A high-octane but low quality Merseyside derby ends even, with goals coming from Fantasy Premier League’s most popular player and a considerably more overlooked Everton asset.

Mohamed Salah continued his breathtaking run of form with the opener for Liverpool on Sunday – the eighth successive Gameweek in which he’s either scored or assisted.

Only Spurs’ Harry Kane was captained by more managers than the 15.8% who handed the Egyptian the Gameweek 16 armband, and he duly obliged with his 13th goal of the season.

Salah was handed a central role behind Dominic Solanke as Jurgen Klopp continued with the 4-4-1-1 formation that served the Reds so well in the midweek Champions League destruction of Spartak Moscow.

And it’s fair to say he flourished – he was joint-top for shots (seven) and key passes (six) in the Gameweek despite his 67th minute withdrawal.

That bodes well for a Salah start at home to West Brom on Wednesday night, particularly as Liverpool’s Gameweek 18 fixture isn’t until the Sunday.

Rotation ruffles Fantasy feathers

If Salah is almost immune to rotation, the same cannot be said for some of his big-ticket team-mates.

Klopp is clearly in tinkering mode this term – he’s made 59 changes to his starting line-up this year after making only 54 across the entirety of last season.

Liverpool’s flexibility of personnel is mirrored in their various formations. Having also played 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-2-2, plus the old default 4-3-3, this season, they are becoming far more adaptable and, alas for us, their teamsheet a lot less predictable.

That was reflected by Klopp’s decision to rest in-form pair Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.

Coutinho (293,000+) was the most bought player for Gameweek 16, with Firmino (220,000+) also in the top four.

Both were introduced in the second half as Liverpool strove for a winner and they will surely start in midweek, but the threat of future rotation is likely to slow further acquisitions for now.

Liverpool’s defence, meanwhile, has temporarily lost its allure at Anfield.

Wayne Rooney’s penalty today meant no Anfield clean sheet for a second successive match, although much of that was down to Dejan Lovren’s clumsiness.

But December does offer the distinct prospect of a return to more parsimonious ways at home, with West Brom, Swansea City and Leicester City still to visit before the year is out.

Calvert-Lewin prospers

Sam Allardyce looked to contain Liverpool for the most part, although he did opt for both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Oumar Niasse up front in a classic 4-4-2.

And it was the former who proved his worth, both for his club and Fantasy managers.

More than 157,000+ bought Calvert-Lewin for Gameweek 16 and his stock as a budget buy continues to rise with his assist for Rooney’s penalty.

He is now the top value forward in FPL and the second most popular buy going into Gameweek 17, while Niasse was subbed off at half-time and slips back down the pecking order as a result.

As it stands, Calvert-Lewin’s ownership is set to soar once again – he is second only to Kane for acquisitions ahead of Tuesday’s Gameweek 17 deadline, with a price rise to 5.3 appearing imminent.

Elsewhere, Rooney scored his eighth goal of the campaign – and fourth in three Gameweeks – despite being used in a variety of roles as the derby unfolded.

He started on the right wing before settling into a more familiar central role as Allardyce switched to 4-2-3-1.

Penalty duties, his form – he also produced an assist in Gameweek 15’s win over Huddersfield – and the fact he’s now above both Firmino and Alexandre Lacazette in the current forward standings are all boosting his case for consideration.

Managers are certainly returning to the fold – Rooney has put on close to 160,000 new owners in the past two weeks and is now owned by 11.2%.

And Everton’s schedule (new SWA CHE wba bou) is unlikely to stem that positive tide.

The Toffees’ fixtures could also pique our interest in a defence that’s conceded just one goal in the last three Gameweeks and restricted a previously rampant Liverpool to just a single effort.

They are only the third team – along with Spurs and Chelsea – to limit Liverpool to fewer than three goals in their last 12 matches in all competitions.

My squad (2.4 itb, usually 352):

    Pope/Speroni
    Azpi/Mustafi/Gomez/Tarkowski/Francis
    Hazard/Salah/Sterling/Richarlison/Groß
    Morata/Firmino/Niasse

Had had Kane since gw1, and vowed to keep him all year. Got convinced he wasn't worth the price and used my two fts last week to get in Firmino/Hazard(c) for him and Sane. 30 points last week and 35 this (benched both Burnley lads on account of Watford away form...) dropped me half a million places - crisis!

Planned to use the extra cash to get in De Gea for Pope and then slowly upgrade defence but doubting cutting Kane now. Can afford a straight swap for Morata (probably should've sold him in the first place) with 0.1 over. Alternatively move on Francis for someone same price or less (Ogbonna? Kenny?), and see how the next week goes? Or stick to the original plan...

So, admit I made a mistake and beg Kane to return, mull it over a week or two longer, or hold my head high and march on, never looking back? Or any other advice!?

Well, I was talking about the relationship with Kane tbh, lol. Not totally legit married irl, but nearly a decade together and she's moved with me back to my home country on partner visa so as good as!

Yeah, I can afford it. Sticks in my craw to bring him back so quick but you're right, Morata looking out of form and the regret will be sharp if Kane steamrolls Brighton Wednesday.

