A contentious win for Arsenal at Turf Moor sheds a favourable light on key players from both sides, while a Charlie Austin brace reinvigorates Southampton as Everton’s season lurches ever closer to the disastrous.

Regardless of the rights or wrongs of the last-gasp penalty Arsenal required to find a way past Burnley, the Gunners are finding some form and their stars edging towards Fantasy recognition.

Inevitably, some managers will consider flirting with today’s match-winner Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean has now scored back-to-back goals and has three strikes and an assist from his last five starts.

Yes, Sanchez surely only took the penalty because Alexandre Lacazette was off the pitch, while his 11.8 price tag is still far too steep given the alternative options screaming for attention – not least Chelsea’s Eden Hazard.

But his class is not in doubt, while the Gunners’ next five fixtures (HUD MUN sot whu NEW) offer plenty of potential for more of the same from a player who, for some, could prove a devastating differential.

While Sanchez will be a stretch too far for most, Aaron Ramsey is enjoying an equally consistent five-match run. Today’s assist was his third from those five outings, with a couple of goals adding further lustre to a midfielder priced at just 7.0.

It’s also back-to-back clean sheets for a defence that has benefitted enormously from the return of Shkodran Mustafi (5.4).

In the seven matches he’s started this season, Arsenal have conceded just a single goal.

That upcoming schedule looks particularly promising for the Gunners’ backline, with even the visit from Man United offering the promise of returns should Jose Mourinho decide to revert to his now familiar negative tactics when facing top-four rivals.

Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil missed Sunday’s victory through illness, with Arsene Wenger confirming post-match that the playmaker “will be short for Wednesday” when the Gunners host Huddersfield.

No luck, but no panic for Burnley

We almost feel partly responsible for Burnley conceding the last minute spot-kick, having talked up Lee Mason’s fondness for penalties in Thursday’s Men In Black.

Despite that cruel last-minute twist, there was again much to admire about the Clarets’ defensive work. They were seconds away from a fourth straight shut-out, ensuring that our faith in their backline remains intact.

Not that faith was entirely the order of the day – a combined 504,000+ managers benched either Stephen Ward or Ben Mee for today’s clash.

The former is the most popular defender in the game, with 22.1% ownership, while his team-mate is in 12.5% of Fantasy Premier League squads, which puts him in the top ten.

Sean Dyche’s rearguard restricted Arsenal to just two shots on target, and only the two Manchester sides have conceded fewer goals than Burnley’s 10 from 13 matches this season.

The Clarets’ immediate schedule (bou lei WAT STO bri) promises more of the same.

Ward and Mee have started every single league match this campaign, while goalkeeper Nick Pope is also an ever-present since taking over from Tom Heaton in Gameweek 4.

All three remain sound investments for a hectic period when nailed-on starters will be at a premium.

Austin powers Saints win

Southampton had failed to find the net in seven matches this season prior to the visit from Everton, scoring just nine goals from 12 generally dreary encounters.

It says much for the Toffees’ meltdown mode that the Saints hit four today, though recalled striker Charlie Austin clearly deserves credit.

In his first start under Mauricio Pellegrino, the injury-prone forward scored twice and fired five shots in the box – no striker had more in Gameweek 13.

He’s owned by just 0.4%, a figure that will most likely rise on the back of Sunday’s instant impact.

But those seeing cut-price differential material in the 6.0-priced Austin might want to pause and reflect on a schedule that includes trips to Man City, Chelsea, Spurs and Man United and a visit from Arsenal over the next eight Gameweeks.

Elsewhere, Steven Davis (5.1) moved up to fourth in the value midfielder charts after scoring his third goal of the season, while Dusan Tadic netted for the first time since Gameweek 2.

Meanwhile, the 8.5%-owned Ryan Bertrand made amends for being part of a defence that’s kept just a single clean sheet in eight matches by providing two assists in a nine-point performance.

The Saints might well kick on from this heartening win, but, given their schedule, it would seem wise to wait until the New Year before we seriously re-consider any revival under Pellegrino.

Ineptitude and now injuries for Everton

Let’s start with the positives.

Positive, actually, because the only reason to be cheerful at Everton is the form of Gylfi Sigurdsson, who now has a goal and an assist from his last two starts.

The midfielder has the fixtures (WHU HUD new SWA) to profit further, and he might now have penalty-taking duties as well, with Leighton Baines suffering an injury in Sunday’s defeat.

But Everton are so poor at present – they’ve conceded nine goals in the last four painful days and the 28 they’ve shipped domestically is the worst record in the Premier League – that taking a punt on any of their assets looks very ill-advised.

