Charlie Austin delivers for Southampton once again, ensuring a hard-fought draw on the south coast as Fantasy managers prepare to abandon their short-term investment in Bournemouth.

The Saints striker returned to the starting XI today after being omitted for the midweek run-around at Manchester City.

Austin responded by scoring another vital goal, the equaliser from a Nathan Redmond assist, to make it three from his last two starts.

Based on data from the last three Gameweeks, only Alvaro Morata and Alexandre Lacazette can better Austin’s eight shots in the box – and that despite being limited to a brief cameo in midweek.

That statistic, along with his three goals, highlights his potential as a budget option available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League.

He will take his opportunities when given pitch-time, but a lack of mobility has previously held the striker back, with manager Mauricio Pellegrino largely turning to Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long to lead his attack.

Pellegrino may now find it difficult to overlook Austin, although a congested festive schedule, coupled with the 28-year-old’s propensity to pick up injuries, will ensure that his minutes and starts are managed further.

Southampton’s fixtures also stacks the odds against him as a Fantasy asset.

He’ll face Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs and Manchester United over the next six Gameweeks; hardly match-ups that encourage renewed interest in the Saints after we were burned by Pellegrino’s side over their incredibly favourable opening to the campaign.

The defence remains the popular area of the squad, with Ryan Bertrand (8.4%) and Fraser Forster (8%) the most owned players.

However, the backline have now have kept just one clean sheet in the last ten Gameweeks and there’s little to suggest that they can improve on that over a punishing run of opponents.

Cherries reach their sell-by date

Ryan Fraser scored in his first start since Gameweek 5, but it’s his fellow midfielder Andrew Surman who continues to offer solid value.

Surman’s assist today took him to three for the season, all of which have arrived in the last six Gameweeks.

He’s also scored twice and his seven-point showing against the Saints, which included two bonus, took him to a club-leading 57 points for the season – and all for just 4.8.

Things were rather less rosy for the 5.4% of managers with Callum Wilson (6.1) as their third striker, however.

Having boosted his ownership by 342,000+ since a Gameweek 12 hat-trick against Huddersfield, Wilson was denied a fifth successive start today and failed to produce from a 21-minute appearance from the bench.

He lost over 6,000 owners heading into Gameweek 15 and has already shed another 10,000 coming out of it. That will surely only increase ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

Elsewhere, the Cherries’ most popular FPL asset, Charlie Daniels (13.3%), also delivered little as Eddie Howe’s men were denied a clean sheet for the second successive home match, having secured three straight shut-outs in the three previous fixtures.

Next Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace marks the end of a strong run of fixtures since Gameweek 11.

Adam Smith – recalled for Steve Cook on Sunday – will miss that Eagles clash having picked up his fifth booking today – he was controversially booked for simulation in the penalty area by referee Jonathan Moss, who reportedly later admitted the error.

Following the Selhurst Park encounter, Howe’s men will face a visit from Liverpool sandwiched between trips to both Manchester clubs.

The fixtures do soften considerably from Gameweek 20, and that might just be enough to offer Daniels, if not Wilson, a stay of execution.

    Bench one of this bunch:

    1 Daniels -CPal (A)
    2 Mustafi - Saints (A)
    3 Walker - MUnited(A)
    4 Mee - Watford (H)
    5 Richarlison - Burnley(A)

Think Mustafi will be out injurd so decision might be made for you.

If not I'd go Mee as you'll be playing Richarlison

i'd play Daniels. It's the last game your likely to want him for and they have a good chance of clean sheet and/ or possible attacking points

Next 3 Leicester fixtures are okay, could do daniels to simpson.

Could also take a punt and do Wilson to Rooney.

Not sure I'd do any this week though, daniels has every chance of cs against palace and wilson may well start.

I've just had my worst week of the season and dropped about 100k rank overall so if anyone could give any feedback or suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Keep Alonso. When you own Alonso have to just leave him and forget you have him and then there will come a week when he gets 15+ points.

I learnt this last year... held Alonso for ages then thought nah I will get rid and he goes and gets a brace and clean sheet. Seeya 21 points

Has Kane lost our trust in him with the armband temporarily? If so are a lot of us in a position where we feel we can't captain him until he starts showing something over the next two or three and if he doesn't is it time to get rid?

This is the trouble a lot are selling and it's as if as soon as people doubt him he comes up with a big score.. but 9 blanks in 15 for 12.8 and someone who was meant to be a reliable captain is no longer acceptable

Just wondered how people were feeling about him? If we can't trust him with the armband and he shows nothing in next 2/3 is it time to say seeya Harry Kane and use the money elsewhere?

    1. FPLMatt
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 3 months ago

Eden Hazard/Mo Salah look like far more reliable captain options at this point in time. I am aware things change very quickly and that it's not Harry Kane himself but Spurs are not creating the chances they did for him last year.

This is the thing. At the top of my mini league sits someone who has not had Kane in all year so is unsurprisingly doing rather well... all this does is make me want to keep hold of him as Kane is a big differential over the leader but it looks like there's just something wrong with Spurs at the moment. Teams sit off them and they lack the pace to cut through park the bus teams.

As a result Kane has to take a lot of shots as soon as he gets the ball from outside the box. While his stats themselves look fantastic would be interesting to see some sort of analysis into the amount of shots he has outside the box and how many are clear cut chances

    3. Pep says

For me, if Spurs' form doesn't how signs of improvement in the next 2 games, I'm ditching him for anyone and upgrading RLC to Cout/Mane/DeBryune/Sanchez. He's got City and Burnley so can't see many captaining him and can't see him doing much. Ill monitor him ahead of the West Ham game and will either reverse the 5th mid move or just upgrade Morata to Kane.

I think its worth a gamble to go without if form doesn't improve and he won't hurt anyone because everyone is losing faith in captaining him

Thanks guys really interesting to hear what you are all thinking. My thoughts were similar in that I feel an LFC double up may prove rather fruitful and have Mane and Salah. He (and Spurs) are going to have to really impress over the next few for me to keep him in. I've had enough of seeing 2 or 4 points from my captain he's blanked 8 times for me when I've captained him

Salah and Hazard as the main two captaincy options and rotate them to me looks best bet at the moment

I agree. It's not so much Kane needs to hit form it's Alli and Eriksen need to sort themselves out. Teams are doubling up on them and they have no space. Lamela I think would be a fantastic way of shaking up the Spurs team and sorting out this mess

Not sure thats worth a transfer though. Better to play 4.5 def than a 4.5 mid?

I'm a complete donut. Left money to upgrade to Hazard but filled my three Chelsea spots and now can't manage to get him in. 🙁

could go Azpi and Silva to Hazard and a 4.2 defender but that doesn't really get me anywhere

I have both Morata/Hazard but Hazard over Morata anyday. If you seen the game on Saturday you wouldn't even think about it. The guy is unreal and could have scored about 6. Everything comes through him when he plays just behind the Striker. Unplayable at times.

Maybe someone like Firmino to replace Morata? got a decent run of games.

Is there any chance Pogba could drop a few notches before he returns? He had a massive influx of owners while he was price protected, so has a lot of owners to shed...

He would be such a steal if he was to drop to 7.7 or 7.6 by the time he returns

I had him when he was price protected.

I'll definitely be bringing him back in after his suspension.

I think a lot of owners are ghost teams
