Manchester United laboured to a 1-0 win over a dogged Brighton, with Romelu Lukaku blanking once more as managers’ heads turn to other big-ticket options.

Romelu Lukaku’s yo-yo ownership this season is on the fall again after a fifth failure in six matches, as a good proportion of his owners now prepare a move for Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata.

The Belgian’s blank against a determined Brighton was a big blow for the 1.3 million (24.8%) Fantasy Premier League bosses who handed him the armband, although it was perhaps telling that just 19 of the top 100 managers captained him, while 30 went for Harry Kane.

Lukaku did manage five shots, with two on target, although four of those efforts were with his head as United struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.

The worry is that the big striker’s downturn is now spreading to home matches. Prior to Saturday’s blank, he’d only missed out once at Old Trafford in six matches.

An upcoming trip to Arsenal, followed by the Manchester derby, might not be the fixtures for Lukaku to emerge from a slump that has seen him passed by Morata and caught by Harry Kane at the top of the forwards’ scoring chart.

Just one goal in six Gameweeks has prompted early sales ahead of a trip to Watford on Tuesday. Lukaku is the most sold asset so far, with more than 50% of those sales heading to Morata.

The possibility of more midweek minutes for Zlatan Ibrahimovic is only likely to accelerate the abandonment of FPL’s most-owned player.

Low key Pogba

If momentum is eluding Lukaku, it was very much with Paul Pogba heading into the Brighton match, with more than 380,000 new managers expecting great things from the Frenchman.

What they got were rumours of an overnight absence from the traditional pre-match Lowry Hotel meet-up and his manager insisting he wouldn’t be playing any more than 70 minutes.

And even though the midfielder ended up completing the full 90, it was a shift considerably more low-key than his explosive 12-point return from injury against Newcastle.

Not that any of that has dissuaded yet more managers from acquiring Pogba with the Watford match in mind – he’s already the fourth most popular purchase of Gameweek 14, claiming more than 13,000 new owners.

And it would seem that when he’s fit, he plays, which could be crucial in the hectic weeks to come.

De Gea stretches lead

In the continued absence of Phil Jones, any number of United defensive assets are continuing to pile on the points.

Top of the shop is David de Gea, whose ninth clean sheet (including six in seven home matches) took him a massive 18 points clear of the goalkeeping pack.

His hefty 5.8 price tag is clearly not putting off his 42% ownership – only two players are in more FPL squads – while another expensive pick, Antonio Valencia (6.7) is now just five points shy of Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta in the defenders’ standings.

We can’t be sure when Jones – who dropped in price to 5.4 overnight – might return, but Chris Smalling has now made seven straight starts and costs the same as his injured England colleague, so defensive options across the budgets are still available at United.

Gross shines to claim maximum

Brighton’s biggest Fantasy success story, Pascal Gross, continued to punch above his 5.9 price tag with a five-point display Old Trafford despite failing to fetch attacking returns.

Instead, the 19.7%-owned midfielder hoovered up maximum bonus points from a display involving three key passes and five tackles won.

Gross now has 14 bonus points for the season – more than any other midfielder and matched only by Kane.

He is the fifth most signed player so far heading into Gameweek 14, just behind Pogba.

The Fantasy gods were less kind to Brighton defenders Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy, who were equally impressive against United but received none of the rewards.

Dunk even had the ignominy of scoring the decisive own goal, his second of the season. The first came against Man City.

Meanwhile Duffy – along with striker Glenn Murray – picked up their fourth bookings and are now one shy of a one-match suspension. The “local derby” with Crystal Palace now looms for the pair, with Murray facing his former employers.

Beyond that, Brighton’s schedule is hardly accommodating – they face Liverpool and Spurs in the next four Gameweeks – though they continue to impress, while Gross’ stock will likely remain strong.

Any advice on my FT this week? I have 1.3 in the bank

    Pope // Elliot
    Azpilicuta, Ward, Jones, Moreno //Mbabpe
    Pogba, Richarlison, Silva, Salah
    Kane, Lukaku, Niasse

    I'm thinking Lukaku to Morata

Have a feeling Lacazette could become a factor if he scores today..

    HUD MUN sou whu NEW

    Tempted to swap for Lukaku
    as I already own Morata
Arsenal have the most rest between fixtures at Christmas should help with rotation..

    On pens also ..

You’re probably right, but iv set out with 3 big hitters on my Wildcard Gw6 , its served me well

Aguero/Jesus would be my preferred replacement also, not nice saying it but it would probably take an injury to one of them for me to invest

Özil Sanchez Lacazette when playing together have great points potential

    Worth WCing?
    2FT 0ITB

    Pope (Elliot)
Jones - Duffy - Ward (Naughton - Mason)
Salah - Silva - Richarlison - Zaha (TC)
    Kane - Lukaku - Morata

My thinking was this for -4:
    Kaku -> Niasse
    Zaha -> Hazard
    Jones -> Azpi

Or with a WC I could tidy up the team nicely for the run into January.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the insight on Zaha. I watched the Palace game a few weeks back and he was bossing. I suppose RLC's output for his value was tempting. Appreciate it.