That defence can only improve, though it might now be without both Baines and Michael Keane.

The pair limped off at St Mary’s, with David Unsworth offering a gloomy post-match assessment on both.

“Leighton has done his calf, unfortunately. We’ll probably assess him more tomorrow. We’ll reassess him, but it looks like he’s going to be struggling for Wednesday. Michael was a bit different. I don’t know whether it was concussion. He was with the doctor at the end of the game and I haven’t had the chance to speak to either yet.”

After an all-time low of 2 million OR a few weeks ago, and after my worst ever gameweek (22 points in GW8), things are finally coming together. Got 81 points last week with a Kane captain fail (would've been 97 or 99 had I captained Salah or Hazard), and a 400k rise. And now, this week everything came together at last, including captaincy - 72 points and another 400k rise to 260k-ish. I even stopped taking hits every week 😀

Sorry for the brag, but it's nice to finally have something approaching a 'normal' situation in FPL for me. 🙂

I think Fabregas, Ramsey and Zaha are examples of players who are likely to score more over the next three games. If you don't have much money invested in Rich, and you have a spare FT, then you could always shift him for another mid-priced option if you believe they will score more.

For me, selling Rich to RLC allowed me to get Hazard. If I didn't make this move I'd have benched Richarlison for the next 2 games, most likely, since I have 11 other decent players with good fixtures. You can't have them all as they say, and fixtures are a decent enough reason to get rid of someone when there are so many players with good fixtures and form. 🙂

Hey Deulofail i noticed your team is almost identical to mine.

I really want Sane but the only way is too get sell Zaha & Gross to get Sane and Hughes. Not ideal cause of Zaha fixtures and playinf up front, and Gross just keeps getting points. Waht do you reckon?

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

Hey Mustafi Kidding Me. I say keep Gross and Zaha. Hughes has poor fixtures and Sane is far from essential. There's probably a better way to use your transfers 🙂

If you drop Aguero to Morata, you could upgrade Zaha. I like Zaha but his stats aren't much better than RLC tbh (if at all). The best thing he has going for him is simply his fixtures now that Benteke is working his way back into the team.

he doesn't play for a fashionable club , if he played for a top 6 club getting the same returns he's getting at his price he'd have double the ownership he has now imo

      1. Deulofail
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

It's not about fashion though is it. It's mostly about the team's ability to score goals. I expect Chelsea, for example, to score a lot more than Watford in the next 3 weeks, and even more likely over the next 14, say. And I don't like Chelsea. In fact, it's quite fashionable to hate them 🙂

Watford have been quite consistent, but they did have a wobble earlier in the season. There's a degree of consistency to be found every season as a result of chance. You can be more sure that consistency for the 'fashionable' clubs is as a result of quality, which then predicts the continuation of the consistent performances going forward.

        That's my 2 cents 🙂

        1. lugs
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

even with Chelsea's "easy" upcoming fixtures compared to Watford's hard ones , Richarlison will still score more points than a Chelsea Mid at the same price because there isen't one except Fabragas at a slightly higher price now , but he isen't nailed and hasen't matched Richarlisons output this season anyway despite playing for a supposedly "better" team

          1. Deulofail
            • 10 Years
            8 years, 3 months ago

Hazard will outscore a Watford player at the same price because there is isen't one.

If the rule is they have to be the same price as Richarlison, then of course Richarlison would be much higher owned played for a better club (and had similar returns in a similar role). I don't think people are wrong to think he would be a better prospect if he played for a better team. That's just common sense.

But you don't have to own a 6-7m midfielder if you don't want one.

You say Richarlison will score more points with bad fixtures than Fabregas with good fixtures because Fabregas hasn't matched Richarlison's output under different conditions (i.e. not when Rich has bad fixtures and Fab has good fixtures).... I just can't see eye to eye with you on that logic mate, sorry...

Besides it's not about Chelsea either. There are other 'fashionable' clubs. And any of their 6-7m mids who looked as good and nailed as Richarlison would be more welcome in my team than Richarlison because their team will make more chances and score more goals...especially if they have better fixtures.

Any people still with Aguero + Jesus double up? I know we're few and far between but it's actually worked surprisingly well for me.

My plan now is to keep both for this GW (my thoughts are that Jesus starts and Aguero rested), then ditch Jesus and captain Aguero at home to West Ham for GW15 (where he starts and gets a 20 point haul). Then rid of Aguero before Man United away, finally having no City attacker.

