Quite simply, we can’t have them all.

On a day that began with us fixated on the fortunes of Sergio Aguero, it was perhaps fitting that almost every other big striker produced their own bid to steal his thunder.

Aguero was a slow starter but eventually found his gear to take his turn in Manchester City’s mauling of Crystal Palace.

A goal and an assist were his reward, with two bonus points ensuring that the Argentine avoided being dwarfed by the double-figure blitz from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane from midfield.

Again, there was evidence that Pep Guardiola’s attacking riches border on the ridiculous. Just ask Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian sat unused on the bench, forcing his 678,000 owners – not least the 183,000 who acquired him with Palace in mind – to choke on a bitter pill.

Pep’s Jesus decision was perhaps signposted by 90 minutes in midweek. But it’s no less confusing for us Fantasy managers, who must now wonder if Guardiola will toy with ongoing rotation of his strikers, with Sterling and Sane building compelling claims for regular starts.

Chelsea in Gameweek 6 will tell us more, although it’s City’s meeting with a beleaguered Stoke City defence that we really care about now.

We can, of course, opt out completely. It’s not as if our options are limited.

Harry Kane’s brace at the London Stadium offered a reminder that he will not surrender the Golden Boot, or his place in squads.

Sold by 196,000, with 141,000 of those swapping to Aguero, the Spurs striker set the bar for the City man with a 13-point return in the early kick-off.

Kane remains a force of nature, with the talent to circumvent Spurs’ woes on the Wembley turf – he now has 11 goals from his last five away matches.

Romelu Lukaku wasn’t to be put in the corner. He picked off his sixth goal in as many Gameweeks, as Manchester United endured a hard-fought victory at St Mary’s.

But Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata won today’s battle.

He ruthlessly exploited an ailing Stoke City defence to punish the 148,000 who had disposed of his services amid the clamour for Aguero.

Chelsea and Morata won’t play against a centre-back pairing of Darren Fletcher and Glen Johnson every week, but the Spaniard’s haul was nonetheless telling.

It offered a reminder that this is a season awash with goal scoring riches.

Our midfield firepower may have stalled – thanks in no small part to the absence of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez. But that’s allowed the strikers to roll back the years and reinstate themselves as the critical position in our squad.

This could have a marked impact on our squad construction, particularly for those still with Wildcards to play. Funds in midfield will surely be scrutinised, monies in defence squeezed.

This could be a season where the big-hitting forwards take turns to dominate. Restricting ourselves to just two may no longer cut it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        He's over performing if anything. Should have 0.69 goals from his shot quality so far.

        Lukaku 6.38
        Aguero 5.16
        Kane 4.54
        Salah 4.11
        Vardy 4.02 (Excluding penalties, so he should have a whole extra goal)

    What are the thoughts regarding Southampton from those who have watched their recent matches?
    I'm beginning to wonder if Cedric is fool's gold and better value could be found elsewhere

    1. tafrère
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 6 months ago

      Southampton will get clean sheets, they're pretty solide defensively. But Cédric won't get bps nor attacking returns considering how difficult it is for them to score a goal.

      1. Teahupo'o
        • 14 Years

        Agree that they have been solid, but best defense is a good offense. With their backs constantly against the wall, don't think it's worth investing in.

        Agree with this - solid defence but struggling to score goals. However if you're looking for bonus points in the saints back line you'd have to take a risk with a CB given VVD Hoedt Yoshida and Stephens fighting for places. I've just brought Cedric in I think he guarantees steady points

      3. Foozeball
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 6 months ago

        Cedric, with no bps nor attacking returns, feels no better than defenders from the likes of Newcastle, Huddersfield, and Burnley, who also get CS points for a cheaper price
        Might be much better use of value to either upgrade him to someone like Kolasinac or downgrade to a cheaper defender with similar CS potential

    Last season Ben Crabtree, the winner, won without a single Liverpool player because he hates Liverpool. That being said, they had so many players on the pitch it was difficult to pin down one who was always scoring (Firmino, Mane, Coutinho, Wijnaldum & Lallana). I sway away from Liverpool because they have so many options. Now that Coutinho is back and so will Mane, they will have the same situation going forward. And coverage doesn't matter because you will always be frustrated. Same thing, I believe, will happen with Man City, which I will try and stay away.

    Kane, Morata and Lukaku will seemingly always be in the goals, as more or less, they are the teams main goal threats. Is it possible to stay away from Liverpool and Man City?

      Owner here, and may yet toss, but would have had +5 points if sub taken another 90 secs. Ugh.

      City next maybe not so great, but then three prime fixtures. Gotta think.

      Check points per million end of season and see where he sits. Up there I would think.

    Is it time to admit the Firmino option from the get go has been less than satisfactory.

    Think it's time to pop a few pills and join the Vardy party until the WC at least.

      Used my WC Gw4 but damn Liverpool play Newcastle next. I'd only keep him for one more week but even saying that I'm really thinking about jumping on Vardy instead

        Newcastle are pretty solid, that's not an A1 fixture.

          Don't overthink it, it is an A1 fixture

      I'm giving him Newc with Mane back.
      Then he's gone

      Firmino is just not a striker. He's still the same player as last year, but getting 4 points instead of 5 and no CS points, combined with not really being as attacking and direct as Mane and Salah. Just unlucky from a classification/FPL perspective.

      He gave me two double digit weeks so I´m satisfied. But he hasnt been 100% right last two weeks. Return of Coutinho seems to have blunted him. Pool have two difficult games in next three while Leicester are starting a run of nice fixtures. Vardy has four goals - almost five - in last four games, and seven bonus in first six games.

        Vardy for Firmino a no brainer then you reckon?

    Please tell me what you guys think of the following 4 changes for -8:

    Lukaku --> Morata
    Salah --> Coutinho
    Bavies --> Kiko
    Carroll --> Sterling

    The rest of my team is:

    Foster, Elliot
    Jones, Otamendi, Kolasinac, Mbemba
    Mkhi, Eriksen, Atsu
    Kane, Hemed

        I feel like over the course of the season Lukaku and Morata will be very close in points. Same for Salah and Coutinho. Kiko is definitely a downgrade to Bavies, but he has been good for a few bonus when he has played. The big one is Carroll to Sterling. Thoughts?

      Your are basically getting rid of 3 good players for Sterling. Not for me.
      Just do Lukaku > Morata and thank me in about 5 weeks. 🙂

      Next week Lukaku could easily score 12-15 points, Salah 5-10 points, Bavies get a a CS or assist... plus a -8 on top of that.

      1. You've gotta hope he'll start
      2. You've gotta hope for a clean sheet on a poor defensive team
      3. You'll get no bps whatsoever

    So I had stayed away from the hype train and Kun, I'd have 8 more points(took a hit) right now. My fault

    I needed today to remind myself why my 'risks' last season never paid off. 2 red arrows in a row after only greens in the first 4 playing calm and steady transfers. On to the next...