Just the -4 is fine. Great team

Consider Christensen/Zappa instead of Azpi. Gives you funds for Silva to Sane

That’s fair. To be honest, i can’t see conte rotating his centre back partnership often. Managers generally don’t do that as it creates instability.

    Executive Decision:

    - Hold on Richarlison, tough two fixtures ahead then gravy till New Year.

    - Hold on Grob, if he can be top player even against Man U then he is a long term option.

    - See if Jones play Watford otherwise replace him with a Chelsea defender.

    - Further to the above point, may roll over a FT/Hit for GW14/15 so I can afford a pricier Chelsea defender to take me thru to GW28

    - Pray that Niasse and Wilson are seen for what they are and hopefully DCL hauls today to change the Cheap Forward landscape.

        Keep the faith.

I am at crossroads with Jones for quite some time now, rather than acting on spur of moment will try leave it objective (I.e. if no start against Watford then to execute the master plan)

I have been an early advocate of Shaqiri, he has form and fixtures thru to NY (aside from one match Liverpool)

        1. Freddo

Also keeping Jones, eventually he'll be back and will still be the cheapest way into their rock solid defence.

He'll play 90 or 0 mins, just have a strong first defensive sub and ride it out.

I will have to leave it to fate to make my decisions for me.

If he plays Watford, I will keep and bench as a few toughies but then tasty till end of Jan.

I do need more Chelsea coverage though...whether it be a defender or Hazard...looks like the pivotal point for me is whether Jones play Watford

I'm finding it really hard to justify Hazard, he does look great but not sure he's any better than the cheaper mids from City or Salah.

Might double up at the back with Morata and try to take advantage of their fixtures that way.

If he starts smashing the C polls then I'll have to rethink that.

Also think Jones could be getting saved for the Arsenal and City games.

I feel the exact same way. I feel driven by a price drop on Jones too. I bought him on wildcard in GW 12 so I haven't even got a game out of him. Stupid to get him on Wildcard I regret it now. I brought him in as I've been having a decent season but feel like every time Jones was keeping a clean sheet which was most weeks he was really debating my progress in rank.

Did same thing and he rose a lil bit but back to purchase price now...

I can afford one more price drop too...

My gut feeling is to keep the faith a little longer, FPL freddo fair points hope you are right!

If Morata price was not so on par with Hazard the story would be different...since I have Morata it won't be end of the world if I don't get Hazard

The only way to get Hazard is really to swap out Sane...let's see how Man City do today...

Best way to get Hazard in? Or should I just do Jesus to Morata?

    Foster, Elliot
    Otamendi, Monreal, Mee, Simpson, Daniels
    Richarlison, Sané, Salah, Eriksen, RLC
    Kane, Jesus, Abraham

I went with Morata simply because I think the only viable strikers in this game are Kane, Morata and a cheap enabler like Niasse. Hazard is great but there are plenty of alternatives that are doing just as well – Salah and Sane, to name but two. Pogba is back now and could come close to matching him. Strikers meanwhile everyone has been disappointing: Aguero and Jesus are rotation risks, Lukaku never looks like hauling, Kane is blanking unlike ever before. I just can't see past Morata.

Son has turned himself into Spurs version of Batshuyi - second touch is always a shot.

It's hardly a wonder Kane struggles so much with him featuring so heavily in the matchday squad this season.

Son was a far more prolific assister last season...

finaly some well timed good furtunes - moved from 600k OR to 71K OR in two game weeks, and no i have an issue that feels important:

    Elliot, Pickford
    kola, daniels, duffy, ward, naughton
    Hazard, salah. silva, richarlison, gross
    Kane, vardy, wilson

    1.4M ITB

ideally i would like to turn vardy into morata, but i'm 0.6 short. how do i do it and is it worth a hit? (silva to zaha? richa to RLC? richa to choupa?)

maybe the best thing is just to save a transfer, see what happens and swoop in on more chelsea assest with two free transfers?

He has also been far better away from home and never gets a bap despite his great returns record. I may be mad but RLC is hitting some form at the same time as Palaces fixtures shift. As a 4th/5th mid RLC may offer better value short term.

    How involved was Loftus-Cheek yesterday?

Have him and Zaha and bringing Hazard for one of them - Zaha is proven reliable points scorer but Loftus-Cheek could be amazing value if he’s going to be a reliable goal threat.
