters in there. I suppose Alonso makes an extra milf.
      A. Always Kane.

Alonso covers that and to be honest as a Newcastle fan I think Ritchie is a steal. Brady my only real gamble which I'm happy to take.

Anyone thought through loftus cheek vs Chalobah? Need to make quick decision of which to come in for ward prowse before he falls again tonight. Mainly for next few weeks as will then probably wildcard...

The stats so far shows Chalobah bigger threat, but palace have been rubbish and rlc's more advanced position would suggest bigger potential
