This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Kane -> Aguero seems really knee jerky, but then Aguero is at the top of the FPL leaderboard with 41 points and where is Kane for 1.1m more? on 19 points way down behind the likes of Rooney, Rashford, Vokes and Welbeck.

It's kneejerk because we've all been convinced to think Kane is essential because he's managed a brace this season. WTF people form + fixtures greater than hype.

    Is doing Morata + Yoshida --> Aguero (C) + holgate worth a -4?

I feel like im missing a captain option next week... (Front three: Kane (whu), Morata (sto) and firminho (lei)) and im afraid to miss out on another Aguero brace. To justify the hit he only needs to score 2 pts more than Kane next week, which I think is very likely? Can I get some takes on this?

    A) Go for your ideal team now, except leave in the players that have risen in price for you

Chances are Aguero Kane Lukaku Jesus will be fighting out golden boot perhaps with Morata so best plan is perhaps to pick 2 and stick with them with lower priced striker. Tammy scored 26 goals last season at Bristol and will come good. So for me Kane Lukaku Tammy A the best front 3 to allow strong midfield and defence as balance

Messing around with an epic front line wildcard. Not going to do it, but it's possible :

    Elliott

    Kolasinac / Davies / Lascelles

Atsu / Salah / Eriksen / RLC rotate Carroll

    Kane / Lukaku / Aguero

    (4m keeper / Rosenior / Rangel)

Imagine the captain headache but what a front 3!

    1. MTPockets

Atsu needs to not get benched though. Perhaps Ritchie instead and Kola/Davies to Jones/Cedric.

If Atsu gets benched by Rafa the one of RLC / Carroll I benched comes in...

Own him but still doubting since Burnley only averages 1 goal per game. Ritchie or Atsu probably better value for money.

City scored 5 against Liverpool and the talk was about getting 3 Spurs attackers and ignoring City.

By GW8 every team could conceivably have 3x city attackers if they continue like this. 3 of Kun, Jesus, Silva, KDB

Add Sterling to that. Yep, no-one rates him, but he drives with the ball centrally and offers something different that City don't have. He's improving all the time.

Yeah, I was on my WC also and it seemed I had my blinkers on. I changed Morata to Jesus in the end to have some form of cover for their fixtures but Aguero ran riot.

Kane was 1 inch away from scoring this weekend, and a bad refereeing decision. Cant legislate for stuff like that

If you do not own Aguero, I recommend that you wait until after the Caribou Cup if you want to put him in. I am very concerned that he will be rested when the Palace game comes around and considering giving the arm band to someone else. I know the rewards could be fantastic if he plays but is the risk too great to consistently captain Aguero?

They have a big squad, but agree the cup may be being underestimated in general.

On another note, loving the fact that Kuns already going to rise tonight, means probable .3 rise this week.

xG rates the % chances of a goal from where the team is shooting from. Thing is, not every player has the same shooting ability.

Definitely unlucky. I thought they put in a really good performance against Burnley... very unlucky not to have scored in that game, and for de Boer to subsequently get the sack.

I get the idea, but surely looking at stats like chances created, shots in the box, key passes etc are more reliable and tangible than an "expected goal" it seems too abstract to me.

Not really because stuff like chances created, shots in the box, key passes etc don't give any idea of the quality of shot whereas xg tries to qualify the chance based on where it comes and the percentage of a shot from that position scoring. It is far from perfect but much better than what you suggest.
