Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was going to take a hit and do Lukaku/Ritchie > Kun/Richarlison but Mark raises a great point on Kun and captain but Mark raises a great point. Even the threat of him not starting is enough not to captain him, with CL a few days later.

And Richarlison missed two sitters that probably would have won them the game. Those are the kinds of things that can drive a player to a slump. With all these transfers in now too the writing tends to be on the wall with this kind of bandwagon, like Sterling for this GW.

Any thoughts or comments are appreciated so I'm not just waffling on me tod! 😀

Agree with Mark RE: Kun (but I have still brought him in).

As for Richarlison, I have to disagree. He's looked great all season and on another day would score those. Can't compare him with Sterling since Richarlison is nailed-on and more-or-less, Watford's main attacking outlet (so much of their attack comes down his right flank).

      For 6.3m, he's definitely worth a pick.

I think Richalison is a great buy at his price. I don't see many downsides tbh. In an attacking side, cheap and always involved.

The missed goals only hint at an increase in points not a decrease.

Dembele being out means he constantly is dropping deep right now. Winks doesn't provide the creativity. This is shown by Eriksen's shots in recent matches, with almost all of them now coming from outside the area. He doesn't normally perform in big games either, 2 of the next 3 are big games

Incredibly similar to my WC tea, so I approve for the most part. Seeing as ours are similar, I'll paste mine for reference:

      DDG / Elliot
      Azpi / Otamendi / Daniels / Ward / DUFFY
      Eriksen / SALAH / STERLING / Richarlison / SURMAN
      Aguero / Morata / Abraham

I don't know about your purchasing power, but some comments nevertheless:

Can you stretch to Pope/Ryan for 4.5m (or Fab for 4.6m)?

I understand your Manquillo pick, but why not go for Yedlin (also at 4.4m)? I feel he is a better Newcastle option. Alternatively, you could go for Dunk (4.4m), which would spread the risk, seeing as you are going to be playing Elliot a lot of weeks (although I assume Manquillo would be on the bench).

I like your midfield. Salah/Coutinho is a 50/50 currently. I think your Silva pick is potentially better than my Sterling one, simply as Silva has played more. Carroll is absolutely fine. Would recommend RLC, but unsure about minutes & I'm personally going for Surman (4.6)... but it's not a big issue.

Obviously I like your forwards. I think we're both risking big by going Kane-less, but I guess we're both looking at fixtures.

Yes nice team. Sterling will cause you headaches but more explosive than Silva- balancing act just ensure good first sub. Brighton defender interesting over Yedlin but I just get the feeling I’ve missed their cleanies. I can’t stretch the keeper no which is frustrating.

Watch Daniels price. He is currently 4.9m, but close to falling (-97.3).

Although I've listed him in my team, I don't actually have him this second. I am on a defender whose value will hold, on the chance that Daniels falls and I can get him 0.1m cheaper.

Perhaps over the course of this week, this could help you out?

    A few questions!

If Kola/Davies don’t turn up or even start who would be best to go to otamendi?

Should I transfer Eriksen to Salah or Cout for the next few weeks? I have Kane and Davies if I keep him but no pool cover

    Thanks all!

I’m a little confused at everyone wanting Eriksen gone but not Kane.... the fixture is just as tough for Kane.

How does this look? I’ve done Kaku > Kun but I’m considering selling Bavies to Otamendi for a hit. Thoughts? Thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Mourinho has a very good record in big games at home; his mentality is to defend (park the bus) away and get the 3 points at home. I wouldn't want any opposition defenders against Man Utd if I have the option.

Walker or Ota good move I think. Doesn't matter how nailed Alonzo is right now as CFC defense looks shaky at best.

What would you do with this team, does it need wild carding? 1FT and 0.2 ITB. Want to get Kun in soon, if for Vardy then its 2 if not 3 transfers. Obviously concerns over Jones and soon Bavies when Rose is up to speed?

All have left my team over the last 3 GWs.

Wait for news on Jones. Could be out for a few weeks (cheaper in time for United's easier fixtures?)

Mkhi - I'd lose. Has looked poor of late. City mids firing & Richarlison is another option.

Lukaku - I think now is a good time to drop (at least temporarily). Suffers from lack of Pogba & Mkhi's form. Isolated up top. Not the easiest run of fixtures.

Davies - I'd probably hold for the moment. Rotation will become a worry, and I have got rid of him for that reason (but only as I've had the luxury of a WC).