What exactly is Big Sam’s job? Not like Everton are in danger of going down so it ain’t a Big Sam emergency save em special. Is he tasked with a top 6 finish? Just wondering what is job done for Big Sam and whether he has actually found a job he wants to stick with for more than a few months. That cloak and dagger shit he was doing to mess with Klopp was classic!

hes a place holder and a good one.
get him in to keep everton up (it cant be prsumed theyre too big to go down, they were pretty bad) while the owners find someone longer term.

Think he is going to finally get undone sometime next year. He's always had the free pass of poor performances because of a lack of resources, because his team is always expected to get relegated etc. but that excuse will be gone sometime next year. If Koeman (who is a good technical manager) can find a way to get sacked, I just don't see what BFS can possibly do besides getting Everton in the top half of the table.

Also, don't see any striker like Giroud signing for Everton now. Basically feel, Everton have turned themselves into a Bolton/Burnley type side by appointing BFS.

        agreed
they have limited ambitions, probably freaked at the plan of a new ground and fearing relegation.
have an excellent academy to take over from the ageing team and BFS is a safe and unspectacular pair of hands
They aint going anywhere near the europa any time soon!

Probably A as uncertainty around the keepers. I think Elliot will get his place back at some stage but I liked the way Everton defended against Liverpool. DCL and Pickford are probably the safest 2 Everton players to pick.

Hi all, a little help here would be much appreciated:

    DDG Elliot

    Mee Azpi Ota Naughton Rosenior

    Ramsey Salah Richarlison Gross Sterling

    Kane Morata Niasse

    2 FT:

    Initial idea was to do:

    A) Morata + Gross => Hazard + Quaner

But with Ramsey potentially out with a hammy, is it better to do:

    B) Morata + Ramsey => Hazard +Austin

For option B, I can also opt for Quaner and upgrade Rosenior in the coming weeks.

    Thoughts?

    1. Boglander

Not his fault, their entire attack has been found out. Teams now sitting way deep. Sané brings pace but against buses, he doesn’t really get the same level of chances he had been getting. He’s also really young and not experienced enough to figure out other moves. I’d get rid of him ASAP

I think Pep is now at a point where the matches against the lesser teams are arguably more important than the matches against big teams given their lead. Can imagine him trying to ensure that they just don't drop any points in the winnable games.

I did Sane to Silva, saved the extra cash, made a whole load of sense to em this morning when I hit the button.

Still wanted a City mid is why I went this way,.

He is so instrumental to the way they play, essential to City, I'll probably season keep now and get somewhat stable pointage.

I did have Silva early on, actually, and benefited quite well. But then Sane blew up and I moved to him. Seems about time to revert, and save some funds.

          As did I.

However when I got Sane in, he was rested twice and only played 90 mins once, getting an after the final whistle yellow to rub salt in! Hasn't returned since I brought him in, I missed his hauls. Then he dropped .2, so transfer fail!

Silva is consistent and undoubtedly one of the first names on the team sheet with Fernandinho I would think. I am happy from now to get his consistent flow of stable pointage over the next few months I think.

Could go wild and take a hit: Sane, Gross, Morata > Haz, Silva, Austin (or Rooney?)

Ha you won’t want to hear this but yes I think Morata is worth shipping for Lacazette.

I'm fine with hearing that, actually. This is my second stint with Morata. Hasn't paid off either time.

Do you intend on using Cork/Carroll as your 4th mid in the long run?

If your answer is yes, then upgrade Hune to a 5.4 defender.

If no, I'd roll the FT over and possibly downgrade kola/otamendi to one of Kenny/ Kabasele/ Masauaku/ Gomez and upgrade Cork/Carroll to Richarlison.

I don't understand how you just waste a transfer when you have Carroll Joselu Honeymonster and Elliot in your side. Maybe he doesn't want to spend even an additional 0.1m on that bench.

Actually, with 0.0m in the bank, his options were limited. Joselu to DCL/Niasse, Elliot to Speroni and Carroll to Romeu were probably his only moves.

    G2G? Wildcard played.

    DDG
    Otamendi - Smalling - Kabasele
    Richarlisson - Salah - Sterling - Alli
    DCL - Lukaku (C) - Morata

Brave to have/keep Lukaku on a wildcard after his recent form.

Needs some Kane and Hazard for me.

Fair enough. I would still go Hazard over Morata though.

I own both and am considering a Morata transfer out depending on how he does midweek/next weekend.

I like how you are willing to take some risks. Alli has been borderline benchable and Lukaku sounds like he might be suspended. He definitely can’t handle the pressure. But it could be a moon shot with both in a WC.

I considered this before I did Sane > Silva.

I have Salah and couldn't justify to myself that leaving a City attacking player out was a good idea.

Yes. Sané is a good player but the league has figured him out. He needs to adapt. Usually takes some time. Cout on the other hand is playing his heart out to leave Liverpool

A)DLC-rotational charm of 5.2 in a defensive everton set up.
B)Mounie 5.7-now fallen back in love with his manager, very few games but scores in bunches (+3 baps this week)
    C) (fatty)austin 6.1,sick note holder but qualitee

I think it depends on the balance of your team. Where would you invest the difference of 0.9m between DLC and Austin?

    3. Pinky Blinders
      • 9 Years

DLC because he’s going to end up as the one guy that can escape the bargain bin label. He’s not Kane, so his climb will be longer and lower trajectory but he should be a solid player for a long time. He’s just getting started.
