Manchester United laboured to a 1-0 win over a dogged Brighton, with Romelu Lukaku blanking once more as managers’ heads turn to other big-ticket options.

Romelu Lukaku’s yo-yo ownership this season is on the fall again after a fifth failure in six matches, as a good proportion of his owners now prepare a move for Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata.

The Belgian’s blank against a determined Brighton was a big blow for the 1.3 million (24.8%) Fantasy Premier League bosses who handed him the armband, although it was perhaps telling that just 19 of the top 100 managers captained him, while 30 went for Harry Kane.

Lukaku did manage five shots, with two on target, although four of those efforts were with his head as United struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.

The worry is that the big striker’s downturn is now spreading to home matches. Prior to Saturday’s blank, he’d only missed out once at Old Trafford in six matches.

An upcoming trip to Arsenal, followed by the Manchester derby, might not be the fixtures for Lukaku to emerge from a slump that has seen him passed by Morata and caught by Harry Kane at the top of the forwards’ scoring chart.

Just one goal in six Gameweeks has prompted early sales ahead of a trip to Watford on Tuesday. Lukaku is the most sold asset so far, with more than 50% of those sales heading to Morata.

The possibility of more midweek minutes for Zlatan Ibrahimovic is only likely to accelerate the abandonment of FPL’s most-owned player.

Low key Pogba

If momentum is eluding Lukaku, it was very much with Paul Pogba heading into the Brighton match, with more than 380,000 new managers expecting great things from the Frenchman.

What they got were rumours of an overnight absence from the traditional pre-match Lowry Hotel meet-up and his manager insisting he wouldn’t be playing any more than 70 minutes.

And even though the midfielder ended up completing the full 90, it was a shift considerably more low-key than his explosive 12-point return from injury against Newcastle.

Not that any of that has dissuaded yet more managers from acquiring Pogba with the Watford match in mind – he’s already the fourth most popular purchase of Gameweek 14, claiming more than 13,000 new owners.

And it would seem that when he’s fit, he plays, which could be crucial in the hectic weeks to come.

De Gea stretches lead

In the continued absence of Phil Jones, any number of United defensive assets are continuing to pile on the points.

Top of the shop is David de Gea, whose ninth clean sheet (including six in seven home matches) took him a massive 18 points clear of the goalkeeping pack.

His hefty 5.8 price tag is clearly not putting off his 42% ownership – only two players are in more FPL squads – while another expensive pick, Antonio Valencia (6.7) is now just five points shy of Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta in the defenders’ standings.

We can’t be sure when Jones – who dropped in price to 5.4 overnight – might return, but Chris Smalling has now made seven straight starts and costs the same as his injured England colleague, so defensive options across the budgets are still available at United.

Gross shines to claim maximum

Brighton’s biggest Fantasy success story, Pascal Gross, continued to punch above his 5.9 price tag with a five-point display Old Trafford despite failing to fetch attacking returns.

Instead, the 19.7%-owned midfielder hoovered up maximum bonus points from a display involving three key passes and five tackles won.

Gross now has 14 bonus points for the season – more than any other midfielder and matched only by Kane.

He is the fifth most signed player so far heading into Gameweek 14, just behind Pogba.

The Fantasy gods were less kind to Brighton defenders Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy, who were equally impressive against United but received none of the rewards.

Dunk even had the ignominy of scoring the decisive own goal, his second of the season. The first came against Man City.

Meanwhile Duffy – along with striker Glenn Murray – picked up their fourth bookings and are now one shy of a one-match suspension. The “local derby” with Crystal Palace now looms for the pair, with Murray facing his former employers.

Beyond that, Brighton’s schedule is hardly accommodating – they face Liverpool and Spurs in the next four Gameweeks – though they continue to impress, while Gross’ stock will likely remain strong.

Fabianski, Jesus and Vardy > Courtois, Morata, Wilson (4) ?

    Courtois
    Alonso - Daniels - Mee
    Salah - DSilva - Richarlison - Gross
    Morata - Kane - Wilson

    Elliott - Jones - Mbemba - TCarroll

Leaves me with 2.0m in the bank to fix Mbemba (and perhaps Jones or Carroll) in the coming weeks.

Thoughts on Christensen people? Think he's going under the radar on here. Seems to be 1st choice at the moment. Conte's comment on him 'it's Christensen's time now' reinforces this.

Alonso and Azpi will obviously score more pts but when you consider the cost, Alpi + 4.5 = Christensen + 5.9m defender (as the current prices stand), is he a good pick?

