It only seems like yesterday that Gameweek 16 was still ongoing, mainly because it was indeed only yesterday.

But time and Fantasy Premier League Gameweeks wait for no manager, so the midweek musings of our ‘expert’ panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars and Career Hall of Fame luminary Peter Kouwenberg are now spread out for you to snack on below.

The quick turnaround has tempted our Scouts to go big on premium midfielders and forwards – and particularly those who played little or no part in Sunday’s Merseyside and Manchester derbies.

Money must be saved somewhere, however, so there’s also a number of budget-balancing boys from Crystal Palace, Burnley and Everton in among the wallet-busters.

We’ll be back tomorrow to reveal those that make the cut for Gameweek 17’s Scout Picks.

Paul Says…

Navigating the fixtures at this time of the season always comes with an added degree of risk as managers ramp up their rotation.

Along with a host of the usual squad candidates, I’ve gone for Spurs’ Danny Rose for the visit of Brighton. With a weekend trip to Man City on the cards, I reckon that Mauricio Pochettino will freshen up his midweek full-backs against the Seagulls and Rose has the attacking edge over Serge Aurier on the opposite flank.

His team-mate Son Heung-min keeps his place in my picks after delivering 16 points against Stoke on Saturday – he seems likely to keep a spot on the teamsheet for the Brighton clash and then perhaps drop to the bench at the Etihad Stadium.

Having started all four league fixtures that Alberto Moreno has missed, Andrew Robertson looks set to continue in Liverpool’s first XI for the visit of West Brom. The Reds have conceded just three times at Anfield and face a Baggies side that’s yet to score under Alan Pardew. Going forward, Robertson has averaged a shot and key pass every 72 minutes this season.

I’d also advocate a double-up on the Liverpool midfield as they look to bounce back from that draw with Everton – the form of Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho makes both very viable options.

Up top, Sergio Aguero and Roberto Firmino earn recalls after failing to make their respective sides’ starting XIs at the weekend. The former netted twice away to Swansea last season and has played just 20 minutes of Man City’s last two in all competitions.

Dwight Gayle also comes in alongside Charlie Austin as a budget option.

While the latter’s four goals in three starts has earned him over 57,000 new owners, the Magpies’ frontman has also shown strong form of later, with three strikes and an assist in four – including goals away to both Man United and Chelsea.

Peter Says…

Dividing my eggs mainly between the Chelsea and Arsenal baskets last weekend proved somewhat unsuccessful.

And it would appear that I cursed Mamadou Sakho and Marvin Zeegelaar by backing the former in the Scout Picks and transferring the latter into my own team (returning goal-scorer Scott Dann inevitably the one who made way, to make a mockery of both those selections).

Can you all hear those tiny violins?

This week, five of the top six in the Premier League have enticing fixtures (Arsenal’s trip to the London Stadium possibly the exception given the Hammers’ recent good start under David Moyes), so if we can second guess the usual rotational risks it could be a profitable week.

Harry Kane seems to have recovered his mojo as he yo-yos between “must have” and “overpriced comfort blanket” for FPL managers.

He is joined in attack by the well-rested duo of Firmino and Aguero. Salah could conceivably get the night off against the Baggies, but I’ll get lynched if I leave him out. Unless we get credible team news before the deadline, I admit to hedging my bets by bringing in Coutinho too in a risky Liverpool treble.

I don’t think Chelsea can afford to leave Eden Hazard out as they also seek to bounce back away at Huddersfield.

It would also be no great shock to see the ‘big guns’ shutting their less illustrious opposition out, so a David de Gea and Chris Smalling double-up against the Cherries, together with the irritatingly prolific Nicolas Otamendi and rotation risk Ben Davies, ensures that I’ve very little left in the piggy-bank for Christmas.

I feel defensive value can be found at Burnley and Crystal Palace, so I’ll lick my wounds and restore Dann to the mix, together with Julian Speroni, Nick Pope and Stephen Ward.

That leaves four more attacking places to be filled by some of our more inexpensive options, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Demarai Gray, Wilfried Zaha and Dwight Gayle complete my picks.

Jonty Says…

Rotation fears are set to dominate our second Scout Picks selection in a week.

But luckily, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gave us some hints via their weekend teamsheets regarding likely starters.

The benching of Coutinho for the Merseyside derby makes a start very probable for the Brazilian when West Brom pay visit. With two goals and four assists in his last three league starts, plus a Champions League hat-trick against Spartak Moscow last week, he is not only a shoo-in for selection, but also a key captaincy shout for Gameweek 17.