Good idea or should I just ditch Aguero now?

Need help to spend my 2 FT and ready to take a hit

    a) Morata or Hazard
Cheaper Morata but I guess he could be easily rotated. If I bought Hazard I would play with single premium striker (Kane) and take a hit -4

    b) Kompany or Otamendi
    Who has better attacking threat?

This might be a bit crazy now as i'm not sure it acheives anything but i am worried about lack of City cover.

    Pope
    Moreno Alonso Ward
    Hazard Salah Gross Zaha
    Morata Kane Wilson

    RLC, Naughton, Mbemba

Was almost set on Zaha & Gross --> Sane & Hughes for -4

But after 90 mins and a yellow card, slightly worried Sane may be rested or banned for one of the upcomming fixtures whilst Zaha is nailed with good fixtures & Gross is nailed with average fixtures.

    Any thoughts?

Ok, I've had enough of the city forwards, have now sold Jesus and Aguero in consecutive weeks, just dumped Aguero and Richarlison for Hazard and Murray. Going all in on a 3-5-2, as I'm so far behind this year. Need your sage advice on what I'm missing (other than Kane!!)

    Pope - Elliot
    Azpi - Mustafi - Daniels - Mee - Mbemba*
    Hazard - Salah - Sane - Silva* - Ramsey*
    Morata - Murray - Niasse

    2.3m ITB, 0 FT

In the next 3 weeks will make the following changes, Ramsey > Coutinho (After the ars vs hud game), Mbema > Femenia, Silva > Pogba/Sterling.

I know it's unorthodox only having 1 prem striker, but I've gone for Hazard over a 2nd striker and the rotation for me now is Niasse vs Murray, whereas previously it was RLC vs the 3rd striker.

I'm hoping that I've loaded up on all the big hitting midfielders with the most propensity for BPS as well as standard points to gain ground on basically everyone.

I've gone for Murray and Niasse as the fixtures dovetail together quite nicely. And when Burnley's fixtures turn in 19 I can swap Mee out for another 4.6m defender

Am I missing any key players for the upcoming fixtures?

When you done with City forwards, Kane can't be trusted and Lukaku poor form / ban
Vardy and Firmino ain't doing it either so there ain't a lot of options.
I might end up having to do this too.
But from bad experience last year these cheap forward never keep returning for long or maybe not at all after you get them.

The only thing I would say is that Murray and Niasse are too lightweight a partnership to rely on in my opinion. I've been going 3-5-2 for the past few weeks but it's been with Kane and Jesus up front (Jesus will soon become Morata), and a midfield of both heavy hitters and more budget players. It could work out for you, but I'd trust mids like Richarlison, Gross, Choupo-Moting/Shaqiri more than forwards like Niasse and Murray.

Unorthodox but absolutely worth it, imo. I've done it with Kane(C) as my only premium forward (got Wilson DCL) and it makes the rest of the team so strong. The only other forward I even want is Morata, the rest are not great value for money.

But purely by sacrificing that second premium forward, what a defence and midfield you can get, heavy hitters all over the place. That's where the value is to me. My midfielders are almost OOP strikers for significantly less $ than the less explosive Lukaku and unreliable Man City options.

My team for GW15 (after my 1 FT) will be:

      Elliot
      Alonso - Azpi - Dann
      Hazard - Salah - Sane - Sterling - Richarlison
      Kane - Wilson

      Krul - DCL - Mariappa - Tuanzebe

0.4 ITB to upgrade bench fodder to Kenny / Dummett type, or downgrade Dann if he's no longer a regular and spread the funds around the rotating defenders.

Hey guys, I need a bit of help with what to do with my team. Unfortunately, I've been on holidays for the last week or so and I've slightly neglected my team, although I don't think it looks too bad. I've still got my WC available but I'm not looking to use it as I don't think my team is too bad other than no Hazard. Also, is Jones supposed to return this GW?

    Elliot (Begovic)
    Azpi, Jones*, Daniels (Maguire, Dunk)
    Salah, Sane, Silva, Richarlison (Carroll)
    Kane, Morata, Murray
    2FT, 0.8mil itb.

Thoughts on what I should do guys? Really want to get Hazard in but not sure how to go about it

I would ditch Jones if you are trying to get in Hazard for some 4.0 non player to start with...Rojo is a natural left center back and will contest that job...

I have the same mids ..not sure if Jones to 4.0 and Murray to 5.0 gets you where you need to be assuming you part with Silva (silva looks good though so its tough)
