Just as the Harry Kane apologists were beginning to diminish or be drowned out, the Spurs striker confirmed his status as a devastating Fantasy asset with a bolt from the blue.

Kane’s hat-trick delivered an unexpected season-high haul of 17 points at Burnley, a venue that had previously seen just three goals conceded to away sides.

The foundations for Kane’s treble were laid early with a first penalty kick of the season for Spurs.

A controversial incident involving Dele Alli – who was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch following an early cautioned foul – that crucial early goal opened the game up. That allowed Mauricio Pochettino’s side to belie their recent form and put on an impressive attacking display.

Under those conditions, Kane could emphatically underline his Fantasy credentials. His eight shots, with six arriving in the penalty area, were again a Gameweek high.

The striker was sold by 108,000 ahead of Friday’s deadline, having lost 135,000 owners in Gameweek 18.

He will now next on Southampton at Wembley Stadium in Gameweek 20 with renewed confidence. An assured starter, that fixture now creates another scenario that could punish recent sellers further.

Some 867,000 opted for Kane as their captain this weekend – only 40% of his ownership. That figure will surely increase for the visit of Southampton.

Kane needs just one strike against the Saints to beat Alan Shearer’s record for the most Premier League goals scored in a calendar year. Meanwhile, Southampton will arrive without a clean sheet in their last ten Gameweeks.

The striker’s comments post-match made it obvious that the record will be on his mind come Boxing Day.

“We wanted the second goal to kill the game and when I scored it, I thought ‘right, let’s get the hat-trick’, I was happy to put that one away, I’m really pleased. I can now go into the game on Tuesday and try to get the record, that would be a great achievement.”

Kane now has 15 goals for the season – level with Mohamed Salah – and is up to 114 points in FPL overall’s standings – placing him fourth behind Salah (145), Raheem Sterling (125) and Kevin De Bruyne (116).

It remains to be seen how the market reacts, with Kane facing the missing fixture in Gameweek 21, before a double-header against Swansea City (away) and West Ham United (home) in Gameweek 22.

Should his price rise, it will be another consideration for those contemplating trading the striker out for his blank Gameweek, with extra profit potentially lost along with the transfers involved.

It will also mean those pondering a move back for Kane may have to find more cash to fund the deal ahead of his double.

After all the recent questioning and debate, there can be no question that Kane will be seen as near essential for Gameweek 22, with the Triple Captain chip also being prepared.

Pochettino shuffles the pack

Elsewhere for Spurs, there were four changes to the line-up, as Serge Aurier and Ben Davies ousted Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose in the latest phase of rotation at full-back. We have to presume that this will be reversed on Boxing Day.

Davinson Sanchez returned from his suspension to take his place in the back four, with Eric Dier shifting to midfield. Harry Winks was missing with a minor ankle injury.

Two assists for Alli signalled brief respite from a miserable run of form, yet the controversy of the early penalty, plus his challenge that may well have warranted a dismissal, overshadowed those events.

Alli remains on the periphery of Fantasy thinking, while even a resurgent Christian Eriksen is struggling to compete for midfield selection in our squads.

The Dane blanked on Saturday having returned in each of his last four Gameweeks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just watched the Charlie Austin assault on Lossl. Quiet surprised didn't think he had that in him, bit disappointed tbh.

Was he carded for it? If not he surely will be facing a retrospective ban.

He was one of my favourite players. Always thought he had that Sunday league 'Dog and Duck' feel about him. A man of the people sort of thing.

What data? His shooting stats are still dominant compared to the competition. I imagine the decision was longterm, but you should've been careful with stat interpretation about the opponent. A couple of guys including me warned about it here. Burnley only conceded 3 goals at home this season, but had the absolute easiest run of opponents at Turf More, every relegation team in fact. How they'd react against a better team (they only played Arsenal out of those at home) has been unknown so far, but with a makeshift defence there definitely weren't any clear indicators that getting rid of Kane was the right thing to do.

      1. Carpe Diem
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

They'd been solid on the road too, and had clearly showed that they can cope without Heaton, without Mee, without Lowton and without Ward. Reinvesting the money elsewhere was perhaps a wise thing to do. Who could have predicted a blatant dive early on giving Kane the confidence he needed?

Kane + fodder -> Sterling + Austin, for example, still won (if the fodder wasn't RLC).

Without Heaton is a red herring. Pope has been probably best keeper in league since he replaced Heaton. He's just not been tested with a thrown together backline. Other than Arsenal they faced the dregs of the league in terms of attacking teams

Following on from Jay on the scoutcast, if he hadn’t taken the -12 and stuck with his team then he would be sitting in the top 10 today 🙂

If he had also captained Kane ... well ....

Obviously his position is fantastic, but it just shows that no matter how well you plan and think things out, you still need a huge element of luck.

But I think not having an explosive and nailed player like Kane, when and if Spurs really start playing to their potential, is a huge risk.

Rough: got rid of Maguire for Ogbonna and played the latter over Christensen

Do I stick with Morata and Hazard or switch them out? If so, to who? (have Kane, Salah, Sterling).

Hate being punished for picking Smalling over Jones due to injuries, as well as Jones never an offensive threat.

Now I have 1FT and 0.0M ITB with this lot:

    Foster
    Smalling - Otamendi - Hegazi
    Salah - Richarlison - Sterling - Zaha
    Agüero - Kane - Firmino

    Bench: Elliot, Carroll, Mariappa, Mee.

My original plan was Agüero to Morata.. However, I'm not too sure now that Agüero had a brace and Smalling got injured. Roll over FT? What to do?

might as well keep. watford have good fixtures still. pogba is wasted as no one seems to be score lately from his passes at united. its sad but true.

Hazard does this every year. He goes on a succession of blanks, then 2-3 GWs where he gets amazing returns. Then repeat

Morata next week for me based on certainty of start compared to Hazard.

Yes - luckily I captained him for his 15 pointer a few weeks ago. That’s is the only time I have ever had him in my team for a double digit haul.

Really hate him in that false 9 role. Constant back heel flicks and nonsense. Chelsea should have just played Batshuayi up top and let Hazard play his normal position.

I don’t think he even played false 9, seemed to be more on the left wing
