We delve into the Opta data now with our usual post-Gameweek members’ article, focusing on a case of standout performers across the previous round of fixtures.

Arsenal’s attack comes under scrutiny ahead of favourable festive fixtures, while Chelsea’s midfield man of the moment puts in another outstanding shift.

We also check out Man City’s super-sub, the Potters’ playmaker and the impact of Claude Puel on Jamie Vardy’s goal potential.

How has RLC looked the last couple of weeks? Wondering whether him or Kiko have more potential this gw

      1) What's the best approach for dealing with the double gameweek? Will you be using any of your chips?

      2) Given Harry Kane and Spurs's struggles this season, why did most of the scoutcast team captain Kane?

      3) Is it now safe to go without any Man City coverage?

      4) What's the best way to take advantage of Arsenal's incredible attacking stats over the last 4 Gameweeks?

      5) For people looking to squeeze in Hazard, who is the cheapest playing defender?

@Virgin been out... They're 11 for clean sheets this season. That's better than Newcastle, Palace, Southampton, WBA, Leicester and Bournemouth who've all had their turns at great fixtures. Now it's Watford's turn and they're already leading the pack so saying 'pretty much everyone' is not a valid point

Conceded alot of those goals against top 6. They're doing pretty well outside of that which is what our aI'm as managers to identify.

There's more to the league than xstats

They are rock bottom for xG Conceded at home and in all matches ... so I hope you're right! Silva was defensively very organised at Hull but he seems to be letting the horses run free at Watford. As things stand, I'm avoiding a Watford defender unless it is Mariappa as a 5th defender to free up funds.

                  1. Pep says
                    • 10 Years
                    8 years, 3 months ago

He was organized because it was Hulls only chance.

They conceded 17 goals in 4 games (Liv, Mci, Che, ManU)

Only conceded 8 goals in the other 11 games. That included 6 clean sheets and a single goal conceded at home to Spurs and Arsenal.

So there hasn't really been a 'lack of cleanies'

15 games. 6 against the top 6. Other 9,they've kept 6 clean sheets. That's not a bad stat in my opinion. Not sure what you expect from cheap defenders

big difference is he took over at Hull mid-season so 1st priority was defence.
had a whole summer sorting out Watford to play how he wants them to.
interesting his win record etc. is about the same at Watford as it was at Hull.

This has been asked several times over the last weeks, anyways, if you own Sane, is it worth swapping for Sterling after the Manchester derby? Sterling is cheaper, has more attacking points, and Sane is 1 YC away from suspension..

Are we thinking the wrong way about the value of being nailed during this congested fixture period?

We generally pay a heavy premium for nailed players but with even the likes of iron man Azpilicueta being rested is any body truly nailed anymore. Surely this means that previously rotated players actually play more often not less and therefore represent better value.

Should we therefore make sure we have a strong bench and pack our teams with high ppm players and just accept rotation as inevitable?

Is it time to bring in Alexis Sánchez?

He has Southampton (A), West Ham (A) and Newcastle (H) in his next three, which are all captainable fixtures.

He's also scored 4 times in his last 7 games, so he is gaining some form and Arsenal are playing some decent football now.

A couple of cheap gk options have dried up. Is it worth spending more to have two decent keepers, or is that money better spent on one of the many decent mids on offer?

First dgw announced. What will the scouts be doing with their chips this year? Has anyone decided how to best use the free hit chip yet?

Cheers looking forward to this weeks edition!

FWIW I think if DDG can score 8 points whilst conceding and not even saving a penalty, he's now untouchable in goal.

Some of us have ditched Kane and are going 4-5-1 with Morata.

Who are the two best ≈ 5.0m forwards to go with him? Is it worth having both Niasse and DCL, thus guaranteeing a starting cheapie most weeks? Or DCL/Crouch? A.N. Other?

Without Kane, I can afford Hazard, Coutinho, Salah, Silva and Richarlison/Ramsey, plus DDG and Alonso at the back. Kane's a reverse magic bean. I think that makes him the family cow?

      1) Is Charlie Austin beginning to look like the cheap forward we have been looking for? Is he worth considering after Soton's terrible fixtures ease a bit?

      2) Has fatigue caught up with City? The inevitable regression in goals scored and in overall performances makes the midfield double up not so rewarding now. Is it time to move to Liverpool midfield double up instead?

Question 2 is an interesting one. My counter would be - if it's catching up with City then surely it's catching up with everyone else at least as quickly? City's strength in depth is terrifying and they are surely the team that can best rotate to stay out of trouble.

You can have 4 premium mids with 2 heavy hitters up front (or even 3 without Kane)

Will the team bottle out of selling Kane if he hauls this weekend and proclaim that they always knew he was essential?

What's interesting is, I'm no statistician (that's not the interesting bit) but I bet at 12.8m Kane could still, perhaps, score 1-2 goals every single game and never become essential, due to what the extra capital can do for the rest of the team. A definition of "essential" would be essential at this point. Does "essential" mean that you couldn't win FPL without a given player? top 1k, 10k, etc? What would the points per price need to be for a player to be essential?

        1. Pep says
          • 10 Years

2 goals a game is essential but unrealistic. Imagine getting 26pts from a captain every week. No combination of Kane's money would outscore that unless you can predict the future

            Maybe I got over-exuberant 🙂

I *think* my point stands, but scaled down a little. One goal a game but in fits and starts? 38 in a season form? 1.5 bonus per game? Costa did this for ages last season but he was never essential.

Only one player has scored more goals than Harry Kane this year, should we be thinking about selling him too if he lets us down with the captaincy?

