As time races toward tomorrow’s 11.30am deadline, it’s time for our usual pre-Gameweek members’ article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders for the upcoming round of fixtures.

We kick off by checking out the results of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll before analysing the key numbers for both the armband favourites and their respective teams.

Finally, we’ll delve into the data to suggest a couple of differential picks for those willing to take a punt.

The Captain Poll

The Boxing Day fixture list hands a host of big-hitters favourable Gameweek 20 opponents to boost their armband prospects.

Harry Kane currently sits at the summit with 37% of the votes cast, as he welcomes Southampton to Wembley Stadium on the back of his three-goal explosion at Burnley.

The Spurs frontman has undoubtedly toiled at his new temporary home, with six blanks in nine appearances. Nonetheless, Kane has improved of late, scoring in three of his last five Wembley fixtures, including two double-digit scores. Meanwhile, the Saints defences has just a single clean sheet from their last 14 Gameweeks,

Liverpool’s main men will also be among the key contenders for a home match with basement-dwellers Swansea.

Up against a defence that’s shipped ten goals in their last five road trips, Mohamed Salah (25%) is undoubtedly Kane’s main rival for the armband.

The Egyptian’s 10-point tally at Arsenal was his eighth double-figure score of the season and with a goal or assist in ten of the last 11 Gameweeks, he’s one of the most consistent and explosive picks around.

Both Roberto Firmino (1%) and Philippe Coutinho (2%) are also in fine fettle.

Over their last four league starts, Firmino has four goals and a pair of assists, while Coutinho has served up three goals and four assists for the in-form Reds’ attack.

Chelsea’s home encounter with Brighton brings both Eden Hazard (6%) and Alvaro Morata (6%) into contention.

The Belgian has struggled in recent weeks with Morata out through injury and suspension, tallying just a single assist in the last three fixtures.

Yet that’s in stark contrast to his showings alongside the Spaniard – Hazard has delivered three sets of 10+ points hauls in three of his last five starts with Chelsea’s summer signing on the teamsheet.

Morata has scored in two of his last three league outings at Stamford Bridge and emerged from the bench to score a midweek Carabao Cup winner at home to Bournemouth.

Man City’s trip to Newcastle on Wednesday night could prove a significant fixture for the captaincy race. Their big-hitters are largely overlooked in the Poll, yet they face a Magpies defence that have claimed just a single shut-out in 15 Gameweeks and have conceded at least twice in six of their previous eight outings.

Three goals and a trio of assists in as many appearances have made Raheem Sterling the favoured City pick and the number one transfer target in the Gameweek, though only 3% are considering him for the captaincy.

Sergio Aguero is also nominated by 3%. His tally of 16 points at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 19 served a reminder that backing the City strikers can sometimes pay off if you’re prepared to run the risk of rotation.

David Silva, with three goals in his last two away appearances and, Kevin De Bruyne, with two sets of 10+ points hauls in the previous three, earn less than 1% backing for the St James’ Park encounter.

Man United will look to bounce back from their late collapse at Leicester as Burnley roll up to Old Trafford.

Only two sides have scored more goals at home than the Red Devils’ 22, which could be good news for differential picks, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba, who have both persuaded just 1% of voters.

Lukaku has found the net in two of the last three Gameweeks and is bound to be among the main captaincy picks on the back of his remaining 33% ownership.

Encouragingly, he’s scored three times in four home appearances alongside Pogba this term. The Frenchman, meanwhile, has bagged 26 points across that quartet of matches.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    A) Lukaku (BUR, SOT)
    B) Morata (BRI, STO)
    C) Aguero (new, cpl)
    D) Firmino (SWA, LEI)

If they were all playing 180mins then aguero.

Kun and firm possibly rested so rule them out. Not sure I'd want firm against bus parking teams either.

Lukaku has been pants so he is out.

That leaves Morata. Think he'll play both and hopefully remembers his first game against stoke.

Was d fletcher playing in defence too, distinct ly remember him trying to run back for one of the goals.

      In order...

      Spurs:
      Kane
      Eriksen
Lloris or Sanches? (purely cos they look nailed to play both)

      West Ham:
      Adrian
      Arnautovic / Lanzini
      Ogbonna / Masuaku

        Salah(V) Son Sterling Surman
        Firmino Kane(C) Vardy
        Fabianski Doucoure Monreal Ogbonna
Given above with 1 FT and 2.0 ITB
Maybe Elliot > Adrian is best transfer this week.

Only issue with Adrian for double GW is they might well get a CS vs. WBA, but very unlikely vs Spurs. So I'd be surprised if he gets more than 8 in that week - perhaps save points?

Basically, unless you want Adrian long-run (and I watched them v Newcastle at weekend - poor defending), I wouldn't bother.

Agree with shouts for Lingard, unless something changes he's playing number ten for the second-best team in the league. Most Man Utd fans reckon, even if Mkhitaryan comes in from the cold to play no. 10, Lingard would carry on as part of front three anyway.