Aguero’s omission from the Manchester derby surely means he will make the City starting XI against Swansea.

Harry Kane against a Brighton side that has shipped 10 since their last win, way back in Gameweek 11, is another must for me. And so are Chelsea’s Hazard, away to Huddersfield, and Otamendi, who has scored in his last two league run-outs.

I’m also expecting little argument for my pick of Watford winger Richarlison ahead of his trip to Crystal Palace, given only Harry Kane has had more shots on the road than the Brazilian.

Elsewhere, I’ve nominated a selection of budget picks that I hope will deliver strong returns. Calvert-Lewin is the best example of this, with his assist for Wayne Rooney’s penalty against Liverpool making him the best value forward in FPL.

I’ve also nominated Toffees’ right back Jonjoe Kenny, who has also impressed of late, picking up two clean sheets and an assist in his last three starts. I’m banking on Big Sam organising his team with a shut-out in mind when he travels to his former club.

Adrian also gets my backing. having wrestled the West Ham number one jersey from Joe Hart. His clean sheet against Chelsea was particularly impressive, as were his six saves against Pep Guardiola’s troops.

Mark Says…

I’ve included the so-called “magic bean” Trent Alexander-Arnold, partly to wind Jonty up, but also because I genuinely believe he’s a strong one-week punt for the visit of West Brom to Anfield.

Alan Pardew has promised goals and he’s delivered none in two matches so far. Set-pieces aside, it’s difficult to see the Baggies troubling Liverpool when they will surely be on the back foot dealing with Coutinho and company.

Alexander-Arnold is a winger in full-back’s clothing and his delivery from the flank could be a key weapon on Wednesday.

His chances of getting past Jonty and into the Picks? Probably zero, but it gives me the opportunity to re-ignite the argument.

I’d have liked to have gone with Coutinho and Salah in midfield but, in the end, settled solely on the Egyptian. I’m anticipating a debate on doubling up, though I’d rather see Spurs’ Son get the nod.

I didn’t push hard for his inclusion in Gameweek 17, settling instead on his selection in the Differentials. I will be fighting his corner this time.

Up front, I’m promoting Austin and fancy my chances of sealing his selection alongside Kane. His opponents Leicester have started well under Claude Puel, though just two clean sheets since the Frenchman took charge is not enough to convince me that Austin will be silenced on his reunion with his former manager.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek 17 will be Hodar, who is in his eighth campaign and has finished inside the top 100,000 in each of his last four seasons.

The Community Champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 16’s champion Sliver was narrowly beaten by the Scouts 41-40. The champion to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

Moreno > West Ham def / Kenny
Or maybe Morata > Firmino to free up some money so that you can take a hit and upgrade someone else.

Wilson > DCL also an option

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Where next for Morata owners?

Are his owners keeping and hoping he starts the following gwk?

Or are you ditching? And if so who for?

Is this a chance to go for a change of formation? To 4-5-1 or 3-5-2? Or is having two budget strikers too inflexible.

Or is it better to go for another sure starter from a good side, with good fixtures - eg Firmino? Or Lacazette?

    1. @persecuted_by_mods
        8 years, 2 months ago

I don't even see Firmino or Laca as sure starters anymore, Giroud is surely about to enter the fray.

No idea what to do, fancy going back to Lukaku now but he's played almost every minute so far

            8 years, 2 months ago

If there's an inkling from Conte that Morata may possibly be a doubt for the weekend then he's straight out for Lukaku, if not then I'll keep and play as bench player

Starting to become a bit of a problem this, as the consept of "sure starter" is inching more towards a non-existant thing each season. Right now I have Kane and Lukaku, with DCL as the on again off again 3rd, and that is mostly down to them being pretty certain starters so I'm praying for Lukaku to find form.

Christmas schedule always makes for a tearjerker for my team, so this season I want the certain starters to file into my team, form be damned.

Had headache last night in deciding should I sell him, Gross and Moreno to 6.0 striker, Silva and some >5 def for -8 or Niasse and Moreno to DCL and Mariappa for -4.

Unfortunately, did the latter as I haven't seen the news on time.

Now I will most probably keep and play Gross and then downgrade him and get Silva in next gw. Might sell for Deeney, Austin or Diouf for -4 until tonight tho.