If the team had captained every one of Kanes 10 goals, would there be a discussion to be had on if he should be sold or not?

Is it a case of him not performing or fantasy managers making poor captaincy decisions?

I suppose the only concern is that there appears to be no discernible logic to his scoring patterns. He could be relied upon to score highly away, but this is starting to dry up. He didn't score against weak teams at home, and this is starting to change slowly too. I don't think there are such things as good or bad captaincy decisions with Kane, just lucky and unlucky. For now.

      @ Jonty

      i) How to approach the first DGW of the season, should we use a free hit chip or better off save for the reduced GW?

ii) Is it risky to use TC chip on Harry Kane?

iii) Should we load up on 3 Spurs and 3 WHU ? If yes, then which players we should bring in for the DGW?

      Thank you.

I wouldn't load up for one GW. You are then stuck with six players you might not want for future (and past!) GWs. One really good captain plus one or two others should be enough for a given DGW.

Predicting HUD-MCI, MCI-SOU, MCI-WHU and CHE-NEW, we could easily say the big teams would get clean sheets. But they conceded in all 4.
My point is that I feel players like Azpi, Alonso, Walker are overpriced if results like these keep coming in easy matches.
I think that, in MCI's and CHE's cases, Otamendi and Christensen can save us more than 2m of our budget, to use to upgrade our mids and fwds.

      1. _Make
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

Good point, but perhaps the data is actually making the opposite argument for the one you intended:

If the big teams are not keeping clean sheets reliably, does the data not suggest that you should be spending a little more to get the attacking potential of, say, Alonso over Christensen?

I accept that Otamendi is actually looking like the most reliable attacking defender from a City perspective. Walker has been disappointingly (or perhaps predictably :p) weak on attacking returns.

        1. Duffy Dunk
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 3 months ago

If they were returning attacking points a little more consistently they would justify their high price.
But as it stands, let's say for Alonso, the potential is there, he gets in good positions but it just doesn't happen.
Since Walker, Alonso, Azpi don't offer more than Otamendi and Christensen, I think money in the bank along with defensive cover from these teams is the way to go.

Well, that's true. Alonso in particular seems to be the nearly man of attacking returns. Every time I listen to a match he is on the verge of scoring or assisting and he doesn't seem to do it quite regularly enough.

That said, it is exciting owning him, and you know that he's got the potential to score two in a given fixture. And he's nailed. He's worth it for these reasons alone, I think. Half an hour at the end of training practicing his shooting and he'd be a steal even at 6.9m.

Related to Page 302 Emre Canada's excellent question above: it strikes me that this is the time of the season when the honeymoon period starts to wear off in earnest for the promoted clubs. Huddersfield and Newcastle are on very poor runs and Brighton just got an unexpected hiding at home. Does anyone have any data on when these clubs tend to start losing confidence and how can we mercilessly exploit them?

I think that the game against Wham for all of us the owners of Kun or Jesus was the one we understood that it's not worth to own a Mancity forward.Do you agree or you think that they are still important?
Since we have so many good mid options like Hazard, Coutinho, Richarlison, Ramsey and others and ManCity has two tough fixtures(Manutd,Tot) in the next three you think it would be a risk not to have ManCity players for these three fixtures?

Jonty, I am looking to play my free hit chip in gw22 but want to sell Kane before gw21. Could i use free transfer to get Kane back in after gw21 but then use free hit chip. I will have him in for free hit but worried if I sell him he could go up massively in price between gw21-22 and it will cost me a lot more to get him back in the team after gw22.

      1. Pep says
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 3 months ago

He won't go up massively because the 'transfers in' required for him to go up by 0.1m will be doubled during the period of time between the Gw21 deadline and GW22 deadline.

So he would need a hell of alot of transfers to rise more than 0.1m

If you get Kane after the blank GW and use your FH chip, Kane will not be in your gw23 squad unless you transfer him in after the GW22 deadline

Thanks Pep. I thought that would be the case, but just thought I would ask. In some ways I want him to have a few quiet weeks as I bought him for £ 12.6m and he is currently £ 12.8M. But I guess I will make plans and then have a closer look nearer the time as a lot of things can change.

      Hello there, Jonty.

You are watching - and reading - another Scoutcast question.

I'm looking for a Wilson replacement. Charlie Austin might not be 100% nailed, but he has been playing recently, and he has been scoring. Also, he has been passing the eye test.

      Thoughts?

      4-5-1?

With Kane and Lukaku short on goals, rotation concerns over Firmino, Aguero and Jesus, Lacazette still finding his feet (although increasingly becoming an option), no reliable 6-7m striker (potentially Austin) and Hazard, Salah and Sterling performing like strikers in midfield, has 4-5-1 become a viable option?

What do you think of the example team below?

      GK: Pope

      Def: Alonso, Sakho, Mee, Zeegelaar

Mid: Salah, Hazard, Sane, Sterling, Richarlison

      Fwd: Morata

      Subs: Pickford, Austin, Calvert-Lewin

Best time to play a cheap gk is when they are up against a good strike force - lots of save points.

Maybe for the first time in years we have genuine reliable captaincy material in midfield in Salah,Hazard,Sterling etc. Could we be returning to the days of Lampard,Malouda,Ronaldo,Gerrard and co.? 3-5-2 could be the way forward.

    Pope (Elliot)

    Vert, Mustafi, Moreno (naughton, Long)

    Alli, Sterling, Salah, Richarlison, Gross

    Kane, Morata (DCL)

    Thinking of doing either:

    B. Alli and Mustafi to Hazard and

    C. Alli and Moreno to Coutinho and Otamendi
