Chelsea coach Antonio Conte makes some big decisions that cause Fantasy grief for many in a narrow win over struggling Swansea City.

Second only to the benching of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Leroy Sane’s absence came the news that Conte was resting both Eden Hazard and, most surprisingly of all, Cesar Azpilicueta.

The Belgian’s brilliant recent form – three goals and two assists from his last four starts – had finally persuaded Fantasy Premier League managers back into the fold, with 210,000 new owners heading into Gameweek 14’s visit from Swansea City.

Some 185,000 of his 9.1% ownership handed him the armband as well, a decision that backfired horribly when he produced just a single point from a nine-minute appearance from the bench.

On the bright side, Hazard will now be refreshed for Saturday lunchtime’s home match with a Newcastle side that’s shipped nine goals in their last four road trips.

In the absence of Hazard, striker Alvaro Morata was given the full 90 minutes to shine in attack.

The Spaniard had been signed by 382,495 for the Gameweek and captained by 629,107 (11.7%), including 28 of the top 100 managers.

Like Hazard, he managed just the one point, picking up a booking that means he is now just one caution away from a one-match ban.

With Michy Batshuayi still sidelined, a suspension for Morata will be a concern for Conte, with Hazard as a false nine his only likely solution – yet more good news, potentially at least, for the Belgian’s owners.

Despite Morata’s blank, he was heavily involved on the night. His six shots on goal spoke of a player with form and confidence and, in truth, only Lukasz Fabianski’s brilliance denied him a ninth goal of the season.

As a result, he’s still a major player in the market, with the 47,000+ signings so far making him the fifth most purchased asset ahead of Gameweek 15.

Blues backline prospers without Azpilicueta

Azpilicueta’s rest was the first time in 74 top-flight matches that he’d not played the full 90 minutes for Chelsea.

It was a sensible move by Conte – the Blues weren’t expected to be tested by a notoriously shot-shy Swansea – but a bitter pill to swallow for the 21.9% of managers with FPL’s top scoring defender in their teams.

Sure enough, Paul Clement’s men mustered just two shots on goal – the fewest of the Gameweek – to hand Andreas Christensen a third clean sheet from his fourth straight start.

The Dane could well extend that run in the side with David Luiz currently struggling with a knee issue and, at 5.4, he is the cheapest way, alongside keeper Thibaut Courtois, into a defence that is looking by far the strongest among the big-ticket sides at present.

Chelsea have now kept four of their seven clean sheets for the season over the past five Gameweeks – a timely return to old obdurate ways as their schedule is now superb all the way through to the New Year.

Courtois might be tempting, but he’s provided save points in less than half of his 14 matches to date, whereas Christensen’s potential to pick up bonus points gives him an edge.

And there’s always Marcos Alonso (6.9) for those with the budget to spare, the Spaniard underlining his attacking threat with five shots against Swansea last night.

The market, however, is leaning towards Azpilicueta, who has close to 22,000 new owners already heading into Gameweek 15, with Christensen and Alonso hovering around the 16,000 mark.

Fabianski fulfils autosub role

The surprise benching of Newcastle stopper Rob Elliot meant many a team had Fabianski (7.9%) in as an auto-sub.

And what a move that turned out to be.

The Polish keeper was the stand-out performer for the visitors, making nine saves to bring in three additional points.

That was his highest save tally of the season, beating the eight he made at Wembley Stadium against Spurs in Gameweek 5, and he now has 60 for the season – 15 more than any other keeper.

Things further forward remain bleak, however, with the mercurial Renato Sanches hooked at half-time to spare him further embarrassment and pundit criticism.

But at least another young prodigy, the 11.8%-owned Tammy Abraham, will return for Saturday’s visit to Stoke City, having sat out the midweek match against his parent club.

    Club v FPL Loyalty

Anyone got any examples where either their club loyalty has overridden their FPL loyalty or vice versa

Eg not captained an obvious captain choice because he is against your side?

Or cheered a goal against your side from a player in your FPL side

I think it’s going to come into play for me next week.

Will do Silva to Pogba for the Derby not only because of club loyalty but because I also think Pogba is a great option from GW17 and is nailed.

I normally bench players against Watford or sell. Never captain.

This week I am breaking the trend and captaining Kane. They always thump us and fed up of it.

