Scout Notes – Sanchez Denies Battling Clarets

A contentious win for Arsenal at Turf Moor sheds a favourable light on key players from both sides, while a Charlie Austin brace reinvigorates Southampton as Everton’s season lurches ever closer to the disastrous.

Regardless of the rights or wrongs of the last-gasp penalty Arsenal required to find a way past Burnley, the Gunners are finding some form and their stars edging towards Fantasy recognition.

Inevitably, some managers will consider flirting with today’s match-winner Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean has now scored back-to-back goals and has three strikes and an assist from his last five starts.

Yes, Sanchez surely only took the penalty because Alexandre Lacazette was off the pitch, while his 11.8 price tag is still far too steep given the alternative options screaming for attention – not least Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

But his class is not in doubt, while the Gunners’ next five fixtures (HUD MUN sot whu NEW) offer plenty of potential for more of the same from a player who, for some, could prove a devastating differential.

While Sanchez will be a stretch too far for most, Aaron Ramsey is enjoying an equally consistent five-match run. Today’s assist was his third from those five outings, with a couple of goals adding further lustre to a midfielder priced at just 7.0.

It’s also back-to-back clean sheets for a defence that has benefitted enormously from the return of Shkodran Mustafi (5.4).

In the seven matches he’s started this season, Arsenal have conceded just a single goal.

That upcoming schedule looks particularly promising for the Gunners’ backline, with even the visit from Man United offering the promise of returns should Jose Mourinho decide to revert to his now familiar negative tactics when facing top-four rivals.

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil missed Sunday’s victory through illness, with Arsene Wenger confirming post-match that the playmaker “will be short for Wednesday” when the Gunners host Huddersfield.

No luck, but no panic for Burnley

We almost feel partly responsible for Burnley conceding the last minute spot-kick, having talked up Lee Mason’s fondness for penalties in Thursday’s Men In Black.

Despite that cruel last-minute twist, there was again much to admire about the Clarets’ defensive work. They were seconds away from a fourth straight shut-out, ensuring that our faith in their backline remains intact.

Not that faith was entirely the order of the day – a combined 504,000+ managers benched either Stephen Ward or Ben Mee for today’s clash.

The former is the most popular defender in the game, with 22.1% ownership, while his team-mate is in 12.5% of Fantasy Premier League squads, which puts him in the top ten.

Sean Dyche’s rearguard restricted Arsenal to just two shots on target, and only the two Manchester sides have conceded fewer goals than Burnley’s 10 from 13 matches this season.

The Clarets’ immediate schedule (bou lei WAT STO bri) promises more of the same.

Ward and Mee have started every single league match this campaign, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is also an ever-present since taking over from Tom Heaton in Gameweek 4.

All three remain sound investments for a hectic period when nailed-on starters will be at a premium.

Austin powers Saints win

Southampton had failed to find the net in seven matches this season prior to the visit from Everton, scoring just nine goals from 12 generally dreary encounters.

It says much for the Toffees’ meltdown mode that the Saints hit four today, though recalled striker Charlie Austin clearly deserves credit.

In his first start under Mauricio Pellegrino, the injury-prone forward scored twice and fired five shots in the box – no striker had more in Gameweek 13.

He’s owned by just 0.4%, a figure that will most likely rise on the back of Sunday’s instant impact.

But those seeing cut-price differential material in the 6.0-priced Austin might want to pause and reflect on a schedule that includes trips to Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Man United and a visit from Arsenal over the next eight Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Steven Davis (5.1) moved up to fourth in the value midfielder charts after scoring his third goal of the season, while Dusan Tadic netted for the first time since Gameweek 2.

Meanwhile, the 8.5%-owned Ryan Bertrand made amends for being part of a defence that’s kept just a single clean sheet in eight matches by providing two assists in a nine-point performance.

The Saints might well kick on from this heartening win, but, given their schedule, it would seem wise to wait until the New Year before we seriously re-consider any revival under Pellegrino.

