Suspensions

The FA have this morning charged Oumar Niasse with the “successful deception of a match official”, deeming that he dived in the area in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, earning his side a penalty kick for their opening goal.

The three-man FA panel have concluded that there was “overwhelming evidence” that Niasse had dived as part of the incident and the striker could now face a two-match suspension as a result.

He has until 6pm this evening to respond to the decision. Should the charge be upheld, he will sit out Everton’s trip to Southampton in Gameweek 13, along with the midweek home clash with West Ham the following Wednesday.

Niasse becomes the first player to be charged by the FA’s new trial-by-video initiative, aimed at reducing the “simulation” of fouls in the game.

Saturday’s penalty came about when Palace defender Scott Dann was penalised by referee Anthony Taylor when there appeared to be minimal contact with Niasse.

The striker himself was not shy coming forward attempting to justify his action.

“People are saying I fell down too easily, I don’t know about that but the game needed it, and I did it. When I felt contact on my body all I had to do was go to the floor because I was running quickly. That is all I did, and for me it is a good reaction.”

Those ill-fated words are unlikely to have helped Niasse’s cause.

The news comes as a major blow to his new army of owners, with some 124,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers investing in the Senegalese ahead of Gameweek 13 following his 10-point haul at Palace.

Niasse took his tally to five goals and an assist from just seven appearances following the Palace draw, pushing his claims for the budget third striker slot in our line-ups.

His FPL price had increased to 5.0 as a result of the weekend investment, though with a potential ban in place, it could once again sink back to 4.9 over the coming days.

Much will depend on whether his 5.3% ownership are able to absorb his absence and keep him benched for the next two Gameweeks.

If banned, Niasse will be joined on the sidelines by three players who topple from the suspension tightrope.

Isaac Hayden of Newcastle United, Oriol Romeu of Southampton and Tom Davies of Everton all picked up their fifth bookings of the season at the weekend to sit out Gameweek 13.

Meanwhile, Simon Francis of Bournemouth will also miss the weekend fixture – the Cherries’ trip to Swansea City – after he earned a one-match suspension for earning two yellow cards in the win over Huddersfield.

The Suspension Tightrope widget keeps a tally of cards accumulated from all domestic matches across the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League. It is available under the Watchlist rankings in your right sidebars or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet.

It currently shows those players one booking away from a one-match ban.

Just a reminder that players must avoid five yellow cards over their respective team’s first 19 Premier League matches in order to avoid a suspension. Similarly, they must steer clear of 10 cautions over their side’s 32 opening top-flight matches to prevent a ban.

For Fantasy managers, this means that Gameweek 19 – on December 23 – is currently the curfew for five yellow cards. Players, therefore, have seven matches yet to play before the threshold moves to 10 yellow cards.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

My gameweek is proof that taking or not taking hits is entirely dependent on whether your team needs them, and whether you can spot the immediate returns (and get a bit lucky).

This GW I was stuck with a GK pairing of Forster and Elliot, who were both away to free-scoring teams. I had Otamendi who wasn't going to play and I didn't fancy first sub Monreal against Spurs or Vardy against City. So I took a -8 and brought in Pope, Daniels and Morata.

    Result:

+6 up from Pope (minus Forster's points)
+3 up from Daniels (minus Monreal) I got lucky with Daniels' bonus points and Nacho's yellow card
+7 up from Morata (minus Vardy)

    =+16

So taking a -8 this week has actually left me 8 points better off, plus I caught price rises and drops, plus my team is in better shape than it would otherwise have been because I brought in players with good fixtures.

This isn't a brag or EVEN a humble brag (heaven forbid), but proof that identifying the right time to take hits to improve your points score is a central part of the game. It's no use saying "the top players only take x number of hits per season so I need to stick around that limit"... do what your team, the form and fixtures tell you.

I recognise that I have taken hits that have not paid off, so these points go some way to balancing themselves out, but my point is we shouldn't be scared to 'invest', since immediate gains are possible. I'll keep track of all future hits and see if I can provide more evidence, further down the line, that sensible hit taking (if anything I do can be considered sensible) is something we should all embrace.

Do you think it’s worth taking a hit with this defence this week?

      Luiz - Davies - VVD - Ward - Wimmer

Alonso, Ota & Maguire all looking great options and I could really do with getting rid of atleast 2 from Luiz, Davies & VVD. They’ve been stinking my team up.

I'd need to see your whole team, Karan. I have concerns about all of them except Ward, TBH, but if you go three at the back you might just be OK. Luiz is a no-no, Davies is unpredictable. VVD may do OK against Everton but the Toffees have started to find the net recently.

It probably sounds obvious but the trick is to choose the best team you think you're going to be able to field and then think whether any of those players are more than about 66% likely to return 1-2 points. If those players also have bad fixtures or are in and out of the team, and there are replacement players who you think are almost guaranteed 6 points, then it's sensible to remove them, as long as the incoming player also has good form or fixtures. So, even if you don't get the immediate return then you can treat bringing them in as if it were a mini wildcard.

          Pope
          Luiz • Davies • VVD
          Salah • Sane • Richa • Silva • RLC
          Kane • Morata

          (Elliot / Ward / Wimmer / Niasse!)

Definitely doing Luiz to Otamendi if no injuries midweek.

Davies will probaly also get benched if he starts midweek.

I think I’ll be able to get 11 starters but not sure if they will get he points. But it also mean I’ll be stuck with Davies or Luiz for another couple of weeks.

Can take a hit to do Davies/Luiz to Maguire (-4) as he has some good fixtures coming up and might just be worth it.

Sorry I meant I’ll be stuck Davies or VVD if I don’t take a hit this week. Luiz is going out for sure this week.