I show no loyalty at all. I never own a player from my own team and I always captain a player playing against my team whenever I can! Easy when you're a West Brom fan 🙂

I have had a tendency to bench cheap players when they face United. Partly because of club loyalty but mostly because United generally have a decent defence. Though I did play Richarlison this week as United have been poor away and I expected him to toy with Lindelof.

No issue with players from rival teams though.

FPL first and foremost. Anything else and you're not taking FPL seriously. (although it is just a game! :))

Doesnt make any sense to me though, you can own Lukaku for example and be a City fan. When they play each other you might get a 4-3 win with Lukaku scoring a hatty. (Or if your team lose and Lukaku scores, you're happier than you would have been because at least your fpl team did ok!)

It doesnt make any difference if you own players from a rival team to the team you support, it has no bearing on the outcome.

As an Arsenal fan, last season I resisted getting spurs players for a while when I would normally not. However have since then captained Kane against arsenal - that way if he scores I’m happy for my FPL team, but if he/spurs don’t score it’s good for my club support.

As an Arsenal fan I've hedged my bets in the past and sometimes ignored a double or triple up even when form and fixtures are screaming for it, as I couldn't handle the dual misery of FPL and PL bottling when they blanked/lost.

This year that stance had been easy to maintain, up until yesterday; thankfully United this weekend will help stifle any urge to kneejerk and load up.

For me in order to be successful in FPL, your FPL loyalty > Club loyalty. I never had such problems regarding captaining a player playing against my side. You have to be practical about FPL. But this is no excuse to celebrate a goal scored by your FPL player againt your side.

In 10 years I'd never picked a Tottenham player. I'd even gone as far in previous season to not pick van Persie, Nasri or anyone else that 'betrayed' Arsenal. And still won my mini league finishing in the top 30k.

It's definitely cost me better rankings. I've finished 1k playing with 'principals', so it's a case of what could have been. The past two season were abysmal and made me reassess my reasoning.

I'm having a decent season (highest 9k, currently 50k). It's liberating captaining Harry Kane, although I think I've picked the wrong season to finally give up my morals.

Doesn't really bother me. I probably wouldn't captain someone against Spurs, but that's cos we have a good defence, not because of loyalty!

If a player scores against your team and you own him, you can't do anything about it, so you might as well celebrate the points and hope your team get back into the game.

I was at OT as a United fan for this game:

        http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/9221096.stm

I had Berbatov captain who scored 5 goals plus Nani (goal and a few assist) and Vidic.

Vidic got subbed shortly after the hour mark and then United conceded a consolation goal (Samba) after that. Best match ever!

It can be a win/win sometimes. When Otamendi scored his own goal I didn't celebrate, but the FPL gain as a non-owner was a bit comforting.

It would feel uncomfortable to not have a City player or captain someone against City, but that isn't a problem right now. 😎

        Which option?
        A) Jesus, Vardy & Silva > Morata, Niasse & Sterling (-4)
        B) Jesus, Silva & Choupo > Niasse, Sterling & Hazard (-4)
        C) Jesus, Silva & Otamendi > Morata, Sterling & Moreno (-4)

Option A will allow me to go Daniels > Azpi the week after
Option B leaves me with a frontline of Kane, Vardy & Niasse
Option C will allow me to go Daniels > Christensen the week after

        Pope (Elliot)
        Alonso Otamendi Daniels (Ward Simpson)
        Salah Silva Richarlison Choupo-Moting (RLC)
        Kane Jesus Vardy

Feel like there's slightly too much Kane bias on this site

Sanchez scoring 3 in 3 'isn't enough' for his price whilst Kane who's is 1m more expensive only has 2 goals in his last 3 and plenty of frustrating blanks but nobody is talking about getting rid or him not offering good value for money (myself included mainly due to the fear factor of not owning him).

It's because they already own Kane.

If I was to get rid of Kane it would be to spread the funds, not buy Sanchez.

Yeah that's a good point Andy there are plenty of mids that can keep up with Sanchez for cheaper, but I feel like Sanchez could be moved to striker now Lacazette is out for a while. Giroud just seems to be more effective coming off the bench.

Kane is one of the few strikers worth having.

Sanchez is one of about 20 minds firing on all cylinders. And the most expensive one to boot.

I think there's an element of Ramsey doing the goods for far cheaper + Kane is so explosive (which admittedly Sanchez is too), which Eriksen and Alli aren't.

Arsenal scoring goals now, yet fairly low coverage of their players. Getting in a reliable points scorer will become increasingly important.