Ineptitude and now injuries for Everton

Let’s start with the positives.

Positive, actually, because the only reason to be cheerful at Everton is the form of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who now has a goal and an assist from his last two starts.

The midfielder has the fixtures (WHU HUD new SWA) to profit further, and he might now have penalty-taking duties as well, with Leighton Baines suffering an injury in Sunday’s defeat.

But Everton are so poor at present – they’ve conceded nine goals in the last four painful days and the 28 they’ve shipped domestically is the worst record in the Premier League – that taking a punt on any of their assets looks very ill-advised.

That defence can only improve, though it might now be without both Baines and Michael Keane.

The pair limped off at St Mary’s, with David Unsworth offering a gloomy post-match assessment on both.

“Leighton has done his calf, unfortunately. We’ll probably assess him more tomorrow. We’ll reassess him, but it looks like he’s going to be struggling for Wednesday. Michael was a bit different. I don’t know whether it was concussion. He was with the doctor at the end of the game and I haven’t had the chance to speak to either yet.”

Has anyone ever managed having 8 strong forwards and alternating 3-5-2 / 3-4-3 or does it prove way too much of a benching headache?

Contemplating Carroll out for Gross instead of upgrading my 4th defender... Gross and Niasse seem to rotate quite well but I'm worried the one I bench will get a haul and I'll be kicking myself to put it mildly!!

Wouldn’t say I have a strong front 8 but I do have a budget back 7. 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 are always my preference regardless of personnel. Budget usually means I never have such a strong front 8 that causes benching headaches

  27. Time to ditch Richarlison?

Is no-one else here selling Richarlison with his upcoming poor fixtures? (MUN, TOT, bur)

Thinking of downgrading to RLC, myself, to upgrade Silva to Hazard. Keeping Zaha, and maybe selling him for Richarlison down the line, if Richarlison is still in form (after hopefully not COMPLETELY stealing the show against stronger opposition haha). There's money to be made from other players whilst Richarlison is more likely to stagnate, points-wise, at least compared to his potential.

Yeah, he got 14 points form those three games. And I would guess that was more than he deserved. I certainly wouldn't brand him fixture-proof.

'Deserved' wrong word. I mean if he played those three games a hundred times more, I expect him to get less on average. The points flattered him. Lots of players get fewer points than they 'deserve' in terms of the chances they get. I can't remember if I watched the games. Don't make assumptions mate 🙂

Why would you think he would get less if he played the same games 100 times more? He was unlucky not to score more than he did in those three games and playing against teams that come out and try and play obviously suits him as he is great on the counter attack.

I think your logic is very jonty-esque in that you are creating a narrative that doesn't exist to justify what you want to do.

              1. Deulofail
                • 8 Years
                6 years, 5 months ago

To the contrary, I think everyone else's logic is Jonty-esque in the manner you mean it. I think people are looking for attacking returns in difficult fixtures to justify keeping him because they don't have the luxury to sell him.

However, I DO have the luxury to sell him, and the choice to sell Zaha instead. I chose Richarlison instead of Zaha based on my belief that he's likely to get fewer points over the next three games. We're all prone to bias, but I don't think I've demonstrated a particularly strong case of it here.

Getting an assist against Liverpool in GW1 isn't very interesting to me, yet it forms part of most people's argument for keeping him. I could pick out the more recent 'stat' that Watford lost 6-0 to City at home. Richarlison also failed to return against Stoke at home. What does this history predict about Richarlison's chances against Spurs and United at home? I don't think it means a whole lot, but most Richarlison owners seem to think he is almost guaranteed to score.

I'm a lot more sceptical, and I'd rather take a more secure route to points than crossing my fingers and hoping. The pattern of 'consistency' we have recognised in the first 13 games doesn't predict he'll do well in these next three game. His underlying stats are good, for sure, but Watford still need to perform to allow him a good chance at bringing home an assist or a goal (and probably no bonus to go with it), which means there are plenty of cheaper players (especially defenders) who can match or outscore him in the near future.