            Keeping.

He's highly owned in my mini leagues so many are in the same boat, I expected him to be rested anyway and have a full bench prepared.

I'm not going to waste a transfer getting him out when there are no credible alternatives, then waste another transfer and pay more to bring him back if he's available Saturday.

Will start him anyway, and if he doesn't play DCL comes off the bench.

In two minds, part of me is saying play RLC, bench him look at those fixtures, another part is saying this is an opportunity to improve your squad by getting in Firmino, who won't be too far off Morata come the end of the season.

I have a couple of bench players that will start, so I'm holding. Fixtures are too good to hastily shift; he's not even in terrible form.

If I were to, I would lose value. Firmino & Jesus are the only alternatives I would be interested in, both of which are rotation risks.

I've taken a couple of hits of late so really want to hold off taking any more unnecessary ones.

Keeping and benching, still think the Kane-Morata partnership is the best for the run in to Xmas and beyond.
How I wish I had DCL over Niasse though, I'd still be in pretty decent shape but I'm a bit stuck having to play Niasse and hoping he starts.

Plus a hit to bring in Otamendi.

Debating morata to firmino for hit, or instead playing rlc off bench.

I'll keep and eye on what my rivals do. They have already taken a hit before this news broke. If they go to -8 I ma6 just get firmino....

I am keeping. Squad can cope with playing 3-5-2. Hopefully it's not a long term issue for morata

Issue at the moment is that lacazette usually plays around 60 mins and will be rested for Giroud as the some point, lukaku is out of form and will be dropped at some point, Jesus is prone to rotation, Firminho again prone to rotation. Which leads to players like Vardy who is pretty nailed, maybe Defoe after his brace. A lot of uncertainty in forwards this year.

I'm probably ditching. Its not for a hit and leaves me with lots itb to use gwk 18 or 19.

He hasn't had a double digit score since GWK 6 and on 4 ycs. Plus as we saw v WHU, chelsea are not invincible and for Hazard owners that's a lot of £££ tied up in blanking players.

I'm reluctantly looking at Firmino - he'll definitley start midweek after the weekend's benching. Plus should gt game time and the fixtures are great. He does much better against weaker sides.

In an ideal world I'd get Lukaku v Bou and for xmas. He is a sure starter. If he can show the same passion on the pitch as he can with a tea cup in the tunnel then he'd be great. May very well go for him. Have exact ££ for that swap - could be fate.

I would like Lukaku. Firmino just feels so meh and certainly don't want to get caught out by keeping him through another multi gameweek slump like some were earlier this season.

But Bobby does currently tick all the right boxes.

6 goals in 2015/16 Season and
                      3/4 goals in 2016/17 season

Keeping it as I don’t see any potential replacement. Laca is not a sure starter with Giroud and Firmino is prone to rotation plus I already have Salah and Coutinho. The only possibility would be to go to Austin and have two budget strikers but I don’t want to go there for the moment. So i’ll keep and benche him hoping he will be back on Saturday.

But the 2 budget strikers possibility is the possibility that looks the more appealing to me in case I sell Morata

Made transfer last night, so will have to be for a -4, but am tempted precisely because I think a lot of my ML rivals will sit tight and it’s a relatively safe opportunity to get differential points I.e is getting in Lukakau with good fixtures or Aguero who was rested at the weekend and likely to start this week a ‘risk’? Not particularly in my books.

Right now I don't know, but leaning towards keeping.
Got him at 10.2, so that's a factor.
The tough thing is, we don't know if he's just out for just this game, or the weekend (or more) too.
I don't see too much in the way of great alternatives though - lots of rotation and rest coming up, so whilst the likes of Firmino might be appealing if nailed on, he clearly isn't.
Tricky one really, as don't want him on my bench for more than 1 Gwk.

My three pool slots are occupied by Gomez, Salah and Coutinho so would require surgery.

However for - 4 I could do morata to firminho and Gomez to otamendi with 0.9 ITB!

Tempted to sell for Firmino (-4) - for the West Brom and Bournemouth matches and then reassess.

Would probably keep the majority of cash ITB for a quick switch back to Morata after that. Would lose 0.3 value as it stands - but could well gain that back.

But as it stands, a tired, out of form Morata on 4 yellows with (what is probably) a niggling injury is not really worth keeping for the next few weeks.

