Burnley claim a narrow Monday night victory over Newcastle in an uninspiring match which rewards investors in the Clarets defence.

Here’s the Scout Notes from the final encounter of Gameweek 10…

Pope shines once again

Many Fantasy managers went into the Turf Moor clash hoping for clean sheets all round, with Newcastle United’s goalkeeper Rob Elliot the most owned player on show as part of 26.4% of squads.

But it was his opposite number who caught the eye.

Nick Pope has made six starts for Burnley since replacing skipper Tom Heaton against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 4. Over that time, Pope has made 31 saves, gathering seven save points and six bonus – more than any other FPL goalkeeper.

Another five saves accompanied last night’s display, as Pope picked up two bonus points via Burnley’s fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

Priced at 4.5 and with encouraging fixtures to come (sou SWA ARS bou lei WAT STK), Pope sits second in our current Watchlist rankings, just behind Elliot, the 4.2 option. He looks the go-to candidate for those looking to spend more than the Magpies stopper.

Indeed, Pope and Elliot work surprisingly well as a pairing, offering effective rotation until Gameweek 20.

Mee excels in Clarets back four

It was Ben Mee who picked up the maximum bonus points from Monday’s shut-out.

The centre-back top-scored for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) with 15 and even supplied a key pass to score 32 in the Bonus Points System (BPS).

That left the rest of the Clarets back four trailing, though Matt Lowton shared two bonus points with Pope on 31 in the BPS.

Both Mee and fellow central defender James Tarkowski – also 4.5 – are in the top three defenders for CBI with Brighton’s Shane Duffy.

However, Mee looks to have the edge in the BPS having made 47 recoveries to Tarkowski’s 27. He also boasts 10 shots on goal, with nine in the box compared with his centre-back partner’s five efforts.

Stephen Ward still tops the Burnley ranks for bonus points on seven and leads the way in total BPS, though he has previously relied on open play crosses and key passes to stand out. He was subdued in that respect on Monday night, with just two failed crosses and one key pass supplied.

Little joy for Newcastle attack

Rafa Benitez will surely have concerns on his side’s failure to break down the Burnley defence.

Indeed, while the Magpies have amassed a reasonable 46 shots over the last four Gameweeks, they are the only team to have failed to conjure a single big chance – or gilt-edged opportunity – over that period.

This hardly promotes investment in their attacking assets, with both Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu fading rapidly as fourth midfielder solutions. The pair boast just one assist apiece from their last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joselu has struggled to compete as a cut-price third striker option. He has registered five shots from his last four Gameweek starts, with just one effort on target – the rather fortunate strike against Liverpool in Gameweek 7.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Realistically it's the absolute ceiling of jobs he'll be offered from where he is now. He won't prove he can win things at Burnley, and the top 4 or 5 clubs wouldn't go near him without that (certainly not after how Moyes turned out at Man Utd).

Lukaku will replace whoever is left after the int break.

I'd wait until after tomorrow's game. Depending on how much Aguero/Jesus plays will probably determine who's in the line up on the weekend. If Jesus doesn't play much then ditch Lacazette, if he does then ditch Jesus.

      1. Dickie1898
        • 11 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

Thing is, line ups aren't always based on how many mins players have played in recent games especially with big games like these and an upcoming int break. Pep will pick his side on a tactical basis in order to win the game as he sees it, which none of us can predict for sure, so I'll be ignoring mins played in this instance.

2FT so Lacazette to Kane once he is back fit but who else to bring in....

          Azpi easy - baps/CS/goal/assist

    3. Jsadler95

Otamendi definitely as I think Pep will solidify his team knowing he'll probably not score as many as normal against Arsenal
Zaha because he's got the quality to get a goal against Spurs
Ward because Southampton struggle to score and Burnley are good defensively.

Azpi misses because I think United will be too good for Chelsea though likely a 1-0,2-1 sort of game
Daniels misses because I still don't personally trust Bournemouth enough yet.

      1. Deulofail

Oh, I'd get Salah in for Silva/Sterling

Keepers, midfield and strikers look great. My only concern would be Trippier not being nailed, Cedric's fixtures go to shit after this game week and Otamendi is 1 yellow from a suspension (but that's not a big deal). I'd say if you can, do Trippier for Alderweireld and Then Cedric for a 4.5 maybe Simpson or Moreno? Other than that, looks fantastic.

I think Trippier is only a bad pick if you have a bad bench.

Good point. Might be a canny pick considering

Yeah I think he's really good value and one of the few players worth the rotation risk. He's only come on as sub once the entire season so the chances are you will get your automatic sub points.

Generally for the next few weeks:
    A) Daniels and De Gea
    B) Pope and Bailly

I have Jones for the record.

This is the problem I'm having haha. Pope > Daniels for points but De Gea > Bailly for points.

      A looks juicy asf.

B is good too, but I'm guessing you already have Ward/Mee? Would rather double up on United than Burnley.

I don't have Ward or Mee that's why I want to keep Pope you see. B gives me an option of keeping a cheap Burnley defender/goalkeeper while doubling up on United. A doubles me up on United and gives me attacking threat of Daniels but with no Burnley cover. Rather Daniels than Ward personally but Pope interests me because of how many saves he makes, giving him plenty of BPS and save points and he rotates really well with Elliot.

Looking to replace Jesus and Vardy over the coming weeks.

Which would you ditch first, thinking Jesus to Abraham this week then Vardy to Lukaku/Aguero for GW12.

Maybe to late for Sane up about 0.6

Both could be great double up though.

          Silver and Sane works well.

          Strengthen bench for possible rotation.

He's only up 0.2 from the start of the season. He dropped before he rose.

any suggestions on how I should use my FT this week (usual caveat of Kane injury news) 1.5itb

    pope, elliot
    jones, stones, Davies, ward, mbemba
    silva, RLC, Carrol, salah, Richarlison
    kun, kane, vardy

A - upgrade mbemba to Daniels to have a 3 playing subs
    B - Davies to luiz
    C - vardy to firmino
    D - stones to luiz
    E - save for 2ft into IB