I do recognise he is a great long-term option, but keeping him when I don't want him (and will bench him) is akin to committing to a transfer 3 weeks in advance, which isn't a great idea. But I would also be happy to keep him if I needed to take a hit in points or cash to get rid of him. He's a great player and very attacking. It's just that I wouldn't buy him right now, and I think I can get an advantage by selling.

I will keep Richarlison because I think he might get attacking returns at home against Man United—as well as having greater problems to deal with in my team. Also, I would definitely like to have him over Watford’s great run of fixtures from gameweek 17 to 21, under the assumption that he will get not get rotated much compared to players in the top teams.

However, I think you make your point well in good writing with reasonable arguments! Keep it up!

If he's still fit and looking good, I will certainly want him back GW17. Actually looking forward to that week simply because I get to buy Richarlison haha. Selling now for pragmatic reasons rather than matters of the heart! 😀

Good luck with Rich - though I hope he is no better than his usual consistent self over the next 3 GWs!

Fair enough. Not doubting the way they play, but their value is much less against the next three than against bottom half teams in general, even though they're playing good football.

I understand people's thinking in keeping him when they see no better value around him and they have limited FTs, if any. I can also see why people would want to convince themselves that he's more likely to score than he is.

I don't think there would be that many people still choosing Richarlison if on a WC, unless they play with the mentality that they must fill the mid-priced mid slot. Well, I certainly don't build my team like that, so with 2FTs and not much else to do, I have the luxury to act like I was on a WC and chose a new structure, like selling him for Hazard instead of benching him 🙂

I have no problems and two free transfers and I'm holding. Yeah he has three tough game but after that he has Palace, Huddesfield, Brighton, Leicester and Swansea.

Waste to get rid of him and bring him back in. If he blanks all three who cares. You have to think long term.

      1. Deulofail

        I care tbh 🙂

It depends on your team though. I'd rather bench RLC than Richarlison and rather play Hazard than Silva. But it's hard for many people to see beyond their own teams to admit that selling Richarlison would be good in some other circumstances than their own.

For you it's interesting with 2FTs. I presume you have other priorities and/or you bought Rich close to 6.0m. In which case, the case for keeping is stronger, for sure.

I'll be keeping him. 2-3 difficult fixtures after which a bunch of easy fixtures to capitalize on.
Can see you transferring him out if you dont have any other pressing issues.
He could score some points over those fixtures those.

I would get rid if I had an FT for it. But I don't, and there is no way I'm taking a hit to get rid of such an in-form player.

Won't have said FT till after the Spurs game, so I will actually keep him.

Fair enough. Another legitimate reason to keep him. At least you're not trying to convince yourself that he's likely to haul in the next 3 🙂

I have to admit I'm a little jealous of those who are forced to keep him. He's an exciting player and can produce at any time. The question is will he? And that we'll just have to wait and see.

Nearly did the same to get Hazard + 9.6 mid. Would have meant selling Kane for Niasse though, and Gross' fixtures aren't so bad when you have cover for his poor ones.

Good luck with that. Fixtures are a legitimate reason to sell someone. It's just a case of weighing up all the other factors too 🙂

Ended up shifting money out of defence to accommodate.

          Elliot Hart
          Ward Mee Moreno Naughton Kiko

Looks good to me. Sane or Sterling could become Richarlison GW17 or shortly after if you want some money to spend elsewhere. Personally would rather have one of them than Richarlison right now, and there are enough cheap defensive options to cover for the mid-priced defensive options (who aren't really sure-fire bets atm). Only thing I don't like is no room for Alonso or Azpi, but you can't have them all.

Already transfered him out -> Zaha before Zahas rise in price.

The way i see it. I would bench him in the next 2, where I would play Zaha. Don't expect him to deliver me many points in the next 3. I could be punished, but I follow my guts.