Totally! You take a -4 to remove 2 defenders and assuming you go for someone who has a high probability of giving you a CS he will return the -4 then and there!

Thinking of doing Luiz & Davies/VVD to Otamendi & Maguire (-4) for this week.

Next week will have money in the bank for Alonso.

It's really tough because if Bavies does start he has a plum fixture. If you don't think he'll start then the -4 is justified. I like the Otamendi pick, Maguire should be a solid choice too.

I should add that I have already deducted Forster, Monreal and Vardy's points, so the +16 is net.

Totally with you there, i took a crazy -12 hit last week:

Foster, Eriksen, Davies, Vardy out (6points)

Speroni, Salah, Daniels, Morata in (35points)

      NET extra points +17

obviously it's not sensible to take this many hits every week, but when you see strategic moves that you think will pay off over a few weeks, then it can be worth the gamble

if i hadn't changed captain at last minute from Salah to Kane then it would have been net +32 points

Good post. Generally my hits have worked out well this season and this week was the same.

Davies (1) and Ritchie (2) out for -4pts
Daniels (8) and Zaha (7) in for an immediate 8pt gain and a better balanced squad.

      Word.

Everything you said is - to me- common sense, and yet there's an entire breed of FFS'ers that refuse to countenance the risk / reward of a hit, as if there are bonus points for not taking hits

OTOH, I took an 8 point hit this weekend to remove Hazard, Vardy & Luiz for Sane, Lukaku & Daniels. That cost me 6 points not 8 due, but still smarts a little. Thanks Hazard

Yup a good window for non owners to jump on the bandwagon if he starts and scores next week.

I'm happy if he's banned as it means I don't have to rush to get him in I know I'll get him for 5m and can make other moves in the meantime until he's back.

Currently have no moves to make pending Jones' fitness

WC Team - every penny spent

    Elliot (Pope)
    Moreno Otamendi Daniels (Jones Mee)
    Salah Sané Pogba Groß (Surman)
    Kane Morata Wilson

    Is nice?

Start Pope. Elliot unlikely to keep a clean sheet and Pope should get some save pts

Btw absolutely unbelievable CM wasn't given that assist yesterday. Actually it isn't with opta previous record but wow.

Even if dunk got the final touch after choupo as mark mentioned it should be an assist in FPl rules as his header was clearly targeted towards zouma.

or even if it was targeted towards goal, it would be an assist as its a blocked shot?

Yeah it's absolutely ridiculous fpl are looking to opta for this when they award random assists all the time

Looked like it came off the defender to me, hard to call but maybe should give benefit of the doubt to attackers

Everton's Oumar Niasse charged for 'Successful Deception of a Match Official' by FA in game against Crystal Palace. Has until 6pm to respond. #SSN

That's what I did when hemed got banned (except I kept him not bought him) someone else stepped up for Brighton and he got dropped to bench

It's not worth the risk especially as teams like city will rotate in the next 2. Games being 3 days apart

excuse to make a slightly niasse related point.
can't see unsworth getting the everton job. just look at his turnaround last 2 games. owners/decision makers want to see everton inputs which could at least appear to be down to his organisation.

watford: at 2-0 down gomes goes off injured. replaced by keeper making english football debut, who didn't even know he was going to feature so didn't have the pre-match warm-up to prepare physically and mentally etc. key factor also is gomes is watford's captain and chief communicator at the back. holebas and the sub keeper get their wires crossed calamtiously, niasse nips in to make it 2-1. everton win a corner. calvert-lewin heads in inside the 6 yard box. gomes' arms are about 6 yards long! 2-2.
holebas slips. a freak incident, but valid pen. 3-2. cleverley misses a pen, 3-2.

palace: niasse cons the ref (now officially cons 😉 ). 1-1.
speroni and dann create a mess out of absolutely nothing, niasse makes it 2-2.

just about the only everton input was gueye harrying dann and arguably forcing the error. unsworth's doing? arguable.
they've really got away with murder last couple. unsworth would be a terrible appointment imo.

He just have to mention the Richarlison dive and he will be fine. Dno if they are clever enough to fight it with though

I am a fan of the whole diving-ban FA thing, but personally find it hilarious how Richarlison did NOT get a ban, and now Niasse will prolly be banned. Atleast Dann touched Niasse.. And yes i own Niasse

There was contact from Bellerin on Richarlison and, for me, I think this one is more blatant and I can see why three out of three would put this down as simulation.

Someone had to be first I guess and Niasse did himself no favours by speaking out post-match. Little chance any appeal will succeed I reckon - I doubt they'll try.

One of the knock-ons this creates however, is that it "officially confirms" those players who dive in the eyes of the officials. Niasse will get some solid treatment from CB's on his return I reckon.

Alright. Point taken and well-argued! Still think it is a slippery slope, and it will bite them soon enough. What happens when Morata does his 'Dying Swan' vs. Pool next weekend? Do they really ban Mr. Morata for 2 games? 😉

    Team currently looks as follows

    Begovic/Speroni

    Jones/Mee/Otamendi/Francis/Hunemier
    Eriksen/Salah/Sane/Carroll/Delph
    Lukaku/Kane/Tammy

Still have WC and 2.2m in the bank. Should I be wildcarding this week?

Personally I would as I'd want to ship Tammy, Carroll, Francis, Hunemeier and Eriksen. Potentially even Lukaku as well. Could give it one more week maybe, and just do a free this week. Get the Liverpool game out the way and stock up on a couple of Chelsea players and make a decision on Kane

Yeah, like we say above, if you've the bench, then you're fine. Only drawback would be if you bought for 5.0 and he now drops. He probably won't.

Chances are there will be a new bandwagon/ injury by then that makes Niasse an ancient memory....but at that price point perhaps viable...