        That's a big if.

Would Jones score more points long term? Being in a Mourinho team, I guess he would if he retains the position. Next question is if he would retain the starting berth.

          • 14 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

Jones starting berth isn't the risk, it's his injury record. And you're the one who brought him up! Not worth a hit this week with Masuaka available.

            • 12 Years
            8 years, 2 months ago

I brought him up, because that's possibly my best option as a Monreal owner. A part of me wants Jones in my team long term.

Nice defence. He looks unlikely. I've switched him out for Christensen - tbh both Chelsea and Man Utd are better bets defensively than Arsenal.

        • 12 Years
        8 years, 2 months ago

True that. I am very inclined to take the hit at the cost of losing in the cup and a red arrow this week. Jones against Burnley is as good a bet as my current bench of Masuaku (Bournemouth away).

        1. Fitzy.

            • 12 Years

That is my dilemma. Is Jones against Burnley home 4 points better than Masuaku against Bournemouth away?

Other considerations could be long term team health. Jones also gives me a little bit more money in the bank to maneuver and possibly a few more points than Monreal (considering Jones is not injured).

    2. rogerbarton
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 2 months ago

Also, what's your team value? You've got a very similar team to mine, except you've managed to squeeze DDG and Otamendi in too. Did you get them early?

      1. @fpl_phenom
        • 10 Years

        £105.4M

Ye got both pretty early, had Kane and Salah from the start too.

The DDG downgrade is more about finding funds for Pogba...

By choosing A you think Lingard will be as effective from an FPL point of view?

        1. rogerbarton
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 2 months ago

Lingard is playing as number ten (further forward than Pogba) and his haul has been incredible since coming in. According to Man Utd fans, even if changes are made, he'd be likely to slot into front three rather than rotated out.

So I do think Lingard + DDG is better than Adrian + Pogba.

It depends on the players we are replacing. A and B ideally but need a West Ham defender/ goalkeeper too.

    hi all
    thoughts on this team ?

    Pope
    Alonso, Jones, Kenny
    Salah, Coutinho, Hazard, Sterling, Rlc
    Kane, Firmino
    Elliot, Quaner, Long, Dunk

    should i save FT ?

I expect rotation but will probably be able to field 11 even though my bench is weak. any thoughts ?

Cannot look beyond Kane for the captaincy. Has everyone forgotten how crazy he went at the end of last season in his quest for the golden boot? (The very reason, I might add, why he was priced so highly this season).

He's not only one goal away from breaking Shearer's record for PL goals in a calendar year, but two from surpassing Messi for most goals for club/country for 2017.

And we already saw against Burnley that he is in beast mode.

I do think breaking records at the end of the season is different to middle of it, although in both scenarios the league was gone.

Can't argue with him though, I'll be captaining.

Fair enough on the end of season point. Though I think the Spurs attack has got it's mojo back after a horrible November. Players coming back from injury has helped too.

Yeah, the hunger he showed for not only winning the ball but then getting back in to a goalscoring position was incredible, especially when the game was already wrapped up.

no one even knew about that shearer record a couple of weeks ago, and no one will care about it in a couple of months if kane breaks it. golden boots at least become a trophy.
kane wants to score hattricks every game.

No, but Kane knows about it which is the most important thing. It's no doubt an added motivation for him. He made mention of it in the post-match interview against Burnley so it's clearly on his mind.

I think these milestones are important for an individual player. It's a step towards breaking Shearer's all-time PL record.

feel if anyone doesnt need any incentives it's kane. main reason he's where he is imo is an unrivaled work-ethic and application. a striker version of lampard. relatively ungifted players lording it up

I agree with that analysis in general but the added incentive cannot be overlooked. Look at his determination for the third goal against Burnley when the game was already won.

But, yeah he'd still be a great captaincy pick without the record on the horizon.

Spurs have improved ever since thry got a rest midweek in the CL against Apoel. Yes, they got stuffed against City, but so has everyone. Hopefully the whole first XI get a rest in the FA Cup next week.

Yeah, the City game can't be attributed to the general 'blip'. If anything, as a Spurs fan, I was pleased with the way we approached the game - constantly pressing them despite it leaving us exposed. Found it incredible that whenever Ederson took goal kicks there appeared to be more players in the City half due to Spurs players surrounding the box.

Beast mode indeed, hard to look past him this week, we know he values records and has even spoke about it.

Southampton are in trouble with injuries/transfer sagas at the back, wouldn't be surprised to see him bang in another hatrick.

Mid is Zaha-Salah- richarlison- KDB- Sterling

    Aguero- Kane- Calvert Lewin

Replace Aguero for Firmino og Morata?
Too big of a rotation risk.

On wildcard. Silva and Firmino was my plan. But you do not know if Silva is in Spain and Firmino is maybe a rotation risk.

    A) Silva and Firmmino
    or
    B) Lingard and Morata.

    Thank you!