He is in good form, and Watford are doing great, but that does not chage the fact that they will not score many goals against MUN, TOT and bur.

I'll get him back in a couple of weeks.

Very similar to me, since I chose to sell Rich instead of Zaha. I would have benched Richarlison like you, since my team has a bit of depth.

I can't say I would have gone as far as you though: selling Richarlison for Zaha is a bold use of a transfer, but Zaha (slightly) likely to score more over the next three I'd say. 🙂

Wasn't my choice to make it a HT mate. If you don't like that people are talking about fantasy issues, perhaps you could scroll past or avoid clicking on HTs you don't want to read.

It's hardly knee-jerky given that Richarlison returned at the weekend anyway. These fixtures have been in the calendar for months.

Also if you buy Richarlison back (which you don't have to commit to now), you don't have to sell the player you buy this week. E.g. I'm buying Hazard and RLC this week, but I can buy Richarlison back by selling Zaha or Gross or Salah.

Keeping Richarlison and benching him (as I would) - or playing him and expecting very little in return - is like committing to buying him in 2 or 3 weeks even though you don't know if he'll be in form or fit.

There are other ways to look at things than your own.

First of all its knee jerky as decision is solely on fixtures and not form. For attacking players especially Form is most important especially if you proven yourself against tough opponents.
Secondly not once I mentioned you regarding poor quality of hottopic. So you need to avoid flipping out at anyone who wants FFS to maintain good quality HTs. It was suggestion for mods to avoid knee jerky hottopics and include downvote button to get the feel of community.
I have never won nor been in top1000 of FPL but even for gettin in top 10k removing cheap inform players who have 10 easy matches in next 13 is suicide.

It's a discussion point. How can you possibly know how much I factored form into the equation? More HTs are good for the site. HTs create a forum to discuss things that people want to talk about. If you don't like one topic, click on another one rather than having a go.

I agree the original post isn't the best for a HT, but only because I hadn't written it very well, not because the topic sucks. Cleary lots of people have sold Richarlison and lots of other are considering it. I'm not sure why people take such offence from other people discussing it. You don't have to be a 'casual' to sell Richarlison, and playing casually shouldn't be an insult anyway.

Thanks for taking a sentence out of your complaints to actually discuss the topic for a moment there. I happen to think that Hazard is likely to outscore Richarlison over the next three. I also have a plan in place to buy him back if he's still fit and in form in GW17 or there abouts. Perhaps read some of the discussion before replying to people's posts, and consider that the answer to some questions isn't the same for everyone, because we all have different teams and strategies.

i´m not selling, i do admit the run of fixtures you´re mentioning is not the best but Watford are quite good and they attack with real intent and are good at it. I´ve made a piece some days ago about that same fixtures, in my mind both home games looks hard on paper but if United plays defensively like they did vs Newcastle and Brighton Richarlison will score. Spurs have some problems and looks bereft of energy, lacking solidity both in the middle of park (Wanyama) and Aldeirwereld and that game could be an open affair with goals both ways. Burnley actually the game which seems most difficult to me, Burnley plays very tight and leaves little spaces so difficult for rich i would think.

Different opinions, that´s what makes this game entertaining-)

Yeah I looked into some defensive numbers for the fixtures of Richarlison vs Zaha, and it turns out that Zaha's next 3 games are only slightly easier than Richarlison's when you look at things like chances conceded from open play and shots conceded in the box over the last 4 games (home or away according to the upcoming fixture).

But then there is the general, more long-term, quality of the teams that comes into play. Spurs, United and Burnley (at home) concede fewer goals regardless of stats. So it's a balance, and I just about sided with Zaha in the end.