I’m considering him to fund hazard

Even if he's rested for Swansea, it's likely hell play again against Newcastle. Luiz will take the Champions League tie and Christensen will be back for the following PL game

      2. Pep says

        8 years, 3 months ago

Ya nice 0.6m saving. I'm looking to upgrade Clark. 1 pt from the last 2 games so even if Christensen misses the odd game, it's not like the 4.5m nailed on player is gonna get many points anyway. Have Duffy and Ward aswell so Ota + Christensen over Alonso and Clark for me seems to have much more potential. Ota has goal yet and Christensen scored in Champs league so he has goal threat too perhaps. Must watch more of him but he seems like a great pick right now

      1. Pep says
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Why though. I have Ward and Duffy. Clark is the other 4.5m. He's scored 1 pt over 2 games. Duffy hasn't done much better. The 4.5m are great but clean sheets have started to dry up as they always do this time of the season

You've named one player less than 5.9 (albeit a good option), hardly "plenty choice [sic]". I still don't rate Christensen as a choice though, as I think he'll be rotated. Fill your boots though.

                • 10 Years
                8 years, 3 months ago

It's only an extra point 1. Most of the good 4.5m options are 4.6m or higher now anyway so it's neither here nor there.

    3. Freddo
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 3 months ago

For 5.4 you might aswell get Courtois and not worry about rotation, same price.

Ya but Pope at 4.5m has more potential than other 4.5m defenders due to baps and save pts

        1. Freddo
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

It's simply a case if Pope V Mee and Courtois V Christensen.

Courtois and Mee looks rock solid and rotation headache free.

          1. Pep says
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 3 months ago

But I own Ward and Duffy. It's Clark I'm looking to take out. So many 4.5m defenders in people's teams you shouldn't use the best 4.5m for this scenario, you should use the worst 4.5m player you have

            1. Freddo
              • 8 Years

You asked for thoughts in general not thoughts exclusive to your set up.

Thought in general is what I typed, your team structure changes the dynamic of the whole topic.

Just not sure why anyone would spend the same money on Christensen and worry if he'll be rotated or not when the keeper is there and playing every minute of every game.

              1. Pep says
                • 10 Years
                8 years, 3 months ago

Because he can get in the bonus and has scored a goal in the Champs League. Luiz and Cahill have also scored plenty goals so he will inevitably get chances.

I did use my example but lots of teams have2 or 3 4.5m defenders and I'm wonder is their better value in losing the weakest one (Clark for me, maybe Dann for others, Hegazi, Brighton) and getting Christiansen and having 2 premium defenders, instead of one 'elite' premium and a rubbish 4.5m defender

And I appreciate your point of view, I'm just typing out my thoughts and they seem valid to me.

    a) Haz, Groß and Jesus
    or
    b) Morato, Groß and Sane

Would go for a) purely because of Sane's apparent security of starts over Jesus.

Can't you go Hazard, Gross and Sane?

Lukaku is funding the change, so I require a forward in.

    Elliot Fabianski
    Azpi Ward Francis Mbemba Malone
    Hazard Richalison Sterling Salah Chupo
Kane Lukaku Lodapo (2 free transfers)

    Couple of quick questions:
Who do I sell during this period: Richalison or Chupo? I believe Richa can even score against the big teams which Chupo cant. But then again Chupo did so against United and playing striker is what made me buy him. Right now I am leaning more towards Richa because even if I sell him I'll want him back after 3 gameweeks. I'll be selling for Salah.

Reverting to 4-5-1: Very unpopular I know. But to field a terrific mid and decent backline, I am thinking about going with just Kane up top with 2 absolute bench fodders. The other option is someone like Wilson or Murray and I don't see much value there. This brings me to my final question.

Defender: Bringing in Salah + Bench Fodder leaves me with 7.3 or 6.5 itb for a defender. Salah+ Wilson leaves me with 5.8 or 5 itb. (depending on the transfer of either Richa or Chupo). Please advice.

      Keep Richarlison.

If you are going for pure bench fodder up front in a 4-5-1, you'll probably suffer when teams rotate over the festive period.

I have Moreno, TC and a 3.9m non-playing defender on the bench. Since TC is not nailed and I have a couple rotation risks (Sterling, Alonso), is it worth doing TC to RLC to sure up the bench?

Check Sterling's minutes today but I think I would still save.

I probably would. I rate RLC though I wont be getting him this week. Ive been pretty bang on this season with cheaper differentials apart from Joselu

first 2 for free even better. not sure over firmino, he was dropped yesterday as well. think it’s better to downgrade him and upgrade rest of team.

but it’s up to you, not sure on the hit for it