Benching this week, waiting for more info on injury, got him at 10.3 I believe so fair bit of cash tied up in him although I'm aware his price will drop swiftly now. The replacements I'm considering are Firmino to enable a very strong 3-5-2 formation. Alternatively I'm looking at Aguero, Lukaku or Laca.

This is a tough one but here is my reasoning

Im chasing in my private league, so the urge of ‘trying sth’ is strong. That could prove disastrous though.

Trying sth means getting rid (I have two FTs) for a striker than I think will do very well this GW - Aguero, Firmino, Austin or even Lukaku (but afraid Zlatan might get his first start)

If Kane blanks, Im getting rid until 22, was always the plan. So if Morata back at the weekend, and if Kane blanks, Alvaro comes back in for Harry.

If Kane scores another brace, well, I’ll reassess...

This whole scenario has shades of gameweek 10 where many sold Kane, often for a hit, only for him to reappear in GW11 against Palace where a lot of people took a hit again to get him back. OK he didn't perform that well, but the point is nearly everyone got him back regardless. With the quotes we have from Conte it doesn't seem like a serious injury at all and he will likely be back within the week.

Lots are gambling on Firmino but it just seems like a convenience move. Morata is the top scoring striker after Kane and has the best fixtures of any striker so the whole idea just seems like digging yourself into a deeper hole.

A lot has been said about the importance of having a strong bench over Christmas, well this gameweek seems like the perfect opportunity to mend those 3rd subs or cheap defenders.

You talk a lot of sense but I’m not seeing the form of late, DCL @ 5ish is probably matching him right now. I honestly think it’s safe to sell for now, I don’t place him in the same category of Kane/Aguero, what kind of minutes did this guy get before anyway? He has looked tired of late.

DCL looks a good option, but as a third striker. I still think over the season two premium striker spots is the best for balance, it wasn't long ago we were talking about having three big hitters. If DCL is your second striker then it is incredibly hard to get Morata back without some serious tinkering.

Jesus/Aguero getting injured means we may really want the one that is fit, Morata back and firing with good fix until GW27 will look obvious if he scores on his return, Lukaku has the record against the smaller teams which are the fixtures he has in the next 8 (this one might look silly right now!). Just want to keep the door open for any of those instances. I think there will always be demand for 2 big strikers for the majority of the season, this week excluded 🙂

I've been waiting to lump money into midfield and with 2 FTs this is the perfect time I feel.

At least you know he won't play - I'm getting tired of having a good unused bench and these so called 'rested' players bringing home the 1 pointers...

Tough one. Hes gone for me he has been poor last 2 games and plenty of good midfield options.

Will either go with Austin (alongside Kane and dcl) as this will allow me to bring in coutinho and pogba

Other option is lukaku - can he be flat track bully over Xmas?

Used my FT just before seeing the news so will play RLC this week. Keeping unless he's out longer term. Not sure anyone else really appeals anyway, maybe Firminho for a triple pool attack but not convinced. Other option downgrade and uplift midfield but could be inflexible with Kane and DCL my other two strikers.

Kun and lukaku are sold options and provide a good price point to swap back at a later stage. They both have good fixtures too.

Already used my free transfer, so this is a bad blow. How does this look for a minus 12?

Elliott, mee and morata for de Gea, Christensen, and firminho?

            Keeping.

Selling Kane next week, so if I sell Morata as well, there's hardly anyone I would want up there. Firmino's alright but not interested in Lacazette.

What abt selling Morata for whoever this GW, and selling Kane for Morata before GW18 if he's back?

All depends on the price at which you bought Morata of course.

Thoughts on Aguero? Sure, rotation risk but he could destroy the Swans.
Lukaku? Sure, he is in bad form but if he finds it back vs Bournemouth, could be bloody.

Bought him for 10.3, but it's not only that. Why sell him just to get him back next week? Waste of transfers right?

I personally just haven't liked Aguero this year. Even when he plays, it's mostly just blanks or penalties. Think he's overpriced. Would rather have Sterling or KDB.

Same with Lukaku. Overpriced because he's not the Lukaku of last season. Lacks explosiveness in this United team. Would rather get Rashford or Pogba for much cheaper. Waiting for Pogba's return actually.