It's nice to have a thoughtful reply though! It's too late for me since I made the transfer, but I hope other people can benefit from your thgouhts. Cheers and good luck 🙂

good points there and Zaha surely looks like a decent swap, but as while you pointed out the teams that Watford are up against are more quality, which i agree on, but should´nt one also take into consideration the strenghts of Watford vs Palace offensively? Watford scores both home and away and generally creates lots of chances while Palace do seem good home but they been pants away, so that could be a factor to have in mind? Would be lovely to have both, but i want to strenghten my keeper and defence. If not, C. Moting would have been turned into Zaha, also having RLC does lessening the need i guess-)

Yep it's a close call. I don't think I'd sell Rich to Zaha. That might be a bit too sideways a use of a FT.

But choosing to sell one of the two was marginally easier, because I feel more comfortable having an attacking player with good fixtures than bad.

Each to their own, though. I'm gonna miss having Richarlison, but sacrifices have to be made in the name of progress! 😀

Somewhat contrary, after the Burnley game, i.e. from gameweek 17 and onwards, could it be worthwhile to double up on Watford attackers with Gray as a third striker? Gray’s stats are promising and Watford seems like an attacking side in good form!

Watford Double could be fruitful. I have Mariappa and could get 2 more players (incl Rich) for their better fixtures, since they have plenty of decent options.

I don't think Gray will keep his place though. He wasn't great at the weekend, judging by the highlights, and Deeney is back for the midweek games. A second Watford defender or midfielder is a possibility for me at some point, though, and keep an eye on Gray.

If you have bought in late and have Zaha or other replacements, sell. If bought in early, keep. Season keeper for me.

I got him at 6.0 so no need to spend 2 FT and 0.3m for just 3 weeks for a in form player.

I will Keep him as a 1st sub for this weekend. That's it!

I just saw this but just to throw myself into the same boat as you, I did,
      sterling to haz
      Richardlison to rlc.
and I had a similar option of selling another player (fabregas) but chose Richardlison instead.
I want to stress that the decision was made not cos Rich is bad, but cos I want haz in, just happens I view fab to have better short term fixtures than Rich. in any case, I have an easy swap back in 3 gameweeks or so if I need to.
plus, I sold the in-room steeling over Silva. crazy much? haha

Very similar decision process to me. It's a shame you have to word things so carefully to avoid being insulted by others. We both have the luxury of selling Zaha/Fabregas to Rich whenever we want (or perhaps earlier than I want if Rich's price rises too high haha).

I sold Silva, but then I didn't have a choice between him and another City mid. It's an interesting choice for sure. They're all prone to rotation, but you've gotta hope Silva is the most nailed and that he's currently underperforming. I am a bit worried after selling him that he's going to start getting hauls, since he's definitely capable. Good luck 🙂

You have got to be kidding me.

Exactly Jafalad. Thats why I was requesting mods to include downvote to hottopics if its difficult to avoid random knee jerky HotTopics. Plus this deulofail guy has taken his personal vendetta to go after anyone who understandbly finds this hottopic insensible and misguiding.

You can't read mate. I'm replying to sensible replies in earnest. I asked a question because I wanted to discuss something. Not only do I want to talk about it, but it's actually polite to reply to people who have take the time to comment on your own post. You're the one with a vendetta 🙂

Jafalad, I'm presuming it was hulked because it's a 'hot topic', in that people are talking about it. I can't speak for why it was THIS post, and not a more eloquent one. I am personally surprised it was hulked, since I've been informed by a mod before that questions about buying/selling individual players aren't good enough, since you could have one about every player every week. But I am glad to see it hulked because more HTs means there's more information in one place each week, like a forum.

If you don't want to read other's opinons, you're in the wrong place. That said, I can't wait for the new filtering system to be put in place to avoid this ridiculous level of controversy for talking about a something.

I don't think he will, but who knows? He might.
Can certainly see him play the last 20-30 mins if he is benched, and that could be enough for him to return some decent points.

I reckon Bilva & Jesus will start. One of Sterling, Sane and Aguero will join them 2. Someone needs to give Pep a FFS account so he can give us some hints to his starting 11
