With the Champions League group stages kicking off next week, we belatedly check in with the official Fantasy Football game.

Here’s the basics on the UEFA offering ahead of the Matchday 1 action next Tuesday evening.

Squad Selection

Seasoned Fantasy Premier League managers will be more than familiar with the machinations of building a UEFA Champions League squad.

Handed a budget of £100m, you must select a squad of 15 players comprising of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

In the group stages, only three players from any given team are allowed. As the tournament progresses, though, this quota increases to four players per team for the round of 16, five for the Quarter Finals, six in the Semis and eight in the Final.

The UEFA game offers the same eight formations as FPL, allowing managers to set their teams up in 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-2-3, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1 set-ups.

According to the UEFA site, original player price are frozen until the completion of Matchday 3 – after that, they will “change depending on performance”.

Substitutions

While UEFA offers the chance to set up your bench to utilise the autosubs option, the more hands-on Fantasy managers can manually alter their line-ups between Gamedays in any Matchday.

So if one of your starters performs poorly or isn’t selected, you can swap them out and bring in a replacement off the bench later in the Matchday.

And depending on the time of the first kick-off, we get a heads-up on the early line-ups ahead for each deadline, affording us the chance to hold fire until the teams are announced before cementing their plans.

When selecting captains, you have the option to “stick or twist” on each Gameday – but by removing the armband from any player, you will lose their double points. This only applies if your captain is not sent off, however; indeed, anyone who is dismissed cannot be subbed out of your starting XI.

Considering that we are able to switch armbands in the matchday, you want to make sure that you have a strong captain choice for each evening in the event that your initial armband pick lets you down.

Scoring Points

Again, the rules are very similar to FPL.

For example, you should be more than familiar with the concept that keepers and defenders who play at least 60 minutes and don’t concede will earn six points for a clean sheet. Further up the field, midfielders garner five points for a goal but forwards pick up only four points for scoring.

You can get more on the rules here, though there are a couple of differences that are worth illuminating for now.

A player is awarded two points for earning his side a penalty, regardless of whether they subsequently convert it. And conceding a penalty means the culpable player loses one point for doing so.

Also, according to UEFA, “No assist is given to a player who creates his own goal scoring opportunity (e.g. solo run/dribble)”.

Transfers

Fantasy managers are granted one transfer at the end of each Matchday to freshen up their squads – make any more changes and (just like FPL) it’ll cost you four points per alteration.

Only one transfer can be carried forward to the next Matchday during the group stages.

After the group stages pass, Fantasy managers can then make an unlimited number of changes prior to the Round of 16 kicking off.

Once the knockout stage gets underway, though, the number of free transfers per Matchday is as follows:

Two free transfers before Round of 16 second legs
Five free transfers before quarter-final first legs
Two free transfers before quarter-final second legs
Five free transfers before semi-final first legs
Two free transfers before semi-final second legs
Five free transfers before final.

Please be aware, though, that no transfers can be carried forward once the knockout phase begins.

You also have a Wildcard in hand, which can be utilised at any point in the tournament.

I think pool will sizzle out like always. So only choosing mane as he will be the most consistent.

    Thoughts on this WC.

    Alonso - Jones - Davies - Bertrand
    Antonio - Salah - Brady
    Kane - Firmino - Lukaku

    Elliot - Naughton - RLC - Carroll + 0.2 itb

This is good. You're 0.1 short of doing Bertrand to Cedric and Antonio (who I like, actually) to Mkhi or Pogba, aren't you?

No I could get pogba doing other way as I brought him in before price rise. I'm just tempted by antonio's low ownership and hopefully fair fixtures

Currently on Lukaku but Lacazette is very tempting!!

If you behind in you mini league, it's a calculated risk to captain lacazette . If you on top , lukaku is the 'safe' option

    Thoughts about this.

    Bench - Elliot / Schindler / Carroll / Rangel

    thoughts on this wildcard team?
    Foster (elliot)
    kolasinac davies bertrand (naughton mee)
    mkhitaryan eriksen mane ritchie (carroll)
    chicharito lukaku firmino
if i do this will have 0.2 in the bank remaining only concern i have is not having kane and lack of chelsea and city cover.
i think out of top 6 spurs and arsenal have good fixtures chelsea have bad fixtures and the other 3 teams are neither good nor bad.
Thats why i have covered spurs and arsenal and not chelsea because of fixtures and also decided to cover united and liverpool and not city because of form

G2G? Want to do Valencia -> Jones next week as I feel that my defence is too expensive. Brady is also on the radar

    GK: Elliot (Begovic)
DEF: Alonso, Valencia, Davies (Suttner, Kompany)
MID: Eriksen, Salah, Miki, Richarlison (Carroll)
    FWD: Kaku, Chicharito, Joselu

    0FT and 0.8 mil itb

On WC and went for this team ..

    Courtois ( Elliot )
    Jones - Cedric - Bellerín ( Ward - Naugh )
    Eriksen - Salah - Ozil ( Atsu - Brady )
    Lukaku - Firmino ( Abraham )

1.2 ITB if needed. Atsu and Brady rotate very well, home games.. The defense also rotates well .. I will switch between Lukaku and other premium strikers depending who I will captain..

So what do guys think ? Any glaring issues? Thx

    Swans Bournemouth rotation:

NEW BRI WAT LEI HUD LEI CHE BRI HUD BOU BUR SOT WBA

With Daniels dropping to 4.9 I'll be having some of that with Naughton.

Actually, I can't afford Daniels, but Francis is 4.4 and fit to play.

Long term, who'll be better: Francis or Holgate?

Is Francis nailed? Could be a stronger option than Winmer and Holgate at 4.4m if so!

Well he usually is. Got injured in the first game, and in the 2 he missed they didn't defend well, so I'm expecting him to nail that spot. He's the club captain after all.

        • 11 Years
        8 years, 7 months ago

I think they will. They have a history of starting the season poorly. Daniels has huge attacking threat averaging 4 goals 4 assists a season and now playing wingback too. Pretty good value imo.

Not a huge fan of Francis for some reason, but he seems to be nailed and rotates better with Naughton. Holgate better individually but depends on how your def rotates.

Wouldn't say he has poor stats. Scored in the first game. Whole team was crap against Stoke and he was benched against Pool.

I think he will start banging them in soon.

That was mainly due to Wenger's bonkers tactics in trying to hold onto the Ox. With players playing in their rightful positions and Sanchez on form, he should get more and better chances.

Kane. I bet most people will captain Kaku. If you have both, Kane is the way to go cause you already have half of Kakus points. Consider that non-Kane owners will have a hard time if Kane explodes this week.

You already have half Kane's points too?

Yeah, but there are more Kakus owners and less Kane owners. By having Kaku your covered with half his points and have a higher risk reward with Kane

Just pick the one you think scores more.

Reread my first comment. I see why it was confusing 😉

If he's there just as a 4.0 to free up funds elsewhere, then yes.

                Can he drop to 3.9?

in that case Tuanzebe is a better option as a 3.9

Which of these would you rather have for long term.
            Atsu
            Brady

            Thanks

I have Atsu but want Brady, think the Wood signing is a positive for his output with that sweet left peg!

Nah price rises occur at the same time every night.

            Final WC decision:

            A: Chicharito as third forward
B: Abraham/Ayew as third forward which leaves cash to get Kane next week