            Reasons to sell Morata:

            He's definitely out tonight
You can bring in a player you fancy to do well tonight - Firmino? DCL and cash? A punt?
Probably be a lot of other rotation tonight so risk having less than 11 (could be effectively a -2 even if a hit)
No timescale for return - even if a minor injury the next game is in a few days so that must be a risk
Price dropping fast (tonight and maybe again tomorrow)
He looked poor last game anyway, as did Chelsea
Chelsea rarely thrash teams so unlikely to risk much if sell
Even if he plays at the weekend, they have Soton next who are defensively decent, will park the bus then an improving Everton under BFS away
On 4 yellows so you may lose him again once he's back
Chance to spread the funds to defence or midfield if you want

            Reasons to keep

Saves a transfer or 4 points
He may be back soon - if you want him back may cost you more money

            Benching.
Probably 4-5-1 if Mee fit. If not DCL.
This GW makes me nervous with Sterling & Salah maybe be getting some sort of rest. Maybe ota gets a rest for Swansea away.
Have a FT so will roll it with cash it to deal with it if Morata looks a problem.

The only player is want is Firmino but I've already got Salah and Coutinho. Triple Liverpool sounds like either a rocket up the ranks or suicide and nothing in between.

Having got rid of Kane before Stoke, and given that Kane has (at my expense) proven that he can do it against weaker teams at home, I was thinking of Morata->Kane anyway. This injury has made things so much easier.

Before Kane's brace against Stoke, I was dead set on a 4-5-1, and I think it can be done with Kane as the lone frontman, but the problem with this formation is that it commits you to having to play four at the back (minimum). At the start of the season I would have said that this was a viable option but not anymore. Two decent strikers is a must for flexibility and the template at the moment is Kane + Morata/Firmino.

I will probably get Morata back as I see him as excellent value, but I would point out that back problems are notoriously difficult to put a prognosis on and he may well miss the next couple at least. There is also the matter of the 4 YCs. I think that it might be worth waiting for the New Year to jump back on the Morata express.

I think it's worth noting on the four yellows issue which many have highlighted, that as Morata is going to miss tonight's game he only has to get through GW18 and 19 (vs Southampton and Everton) without getting booked, then the threat of a one game ban is lifted.

it's likely 1 week, why waste a transfer and then switch back? And to who? Somebody like Lukaku who hasn't scored in 9 and looks shot? And may even be rested for Ibra? I can field a v strong 5 midfield or have DCL come in so I'm relaxed.

I sold Firmino for Morata, and maintained double Liverpool with Salah by switching Silva for Coutinho as he was an injury doubt. Backfired on me both moves have cost me 12 points so far!

I’m going to roll my FT his week as kind of want Silva back now. I might get DCL and then Silva back for RLC in a 3-5-2 and rotate DCL, Diouf & Mee.

Have more pressing concerns in my team and nobody out there interests me to replace him with. He'll be back for next week so two matches maximum missed isn't too bad. I purchased at 10.2 too.

Lots of people questioning why you would sell him to buy back.

Why would you buy back? Guessing most bought Morata before Hazard exploded, now most have Hazard why do you need 10.6m tied up in an uncaptainable asset?

Liverpool's fixtures are just as nice as Chelsea's, this could be a great opportunity to stray away from the template in an uncertain week, could be good for the rank if you make the right pick.

Regretfully did Dunk > Kenny last night before the news. I'm going all in with a -4! Pray for me.

            Morata > DCL
            A. King > Mahrez

I've been meaning to start spreading my cash to my bench to deal with Christmas rotation. This GW was looking bad for me with double Swansea defence and triple Brighton (don't ask). There's a good chance I'll break even on the -4, but almost every risk I've taken so far this season as failed.

When a player is described by a manager as "tired and has a x problem" I read that as being rested rather than injured. By adding an imaginary back issue Conte is just trying to protect himself from blame should it go wrong. I've noticed several managers do it this season, Poch being one. Morata will be play at the weekend and will punish sellers vs Southampton, I'm sure.

A bit of insight into your cup opponent Jonty (me!). I had already used my FT to Daniels > Kenny. Keeping Morata to see if he is just being rested so as not to waste transfers. He's still got great fixtures. Firmino wasn't an option for me as already got the old Salah Coutinho double up. If Morata is out for longer I really like the look of Lukaku's fixtures. Hope you're not a Catholic Jonty, because so far Pope has me slightly ahead in our cup tie! 🙂 Good luck for tonight; it's kind of Firmino vs Coutinho. It'll be exciting if Pool get a penalty!

5 gws ago my rank was 3 260k.

          Now it's 1 140k.

But I think this will be pretty bad GW for me. Captaining Coutinho also.
