Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but it’s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season – and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

Nah, his team are in poor form and he's still a couple of points off top forward spot, sooner or later he'll explode and I'd rather have him in my team but give the armband to someone else for now than have to take the hits needed to get him back when he does explode

    Case for Watford defence?

    - They have 9 good fixtures in next 10

bur cry HUD bha LEI SWA mci SOT lei sto

    - I dont think their defence is that bad as people make it to be. Take away the games against LIV MCI che MU and they have conceded only 8 goals in 10 matches

    - They have been tight against the easy oppositions and at 4.5 Gomes or Kiko could provide good value

Two moves I have pencilled in are Daniels to Femenia/Zeegelar and Niasse to DCL, but worried about price changes pricing me out. Can afford 1 more rise between Femenia and DCL.

    A few questions, should I?
    1) Get Femenia
    2) Get Zegelaar and save a few pennies, which would be saved for things such as Heaton's impending return

    Should I?
    A) Risk the wrath of the market and continue to stagger my moves. 1 per gw
    B) Do Daniels (Palace away) to Femenia (Burnley away)/Zegelaar for a hit and hope to break even. Allowing DCL in for free for the following gw

I think Calvert Lewin is the only one who may rise again this week. I want to do the same moves. I watched Watford game this week and it was the only time I've seen this Zegelaar play but the left wing was getting exposed. The goal came from that side with the full back just tunelling a simple ball up the line leaving Eriksen in space. Zegelaar or Kabasele looked like the first players to get dropped if things go pear shaped in my opinion. I actually thought one of them was going to get dragged but then Sanchez got the red

No worries. To be fair to Zegelaar, in the first 5-10 minutes spurs nearly got in behind Kiko with a couple of long through balls and he recovered. But Kiko is surely nailed is my point and I think hes worth the 0.2 if you have it there to spend

Kabasele is the most nailed defender in the squad. Silva really likes Zeegelaar having brought him to the club from Portugal. Neither are nailed, Janmaat and Holebas will always be there if something goes drastically wrong for one of them. For now, they are both nailed.

Is there anyone else you can downgrade other than Kane to get Hazard? I'd agree Hazard is more necessary than Kane atm but Kun has looked poor and is still a rotation risk you therefore can't confidently captain. Kane is someone we know will explode at some point, he's still doing alright in terms of bringing in the points although he's not been predictable or explosive, therefore I'd consider him a 'keep but don't captain' option for now

No, don't think Sanchez has done enough to justify losing Alonso. Would rather Ramsey than Sanchez due to value. But Sane will come good, if you're worried about the yellow card thing you can just get Sterling, it's going under the radar but he's consistently getting starts, hasn't not started since the West Brom match.

    Why People should KEEP KANE!

1.Fixtures. Kane can definitely explode at home to a leaky Stoke/West Ham, Brighton just shipped 5 and Southampton aren't great either.

2.Performance. Kane is still the 2nd top scorer out of all the forwards, and delivered at least 13 points in 4 of the 14 games he has played. We talk about how bad Spurs are yet he has scored 3 in his last 4.

3.Trend. Kane, Eriksen, Alli AND Tottenham didn't start the last 2 seasons well. Last December was when they gained some form, comfortably beating Swansea, Hull, Southampton and Watford. They have some favourable fixtures in December as well.

4.Penalties. Lukaku, Morata and Jesus are not on penalties. Kane is.

5.Options. Lukaku and United without Pogba aren't great. Jesus/Agüero are always rotated. Morata is excellent though. Vardy is a bit hit and miss and the budget strikers have been awful.

6.Hits. Imagine you take Kane out this week. He can EASILY score a HT v Stoke or Brighton and you take another -4 or -8 to bring him in. He is owned by over 30% so you could be chasing.

7.A lot of people want to take Kane out to upgrade midfield. I personally have Salah, Hazard, Sterling and Richarlison with Kane and Morata. What other midfielders would you want? I back Kane to outscore Mahrez/Ramsey/most City or LFC midfielders.

8.Just have faith. Remember Kane has a full week to prepare for Stoke, and at one point Eriksen and Alli will gain form.

I have faith but if he does nothing against Stoke and Brighton, I don't see why I'd want him for City Bur and even the Southampton game after that. Depending how West Ham get on against Chelsea, that derby mightnt be a great fixture either.

Hes here for the next 2 but I hope to have 2 transfers and then I'll consider going without until he gets back to his best

Ok so Ronaldo has only scored 2 goals in 10 La liga appearances this season. Messi didn't score for 5 games in a row until his game at the weekend. I GUARANTEE you wouldn't be dropping any of them two thoughtout the season? Kane is the double golden boot for a reason!

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years

He's not gonna set the world on fire at City or Burnley if they don't get their act together in the next 2 games and if no one is captaining him will be minimal. I get your point but there's 2 sides to every discussion and the other side has to be considered also.

          On your points

          1. Yes he can explode. But you didn't mention the City Burnley game so it's plausible to chance going without for these. Take a punt on a midfielder, save a transfer and get him back in if you thinks it's the time

          2. He's doing fine, it's his team that's playing poorly. It's been shown that the value is in midfield this season based on what we have to work with

          3. True, but champions league has taken a toll on them and they're current form is worrying.

          4. He hasn't had one all season. It's a plus, but no one fills their team with 10 penalty takers

          5. Get a budget striker and get and replace RLC with a premium mid

          6. Keep money itb and drop Morata if you think you're in big trouble, or reverse the 2 transfers you made. Max -4, good planning, 2 fts

          7. I have Salah, Haz, Rich, Sané. Could easily put KdB, Sterling, Mane, Coutinho, Siggy in for a few weeks

          8. I have faith and I'll have him for Stoke and Brighton but if he blanks in them, I'll be taking my chances elsewhere with 2fts and see how it goes for 3/4 weeks without him

These are just reasons why it is plausible to consider going without. I'm on the fence about it but I'm considering alternatives and everyone should be. I'll be more than happy if he does explode in the next 2 games but if he doesn't, then somethings gotta give. Kane, or you OR rank

Agreed but my major issue is, he may do well and still not be worth that price IF I can't confidently captain him. That said, he hasn't left my team even once and likely won't go for the foreseeable future.

i think you need chelsea defender as well. they will keep a lot of cleanies overr than rrun and alonso offers great attacking potential

silva is a rotation risk too with gundogan.
